Physical Features

Alligators have scaly skin. They weigh 1,000 pounds. The females are usually smaller than the males. Alligators have wide, flats heads with broad, round noses. An alligator’s lower teeth fit inside the upper ones. When it closes its mouth, only the top teeth can be seen. Alligators have black eyes.

Lifespan

Alligators can live for 50-60 years. Alligators were almost endangered but now they are not.

Habitat

Alligators live in southern United States like Florida. They also live in China. Alligators live where the water meets the land, and where the weather is warm. Also alligators live in places where the water is warm all year and some can live in slightly cooler climates. Alligators live in lakes, rivers, and other wetlands.

Food

Alligators get their food by sneaking up on it and snatching it. Alligators are carnivores. Carnivore means they only eat meat. They eat raccoons, snakes, birds, and turtles. Many people kill alligators because they are scared of them and people make purses and shoes out of them.

Behavior

Alligators are very fierce and mean animals. Alligators usually don’t eat humans but watch out and don’t go near their babies.

Babies

When baby alligators are born they are only about nine inches long. A mother alligator can have 60 babies at a time.

With alligators’ wide heads, alligators’ eyes and nostrils stick up out of the water so then the alligator can sneak up on its prey.

Alligators can run on land as fast as a human. That helps it catch its prey.

Alligators can close their throat, nose, and ears so no water can get in. They can hold their breath for a long time. They can also see through the dark so they can hunt for food in the night. Alligators have huge, powerful jaws to help eat their prey.
