ORIGINALCHARGE/FRAMEWORK
Acommitteeofcrosscampuspartnersincludingfaculty,staffandstudentswasformedattheendofthe2016-2017academicyeartoworkonanddevelopacomprehensiveAzteccultureeducationalplan.Asaresultofthecommitteemeetings,anumberofproposedinitiativeswereidentified.Thechargeofthegroupandthebasisoftheconversationshaverevolvedaroundfulfillingpriorcommitmentsmadebythecampus,asanexample:
AssociatedStudentsReferendumSpring2008,passedImplementationofanAztecCultureProject.TheProjectwillincludethreeelementsintendedtopromotehistoricallyaccurateportrayalsoftheAztecCulture:newbotanicalgardensaroundthecampusthatincludeindigenousplantingsfromareaswheretheAztecsthrived,aglass-mosaicmuralthatdepictshistoricallyaccurateimagesportrayingtheoriginsoftheAztecCulture,andeducationalprogramsabouttheAztecCulturethatwouldbeofferedtoallnewSDSUstudents
AsthecommitteeincorporatedtherecognitionoftheUniversity’srelationshiptolocalIndiangroupsaswellasotherindigenousgroupsfromMexicothatcomprisethelargerUniversitycommunity.Tobeginprioritizingideasandpotentialcampusefforts,thefollowingframeworkhasbeencreatedfromthecurrentcommittee’sdiscussions,tocategorizetheoverarchingtopicalareasandobjectivesidentifiedtodate:SanDiegoStateUniversitywillenrichtheenvironmentanddeepencampuslearning,bothinsideandoutsidetheclassroom,byenhancingAztecCultureEducationknowledgeandunderstandingbystrategically:
• ExpandingopportunitiesforscholarshipregardingAztecCulture,aswellaslocalindigenousandNativeAmericangroups,throughinnovativecourses,experiences,andengagement.(Curricular)
• Creatingandfosteringenvironmentsthatprovideopportunitiesforstudents,faculty,staffandthe
communitytoparticipateinintentionalexperiencesregardingAztecandotherindigenousandNativeCulturesoutsideoftheclassroom.(Co-Curricular)
• EstablishingandpromotingAztecArtsandCultureoncampusandbeyondtheuniversitythrough
installationofartdisplaysandculturaleventopportunities.(ArtsandCulture)

COMMITTEEIDEASMOVEDFORWARD:
1. NAHUATLLANGUAGEPROGRAMMING
COMPLETED–OFFEREDSPRING2018OverviewTheNahuatllanguageremainsoneofthemostdominantindigenouslanguagesoftheMesoamericanregionandissituatedwithinthevalleyofMexicoandextendstoElSalvador.ItwastheofficiallanguageoftheancientpeoplecommonlyknownasAztecsbyscholarsofpreContactMesoamerica.Today,itisestimatedthatthereare1.5millionNahuaspeakersofNahuatl.ThecoursesequenceforNahuatlatSanDiegoStateUniversitywouldrestonthecourseworkdevelopedbyDr.JohnSullivanthroughtheInstitutodeDocenciaeInvestigaciónEtnológicadeZacatecas(IDIEZ)andtheCouncilonLatinAmericanandIberianStudiesatYaleUniversity.TheonlineandlivestreamingcourseissupportedthroughacooperativeofuniversitiestoincludeUCLA,Stanford,UniversityofUtah,UniversityofMichiganandYale.SDSUhastheopportunitytojointhecooperative,knownastheWesternAllianceforNahuatl(WAN),byprovidingaccesstoourexistingMixteclanguageprogramtothepartners.TheWANprovidessharedcourseactivities,projects,andonlinematerialsinadditiontothoseprovidedbytheIDIEZ.
StructureThepotentialcourseofferingsfromIDIEZwouldencompassuptofoursemestersandtheopportunityforwinter,spring,andsummerimmersionprograms(studyabroad)intheHuastecaincentralMexico.CourseswouldbebroadcastthroughZoomandtheSDSUcourselistingswouldbeofferedatthesamehourastheliveinstruction.SDSUwouldprovideaTeachingAssistantwithadvancedNahuatllanguageskillsthatwouldbeavailableduringthecoursebroadcast,holdofficehours,andprovidefeedbackoncourseactivities.Suggestedcoursecapacityisamaximumof25students.Inaddition,wewouldneedtosponsoroneoftheNahuatlinstructorstocometocampusforoneweektoworkwithstudents,theTA,andthelargercampustoassurethatthelanguageinstructionincludesappropriateculture

OverviewCreateanongoingeducationalseriesregardingAzteccultureandSDSU’sconnectiontoAztecculturePurposeCollaboratewithOneSDSUseries,theProvostandLatinAmericanStudents,LoveLibraryandtheAztecStudentUnionProgrammingBoardtoregularlybringspeakersandspeakerpanelstoSDSUtodiscussAzteccultureandSDSU’songoingrelationshiptoAztecculture.Inaddition,speakersandpanelsmayalsobedevelopedthatdemonstrateSDSU’scommitmenttorecognizingthemanyotherindigenousgroupsthatformthelargerSDSUcommunity.Keyspeakersand/orspeakerpanelswillbeidentifiedthroughcampuspartnersandconnectedtodiversityprogrammingandcampusspeakerprograms.ThesepartnershipscouldincludeOneSDSUCommunityprogramming,theLoveLibrarySpeakerSeries,theProvost’sspeakerseries,andothers.
TimelineEachsemesteracommitteewillplanforatleastonespeakerorpaneltodiscussAzteccultureandaddressrealitiesandthemythsassociatedwiththeculture.Theplantakesplaceatleastthesemesterbeforetheeventbutmaybeplannedanacademicyearinadvance.TheeventwouldfollowtheOneSDSUCommunitymarketingguidelinesandtimelines.

OverviewItisimportantforAthleticstocontinuetoeducateitsstudentathletesandfansregardingAztecCulturetoenhancetheircollectiveexperienceandknowledgeoftheUniversity’smoniker.Additionally,thestudentrepresentingtheAztecWarrior(SpiritLeader)willreceivecontinuingeducation,toremainhistoricallyaccurateinrepresentingAztecCultureinapositivemanner.

INPROCESS/beganinFall2017withDr.SethMalliosprovidingalecturetotheathletesectionsofuniversityseminar.Planstoprovidethislectureagaininfuturesemestersareinprocess.

CURRENTFALL2018OPPORTUNITY:AZTECMARKETMURALDISCOVEREDINENS.ThemuralisabeautifulpieceofstudentartintheExerciseandNutritionalSciencesbuilding.Itwascompletedin1949byRobertHugenberger.HewasaWWIIveteran,amemberofthegymnasticsteam,andaclassof'49graduate.Theartworkwaspartofhiscurriculum.ThemuralisofacontemporaryMexicanmarket,butinterspersedwiththeusualmarketplacefiguresarevariouspre-ColumbianindigenousAztecgods.It'saprofoundstatementontheconnectionbetweeneverydaylifeandreverenceforthepast;italsolinksindigenousgroupsfromacrossLatinAmericawithmodernMexicoandtheSanDiegoStatecampus.
Wewillneed$22,000toconserveit(Wehavereceivedanestimatefor$18,900andaddedin$3,000forthepotentialindirectcosts).Theideabeingdiscussedistohavea70-yearanniversarycelebrationforthemuralduringExploreSDSU(March23)in2019.Theworktakes60days,soitwouldbeidealtoundertaketheworkduringthefallof2018.
8. INDIGENOUSHEALINGGARDENPROPOSALOverviewIn2003aproposalwasputforthtocreateagardenspaceoncampusthatfeaturedthemedicinalherbsandotherplantsthatwereusedbytheNahuatlspeakingpeopleofMexico.TheplantlifewouldbeconducivetotheSanDiegoclimateandmanyoftheplantsmayalsobeindigenoustothearea.

Althoughapprovedforimplementation,theprojectwasnotundertaken.Weproposetomodifythisproposaltoincludeculturallyappropriatespatialorganizationandlandscapeelementsandfeaturesincludingmedicinalherbsandplantsrelativetothemanyindigenouspeoplethatnowresideintheregion:Kumeyaay,Nahua,Mixtec,andZapotecpeoples.TheculturallandscapegardenwouldbetermedtheIndigenousHealingGarden,andwouldservetofeaturethehealingherbsbutalsotoproduceaspaceofquietandsolitudethatmightalsobeusedforsmallgatherings.Atatimewhenweneedto‘heal’overtheissueofindigenousidentities,thelandscapegardenwouldmetaphoricallyandliterallyprovidetheopportunitytodoso.Thelandscapegardenwouldprovidethenamesineachlanguagealongwiththeculturalusesandscientificproperties.AdditionalinterpretivemessagingandinformationontheculturalsignificanceofthelandscapegardenanditsindividualfeaturescouldbedeliveredonsiteorthroughalinktoawebsiteassociatedwiththeSDSUandpartnerorganizationwebsites.
ResourcesEventhoughthelandscapegardenwouldbedesignedwithanappropriatespatialorganizationandincludeplantsthatareindigenoustotheculturalgroupsrepresented,developmentandmaintenanceareimportantconsiderations,asistheinclusionofrepresentativehealersfromtheindigenousgroupsinbothdesignandstewardship.Todothiseffectively,wewouldneedthefollowing:
1. Spacededicatedtothelandscapegarden.ExistingMediterraneangardenareawouldbeideal.DecisionwasmadetousethespacenexttotheCommunicationsbuildingthathasADAaccessfromelevator.Thishasbeenaconstructionholdingzoneandisreadytobereturnedtogardenspace.
2. SDSUlandscapertoworkwithus(RobertSchultz).Theseplantstendtobeannualsandthusmustbemaintainedandreplantedseasonally.
3. Landscapearchitect.Wewillsecurethreebidsonceanadvisorygroupoflocaltribalandindigenousgrouprepresentativeshaveconvenedandprovidedcounselingonhowthespaceshouldbeconstructedandhonored.
4. Inclusionoflocalpersonsfromthevariousgroups,studentgroupsoncampus,andotherimportantpartners.
PérezisaCo-PIonanewUSAIDgrant(withChanquiLiu,DavidLarom,andJohnLove)thatfocusesonindigenousfarmingtechniquesandtherecruitmentofstudentswithindigenousancestryintoagriculturalsciences.Thelandscapegardencouldbeincorporatedintotheprogram,whichrunsforthenexttwoyears.
Resourceimplicationsforthisprojectarearound$500,000to$800,00;existingresourcesarebetween$400,000and$500,000.Oncealandscapearchitecthascreatedaplan,thecostsrelativetothegardencanbedetermined.Theplantsthemselveswouldbeaminimalcostandtheongoingmaintenanceisprojectedtobenodifferentthanthecurrentallocationsforlandscapingmaintenanceinthearea.9. PLANNINGANDCOMMUNICATIONSSTRATEGYAframeworkandstrategicplanneedstobecreatedandimplementedtoaffirmSanDiegoStateUniversity’scommitmenttopromotinghistoricallyaccurateportrayalsofnativeandindigenous
