RESEARCH

My research interests focus on sustainable tourism with special attention to the congruence of a destination’s

emphasis on sustainability and its overall competitiveness. Specifically, I feel that preserving the character of place

is a component of sustainability that makes a destination unique and provides a competitive advantage to attract

tourists. This translates into a need for both supply-side research as well as demand-side research. Supply-side

research questions that interest me include examining resident attitudes toward tourism, the management and

marketing of natural and cultural resources, and how to best maximize tourism’s economic, socio-cultural, and

environmental benefits. Demand-side research questions that interest me surround the identification and

segmentation of niche travel segments that have the potential to bring the most benefits to destinations. The findings

gleaned from the demand-side research can subsequently be used with the information gained from the supply-side

research to create marketing and management plans that match resident values with tourists’ preferences.

NRRT 1100e: Introduction to Travel and Tourism (2 sections; 87-150 students).

Course description- This course is a survey of travel and tourism in a global context. Students become acquainted

with the economic, socio-cultural, demographic, and environmental impacts that tourism has on the world

community. Special emphasis is placed on issues faced by tourism developers in businesses and governments of all

sizes.

NRRT 5900/7900: Ecotourism and Sustainable Development (2 sections; 10-25 students)

Course description- This course is designed to provide students with an introduction to the topic of tourism and to

provide a broad discussion of what constitutes sustainable tourism from non-sustainable tourism. The discussion of

sustainable tourism is centered on tourism’s positive and negative impacts across the triple bottom line

(environmental, socio-cultural, and economic sustainability). Specific strategies to minimize these negative impacts

and to facilitate their positive impact is the primary objective of the class.

NRRT 4400: Resource Management and Entrepreneurship (3 sections; 10-20 students)

Course description- This course is designed to introduce students to the fundamental concepts, principles and

approaches to operating commercial recreation and tourism business in both public and private natural resource

settings. After completion of this course, students will have gained the knowledge and entrepreneurial skills needed

to analyze market conditions, find gaps in recreation and tourism offerings, and capitalize on these gaps by creating

business plans aimed towards attracting investors

FANR 4500: Senior Project (1 section; 6 students)

Course description- Senior project is the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resource’s capstone class. It

involves students identifying natural resource management problems and working with clients to development

objective and management alternatives to solve the problem.

FANR/MARS 1100: Natural Resource Conservation (1 section; 60 students)

Course description- This course introduces students to general principles and contemporary issues related to how we

use and protect a variety of natural resources on the planet. Topics include ecology and management of wildlife,

NRRT 8980: Research/Theories of Human Dimensions, Recreation & Tourism (2 sections; ~10 students)

This seminar-style course is designed to provide graduate students with an opportunity to learn about specific

research and theories related to the human dimensions of natural resources, outdoor recreation participation and

trends, and sustainable tourism. This course also reviews and critiques the various research approaches and designs

used within these fields of study.
