The slides in this presentation aim to supplement your studying of EDS 111.

__They are only supportive and cannot replace the

content in your CLG.

Now that we know what a theory is, what is a developmental theory?

* A developmental theory is a structured system of ideas that helps us better understand how people develop.

*The developmental theories of people such as Erikson, Freud, Piaget, Vygotsky and Kohlberg propose that children progress through different stages as they grow and develop into adults.

* Each theorist focused on a certain aspect of development, e.g. Erikson on socio-cultural contexts, Kohlberg on morality, etc.

In order to best appreciate developmental theories, we need to understood them in context.

Bronfenbrenner’s theory about social contexts can help us.

With Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory we understand that no one lives in isolation, each one of us

influences and is influenced by various social systems, and child development must be understood in social contexts.

The following slides explain the five contexts or eco-systems from his theory.
