TABERNACLE TIMES

**** JUNE 2010 ****

Let’s Talk About . . . Being United Methodist When you receive this issue of the Tab Times, it will be the week of the Annual Conference session, three days of worship, Bible study, and business sessions. It is a grueling three days that keeps us running from early in the morning until 10 or 10:30 at night. For most people, the idea of sitting in a conference center meeting room for three days is anything but a good time, and yet, the Annual Conference is one of the things that defines us as United Methodists. It is three days that helps us to set direction for the coming year, to provide for the details of ministry that are not all that glamorous, and yet they are important. But more so, it brings together clergy and laity from the ±600 churches of our conference that we might discern the vision that God has for us as a conference. The operative word is “together.” Whenever we begin to think that it’s all about me, or even us in our own little corner of the kingdom, we lose sight of what God intends for the church. We are called to share one another’s joys and the burdens, to be a part of the great family of God with brothers and sisters around the world. As United Methodists, we are in ministry with Christians in Europe, Asia, Africa, Central and South America, and of course the United States. When a group of us from this congregation traveled to Honduras on a mission trip, we were sharing ministry with a United Methodist congregation in one of the poorest neighborhoods of Tegucigalpa, and yet this was a church that was vibrant and joyful and was sharing the gospel with those on the margins of society, the very people who had a special place in the heart of Jesus. We became a part of that ministry here in Butler because of that connection. When a new pastor starts a new ministry in a small African village and new people are coming to Jesus, we are part of that ministry. When we hit downtown Butler on Change the World day, people throughout the globe are doing the same thing, and we are making a difference for Jesus. I’ve been a life-long Methodist, but even if I weren’t, there is something about knowing that I am part of a greater ministry and a world-wide church that strengthens my faith, because we are living out the gospel as a church that embraces the blessings of all of God’s people – warts and all! While it’s easy to scoff at the structural hierarchy and “the system” of the church, it is this work that equips us to do ministry week in and week out with the resources, the people, and the prayer that we need. It is a blessing to know that we are not alone – not only is God with us, but so are God’s people.

In Christ,

Steve June ’10 – page 2

In Christ,

THANK YOU… I want to express a HUGE THANK YOU to my church family during my 19 month stint of unemployment. I've been offered and accepted a full time permanent position with MedPage Today in Little Falls as a staff accountant starting on June 1st. I couldn't have gone through this difficult period without the love, support, prayers, clothes, lunches, dinner, conversations, laughter and companionship from all of you. I feel truly blessed to be a part of such a wonderful family. I love you all.

With God's Love and Sunshine, Dawn Kruimer
