Dancers of all abilities are welcome, with many experienced dancers to help beginners. It is an aim to build up a repertoire of dances. Dances from Brittany do not usually require a partner, as they are performed in lines or circles. Dances from other parts of France are usually danced in couples or larger sets. Do not worry if you want to come on your own, as there will be others there who will dance with you. Some dances we teach are ‘mixers’, so you will get a chance to dance with other people anyway. After a short break for tea or coffee and biscuits, the evening continues with the bal – dancing to live music. A wide range of dances will be enjoyed. This part of the evening begins with the House Band, featuring all those who play in the music workshop, having the chance to play the tunes they have just been taught in the workshop, along with other tunes they have learned in previous Pentreffest workshops. After this, other musicians and groups have the chance to play. There will normally be one advertised group performing, but opportunity is there for others to play as well. (see also online)

Well comrades, winter is where we like it to be … in the past and we can settle back and enjoy the festival season and travel to our local folk clubs without having to wear snow shoes. Good eh? I’ve ventured out myself a bit of late, including a visit to the (www.hungryhorseacoustic.com) which meets at The Whitby Social Club, Chester Rd. Ellesmere Port, CH65 6QF. The main purpose of my visit was to catch a performance by their special guest .

1964 or thereabouts. We were both spring chickens then, Martin and I. I was pleased to discover that Martin is reviving some of the songs I remember from his earlier repertoire, songs such as ‘High Germany’ and ‘The Bedmaking’. But as ever, there were songs I’d never heard before too. Martin’s voice may no longer be quite what it was but I’ll always turn up to see such a legend. Hungry Horse Club organizers John & Angie Owen are also heavily involved in organizing

group, line in repartee which can’t fail to entertain. Also

Tom will need no introduction I’m sure, a genial veteran of

www.wirralfolkonthecoast.com . Another club I paid a visit to was (www.wrexhamfolkacoustic.club). This is a laid back and welcoming club (as all clubs should be) and has an upstairs function room in a well run and popular pub/restaurant (The Nag’s Head) in the centre of Wrexham. Future guests include singer/songwriting duo

, an Anglo/German combination which works well (but best not to mention Brexit I think). Resident group is , led by long time North Wales folkie

As for my local club, (www.rhylfolkclub.com), come Friday June 28th, we’ll be hosting a Western Swing band called

. Western what band I hear you say? Well, can you try and imagine something like Hank Williams crossed with Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli with Bill Black (Elvis’ slap bass player from Sun Records days) thrown in for good measure? No, can’t imagine that? Well you’ll just have to come along and see for yourself then. See you there at Tynewydd Community Centre, Coast Rd., Rhyl, LL18 3RD. Question: Answer:
