CATECHESIS CORNER The Rosary

The word rosary comes from La n and means “a garland of roses,” the rose being one of the flowers used to symbolize the Virgin Mary. If you were to ask what object is most em-blema c of Catholics, people would probably say, “The rosary, of course.” We’re familiar with the images: the silently moving lips of the old woman fingering her beads, the oversized rosary hanging from the waist of the wimpled nun, and more recently, the merely decora ve rosary hanging from the rearview mirror. A er Va can II the rosary fell into rela ve disuse. The same is true for Marian devo ons as a whole. But in recent years the rosary has made a comeback, and not just among Catholics. Many Protestants now say the rosary, recognizing it as a truly biblical form of prayer—a er all, the prayers that comprise it come mainly from the Bible. The rosary is a devo on in honor of the Virgin Mary. It con-sists of a set number of specific prayers. First are the introduc-tory prayers: one Apostles’ Creed (Credo), one Our Father (the Pater Noster or the Lord’s Prayer), three Hail Marys (Ave Ma-ria), one Glory Be (Gloria Patri).

The Apostle’s Creed

The Apostles’ Creed is so called not because it was composed by the apostles themselves, but because it expresses their teachings. The original form of the creed came into use around A.D. 125, and the present form dates from the fi h century. It reads this way: “I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was con-ceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered un-der Pon us Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He de-scended into hell. The third day he arose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. From thence he shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrec on of the body, and the life everlas ng. Amen.” Tradi onal Protestants are able to recite the Apostles’ Creed without qualms, meaning every line of it, though to some lines they must give meanings different from those given by Catholics, who composed the creed. For instance, we refer to “the holy Catholic Church,” meaning a par cular, iden fiable Church on earth. Protestants typically reinterpret this to refer to an “invisible church” consis ng of all “true believers” in Je-sus. Protestants, when they say the prayer, refer to the (lowercased) “holy catholic church,” using catholic merely in the sense of “universal,” not implying any connec on with the (uppercase) Catholic Church, which is based in Rome. (This is despite the fact that the term Catholic was already used to

refer to a par cular, visible Church by the second century and had already lost its broader meaning of “universal”). Despite these differences, Protestants embrace the Apostles’ Creed without reluctance, seeing it as embodying basic Chris an truths as they understand them.

The Lord’s Prayer

The next prayer in the rosary—the Our Father or Pater Nos-ter (from its opening words in La n), also known as the Lord’s Prayer—is even more acceptable to Protestants because Jesus himself taught it to his disciples. It is given in the Bible in two slightly different versions (cf. Ma . 6:9–13; Luke 11:2–4). The one given in Ma hew is the one we say. (We won’t reproduce it here. All Chris ans should have it memorized.)

The Hail Mary

The next prayer in the Rosary and the prayer that is really at the center of the devo on, is the Hail Mary. Since the Hail Mary is a prayer to Mary, many Protestants assume that it’s unbibli-cal. Quite the contrary, actually. Let’s look at it. The prayer be-gins, “Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.” This is noth-ing other than the gree ng the angel Gabriel gave Mary in Luke 1:28 (Confraternity Version). The next part reads this way: “Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.” This was exactly what Mary’s rela ve Elizabeth said to her in Luke 1:42. The only thing that has been added to these two verses are the names Jesus and Mary, to make clear who is be-ing referred to. So the first part of the Hail Mary is en rely bibli-cal. The second part of the Hail Mary is not taken straight from Scripture, but it is en rely biblical in the thoughts it expresses. It reads: “Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.” Let’s look at the first words. Some Protestants object to say-ing “Holy Mary” because they claim that Mary was a sinner like the rest of us. But Mary was a Chris an (the first Chris an, actu-ally—the first to accept Jesus: cf. Luke 1:45), and the Bible de-scribes Chris ans in general as holy. In fact, they are called saints, which means “holy ones” (cf. Eph. 1:1; Phil. 1:1, Col. 1:2). Furthermore, as the Mother of Jesus Christ, the incarnate sec-ond Person of the Blessed Trinity, Mary was certainly a very holy woman. To be con nued….

Fuente: The Catholic Survival Guide, Catholic Answers

FISHES AND LOAVES OUTREACH Fishes and Loaves Ministry is proud to announce that we have just completed another successful year of outreach to the poor in our community. With the support of parishioners of Sacred Heart/Saint Benedict Church, and a grant from the Community Founda on of San Benito County, we were able to provide emergency food to 856 families this year. In addi on to providing food to the poor five days a week from Sacred Heart Pastoral Center we also do outreach at Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas to truly needy families at our five local labor camps. The number of families at these camps varies from year to year. This year we served 170 families. The cost of these three visits is ap-proximately $6.550.00 each year. Our organiza on is unique in that we have basically no overhead. We are privileged to have the free use of the Pasto-ral Center kitchen and a crew of 20 plus dedicated volunteers. All of our volunteers are seniors and the outreach to the labor camps each year is conducted by seven men, five of whom are 84 years of age or older. It is inspiring to watch these hard-working men load up their trucks with groceries to deliver to the most needy among us to ensure that their holidays are a li le brighter. Fishes and Loaves Ministries has been in opera on for 33 years. We are grateful for the tremendous support we receive from our community, especially Sacred Heart/St. Benedict parishioners and the Community Founda on of San Benito County. With this con nued support we are confident that we will be able to provide outreach to the poor for a long me into the future. Any support you could contribute to this important minis-try would be greatly appreciated. For financial dona ons (checks payable to Fishes & Loaves) please mail to Sacred Heart/St. Benedict Parish, a en on Fishes and Loaves, 680 College Street, Hollister, CA 95023. To volunteer one or two mornings a month, please call Kathy Hough at 831-801-0265.
