This is an action focused convening to discuss implicit bias awareness, strategies and programmatic interventions to reduce the number of youth who unnecessarily come in contact with the juvenile justice system, and school-justice partnerships. The workshop will use literary examples of how our creative and entrepreneurial spirit is often smothered by adopting a certain code of conduct for mainstream acceptance. A Night of Expressions Talent Showcase (all ages) Friday, Feb. 16, 7 p.m. Free and open to the public. West Las Vegas Library Theatre, 951 W. Lake Mead Blvd. Performers ages 8-22 will showcase their talents in singing, dancing, the spoken word and music, all in recognition and celebration of Black History Month. Thursday, Feb. 22, 7 to 10 p.m. Featuring guest lecturer Dr. Runoko Rashidi. Lecture Topic: The Global Black Presence Moderated by Franklyn G. Verley III, host of “Like It Is Radio,” Power 88 FM. Rashidi is a historian, writer and public lecturer with a pronounced interest in the African foundations of humanity and civilizations and the presence and current conditions of black people throughout the global African community. He is particularly drawn to the African presence in India, Australia and the islands of the Pacific. To date, he has lectured in 55 countries. There will be a short question-and-answer session, along with cultural celebrations reflective of the African diaspora, including dancing, music, spoken word and affirmations reflecting African-American heritage.

Friday, Feb. 23, 7 to 10 p.m. Featuring keynote speakers Drs. Ashra and Merira Kwesi. Moderated by Franklyn G. Verley III, host of “Like It Is Radio,” Power 88 FM. Join us in celebrating leading voices that represent the vast range of the black experience by welcoming Drs. Ashra and Merira Kwesi. Their lectures on African history, civilization, religion and culture are “par excellence.” They present lively and dynamic multimedia productions and videos and conduct Africa-centered tours to Egypt and Ethiopia. Based on their study and travel, they reveal startling and profound information on the African origin of many of the concepts and symbols now utilized by the western world.

Saturday, Feb. 24, 2 to 5 p.m. Community Class & Workshop Featured Guest Lecturer Mr. Antonio Fargas. Lecture Topic: A Black Actor’s view of Hollywood/Tribute to our icon. Moderated by Lady AK of “The Breakdown” on Power 88 FM, founder of AK’s Closet, actress and comedienne. Lecturer, actor, director, and producer: Antonio Juan Fargas is an American icon known for his roles in 1970s movies, as well as his portrayal of “Huggy Bear” in the “Starsky and Hutch” TV series. Fargas has more than 129 film and TV credits to his name. Continuing in his role as a social activist, Fargas will discuss black Hollywood now and then, offering his experiences as a backdrop.
