• We form the past perfect continuous with ‘had been’and the main verb with the -ing suffix. The police hadbeen questioning the suspect for hours before she confessed.

• We form negations by putting not after ‘had’. Shehad not/hadn’t been using her iPod for long when thescreen went blank.

• We form questions by putting ‘had’ before thesubject. Had you been shopping for hours?
