Freud’s ideas about mental illness
When Freud was a young doctor people with mental illness were treated cruelly
They were locked up and sometimes shaken to shake out demons
He was the first person to think about mental health as opposed to physical health
He learnt about hypnotism but rejected it But he realised the mind was powerful and
could cause mental health problems

Freud on sexual thoughts
The reason Freud became so famous was because he believed sexual issues were very important for humans
People did not talk about sex in those days! When Freud talked about repressed unconscious thoughts he often
meant unconscious sexual desires
