Salvation is not put- ting a man into Heaven, but putting Heaven into man. Maltbie D. Babcock Peggy and Angela Jackson were in Florida last week. They were joined by Kimberly Jack- son who flew down from Paramus, NJ, where she is a stylist and manager for Nordstrom. Nancy Littlejohn host- ed a Father’s Day lunch honoring her husband Tommy with their chil- dren and grandchildren Saturday. They enjoyed a lot of good food and an ice cream cake. Terri Silverstein Barker, formerly of Brownsville who lives in Houston,TX, is creating and publishing her own cookbook with handwritten recipes. She is desperately looking for a recipe for Schnek- en, a German sweet roll that Dorothy Silverstein either used to make or had made by someone in Brownsville. If you hap- pen to have that recipe or know about this, please call Terri’s sister-in-law, Sandra Silverstein at 772.1763. Robert and Peggy Haynes’ daughter, Stacy High and husband, Matt, are expecting a baby boy in August. Matt works for International Paper and is being moved to Paris, TX, in July, but they hope it will only be for two or three years and then they plan to move back to the Memphis area. Pam Russell found a wonderful article in the alumni magazine of Vanderbilt University’s College of Arts and Sci- ence written by Wes Pow- ell, son of Pat and Railey Powell who received his BA there in 1991. The ar- ticle entitled, “Why I said yes to Guantanamo,” explains why a corpo- rate litigator in a large law firm in New York City--one who had lived through being at work near the World Trade Center on 9/11--would agree to work pro bono to represent Guantana- mo prisoners. Working on cases since 2004, Wes says, “No other profes- sional experience has been as challenging, and I’ve grown enormously as a person and lawyer because of it.” There are copies in the Russell Dental Office if anyone would like to read it. Another Brownsville native who had done well is Mark Medford, son of Billy Joe and Ann Medford. Mark was featured in the MBQ Memphis Magazine as a ‘power player’ in Mem- phis business. Mark has a Master’s in Account- ing from Ole Miss and is now the President/CEO of Vining Sparks. We are proud of both of these young men. Blair Simpson was in Jackson all last week to perform as a backup singer at the Miss Ten- nessee Pageant along with Christina Gooch and Carmen Wagster. Roland and Ann Reid have been very busy the last few weeks travel- ing, they were at Cocoa Beach, FL. with grandson Will Vestal, son of Steph- anie Angotti of Memphis, and then to Hilton Head Island, S.C. with Will and two other grandchildren, Michael and Anna Reid, who are the children of Judge Roland Reid. Libba Baddour and Suzie Tipton traveled to Jackson, MS, for the week- end with Annette and Larry Hill for a Father’s Day visit with Marie and Reed Hill. Joining them there were Flo and Frank Bryan and Sue Joey and Bryan Geter. They were all excited by the news that Marie and Reed are expecting their first child in January 2011. A beautiful celebra- tion of the life of John Gorman, Sr. was held at the Brownsville Baptist Church Saturday. He was remembered by his heri- tage, as a veteran and as a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather most appropriately on Fa- ther’s Day weekend, but also as being a warrior for Christ. He was active in his faith, his church and as a Gideon. He was loved by all and will cer- tainly be missed. Prayer requests this week: Welch Hopkins, who is in University Hospital in Jackson, MS, following a serious car wreck; Janice Nation who underwent surgery last week; Pat Bullifin, who is in Rehab at Jackson General; and David Sills, who has suffered a stroke and has been moved to the Restorative Care Unit at Baptist East. My daughter-in-law Ro- salyn was aboard that train on a business trip for her employer, FedEx. Thought for the Week: “Faith Vs. Control” When you obsess over problems instead of look- ing to God for solutions, the enemy will magnify your fears. If he can’t get you to worry about the present he’ll remind you of everything that could go wrong in the future! Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “All I have seen, has taught me to trust God for all I haven’t seen.” The last time you checked, wasn’t God still bigger than any terrorist attack, financial disaster, illness, accusation, or mess you found yourself in? Well, He hasn’t changed! Da- vid said, “He won’t go to sleep…The Lord is… at your right side…[He] will…keep you safe… wherever you go” (Ps 121:3-8 CEV); plus His angels are watching over you 24/7. It all comes down to faith vs. control. You can struggle to han- dle things on your own – or trust your Heavenly Father. That’s the choice! It’s not about ‘blind faith,’ it’s about believing that God is who He says He is. And it’s an issue you need to settle in your mind once and for all, because if you don’t be- lieve He wants only the best for you, you’ll keep trying to run the show. Control isn’t responsibil- ity. Responsibility is do- ing your part by praying, obeying, and trusting God. Control is manipu- lating the circumstances to engineer the outcome you want. Jesus knows how we like holding on to things we’re not wise enough to control, so He said, “If you want to save your life, you will destroy it. But if you give [it] up…for me, you will save it” (Lk 9:24 CEV). Bottom line – you either trust God or you don’t! Scripture Of The Day: “If you give up your life for me, you will save it.” - Luke 9:24 (CEV) “No matter where we work, we can work for God.” This is our thought for the week by Jill Woodward of Georgia as published in the Upper Room Devotional. We are called to serve God in many different places. Some may follow Him to a foreign land while others may serve Him in public office or home- makers, factory workers, nurses, police officers, etc. While the disciples in His day could follow in His earthly footprints, we have the Holy Spirit who helps us hear when He speaks and calls us to be in His service. In whatever field you have been lead to serve, you can share His love with others so they too can serve Him. Congratulations to Chasity Williams on the birth of twins, Kayleigh Joy Victoria and Andrew Bradon Lee. They were born Saturday, June 12 at St. Francis in Bartlett. Kayleigh weighed 3 lbs 4 oz and Andrew weighed 4 lbs 10 oz. They have a long road ahead and are in need of prayers. I attended a cookout at the Park of Dreams Fri- day, June 11 with Lead- ership classmates, Tracy Taylor, Sam Mathes and Leslie Keathley hosted by the Haywood County Multi-Handicapped Cen- ter. Also in attendance were John Ashworth, Hayden Hooper, the staff and students of the cen- ter. Thank you to the Multi-Handicapped Cen- ter for a great lunch. Speaking of the Park of Dreams, this was my first time going to the park since the renova- tions were made and it is really nice. So pack a picnic and check it out. The Mt. Pleasant con- gregation was blessed to have Mildred and Karl Shumaker visit with us Sunday, June 13. The spe- cial music was presented by Mildred playing the fiddle with Wilson Pow- ell accompanying her on the organ. They stopped to visit family while en route to their next stop of Branson, MO. Birthday celebrations this week include Jordan Cates, Virginia Williams, Russ Stoots, David Sim- mons, Jamie Holmes, Ju- lie Bruce, Sharon Watson, Nancy Hendrix, Randall Baggett and Paige Aus- tin. Sharon, the more can- dles, the bigger the wish. Wishing you a very Hap- py Birthday. Travis and I will cel- ebrate our 28th wedding anniversary June 25. Happy Anniversary to Gilbert and Veronica Evans who will celebrate their one-year anniver- sary June 27. We wish you many more years to- gether.
