Are you an analog person in a digital world?

What's that you ask? Well, we do live in exponential times and the amount of technology information doubles every two years; ever stop to think what we did BG – before Google? In this issue of the Patriot we take a look at computerized technology (aka the digital age) and the impact it has on our lives and business.

The tools we use define and shape our thinking, so it's safe to say that technology is in some ways rewiring our brains. Did you know there are 695 million Facebook users, more than 148 million LinkedIn users, and over 140 million tweets created each day? It's enough to make one dizzy, so how does one keep up?

Experience is often considered the best teacher of knowledge, and since we cannot encounter everything, other people's experiences become our surrogate for knowledge. Do you feel like you are an analog person in a digital world? Never fear, you're not alone. We have tapped into the BABC OC member-ship to collect knowledge to share with you. In the pages of this issue you'll learn how BABC members tap into technology to connect better with clients, enhance their business and embrace all life has to offer through social media.

On a lighter note, with the holidays' fast approaching, I'm sure your social life like mine is about to get really busy, so don't forget to put on your calendar our many significant events still to come (see back page), and particularly our social event of the year – the Annual Christmas Lunch, on Friday December

The Internet has existed since 1969, but it was with the invention of the World Wide Web in 1989 by British scientist Tim Berners-Lee and its implementation in 1991 that the Internet truly became a global network. Today the Internet has become the ultimate platform for accelerating the flow of information.

Like it or not, we are a part of the information age, or the computer age or digital age if you prefer. The information age has changed culture, language, and it has even changed the thought process. As the industrial revolution brought many changes to traditional industry, the digital age has also wrought changes. Our economy is now very much based on the manipulation of information. Technology is showing us that the medium is the message.

The membership of the BABC OC is wonderfully diverse and covers a broad range of industries and businesses. We asked some of our members how technology has changed the way they do business, or how it drives their business, Here's what they had to say.

QR Codes – can you say chocolate?

Digitally Speaking BABC Members Rock!

Unless you live under a rock, you've probably seen a QR code. They're in magazines, newspa-pers, business cards, store windows, billboards and would you believe it – even on chocolate! The square, maze-like QR codes are popping up everywhere and consumers are catching on to the

continued on page 8...

concept. According to a recent study, fifty-seven percent of Facebook users have scanned a QR code. Most QR codes link to a company website, but this is a trend to watch as businesses are starting to think outside of the box. BABC member Pauline Johnson of Pauline's Professional Potpourri says she can print QR codes on anything, including chocolate. Pauline's background as an advertising agency executive and now as a business owner of an advertising promotions company means that her clients get the benefit of her creativ-ity as she shares new ways to generate business through the use of QR codes. Says Pauline QR codes are being used to take marketing campaigns to new levels. For example, Skinny Cow puts QR codes on the tops of ice cream containers to direct consumers to enter a sweepstakes, customers of AMC movie theatres can scan QR codes on signs in the theatre to order gift cards, direct mail campaigns instruct recipients to scan the code to receive a coupon. Pauline says QR codes are used by insurance companies, hospitals, Realtors, restaurants – there are all kinds of businesses who find a million and one ways to use them. Ever wondered how a QR code is generated, or how a 3D code can help double the effectiveness of a QR code? Pauline can tell you, or better yet, she'll send you a free guidebook on how to generate and use QR codes – you can contact her through her website or scan her QR code opposite.

Why Skype is turning landline users into dinosaurs!

www.PaulinesPromotions.com

If you haven't met Janet Kilby yet you need to! Before she moved stateside a few years ago and to California last year, she was the Manager of IT, Operations and Support for the

British Parliament under Tony Blair. Today she is an IT consul-tant for businesses. Family, friends and businesses will tell you she's their go to resource for all things IT including how to set up Skype for personal and/or business use.

Skype is a software application that allows users to make voice and video calls and chats over the Internet. Calls to other users within the Skype service are free, while calls to both traditional land line telephones and mobile phones can be made for a fee. Skype has also become popular for its additional features which include instant messaging, file transfer, and videoconferencing. As of September 2011 Skype has 929 million registered users. Skype made headlines earlier this year when Microsoft Corporation agreed to acquire Skype Communications, for US $8.5 billion.

Janet believes it's only a matter of time before regular land line phones (POTS Lines) become obsolete. “Many people today are already using voice over internet protocol (VoIP) and as smart phones become ever smarter, and more and more applications are created, usage will continue to grow” said Janet. Skype interface with social media platforms is also a growing trend she noted. VoIP is popping up everywhere such

as AT&T's similar technology product U-Verse that combines, internet, phone and television in one bundle.

Location has become irrelevant said Janet. State-of-the-art web-conferencing software can get expensive, but Skype allows busi-ness professionals, freelancers and family members to connect with

others all over the world at reduced cost. Do business in bed. Roll out of bed, freshen up, throw on a tie or put on some earrings, and no one will know that you woke up five minutes before your big meeting. If you're feeling especially lazy, just sign on to the phone service — no one will know you're still in your pajamas. Skype may also help you quit your job and start your own business from home, or convince your boss to let you telecommute. There is even applications like Zapeller that let you get back at telemarketers by tricking them into believing that the VoIP line has been disconnected – how cool is that! Contact Janet at .

Goodbye bricks - hello clicks!

80% of homebuyers start their search on the Internet – Realtor.com, Zillow, Trulia, Google, Yahoo, FrontDoor the list goes on and on. Promoting a property for sale today isn't simply hammering in a for sale sign on the front lawn, today's real estate agents post listings on at least 330 websites – that's a lot of eyeballs looking at the home you have for sale.

Real estate broker John Miller says technology has changed many ways the real estate industry does business. Not only from a consumer marketing standpoint, but even to the fact that brokers are moving away from providing brick and mortar offices as agents conduct their business with 'clicks' from their home office or remote location.

Today's real estate software connects people and data. Listings, contacts, leads, sales trends, as well as external data like foreclosures, demographics and marketing lists, are now available at a mouse click or a snap of a QR code on a smart phone. These days only four percent of homebuyers find their home via the newspaper, so agents are spending their market-

GOING DIGITAL FOR THE HOLIDAYS

I know we're in the middle of the summer heat so why am I bringing up the holidays? Am I talking Labor Day? Definitely not. I'm referring to the big holiday season in December. The time to start planning your holiday marketing efforts is now. That is unless your organization plans on going old school with pre-printed holiday greeting cards. Boring! If that's what you have been doing it's time to step it up with some creative interactive marketing for the holidays.

Depending on your budget, there are a number of approaches to take. Direct email is an extremely cost effec-tive approach and I strongly recommend everyone to utilize this channel at the very least. But for those with a little flexibility, add some additional tactics to the mix. Social Media is a given and hopefully by now, everyone reading this has some sort of presence on the major social networks. A solid strategy is to utilize these multiple channels to drive your audience to a microsite dedicated to your holiday campaign. This allows people to be focused on your holiday message and following through on intended courses of action.

The possibilities for digital holiday campaigns are endless. Here are some examples of past campaigns from a variety of sources but I'll start it off with one from Rhythm Interactive that rocked the house.

Rhythm Dance Off - An interactive campaign where Rhythm staff members competed in a dance off to contribute a monetary gift to the charity of their choice.

Elf Yourself - This one epitomizes the viral effect that every marketer wants with their campaign, brought to you by Office Max.

Another point of consideration is how your holiday marketing efforts perform over mobile media. Smart phones and tablets are exploding in the marketplace and offer a unique experi-ence. Your campaign can even take advantage of mobile technologies such as gps to incorporate location-based marketing. At a minimum, your campaigns should incorporate an adaptive design to accommodate your mobile audience.

Going digital with your holiday marketing this upcoming season is the right choice. Most likely, the upcoming holiday season will be challenging as an uncertain economy causes trepidation among consumers and businesses alike. The cost effectiveness and measurability of interactive marketing will deliver you the most value for your efforts.

Rhythm Interactive is a full-service interactive marketing agency. They combine strategic marketing, experience design and elegant technology to create immersive brand experi-ences that win customers' hearts and minds so when it comes time to buy, they'll think of you and only you. http://www.rinteractive.net

As scholarship recipients, Riley a senior at the Orange County High School of the Arts, and Hernandez a Junior from Corona Del Mar High School attended the ACS International School British Studies Summer Program that was created to explore the enduring impact of British culture. According to the girls, highlights of the trip included climbing 330 steps up the Great Fire Monument, a private group tour of the Houses of Parliament, punting at Oxford, private group workshop at the Globe Theatre and front row tickets to 'Billy Elliot'. The students also got an eyeful of London from their own private capsule on the London Eye. received a call asking if they could deliver 275 servings of their Spotted Dick dessert to the studio in L.A. before 9 a.m. on September 13th for the taping of that days' show. The show's theme was 'weirdly named foods' and the pud was to be served with Ben & Jerry's latest ice-

ing money buying keywords, online banners and employing SEO (search engine optimization) techniques to drive traffic to their websites. Mobile commerce is 4.9 billion dollar industry in the U.S. today. New technology applications not only help the homebuyer or seller find or sell a home, but they make life easier for the agent too.

The proliferation of social media sites, while a boon to business can also be a big time drain acknowledged John. Today's tech savvy agent is turning to programs like HootSuite which helps to manage multiple social media networks from one place and best of all, there's even an excellent free version. Using HootSuite allows you to manage up to five networks on one dashboard. If you have a Twitter, Facebook profile, Facebook page, and LinkedIn account connected to HootSuite you can post updates to one, two or all networks if desired – saving time as you do not need to jump from site to site. HootSuite also has a built-in analytic for shortened urls - enabling users to get analytic

data on these links so the user can see how many times the link was clicked – important when you want to determine which links are important to your followers and friends. Yes, technology has changed the face of real estate from both the consumer and an agent's perspective. Utilizing technology means real estate team John and Sherry Miller sell property from Orange County California, to Tuscany, Italy or Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - all with a click of their mouse. Contact them at .http://johnandsherrymiller.prudentialcal.com

As President John says in his message; “knowledge is mostly gained by experience, and other people's experiences often become our surrogate for knowledge” –so if you have a technology update, or are a trend spotter, please share the wealth with the readers of the Patriot – we look forward to hearing from you. Whether you like it or not, don't care or have enough time, your business is online and someone is or has talked about it. A Nielsen study from August 2010 shows people spend up to a third of their online time on social media sites, specifically Facebook, which creates an opportunity for small businesses to build a following. Not sure where to start? No worries, here are a few tips on how your business can use social networking to generate customers and boost your bottom line.

Your Online Presence should Reflect your Actual BusinessExecutives and entrepreneurs should use their own social media profiles to promote their businesses, and business news. Take a critical look at your own Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn pages and see if they reflect your business. You want customers to be able to learn about your company no matter what page they stumble upon online.

Engage and Interact with your CustomersOffer product or service specials and promotions online to generate a buzz about your brand. Engages customers by offering live Q & A's on Facebook, giving them the opportunity to pose questions and get real-time advice and tips. Alternatively, you can post articles up with your view and ask open-ended questions to generate online dialogue.

I queried a fellow traveler at an airport who I noticed was reading Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap...and Others Don't by Jim Collins, and then I grabbed a copy from the bookstore to read on my flight. This

book details how good companies became great companies, and how they went about doing so. It emphasizes how impor-tant it is to have the right people on the bus and discusses the level of engagement needed to achieve success. I have shared and given away about twenty copies if this book. The websites that garner most of my attention are travel and review sites like TripAdvisor, Orbitz and Yelp… these sites are a great way to track our brand reputation and respond in a timely fashion to keep our customer satisfaction factor high.

INQUIRING MINDS WANT TO KNOW:The Patriot asked the BABC OC Board of Directors

“What are you reading these days & what are your favorite 'go-to' business resource sites? “

John Mowbray International Trade & Tourism Specialist, Orange County Travel Services, Inc.

On a daily basis, I am an unrepentant and avid current affairs observer, both domestic & international. My go-to-site for the most instantaneous “Dateline & Press Release”

Mitchell L. Wexler, Partner Fragomen, Del Rey, Bernsen & Loewy, LLP

Ever since I got my iPad a week or so ago, I haven't picked up a book or put IT down. I have just scratched the surface as to its real capabilities but so far I am

having fun with it. Business, schmizness. I use it for fun games, music and "face-to-face" video phone calls with friends and family. As closet chef, I use it for cool recipes too. There is app for everything. On the business side, I use my iPad to view CNN, Wall Street Journal and NY Times to stay on top of the business activity of my corporate clients. As an immigration lawyer, I regularly visit various government web sites including the US State Dept, Dept of Homeland Security and Dept of Labor.

info is the Drudge Report, hands down ( ). Drudge is a brilliant aggregate compilation of newswires from around the globe immediately revealing the news of the world. This allows me to stay abreast of daily events that affect my clients and business marketplace, as news is still developing. Another valuable business site is , a digital marketplace for all US government contracts. The site is one of President George W. Bush's commerce efforts to level the playing field for entrepreneurs, allowing bidding access to small and large companies equally. I am currently finishing an in depth “Biography of Albert Einstein's” amazing life & times, and secondly enjoying John Grisham's recent novel of interna-tional intrigue – “The Broker”.

There are so many good business books to read it's hard to pin down my favorite. The Goal: A Process of Ongoing Improvement by Eliyahu M. Goldratt and Jeff Cox immedi-ately springs to mind. It teaches how to get

through day-to-day activities to make things work. It is particu-larly good for manufacturing industries who deal with produc-tivity and quality issues. I also like Purple Cow: Transform Your Business by Being Remarkable by Seth Godin, it's an amazing book that gives lessons on how to make your busi-ness standout from the crowd. Five Hidden Mistakes CEOs Make: How to Unlock the Secrets that Drive Growth and Profitability by Tom Northup is another dog-eared book on my bookshelf. Crossing the chasm: marketing and selling high-tech products to mainstream customers by Geoffrey A. Moore is a really good resource book for marketing high-tech industries. I do a lot of surfing on the web – I'm a news junkie and need to keep up with global news because I have a global customer base. As well as manufacturing websites, I also regularly check out my customer's websites.
