With film credits including Miss Potter, Babe, Babe – Pig in the City, Children of the Revolution, A Little Bit of Soul and The Nugget, as well as Imax films Antarctica, Imagine, The Edge and Solarmax, Nigel Westlake has established a formidable international presence.

He is known for his sweeping, pictorial scores and has received accolades from APRA, the New York International Radio Festival and the Screen Composers Guild. His concert works have been performed by ensembles and orchestras internationally, and Omphalo Centric Lecture (1984), has become one of the most frequently performed and recorded works in the percussion repertoire, taken up by groups in North America, Japan and Europe as well as Australia.

In 1994, the Kennedy Miller post-production studio in Kings Cross was bursting at the seams with sound editors, visual effect artists, CGI programmers, film editors, animatronic operators and the then 30-something composer Nigel Westlake. Westlake has Technicolor memories of that time: ‘We were all part of the Babe family, and all of us were trying to weave a tale that was underpinned by this simple philosophy – the idea that the purity of an unprejudiced spirit can be a real and tangible force for positive change in the world.’

At the time, Nigel was living with his young family in St Albans, two hour’s northwest of Sydney. Engaging him to write the film score was a leap of faith – he’d only scored two other feature-length films. ‘I set up a room at the studio, and virtually didn’t go home for several months.’ Director Chris Noonan and producer

George Miller would visit up to three times a day. ‘Every morning Chris would hand me notes for that day’s work. It was so clear how he wanted the music to function in the film. It was a godsend to have someone so proscriptive. Chris wasn’t telling me what to do musically, but telling me what he wanted the music to achieve dramatically. It was really exciting to have such a focus, and for it not to be a hit-and-miss process.’

The main theme – the ‘Babe’ theme – is lifted directly from the famous maestoso passage in the third movement of Camille Saint-Saëns’ so-called ‘Organ Symphony’, his Symphony No.3 (1886). In the context of the film score, the organ is never heard. ‘It was too heavy, too gothic, for the tone of the movie’, says Nigel, ‘but the theme is optimistic and wholesome, and very versatile. It can be subtle and sweet, or heraldic and jubilant, depending on the demands of the scene.’

Did Saint-Saëns like animals? Well sure, his ‘grand zoological fantasy’ The Carnival of the Animals (1886) might suggest a fond affinity. But in fact that collection of musical parodies was written for private performance only, and Saint-Saëns banned all public performances during his lifetime, with the exception of The Swan.

In fact, Saint-Saëns’ Organ Symphony wasn’t the direct inspiration for Babe’s theme. In the 1970s, pop singers Scott Fitzgerald and Yvonne Keeley had a Top of the Pops hit in Britain and Australia with the song ‘If I had words’, which took the same maestoso melody from Saint-Saëns and added a reggae beat. It was this song, with lyrics by Jonathan Hodge, that Chris Noonan and George Miller had already settled on before Nigel joined the team.

If I had words, to make a day for you,

I would make this day, last for all time,

Then fill the night deep in moonshine.

Chris Noonan and George Miller’s screenplay for Babe was based on the 1983 children’s novel The Sheep-Pig by Dick King-Smith, who had spent 20 years working as a farmer in rural England. In a nod to the story’s provenance, the sheepdog championship takes place at ‘Kingsmith Fairground’ and towards the beginning of the film, Esme Hoggett polishes a trophy for the ‘Kingsmith Dick Show’

is in question, and again as the end credits roll: all’s well that ends well, and the trio of mice who appear at each of the scene changes serenade the audience out of the theatre with a more comic touch. Their performance is in fact a sped-up version of the 1970s pop song.

Chris Noonan says the song ‘was a stake in the ground for Nigel. You can have an infinite number of possibilities when you start scoring something. It’s good to limit that infinity down a bit.’ Nigel, for his part, tried to talk both director and producer out of using Saint-Saëns’ theme, and championed the idea of only using original music. ‘I was concerned about the exploitation of classical music for commercial gain. Naïvely, I suggested a couple of alternate melodies that were quickly rejected; the Saint-Saëns was already ingrained as part of their conception of the film.’ He soon came to appreciate the theme’s adaptability for dramatic purpose.

In total, the 92-minute film contains a 78-minute score, of which 10 minutes come from the Saint-Saëns, 62 minutes are original music from Nigel, and the remainder, music by Léo Delibes (Pizzicato, from the ballet Sylvia) and Edvard Grieg (Springdans, a Norwegian leaping dance from his Lyric Pieces, Op.47, for piano).

Nigel’s original music introduces two other leitmotifs – themes that accompany a character or idea in the story. Farmer Hoggett, as the other central character, earned one of his very own. ‘He’s a hard-working, productive man. Somewhat eccentric, but completely honest.’ James Cromwell, who plays Hoggett, is tall and slim. ‘The bassoon was the logical choice for him. In the right context, it can lend itself to slightly comical situations, but is capable of communicating poise and integrity at the same time.’ Incidentally, it’s rumoured that Cromwell nearly turned down the role on the basis that the script had only about 16 lines of dialogue. The film subsequently garnered him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor in a Supporting Role.

Nigel’s other original theme, nicknamed The River of Sadness, underscored the dark fate that awaited many of the farmyard friends. For instance, the moment when the pigs are being herded into the meat truck to be transported to ‘that other world of endless pleasures’. George Miller asked for ‘poignant, heartrending music at this point,’ says Nigel. ‘I wanted to imbue it with immense tragedy. It’s some of the saddest music I’d written up to that point in my life.’

Producer George Miller was very proactive in the creation of the film score, and Nigel felt a genuine enthusiasm and fondness from him for the music he was writing. ‘George seemed to love the music from the sheep rustling scene. He rang me up quite a few times from Los Angeles, gridlocked in LA traffic. He’d call

and say “Nigel, play me the sheep rustling scene.” I’d turn the speakers up and play it to him down the phone.’

For Nigel, a film score’s purpose is ‘to lead the audience’s nose to the source of the dramatic subtext and emotional content. There’s a fine line between manipulating your audience through music to force the drama down their throats and allowing them to discover it for themselves.’

In re-visiting the score in 2014, Nigel set aside a number of months – much longer than he’d originally spent writing it – to prepare it for live performance accompanying the film. Conscientious to a fault, Nigel says he ‘couldn’t handle the thought of standing in front of an orchestra with something that I knew I could have done better’.

Looking at the revised score horizontally, he says it’s identical. ‘The music starts and stops in the same places, hits all the same sync points, has all the same melodies. It maintains 100 per cent integrity to the original.’ Vertically, however, through the orchestration, he has adapted the score to better suit live performance. ‘You can do things in a recording studio that just aren’t possible in a concert hall. When it’s live, it’s all happening in the moment, so there’s not the same chance to move a microphone closer for greater warmth. Using the original as bare bones, I’ve enriched it by consolidating textures and colours. There’s different harmonic distribution of the notes, different voicings. The melodic ideas have been reinforced and given more colouration within the orchestration.’

‘Music can serve a different function for every film. The score for Babe is very proactive. It’s enmeshed in the onscreen action, almost like another character.’ Nigel says the score is very much in the style of a traditional storybook. ‘The idea was that the score would sound like some kind of classical symphony. Back in 1994, the last thing I wrote was the first thing you hear.’ The “overture” plays underneath the opening scene. Just as the camera reveals all the characters, the music too ‘reveals all the musical elements before you actually see them, functioning in the same way as a classical form overture. I look back now and see the use of classical elements as very clever. At the time I had trouble accepting George and Chris’s instructions to use the Saint-Saëns, Grieg and Delibes, but now I recognise it as something of a stroke of genius that has helped to make the film timeless.’

Following clarinet studies with his father, Donald Westlake (former principal clarinettist with the SSO), Nigel Westlake left the Sydney Conservatorium High School early to pursue a performance career. He toured Australia and the world performing as a freelance clarinettist, bass clarinettist and saxophonist with ballet companies, a circus troupe, chamber music ensembles, fusion bands and orchestras. He went on to perform with the Australia Ensemble (1987–1992) and was later a member of guitarist John Williams’ group Attacca, as both performer and composer.

In the late 1970s he formed a classical/jazz-rock/world music/fusion band to play original compositions. It was during this time he began to receive offers to compose for radio, circus, television and film. In 1983 he studied bass clarinet with Harry Sparnaay and composition with Theo Loevendie in the Netherlands. The following year he was appointed composer in residence for ABC Radio. At first he balanced his life as a composer with a busy international performing schedule, but in the early 1990s he turned his focus to composition.

His film credits include Paper Planes, Miss Potter, Babe, Babe – Pig in the City, Children of the Revolution and Imax films such as Antarctica, The Edge, Imagine and Solarmax, and his work for television encompasses documentaries, telemovies, news themes and station idents.

His Opus 1, Omphalo Centric Lecture for percussion quartet (1984) has become one of the most frequently performed and recorded works in the percussion repertoire. Recent concert works include Missa Solis – Requiem for Eli (Orchestral Work of the Year at the APRA–AMC 2012 Art Music Awards, Best New Composition in the 2011 Limelight Awards, and winner of the 2013 Paul Lowin Orchestral Prize) and Compassion – a song cycle composed with singer-songwriter Lior and commissioned by the SSO (2014 ARIA for Best Classical Album). In addition to 15 APRA awards, his composing accolades include the Gold Medal at the New York International Radio Festival.

He made his conducting debut with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra in 1997 and has since worked with all the major Australian orchestras. He made his SSO debut in 2011, conducting Missa Solis, and appeared more recently conducting Compassion.

In recent years he has been awarded an honorary Doctorate in Music by the University of New South Wales, and was appointed composer in residence for the 2012 Australian Festival of Chamber Music. In 2008 he formed the Smugglers of Light Foundation in memory of his son Eli.

The orchestra’s first Chief Conductor was Sir Eugene Goossens, appointed in 1947; he was followed by Nicolai Malko, Dean Dixon, Moshe Atzmon, Willem van Otterloo, Louis Frémaux, Sir Charles Mackerras, Zdenĕk Mácal, Stuart Challender, Edo de Waart and Gianluigi Gelmetti. Vladimir Ashkenazy was Principal Conductor from 2009 to 2013. The orchestra’s history also boasts collaborations with legendary figures

such as George Szell, Sir Thomas Beecham, Otto Klemperer and Igor Stravinsky.

The SSO’s award-winning education program is central to its commitment to the future of live symphonic music, developing audiences and engaging the participation of young people. The orchestra promotes the work of Australian composers through performances, recordings and its commissioning program. Recent premieres have included major works by Ross Edwards, Lee Bracegirdle, Gordon Kerry, Mary Finsterer, Nigel Westlake and Georges Lentz, and the orchestra’s recordings of music by Brett Dean have been released on both the BIS and SSO Live labels.

Other releases on the SSO Live label, established in 2006, include performances with Alexander Lazarev, Gianluigi Gelmetti, Sir Charles Mackerras, Vladimir Ashkenazy and David Robertson. In 2010–11 the orchestra made concert recordings of the complete Mahler symphonies with Ashkenazy, and has also released recordings of Rachmaninoff and Elgar orchestral works on the Exton/Triton labels, as well as numerous recordings on ABC Classics.

This is the third year of David Robertson’s tenure as Chief Conductor and Artistic Director.
