Early Life

• George Herman Ruth Jr., born February 6th, 1895

• Grew up in Baltimore, Maryland• Had 7 brothers and sisters, only one

lived past infancy• Mom died when he was a teenager

(tuberculosis)

St. Mary’s Industrial School for Boys

• Sent there when he was seven years old by his father

• Lived there for the next twelve years, until he was signed to his first minor league team

• Discovered baseball and started to play for the school league as a pitcher

Getting Signed

• Jack Dunn went to a championship interschool game and saw Ruth pitch, signed him when he was 19

• Played for the (then minor league) Baltimore Orioles

• Played in the minors for only 5 months then got traded to the Red Sox

Life in the Majors• Sold to the

Red Sox on July 7, 1914 and played his first ML game 4 days later

• Starting in 1918, he began to hit and field more and pitch less•Won 3

• Sold to the Yankees December 26, 1919, and would play for them for almost the rest of his career

• Won 4 World Series while on the team• Set most of his records while with the Yankees

• Sold to the Boston Braves February 26th, 1935

• Was VP and assistant manager• Retired from baseball at the end of the

season

The End of the Babe

• Discovered he had a rare cancer in his neck in 1946

• Got slightly better for a while, but the cancer reappeared in 1948

• Died August 16th, 1948 of pneumonia caused by his cancer
