SAFETY SYSTEM

Car Seat Recommendations for Children• Select a car seat based on your child’s age and size, and choose a seat that fi ts in your vehicle and use it every time.

• Always refer to your specifi c car seat manufacturer’s instructions; read the vehicle owner’s manual on how to install the car seat using the seat belt or LATCH system; and check height and weight limits.

• To maximize safety, keep your child in the car seat for as long as possible, as along as the child fi ts within the manufacturer’s height and weight requirements.

• Keep your child in the back seat at least through age 12.

Birth - 12 monthsYour child under age 1 should always ride in a rear-facing car seat. There are different types of rear-facing car seats: Infant-only seats can only be used rear-facing.Convertible and 3-in-1 car seats typically have higher height and weight limits for the rear-facing position, allowing you to keep your child rear-facing for a longer period of time.

1 - 3 yearsKeep your child rear-facing as long as possible. It’s the best way to keep him or her safe. your child should remain in a rear-facing car seat until he or she reaches the top height or weight limit allowed by your car seat’s manufacturer. Once your child outgrows the rear-facing car seat, your child is ready to travel in a forward-facing car seat with a harness.

4 - 7 yearsKeep your child in a forward-facing car seat with a harness until he or she reaches the top height or weight limit allowed by your car seat’s manufacturer. Once your child outgrows the forward-facing car seat with a harness, it’s time to travel in a booster seat, but still in the back seat.

8 - 12 yearsKeep your child in a booster seat until he or she is big enough to fi t in a seat belt properly. For a seat belt to fi t properly the lap belt must lie snugly across the upper thighs, not the stomach. The shoulder belt should lie snug across the shoulder and chest and not cross the neck or face. Remember: your child should still ride in the back seat because it’s safer there.

A REAR-FACING CAR SEAT is the best seat for your young child

to use. It has a harness and in a crash, cradles and moves with your child to reduce the stress to the child’s fragile neck and spinal cord.

A FORWARD-FACING CAR SEAT has a harness and tether that limits

your child’s forward movement during a crash.

A BOOSTER SEAT positions the seat belt so that it fi ts properly over

the stronger parts of your child’s body.

A SEAT BELT should lie across the upper thighs and be snug

across the shoulder and chest to restrain the child safely in a crash. It should not rest on the stomach area or across the neck.

12 Babies of 2010 Keepsake Edition

When a baby is being welcomed into the home where a pet is present, individuals may have to make some changes to ensure the introduction and subsequent living arrangements go smoothly. Even the best-behaved pet may feel anxious around a new family member. Babies and animals have similar needs. Each relies on a parent to provide basic essentials: food, shelter and affection. Pets that are already established in a home may feel jealousy or confusion when a baby arrives. A child can throw schedules out of the window and contribute to a bit of chaos until a routine is established. Animals who are used to a certain way of life might be upset by the changes. Then again, there are some pets that simply go with the flow. To be a responsible pet parent and par-ent to an infant, there are certain things to do to ease the transition at home. Here are some things to consider.

Before the baby comes home• Make sure the pet is up-to-date will all vaccinations and gets a clean bill of health from the veterinarian.• Gradually introduce the pet to the smells and sounds that will be the baby’s world. Have the pet go into the nursery and see the new furniture and toys. Let the cat or dog sniff at the baby’s clothing.• Practice devoting attention to a doll and cuddling with it. This will acclimate the pet to seeing its owner doting affection on someone else.

• Invite friends or family over who have a young child. Observe how the pet reacts around the youngster.• Start correcting behaviors that should be changed now so the pet won’t associate them with the baby. For example, have the pet stop sleeping on the sofa.• Stock up on food, litter and other pet essentials so that the supply will be full when the baby comes and time for shop-ping is hard to come by.• Make arrangements for care of the pet for a few days during the hospital stay.

When the baby is here• Send home a piece of clothing that the baby has worn to acclimate the dog or cat to the smell.• If the pet is very affectionate toward Mom, have someone else carry the infant into the house so Mom can greet the pet.• Gradually introduce a leashed pet to the baby using a lot of praise.• Check to see if the pet shows any behav-ioral issues, such as chewing, scratching or guarding food and toys. This could prove problematic when the baby is crawling.• Never leave the baby alone with the pet. Again, even a well-behaved pet may lash out if he or she feels threatened.• Teach the child the proper way to inter-act with the pet. ------AllAboutPetsMicroSite pets family/par-enting children/teens safety/security

14 Babies of 2010 Keepsake Edition

Bathing children can be back-breaking work and potentially dangerous in adult-sized bathtubs. Innovators have created a number of small, plastic kids’ tubs that can be placed inside of the larger tub, but these can still be cumbersome and danger-ous. Safety Tubs®, a company known for its walk-in bathtubs for handicapped and special-needs bathers, offers a tub that is sure to please children and adults alike. The Consumer Product Safety Com-mission reports that about 110 children under 5 drown in common products in and around the home each year. These products include bathtubs, hot tubs, spas, buckets, and other containers. Bathtub drownings exceed the other in-home drownings. Of these drownings, more than half involve a child younger than 12 months.

Many parents look for solutions that provide a safe and convenient bathing ex-perience for children. Traditional chil-dren’s tubs are generally a small plastic basin that is put inside of the adult tub or a kitchen sink, then filled with water. Other kids’ bathing products are seats that suction-cup to the adult tub, which is then filled with water. In each scenario, the ability to slip or slide under the water is present. What’s more, parents must stoop over the side of the tub to clean their children. This can be inconvenient and painful. Safety Tubs® has created a product that transforms an ordinary bathtub into a safe, fun and water efficient unit. The product is also environmentally friendly -- using less water than adult tubs. Safety Tubs for kids is a solution for bathing any small child,

from infant all the way up to 70 pounds. The unit is easily installed over existing tubs and can be quickly removed when no longer needed. The tub gives parents the freedom to bathe their children in comfort, while eliminating com-mon bathroom hazards such as slips and falls, as well as injuries to parents caused by stooping and lifting over a traditional 60-inch bathtub.

Constructed of durable and easy to maintain cast acrylic, the new Safety Tubs® for kids offers designs for both boys and girls. The unit comes complete with strong powder-coated steel frame that resists rust and corrosion, padded anchors to protect the existing tub, and a chrome hand shower with integral on/off switch that ties into existing plumbing. Accessories such as a changing pad and infant tub seat are available to comple-ment the tub. In addition to using innovative products to make bathing safer for children, there are other precautions parents can take to prevent injury.• Never leave children alone near any amount of water. It only takes a small amount of water -- even a few inches -- to drown a child.• Always keep a baby within arms reach in the bathtub.• Do not leave the bathroom for any rea-son while a child is in the tub. If you must leave, take the baby or toddler with you.

• Baby seats are not safety devices. They should not replace constant adult supervi-sion.• Learn CPR to assist a child should he or she breathe in water. ------home-misc home-interior beauty/groom-ing children/teens safety/security con-sumer tips

Make bath time safer and more funThe ergonomic design places the child at a comfortable height to eliminate the need to stoop over when bathing a child.
