Tips and Care InstructionsCare of your nappies

To Launder:

∗ If you have bought a lot of nappies, I recommend that you only wash one or two to try to be-gin with, as washed nappies cannot be exchanged unless faulty.

∗ Fold over any velcro tabs to prevent snagging.

∗ Soaking nappies is not absolutely essential since most of the soiling will have been

removed on the liner. No Soaking Method:

∗ Store wet nappies in a lidded bucket.

∗ Add the quantity of nappy sanitizer recommended on the packet in addition to non-biologicallaundry detergent in the washing machine.

∗ If you don’t want to soak , then put nappies through a rinse or pre-wash cycle before washing.Please be aware of the temperature of your pre-wash cycle; some are too hot for wraps.

∗ Check the care instructions on your nappies for the best wash temperature

Soaking Method:

∗ Soak nappies in a solution of nappy sanitiser according to the instructions on the packet

∗ or ½ fill your bucket with water and add 5 drops of tea tree oil OR 2-3 tablespoons of distilledwhite vinegar OR 1 tablespoon of sodium bicarbonate.

∗ Check the care instructions on your nappies for the best soaking solution for your product.

∗ Do not soak nappy covers.

∗ Soak overnight or for a minimum of two hours.

∗ Nappies must be pre-washed before use. This causes the fibres to ‘fluff up’ ready to absorbmoisture. Pre-wash at the appropriate temperature, with a non-biological laundry detergent.The more the nappy is washed the more absorbent it will become.

∗ Use a non-biological detergent, to help prevent skin irritation

∗ Do not use chlorine bleach or Borax on your nappies. If necessary remove stains with a spottreatment of a stain remover, although do test a patch section of the product first.

∗ It is advisable not to use fabric conditioner or 2 in 1 detergents containing fabric softeners asthis can reduce the absorbency of your nappies. In hard water areas, 1 tbsp. of white vinegar inthe last rinse will help to soften nap- pies.

∗ Plastic covers can be wiped clean on the inside and do not have to be washed with every nappychange. Check the care instructions for your brand of nappy covers. Wraps should be washed

after 4-5 nappy changes, unless very wet or soiled.

∗ Washable liners can be sluiced in the toilet prior to storage to remove faeces.

∗ Nappies can be line dried, aired indoors or tumble dried on a low setting. Check the careinstructions for your nappies prior to tumble drying

∗ Do not tumble dry wraps or all-in-one nappies, or place them directly on a heat source—thisinterferes with their waterproof properties.

∗ In most cases a straight forward 60° C wash is sufficient to get rid of any bacteria, and leave yourwashing machine free of contamination.

Useful Tips∗ Aim to change the nappy every three to four hours. This is the ideal timing for most babies,

although a poo will need to be changed immediately, as it is the presence of poo which causes

nappy rash.

∗ Nappy rash is caused by bacteria from faeces coming into contact with stale urine and producingammonia which can irritate the skin.

∗ When you put the nappy on, check around the baby’s legs and waist to ensure that there isabsolutely no nappy stick- ing out of the wrap, otherwise you will get leaks and wicking ontoclothing.

∗ Do be careful when taking the nappy off if you are breastfeeding: the poo will be fairly runny andjust the act of remov- ing the nappy can be enough to make it run onto the wrap. Leaks do happenwith tiny babies—whatever type of nappy is used.

∗ You may find it helpful to lay your nappy out (with booster/liner as required) in the wrap first,so alternate between wraps at each change.

∗ If you get a leak, consider: was some part of the nappy protruding from the wrap and coming intocontact with baby’s clothing; was there sufficient absorbency for the amount of urine/length oftime the nappy was on—if not, add booster layers; if your baby is a boy did you make sure his peniswas pointing downwards within the nappy.

∗ Storing your nappies in the airing cupboard will ensure that they are completely dry and meanthat they are kept warm and soft for baby’s bottom.

∗ Drying in the sun bleaches and sterilizes nappies and wraps—do this as often as the weather permits.

∗ Keep a pair of rubber gloves specifically for dealing with soiled nappies to avoid contaminating with faecal bacteria.

∗ A wooden spoon is useful to push the nappies into the soaking solution.

∗ Sudocream is great for keeping babies bottoms free from any soreness. I put sudocream on mybaby’s bottom at every change.
