Chapter 1:

38th ParallelCommodore Yong-Jo sat in his shock chair,

apparently without a care in the world. Of course hewas surrounded by his bridge crew at the momentand the first rule of command was to always appearcalm and in control. At the moment Yong-Jo wasfinding it difficult to maintain his calm facade giventhe contents of the flash intelligence report he hadjust received. The idea that the Earth Alliance wouldfinally act militarily against Korea and the otherindependent nations of Earth was almost impossibleto believe. And yet the new Clark Administration hadbeen making sweeping changes within the commandstaff of EarthForce over the last several months andwas continuing to press its Earth first policies.

If Korean Intelligence was on the mark, evennow, there was an EarthForce strike groupshadowing his squadron, waiting for time to run outon the ultimatum from the Earth Alliance for Korea tostand down its forces. Appended to the intelligencereport was a new set of orders, giving Yong-Jo theright to exercise independent command and, ifnecessary, the option to escape to neutral space. Tothat end, he ordered the jump engine on hisOryonggeo-class Heavy Cruiser, the , tobe brought out of cold shutdown and spooled up. HisCommander Air Group (CAG) had ordered the

squadron of Valkyrie fighters to be launchedand the rest of the task force was arming weapons. All Yong-Jo needed was a little time and he and hiscommand would be safely hidden in hyperspace towait out the crisis whatever it was. CommodoreYong-Jo hated waiting.

An insistent chime ended the waiting momentslater. Lieutenant Jung-Oh, at the sensor station, calmly reported

even as thetactical plot on the main view screen was updated.Commodore Yong-Jo ordered the fleet to combatspeed and began to reorient his squadron towardsthe jump point and the potential threat. The CAG alsowasted no time ordering his fighters to combatspeed. Both he and Commodore Yong-Jo couldapologize later if they were over-reacting.

In the midst of the sudden flurry of activity on thebridge, Lieutenant Jung-Oh reported that thecontacts were an EarthForce squadron consisting ofan Omega Destroyer, an Oracle Scout Cruiser and apair of Tethys Police Cutters. Communications OfficerIn-Tak had already transmitted a standard greeting

KNS Daegu

Daegu's

“Jump point forming! Multiplecontacts exiting at point 4 by 3 carom 8,”

and was still waiting for a response. Instead, theOmega was launching fighters, which included a fullsquadron of the next generation of Starfury fighters, the Thunderbolt.

Everything about the EarthForce squadron'sactions screamed aggression, but as yet the Allianceships had remained strangely quiet. Was a standdown order coming? Would they simply open fire?Commodore Yong-Jo found himself in a bit of aquandary. Every moment that passed reduced therange between the two squadrons, and reduced hisoptions should combat ensue. Yet every passingmoment meant his jump engine was that muchcloser to activating, rendering any potentialaggressions mute. In the background he could hearhis gunners prioritizing targets, and his CAGtargeting the Thunderbolts and making the obviouspoint that they should make every shot count.

On the tactical board, the Janggeom-class PatrolCutters were launching their assault shuttles, withorders to engage the two Tethys. They were a goodsquadron and knew the drill, leaving CommodoreYong-Jo to ponder some move that might somehowprevent this disaster. Talking was probably hopeless, but it might buy enough time to get the hell out ofthere. “Open channels with that Omega. And don'ttake no for an answer.” Lieutenant In-Tak hunchedover his console and began the likely impossible taskof trying to get someone on the Omega to respond.

Suddenly, Lieutenant Jung-Oh broke the standoff,“Weapon Lock…Energy Spike…INCOMING FIRE!”The main screen polarized as the Omega opened fire.Heavy lasers slashed out towards his ship, and the

rocked with the impact of a least one hit. Atthe same time, heavy pulse cannon fire was sleetingover the , one of his Goguryeo-classArmored Cruisers. Commodore Yong-Jo realized thata lot of pulses were finding the mark and brieflywondered at the accuracy before realizing that theOracle Scout Cruiser was probably providingtargeting aid. Jung-Oh barely had time to order hisown squadron to return fire, when a medium laserfrom the Oracle swept across the , rocking theship yet again and blowing out the main bridge viewscreen.

Using his command chair view screen, Yong-Jowatched as his squadron opened fire. A barrage ofmedium lasers, punctuated by heavy laser, swept out from his fleet, targeting the leading TethysPolice Cutters, though the respondedwith only one of its two. In an instant, one of theTethys was reduced to a crippled hulk while thesecond was only damaged. Assault shuttles from the

Janggeom swarmed in hoping to take advantage ofthe damage. In the void between the two fleets hisdozen Valkyrie fighters slammed into the two dozenapproaching EarthForce fighters. A series of flashesspread through the ranked fighters, and when theexplosions cleared, eight Thunderbolts and all of hisValkyrie’s were simply gone.

The EarthForce fighters, undaunted by theirlosses, continued to close with the Korean fleet.Missiles from the remaining Thunderbolts arrivedfirst, all directed at the . Many wereintercepted by particle beam fire, but just as manyhit. heavy laser was lost in a simultaneousimpact of two missiles, as was a laser/pulse array, previously damaged by laser fire from the Omega. Aretro thrust was also a tattered wreck, but then thefleet was hardly going to slow down.

Commodore Yong-Jo watched with calmappreciation as the EarthForce fighter group chargeddown the throat of his squadron, ignoring the otherships to reach his . Despite being chopped toribbons by the combined fire of particle beams andpulse mode laser/pulse arrays, a flight of Starfury’sstill managed to win through and pile additional hurton his ship. Fortunately, the all important jumpengine remained undamaged, and the rear firinglaser/pulse arrays of the made them pay asthe swept past.

Had this been a war game, Commodore Yong-Jowould have been smiling. His force had just taken outa large EarthForce fighter group, crippled a Tethysand damaged a second at the cost of his fightersquadron, a severely damaged Goguryeo and aheavily damaged Oryonggeo. Unfortunately, this wasall too real and real people were dying at the hands oftheir own kind. Still, there remained a grimsatisfaction for a job well done.

And then exploded. Yong-Jomentally cursed as he realized that he had lost hisbattlefield awareness during the EarthForce fighterstrike. The Omega's captain, whoever he was, hadaggressively continued to charge his vessel at theKorean squadron, rightly assuming that the Koreanforce would become over concentrated on theattacking fighters. The Omega’s heavy pulsecannons had just finished off the , even asmassed particle fire chewed up the Janggeom-classPatrol Cutter and its aft firing heavy lasercannons savaged her sister, the .

Fortunately, Lieutenant Jung-Oh had not beencaught as unaware and thanks to his efforts with the

counter measures, only one of the Omega'stwo forward heavy lasers hit, despite the short range.

And though it proceeded to removeremaining forwards heavy weapons, the critical jumpengine remained safe. But in that moment, theOmega destroyer had managed to single handedlyknock out three ships. The trailing Oracle proceededto add insult to injury by pouring fire into the alreadydamaged .

Commodore Yong-Jo belatedly ordered hissquadron to

concentrate all available fire on theOmega. But standard particle beams and mediumpulse cannons, in the face of the Omega's bulk, itsinterceptors and that damn energy web were just notmaking a big enough impression fast enough. Thesquadron simply didn't have the fire power left tohandle the Omega. It was time to go.

Unfortunately, the jump engine needed just a fewmore moments and simply didn't have it.The Omega was about to centerline the andhit her with massed particle beam fire and his cruiserwas simply too beat up for something critical not tobe hit.

Suddenly, all three Janggeom cutters launchedtheir breaching pods at the Omega. Thanks to theOmega's charge the range was close and thebreaching pods would be there in an instant. TheOmega’s captain now found himself in a bind. Fire atthe and MAYBE take out her jump engine, orfire on the approaching breaching pods, which wereabout to attach themselves to his ship. If all sixbreaching pods attached, their combined marineforce MIGHT be able to take his ship.

Particle beam fire from the Omega was redirectedat the breaching pods and four of the six wereblasted out of existence. Yet as they died, the jumpengine on finally completed charging.Commodore Yong-Jo ordered an immediate jumpand along with only two other ships from hissquadron jumped away.

In the safety of hyperspace, Commodore Yong-Joconsidered his options. None were particularlyappealing. His country was likely lost. Yong-Jo waspragmatic enough to recognize that Korea would notbe able to hold its own again the entirety of the EarthAlliance. But the was not the only jumpcapable ship in the Korean Navy, so other elements ofthe fleet may have escaped. But where to meet?Where to regroup? Where could he get the help heneeded to take back his home, his country? Therewas really only one choice. “Navigator! Plot a coursefor Babylon 5.”

Chapter 2:Comes the Alliance

Foundation of a Navy

The formation of the Earth Alliance began in thelate 2070’s and while many nations embraced theformation of this organization, several questionedthe potential for inequality in such an organization.Over the next decade, most nations would choose tojoin, seeking economic aid for their depressedeconomies. Despite persistent pressure from Alliancemembers, a few nations would still chose to go italone and remain fully independent.

One of these independent nations was theRepublic of Korea. At the time of the formation of theEarth Alliance, Korea was already an economicpowerhouse in the pan-asian region. Moreimportantly, Korea’s economy had managed to avoidthe depression that had gripped most of the world.Economic aid from the Earth Alliance was thereforeof little incentive, and Korea recognized that shouldthey become a member, they would likely berelegated to secondary position behind the largermore traditional powers. Better to remainindependent and in charge of their own destiny.

Even as the Earth Alliance was forming, thepeople of Earth finally began to exploit the outerasteroid fields of the solar system. This exploitationwas lead by a combination of corporations, countries, and even wealthy individuals. Korea was an earlyproponent for this push, but was initially hamstrungby a weak space program. Their attempts to teamwith other nations proved fruitless due to EarthAlliance directed embargoes. Korea was thus forcedto go it alone, and would have to develop its ownindigenous space program. They approached theproblem with the same energy they applied to all oftheir endeavors and would quickly become an activeplayer in the asteroid fields.

Unfortunately, like past gold rushes, the newfrontier that was the asteroid fields quickly becamehome for a less savory element, namely pirates. Anumber of the more aggressive pirate groups weresuspected of being backed by various independentEarth governments. The Republic of Korea wasusually at the forefront of these various pirateallegations. The Koreans argued that they were asheavily invested in the asteroid fields as anyone andhad suffered their own share of pirate predation. They countered with the argument that this was justanother form of pressure by the Earth Alliance.Despite their protestations, the rumors persisted,

though no credible evidence was ever produced toallow for an official Earth Alliance response.

With only remote governmental authority in theregion, a number of mining organizations wereforced to combine into a protective union. This union, later known as the Belt Alliance, along with the largermining groups and the various national interestsbegan to arm their ships, militarizing the asteroidfields. Korea responded by forming its own spacenavy, whose publicly stated mission would be tocontrol the aerospace over the peninsula and protectKorea’s asteroid field interests.

Even as they deployed their new fleet, theKoreans watched with interest as the Belt Alliancedeployed its Alpha-series fighter in Y2123. Despitethe Alpha’s innovative appeal, the Koreans weren’tprepared to take the fighter plunge, feeling that thespace only Alpha was too limited. The Koreans feltthey needed an atmospheric capable fighter, whichcould serve double duty within Korean airspace aswell as outer space. Realizing that they lackedsufficient aerospace fighter development skills, theKoreans discretely offered funding aid to the BeltAlliance to support the development of itsatmospheric capable Beta-series fighter. Officiallyreleased for sales in Y2126, the Korean navy was firstin line, and purchased enough fighters to deployseveral squadrons.

To that end, Korea began construction on twoclasses of hulls. The larger of the two was theYi Sun-shin class corvette, whose stated role wouldbe to act as the main combat element of the fleet. The Yi Sun-shin's stable mate was the Kobuksonclass patrol ship. This class was intended to beKorea’s contribution to Quarantine Command, a jointoperation by all Earth nations, in or out of the EarthAlliance, to provide customs, search and rescue andanti-smuggling services for the entire planet.Unsurprisingly, the primary mission zone for theKobukson would be over Korean space. Both classesentered service in Y2120.

The simultaneous introduction of both classescame as a great surprise to the leadership of theEarth Alliance. Earth Alliance Intelligence had beenaware of ongoing design activities within theRepublic, as well as heightened industrial activity, butthey failed to understand the scope of Korea's goals.Observation of these ships in service convinced EarthAlliance leadership that neither ship class wasequipped with cutting edge technology, but theirmere presence would become a continuing thorn inthe side of Earth Alliance for decades to come.

Enter EarthForce

The Centauri

In order to counter the escalating piracy andprovide a means of combating independent nationalforces, Earth Alliance formed EarthForce in Y2130.Initially, EarthForce was assembled from thepreexisting forces of the member nations of the EarthAlliance. This force was then supplemented with newEarth Alliance funded equipment and ships.

After its creation, the Earth Alliance Senatewasted no time in sending EarthForce into the midstof the asteroid fields with orders to establish law andorder. While there were some skirmishes betweenEarthForce and the Belt Alliance, the Koreansremained steadfastly uninvolved, though thereremained the persistent rumor that the Republic wascontinuing to support some of the larger piratingconsortiums. Once again, no proof was ever found tosubstantiate this rumor, because, simply put, noneexisted. The Koreans had wisely decided not tosupport these large pirate organizations. Instead, they supported a number of independent andentrepreneurial individuals through a series of falsefronts and cut outs.

The wisdom of their decision was proven by theaggressive approach taken by the Earth Alliance inregards to Raiders and the other large space fairingorganizations, like the Belt Alliance. The organizedpirates were quickly broken, while the Belt Alliancefound itself legally limited to small fighters, patrolcraft and convoy escorts. By virtue of its discretion,Korea's navy remained largely unchecked.

Politically handcuffed to small ships and fighters, the Belt Alliance intensified its efforts towardsfielding its next generation fighter, the Gamma-series. Interestingly, the new fighter was deployedsimultaneously with the Republic of China in Y2135.In response, the Korean navy once again lined upwith the other organizations to order the new fighteronly to be denied a sale. Unbeknownst to theKoreans, the Republic of China had funded asignificant portion of the Gamma's development andprocured the manufacturing rights as well. Chinatook advantage of the opportunity for a little regionalposturing, and refused to allow the Belt Alliance tosell Gamma fighters to the Koreans. Interestingly,China itself would later sell the new fighter to theRepublic of South Africa.

During the 1930's and 40’s Korea, in a show ofglobal unity, supported a number of Earth Alliancesponsored missions to nearby stars. Koreanscientists and investors, teamed with other nations

and helped to settle Mars. Yet despite thesesuccesses, the illusion of unity was just that. TheEarth Alliance was fracturing, with rising tensionsbetween nations and factions seen as inevitablyleading to civil war. A military build-up by EarthForceall but forced Korea to increase funding of its ownmilitary. Korean Intelligence once again began toaggressively fund Raider activities to draw offEarthForce attention and forces, while punishingthose nations perceived as a direct threat. TheKoreans, along with the world, were preparing forthe next world war.

Then, in Y2156, the Centauri Republic made FirstContact. They were far more advanced, anddemonstrably more powerful, than the combinedforces of Earth. The war that was so close to eruptingwas summarily forgotten and a new sense of globalunity was born. Despite the new reality of a universefilled with aggressive species, Korea would continueto resist the renewed invitations to join the EarthAlliance. They would continue to go their own way.

This was not to say that Korea wasn't willing tocontinue working with the other organizations. Whenthe Earth Alliance founded the first extra-solar colonyat Proxima III in Y2164, Korea was all too willing tohelp with the expenses by provided much neededfunding for colonization and industrialization of thesystem. In fact, Proxima Centauri would turn out tobe rich in Quantium 40, vital in the construction ofjump gates and engines, and Korea would reap asizable profit for its efforts. Korea would alsocontinue to work with the Belt Alliance, aiding itsexpansion into the new extra-solar colonies of theEarth Alliance, and supporting its attempts to breakinto alien markets.

Flush with its extra-solar profits, the Korean Navybegan a fleet wide upgrade that updated both theYi Sun-shin class (Y2164) and the Kobukson class(Y2165) vessels, replacing their light blast cannonswith the new light particle beams.

Unsurprisingly, the Koreans also investigated thepossibility of purchasing the new Delta-series fighterthat was deployed in Y2158. However, like theGamma-series, the Delta-series was again theproduct of a joint development, only this timebetween the Belt Alliance and the Earth Alliance. Andwhile the answer was not a flat out no, the EarthAlliance wanted to add a number of conditions to anysale. Conditions that Koreans felt they could notaccept, forcing them to continue soldiering on withtheir now dated Beta-series fighter force.

Still, it was surprising that the Koreans chose notto push harder during the fighter negotiations. In

addition, the Earth Alliance intelligence communitynoted that the pace of the Korean fleet update wasmuch slower than was initially expected. Followupcovert investigations determined that money wasbeing channeled into a number of other Korean navalprojects, though the specifics of these projectsremained unclear.

There were also indications of some sort ofdialogue ongoing between Korea and the CentauriRepublic. This generated a great deal of concernwithin Earth Alliance Senate. However, they lackedthe ability to do anything about it. One of the nearterm results of these conversations was the deliveryof a number of

Kobukson classpatrol vessels.

Then in early Y2165 one of the Korean projectwas revealed when a brand new Yi Sun-shin classcorvette was boosted into orbit. Surprisingly, uponreaching orbit, Korean engineers proceeded to cutthe ship in half. Several months later, a new, neverbefore seen hull section was launched, and this newsection installed between the two halves of theYi Sun-shin. Thanks to some architectural aid fromthe Centauri, Korea's first capital class vessel wasplaced into service in Y2166. The new cruiser wasdesignated the Yi Song-gye class.

Centauri Lakrit class assault shuttles, which were then deployed on the

A year later, yet another project was revealed withthe launch of entirely new platform. That platformwas a missile armed defensive satellite designatedthe Nopunde-A (Y2167), which would provideplanetary, or rather, peninsular defense. Thistrumped the deployment of the Earth Alliancedefense grid satellites by a full two years. The laserarmed Nopunde-B would appear the following yeargiving Korea its own flexible, though localized, defense grid.

These rapid additions to the Korean fleet wereviewed with a certain amount of anxiety by the EarthAlliance leadership. The significant technological andarchitectural leads once held by the Earth Alliancemember nations were obviously eroding away at anunsettling pace. The flexibility and drive displayed bythe Korean nation had was once again been underappreciated and the Alliance needed to act.

In Y2168, the Earth Alliance successfully tested anew technology dubbed the interceptor/eweb. Thistechnology would not be shared with the Koreans norany other independent organization within the EarthAlliance sphere of influence. The new interceptorkicked off a large scale naval building program, code

Brush Wars

named Aegis. It started with a redesign of the fleet touse the new technology. It also introduced the Ariesheavy fighter, developed solely by the Earth Allianceunder a program known as Star Fury. The large andvery capable Avenger-class heavy carrier wasintroduced simultaneously, and would allowEarthForce to conduct fighter operations far fromEarth Alliance territory.

The new technology and ships would finally takeEarthForce to the forefront of human spacetechnology, much to the appreciation of the EarthAlliance Senate who chaffed at the strength of theindependent nations. The Earth Alliance alsoannounced that it would finally provide a planetarydefense grid for the entirety of Earth with its ownorbital satellites, two years after the installation ofKorea’s own local defense grid. A fact the Koreanstook great pride in recognizing.

The strengthening of EarthForce was well timed,as these new and updated units would quickly seecombat during the brief Koulani attack, the Ch'Lonasraids and in a series of skirmishes with the CentauriRepublic. While Korean forces were not involved inany of these conflicts, their Admiralty andIntelligence communities carefully analyzed theresulting combat data. They realized, much likeEarthForce, that their technology remained inferiorto many of the other races, though the gap hadnarrowed considerably. In response, Korea institutedanother set of fleet-wide upgrades in 2180’s, whichintroduced the Class-SO missile rack and thestandard particle beam.

In Y2192, a joint Earth Alliance/Belt Allianceproject successfully produced the Delta-V, aremarkably successful aerospace fighter.Unbeknownst to the Earth Alliance, a sizableinvestment of capital had been provided by theKoreans to the Belt Alliance in support if this project. For their investment, the Koreans received acomplete set of design plans for the Delta-V andmanufacturing rights. Unbeknownst to the BeltAlliance or anyone else for the matter, the Koreanshad already established a number of sales for theplans with other less reputable organizations, and infairly short order had recovered their originalinvestment several times over.

The result of these sales meant that a number ofthe more capable Raider groups began operatingbrand new Delta-V’s of their own. The Belt Alliancesaw the writing on the wall and immediatelyconfronted the Koreans, who publicly claimedinnocence, but offered a private settlement for their“indiscretions.” While frustrated by the Korean’s lack

of forthrightness, the Belt Alliance recognized thepotential revenue opportunities and made a numberof discrete sales of their own. Soon after, EarthAlliance officials were shocked to discover that aliengovernments were obtaining the Delta-V as well.

The Korean navy reaped the rewards with thecomplete replacement of their existing, and nowaged, Beta fighter force with Delta-V fighters inY2195. The added funds also allowed the Koreans tobuy the basic hull of an Orion-Beta Space Station.Completed with Korean technology in Y2199, theGojoseon class station would facilitate a Koreannaval presence in Earth orbit for decades to come.

In Y2198, the Earth Alliance decided to shut downthe old Centauri built jump gate orbiting Earth andreplace it with a human built gate near the Io base atJupiter. The idea was to keep potential enemies, whowould be using the gate beacon system to navigate, out of Earth orbit long enough to allow a reaction byEarthForce. It had the added advantage of replacingthe Centauri toll for gate use with an Earth Allianceequivalent. Naturally, Earth Alliance favored nationsand organizations would receive priority and tolldiscounts at the new gate. Less favored nations, likethe Koreans, would….not.

This became painfully obvious when risingtensions with the Narn Regime finally flared intoopen combat in Y2219. In response to the Narnaggression, access to the Io gate by non-EarthAlliance members was limited in order to prioritizesupport for the growing conflict. When the Narninvaded Epsilon Indi V, access to the gate was all butdenied to any non-EarthForce units. Ultimately, theNarn forces were repelled with relative ease, but forKorea, the reality that the Earth Alliance couldeffectively cut them off from the interstellarcommunity was a painful and lasting message.

What was needed was a jump capable vessel, specifically owned and operated by Korea.Unfortunately, the Earth Alliance was unwilling toprovide any assistance towards the development of aKorean built jump engine. Initial projections, basedon Korean-only technical resources, determined thata jump engine could be as far as a century away.Without some external aid, Korean access tohyperspace, and the universe at large, would remaintied to the whims of the Earth Alliance.

Fortunately, the Centauri Republic, already willingto sell the technology to the Earth Alliance, wasequally willing to work with their good and dearfriends, the independent nation of Korea. The Earth

Interstellar

Alliance’s first indication that Korea was about tobecome an interstellar organization began when anew Yi Sun-shin hull climbed into orbit, rendezvoused with the Korean station, and was cut inhalf. While hardly unusual, the hull plug that followedwas not the typical Yi Song-gye class hull piece.EarthForce Intelligence postulated a new variant ofthe cruiser hull, but when a Centauri freighterappeared soon after, requesting a rendezvous withthe Korean station, interests were peaked. A largetail structure was removed from the freighter andattached to the new hull. The tail was easily identifiedby EarthForce as the typical housing for a Centaurijump engine. Completed in Y2218, the Haemosuclass Jump Cruiser gave Korea access to hyperspaceon their own terms and gave EarthForce a brand newheadache.

The Haemosu class finally broke the back of eventhe most Earth Alliance-first member of the Senate.Despite furious cries for sanctions and embargoes tobe levied against Korea, there simply wasn't anythingthe Senate could do short of declaring war. Korea hadthe necessary infrastructure to support spaceoperations, and possessed interstellar friends in theform of the Belt Alliance and the Centauri Republic. Itsimply was not possible to force Korea to join theEarth Alliance and Korea was going to retain itsinterstellar membership despite the best efforts ofthe Senate and the Earth Alliance.

The only remaining option was to finally lift all theexisting embargoes and take advantage of Korea'scredits. With the technology embargo removed, theKorean navy could now update the fleet to the latestadvances. To that end, Korean entered into a numberof technology sharing contracts with various EarthAlliance member nations. These contracts wouldupgrade the Yi Sun-shin to cutting edge technologyin Y2223. A year later, in an audacious move, theKorean's offered to buy an old Avenger-Beta HeavyCarrier hull that was designated for retirement fromEarthForce service. Amazingly, the Earth AllianceSenate allowed the sale to go through amidst rumorsof bribes and favors by the Koreans. Stripped of allproprietary technology and the jump engine, the hullwas then towed to the Korean space station where itwas outfitted with Korean technology and returnedto service in Y2226 as the Jang Bogo heavy carrier.

With near global unity, the nations of Earth werecontent to carve out their own sphere of knownspace without internal harassment and minimalintrigue. Unfortunately, this moment of peace would

not last long. The Dilgar were on the move.Korea and the Belt Alliance actually felt the impact

first, when their trade races were attacked by therampaging Dilgar. By the time the Earth Alliancechose to notice, the Dilgar were at war with severalimportant League nations, such as the Abbai andDrazi, and had conquered two others, the Alacan andBalosian.

The Earth Alliance responded with increasinglyaggressive warnings, and a general mobilization ofEarthForce. The major non-Earth Alliance Terrannations were asked to contribute forces to anexpeditionary force in a personal request from theEarth Alliance president. Korea responded with a taskforce of eight ships, a sizable percentage of the totalactive force, which included the one of kind JangBogo heavy carrier and one of the two Haemosuclass Jump Cruisers.

When the Dilgar invaded the bordering MarkabTheocracy, the forces of Earth sprang into high gear.Ships were ordered into motion, plans to intervene insupport of the Markab were issued and the Dilgarwere warned once again that this was their lastchance. Unfortunately, the Dilgar chose to treat thewarning as nothing more than an ongoing bluff andcontinued with their invasion. That was until EarthAlliance ships, along with the expeditionary force, showed up and opened fire. The Dilgar, taken bysurprise, fled with relatively few losses. They realizedthat a fight this far from their own main supplyfacilities was a bad idea, and withdrew to theirclosest bases.

The Earth Expeditionary fleet followed, forced topursue when their Markab allies refused to standdown and raced after the escaping Dilgar. Thesomewhat out of control chase kept the Dilgar ontheir collective heals, allowing for the relatively easyliberation of several League nations, which addedadditional forces to the Allied fleet. However, thepursuit also presented a number of logisticalproblems, especially for the non-Earth AllianceTerran nations. Korea, like the others, lacked even arudimentary supply force for their fleet. This forcedthem to rely on EarthForce for resupply, which wasalready overtaxed by their own needs and that of thenewly freed League units.

But by keeping the pressure on the Dilgar, theAllied forces prevented them from regaining theirbalance. The Dilgar would not be brought to adecisive battle until the Balos system, which hadbeen heavily reinforced and fortified by the Dilgar.Rather than attempt to batter through the defense inan all out frontal assault, a complicated plan was put

into place. The free Balosian forces and the Republicof South Africa forces, both of which operatedCentauri hulls, would be sent into Balosian space toshow greater strength than the Dilgar believed theBalosian Free Navy could muster. When Dilgar forceswere sent to crush this persistent annoyance, therest of the fleet would spring an ambush and defeatthem in detail. The combined Allied fleet would thenquickly regroup and assault the weakened Dilgarfleet at Balos directly.

The plan was overly complex, and unsurprisingly, failed in the face of the enemy. The Dilgar forceswere present in larger numbers and greater strengththan expected, and the operation to land forces onBalus was underway when the fleets engaged. TheBalosian and South American forces were mauled inthe ensuing action. The remaining non-Earth AllianceTerran forces were committed to the battle earlierthan was planned. As a result, these forces tookdisproportionately heavier losses than EarthForceforces, much of which had been held in reserve forthe strike on the main Dilgar fleet at Balus, causingmuch acrimony amongst the surviving non-EarthAlliance Terran forces.

The Allied fleet was forced to withdraw by thespirited Dilgar defense, leaving the assault echelonsof the liberation forces on Balus. A hasty follow-upattack was made to take the system before the Dilgarcould resume fortifications, but was repulsed.Against the desires of virtually everyone involved, the Allied fleet decided it was imperative to retakethe system at any cost, and the forces went in oncemore. The battle that followed broke the back of theDilgar navy, and came close to doing the same to theAllies. A new standard of ferocity was reached, withDilgar and Markab forces routinely ramming enemyunits when they could no longer effectively fight.

The battle for Balus essentially forced Korea outof the war. Of the eight ships committed, five weredestroyed, including the priceless Haemosu JumpCruiser. The rest were damaged to one degree oranother, with the Jang Bogo heavily so. Frustrated bythe apparent use of their forces to buffer EarthForceforces, Korea withdrew for the remainder of the war, though they chose not to voice their grievances.Korean leadership rightly ascertained that bykeeping their mouths shut, Korea would be allowedto reap the rewards of a victorious alliance.

Their prudence would result in a windfall oftechnology. At the conclusion of the Dilgar War,EarthForce was able to use Dilgar bolter and pulsartechnologies to develop true pulse weapon

technology. This new series of weapons and much ofthe other captured Dilgar technology was sharedamongst the Allies, including the Koreans.

apparently being embroiled in yet another war, was

Between Y2241 and Y2246, the Korean navywould conduct a massive fleet upgrade program, involving every fleet unit in service. Interestingly, very little of the fleet upgrade would include pulseweapons, despite its overwhelming popularity acrossthe galaxy. Only a variant of the Yi Sun-shin wouldsee a complete conversion to pulse technology. Theremainder of the fleet would see refits dedicated toimproved armor, sensors and the addition of the fastfiring Class-R missile rack.

Despite the planned upgrades, Korean leadersrecognized that the fleet was still a victim to lowendurance and short range. To combat this in thenear term, several freighter hulls were purchased toserve as the nucleus of a fleet train, but the fundswere not available to allow specialized hulls to beobtained for this purpose, yet.

Part of the hold up was yet another wholesalereplacement of the fighter force. Following the war,EarthForce was forced to develop a new atmosphericcapable fighter to replace the Delta-V's that had beenslaughtered by the Dilgar Thoruns. The result wasthe Valkyrie Medium Fighter. While not particularlypopular within EarthForce, the Koreans saw theValkyrie as the perfect fit for their needs. Better still, the Earth Alliance was only to happy to sell theKoreans as many as they wanted, even allowingthem to begin licensed production. Overnight theentire Korean Delta-V force was replaced by theValkyrie, though were the old Delta-V's ended up wasnever publicly stated.

Following the defeat of the Dilgar, the EarthAlliance enjoyed great influence with the League, and by virtue of its undamaged economy was wellpositioned to help the galaxy rebuild. Koreabenefitted from the economic boon and aliengoodwill as much as, if not more than, the EarthAlliance. They parlayed their original alien contactsand the general galaxy opinion that “Earth Alliance”meant all humans to stay involved in the peacefulexpansion that followed. Korea, like all of Earth, experienced a golden era of public contentment.Unfortunately, all good things must have an end.

Korea, along with most of the nations of Earth, discovered that they were at war when the EarthAlliance announced the loss of the Vega system to arelative unknown race called the Minbari.

particular war, so let them deal with it. Koreawould simply stay out of the way and to that endrecalled her forces to Earth.

Unfortunately, even as Korea’s forces returned toEarth, the reality of just how powerful the Minbariwere was becoming apparent, as addition EarthAlliance systems fell. Alliance attempts to establish adialogue, much less a peace offerings, werecompletely ignored. The Minbari just kept coming.

The League of Non-Aligned Worlds, along withthe Centauri, offered sympathy, but would donothing else, for fear of the Minbari. Surprisingly, itwould fall to the Narn to sell weapons and technologyto the beleaguered Earth Alliance.

By now it was apparent that the Minbari wouldnot be differentiating between the Earth Alliance andKorea. All humans would die. Now resigned to thewar, Korea reach out to her more clandestine Raiderfriends. They provided some valuable intelligence asto Minbari activities in and around Earth Alliancespace, but the total military aid they could providewas minimal.

As the war progressed, the Korean navy’sformerly slow moving refit program became amaximum priority. However, there was only so muchshipyard space, and a re-prioritization of the refitprogram was thus required. By then its was painfullyobvious that the Minbari could not be stopped, sohome defense was placed above all else. Thepeninsula defense grid was upgraded and vastlyenhanced with the new Nopunde-A and B defensesatellites, which introduced Korea's Laser/PulseArray technology. EarthForce was somewhatsurprised at the appearance of this piece of advancedtechnology, but could hardly complain given thecircumstances. In fact, the situation was deemed sobad that EarthForce even allowed the fitting of thenew Heavy Laser Cannon to the Haemosu class JumpCruisers, in order to field as many of the newweapons as quickly as possible.

When the Minbari finally found the Sol system, they found the fleets of man massed to defendhumanity's home. In a move of desperation, thenations that were not part of the Earth Alliance wereconvinced, for their own survival, to send largeportions of their fleets to defend Io. EarthForceIntelligence reasoned that Io would be an earlyMinbari target due to the Jump Gate, and it washoped that the new ship classes would convince theMinbari that humanity had new allies.

Intelligence was correct in that Io was hit first, butthey were sadly mistaken in their belief that theMinbari might pause before opening fire. The IoDefense Force was crushed, with only 2 Korean shipssurviving the initial clash. The survivors were ignoredby the Minbari fleet as it sped towards to Earth, andthe Line. The Battle of the Line saw the bulk of theremaining human combat forces massed to buy timefor the final evacuation of a few more refugees. TheMinbari were leisurely demolishing the last hope ofmankind, when suddenly and for no known reason, they surrendered. The full story as to why has neverbeen released.

After the devastation of the Earth-Minbari War,the Korean navy, like must of humanity’s navies, wasforced to rebuild. The entire fleet, except for a coupleof ships, had been destroyed in the battles of Io andthe Line. Fortunately, most of Korea’s industrialcapacity was Earth side or in near Earth orbit and wasnot destroyed when the Minbari flattened nearlyeverything in system.

Since the infrastructure was already in place, itwas decided that a small core of replacements wouldbe built based on the existing designs. However, anew series of designs were already in place to bringthe Korean navy up to current technology. Once thefleet was brought back to a minimum strength, workbegan on converting the infrastructure to the newdesign. Unfortunately, with a smaller economy andfewer resources, Korea would be forced to rebuild atslower pace than the Earth Alliance. The loss ofeconomic power relative to the Earth Alliance wouldset back Korean influence, but there was little option.

The new patrol ship was the first priority, and theeasiest of the new ships to build since it wouldoperate in the close proximity to Earth. The resultingJanggeom class cutter improved on the Kobuksonclass mission by offering a larger shuttle inventory, modern armor and a more flexible armament in theform of a nose mounted laser/pulse array.

A year later, the Goguryeo class armored cruiserwould appear. Unsurprisingly, the Goguryeo classwould serve in the exact same role as the earlierYi Sun-shin class. What was interesting, was thebasic design shape, which was very similar to theBrakiri Ikorta class assault cruiser. While not exactlythe same it was clear that Korea had benefitted froma little foreign design aid. Like the Janggeom class, the new design benefitted from modern armor andthe flexibility of a pair of laser/pulse arrays.

With its new fleet under construction, the

Aftermath-Take 2

Korean’s reached out to the Earth Alliance to solve arecurring problem. EarthForce assumed the Korean’swould be looking to purchase another Avenger heavycarrier hull to replace the one lost in the war. Thisrequest would be flatly denied, as EarthForce neededall the combat ships it could get. Instead, Koreaoffered to buy a Cotten Long Range Tender hull.Interestingly, EarthForce had just decided to writeone off rather than rebuild it. Suspicious as to thetiming, the Earth Alliance nevertheless agreed to sellthe hull, minus EarthForce hardware and the jumpengine. Korea took possession of the hull in Y2250and parked their new acquisition next to theGojoseon station. But rather than begin the refitprocess as expected, the Cotten deployed its drydock modules, and together with the station beganconstruction of a large, new capital-class hull.EarthForce Intelligence observed the subsequentconstruction carefully and quickly determined thatthe new hull would be a new class of warship.

It would take two years, but upon completion theOryonggeo class heavy cruiser would be the pride ofthe new Korean fleet. More importantly, the newcruiser was equipped with the first Korean designedjump engine, a feat made possible by the relaxationof trade barriers with the Earth Alliance following theDilgar War.

With the completion of the first Oryonggeo, theKoreans would finally upgrade the Cotten for fleetservice, while the Gojoseon station beganconstruction of the next heavy cruiser. Also equippedwith a Korean jump engine, the rebuilt Cotten wouldbe commissioned as the Yu Gwan-sun.

Following the close call mankind had justsuffered, the Earth Alliance began the BabylonProject. It was hoped that by building a station, theAlliance would prevent or defuse problems andcreate new allies. Despite the best intentions, theBabylon Station proved to be a difficult task andultimately required the aid of the Minbari, Centauriand the League of Non-Aligned Worlds. In order toremain directly involved in interstellar activity,Korean remained a steady, but small, contributorthroughout the entirety of the project. Unfortunately,Korea would reap little benefit from the station foronce Babylon 5 went online, the Earth Allianceentered what became known as the Time ofTroubles.

Time of Troubles

This period included the Martian revolts, theShadow War and the Earth Alliance Civil War. Alongwith most of the colony worlds of the Earth Alliance,

the Koreans stayed away from the Martian revolt andwere almost completely unaware of the opening actsof the Shadow War. However, during the EarthAlliance Civil War, the Koreans, along with the otherindependent nations and the Belt Alliance, wereordered by President Clark to stand down andsurrender to Loyalist Forces.

Unsurprisingly, all refused. Unfortunately, Clarkalready had forces positioned for this expectedresponse. Under presidential order, EarthForcelaunched a series of synchronized assaults on theindependent nations in an effort to seize their assetsand prevent their use against the Clark regime.

The Korean forces were largely caughtunprepared for so bold an act and the surprisednation was badly mauled, with her ground forcesoverwhelmed in less than a month. Korean spaceforces, by virtue of having more room to run, faired alittle better. Roughly half of Korea's ships escaped, byvirtue of the jump capable Yu Gwan-sun Tender andthe Heavy Cruisers. Those that could notwere either destroyed while resisting Clark’s initialattack or were scrapped once anything of value hadbeen stripped from their hulls. The Osat defense gridwas completely destroyed and the

The surviving Korean ships would join the rebelcoalition, and see limited action during the ShadowWar and during the closing acts of the Earth AllianceCivil War. The survivors were particularly active in theliberation of Earth.

Following the liberation of Earth, Korea onceagain found itself having to rebuild its fleet. Roughlytwo-thirds of its forces had been destroyed, and thistime much of her military infrastructure had alsobeen destroyed or dismantled during the ClarkRegime.

However, thanks to their contributions towardsthe liberation of Earth, Korea, along with the otherindependent nations of Earth, would be allowed tojoin the Interstellar Alliance. Though not afforded thecomplete benefits of an independent race, they wereconsidered participating members of the EarthAlliance contingent. As such, they were granted thesame advantages as the Earth Alliance.

In the short term, this amounted to economic aidtowards rebuilding. In addition, Korea sued the EarthAlliance for damages inflicted by the Earth Allianceduring Clark’s rule. Despite some grumbling, theEarth Alliance agreed to a settlement that included

cash payments, as well as access to new technologyresulting from the backward engineering ofInterstellar Alliance technology.

With cash in hand, and the aid of the InterstellarAlliance, Korea set about rebuilding its Navy. Onceagain, initial production priority would be given to thelight ships, most of which had been destroyed duringthe initial take over and subsequent action during theCivil War. Therefore, production of the Janggeomclass cutter and the Goguryeo class armored cruiserwas prioritized.

However, this time there would be a few changes.Throughout its history, the Korean Space Navy hadrelied on a few classes of vessels to provide defenseof the peninsula, and yet, time and time again, hadfound itself fighting in deep space, far from Earth.Without the benefit of the specialty vessels routinelydeployed by regular navies, the Korean fleets hadbeen forced to rely on allied vessels or fight at asignificant disadvantage. Going forward, thisdisadvantage would no longer be accepted, and toaddress these issues a number of variants wereinserted into the construction program. Thesevariants included a small carrier (Dalnim class) and alight ELINT ship (Haenim class) based on theGoguryeo class and a true combat frigate (Yongwangclass) based on the Janggeom class.

Finally, the entire surviving fighter force wouldonce again be replaced in total with the replacementof the Valkyrie by the new Sabre export fighter. Thechange over did not represent a particularly bigimpact given the fact that most of the KoreanValkyrie’s had been lost or absorbed into theEarthForce ranks during the Civil War.

Despite the presence of the Interstellar Allianceand it Whitestar Fleet, peace remained as elusive asever. The Interstellar Alliance-Centauri War was first, and while the forces of Earth did nothing beyondpatrolling and guard duty, encounters in deep spacedid take place. Korean forces were involved in a fewminor skirmish’s with Centauri forces when caughtbetween borders.

The Telepath War was yet another internalconflict amongst humans. Korea’s more openacceptance of telepaths and its resistance to PsiCorps activities within its borders, made Korea ahaven for rogue telepaths. And while the EarthAlliance remained scrupulously clean when it came topublic interference with Korea’s telepath policy, thesame could not be said for its clandestine operationson Korean soil.

The Drakh War began with a devastating attackon Earth. Korean forces once again operated in closeproximity with EarthForce vessels to stop the Drakh, and their Shadow Planet Killer, from destroying theEarth. Unfortunately, the combined forces of Earthwere unable to stop a secondary assault, whichreleased a nano-technology plague on the planet.

Despite the poisoning of Earth, the Earth Alliance,in conjunction with Korea and the other independentnations of Earth retained the strength to continueharrying the Drakh forces until their ultimate defeatat the hands of the Interstellar Alliance and Centauri.During this time, Korean forces were largely taskedwith the planetary quarantine of Earth, off-loadingthese duties from EarthForce, and freeing thoseforces to continue pressing the Drakh.

Essentially in command of the orbital forces inand around Earth, Korea found its command andcontrol resources taxed to new levels. Despite the aidof their Gojoseon station, the Korean capacity forcommand and control was overwhelmed, especiallyfor those forces on the far side of the planet, oppositethe station. Fortunately, an answer was already inthe works. With the help of the Earth Alliance, scientists were finally able to backward engineer apiece of

Since the Drakh incursion, Korea has continued togrow in strength and influence, and there is nocurrent reason to expect this to stop anytime soon. Anew generation of Korean ships will undoubtablytake their place among the stars and if historyremains consistent, the Koreans will go about it just alittle bit differently then everyone else.

Minbari technology provided under theauspices of Interstellar Alliance membership. InY2268, a Oryonggeo class heavy cruiser wasequipped with a Minbari derived command andcontrol system. Renamed the Chiha Yo Changgunclass Command Cruiser, the new vessel went a longway to resolving the command and control problem.

Chapter 3:

TechnologyIn the early years of their space program, the

Koreans were forced to essentially start from scratchdue to their unwillingness to join the Earth Alliance. In response to Korean independence, the EarthAlliance Senate embargoed the transfer and sales ofthose technologies necessary for modern spaceoperation. This included, compact, high performancefusion reactors, the latest high energy weapons andlarge scale space architecture.

This forced the Koreans to play catch up in termsof technology and restricted their initial designs tosmaller ships with weapon mixes that were both lowpower and easily produced. It also emboldened theKoreans to seek aid elsewhere, namely the BeltAlliance, the Centauri and the Brakiri.

However, when the embargoes were lifted, Koreawasted little time in acquiring more advancedtechnology and responded with improved shipsdesigns. By the time of Babylon 5, Korean technologywas equal to that of the Earth Alliance.

A chemical laser is powered by an energeticchemical reaction. This removes the necessity ofgenerating and storing the large amount of electricalenergy, which is used to power modern high-energylasers. This makes the chemical laser system easy topower, but limits their use to the supply of chemicalreagents carried. In addition, the overall quality ofthe lazing effect is less precise than that of highenergy laser, resulting in a slight reduction in beamdensity.

In game terms, the Chemical Laser series ofweapons are treated as laser class weapons thatoperate in raking mode. The raking damage is limitedto 8 points rather than the more typical 10 points andtheir resulting damage is more variable than theirstandard laser cousins. Their primary advantage is avery low power cost. Even the largest examples ofthese weapons use very little power. The primarydisadvantage is the finite supply of chemical reactantthat generates the laser beam, resulting in a“ammunition” limit.

The Belt Alliance and the earliest Raiders used thebasic Light Chemical Laser, and then only for a shortperiod of time. They both realized that resupply andstorage of the relatively rare and volatile chemicals

Chemical Laser

needed was logistically untenable given their deepspace operations. Only the Republic of Korea wouldexplore the full range of chemical lasers, as their fleetoperations were largely restricted to Earth localspace.

Use the normal hit chart. Inaddition, if the roll is greater than 18, subtract 18 andmark that many boxes of ammo (of the owningplayer's choice) destroyed. In addition, mark thatmany structure boxes to the section that laser isattached as result of an unconstrained chemicalexplosion.

The original chemical laser, the Light ChemicalLaser was used by the earliest Belt Alliance andRaider ships at a time when space rated fusion powersystems were limited to the most affluent nations, and then only for military application. Withperformance roughly similar to the Light Laser, theLight Chemical Laser uses one-third the power whilegenerating a beam of nearly equal intensity.Standard reactant load out allowed for twenty-fourshots before reloading was required.

While other races abandoned the chemical laserseries, the Koreans felt their advantages outweighedtheir disadvantages. Thus, their initial ships designsleft plenty of growth room for larger chemical laserdesigns. The resulting Medium Chemical Laser wastherefore easily installed and would become theprimary weapon of the first generation Korean fleet.Standard reactant load out allowed for sixteen shotsbefore reloading was required.

The Heavy Chemical Laser was the final evolutionof the chemical laser series. Installed only on theHaemosu class Jump Cruiser, this weapon utilized thetargeting system from the Belt Alliance Heavy BlastCannon. This made the Heavy Chemical Laser one ofthe longest ranged weapons in the human arsenal.Ultimately supplanted by the Heavy Laser Cannon, its reagent storage was sufficient for eight shots.

Laser WeaponsJust prior to the Dilgar War, the Koreans finally

began to produce their own lightweight, highcapacity fusion reactors. The addition of thesereactors made it possible to finally transition awayfrom the chemical laser series and move to thestandard laser equivalents.

Given their late start, Korea skipped the LightLaser Cannon completely and deployed the MediumLaser Cannon as the new primary heavy weapon justprior to the Dilgar War. It replaced nearly everyMedium Chemical Laser and Medium Blast Cannonon the first generation of Korean warships. TheKorean preference for the Medium Laser Cannon wasalmost pathological, and it remained a primaryweapon in the second generation Korean fleet, though as a part of the Laser/Pulse Array.

The Heavy Laser Cannon was added to theKorean fleet at the same time as it was to the EarthAlliance; during the Earth-Minbari War. In order tomount as many of the new weapons as quickly aspossible, EarthForce agreed to equip the Haemosuclass Jump Cruisers with the new weapon. TheHeavy Laser Cannon would also be included in thenew Oryonggeo class Heavy Cruiser. Interestingly, the total service life of the Heavy Laser Cannon withthe Korean Navy was only twenty years.

The Laser/Pulse Array was developed byEarthForce to combine the capabilities of the laserwith the new pulse technology developed from theDilgar War into one weapon, thereby increasing theflexibility of a ship accordingly. Introduced on theEarthForce Nova-Beta in Y2242, the new weaponcaught and held the attention of Korean Admiralty. They wasted no time in developing their own versionof this new weapon and deploying it as the primaryweapon for their post Earth-Minbari War, secondgeneration fleet.

The laser/pulse array can fire as either a mediumlaser or a medium pulse cannon (but not both at thesame time). This decision is made when weapons fire

allocations are determined (i.e., at the same time youare choosing targets for your guns). The mode inwhich it was used during the previous shot doesn'taffect the current shot, so you could---for example---use it in pulse mode every time it fired during thescenario.

The medium laser and medium pulse cannonmodes have different rates of fire (1 per 3 turns and1 per 2 turns, respectively). The time requirementbefore the next shot can be taken is based on thenext mode used (it has no bearing on the previoustype of shot).

This is the obvious extension of Laser/Pulse Arraytechnology, enlarged to the heaviest possible versionof this versatile weapon class. It is very rare anddifficult to maintain, and currently only appears onthe EarthForce Omega-Gamma class CommandDestroyer and the Korean Chiha Yo Changgun classCommand Cruiser.

Except for its basic statistics, it can be treated thesame as a normal Laser/Pulse Array for all rules(including critical hits).

If it fires in laser mode, it can use sustained fire. However, it must observe the usual cool down periodassociated with this mode, which will also delay itsuse as a pulse weapon until the cooling time hasexpired.

These are one of the earliest known matterweapons and were originally developed for useagainst Raider ships and fighters, but today arerarely used. The Koreans purchased the technologyfrom the Belt Alliance, and used the Light BlastCannon as its primary light weapon for its firstgeneration fleet. They also used the Medium BlastCannon on a number of its upgraded first generationships before abandoning the technology completelyfor more modern weapons. Unlike the Belt Alliance, the Korean Navy never deployed the Heavy BlastCannon.

The blast cannon series is much like a ship-mounted shotgun, firing a cluster of "bullets"towards a nearby target. The spread of the shot is

For example, if fired on turn 1 in eithermode, it could fire again on turn 3 in pulse mode, butcould not be used as a laser until turn 4.

not wide enough to strike multiple units, but scoresdamage using the pulse rules. As with the pulsecannon, the accuracy of the shot can provide a bonusto the volley count roll. However, blast cannons arenot as advanced as the pulse cannon, possessing agrouping range of + 1 per 5.

One of the primary disadvantages of theseweapons is that their ammunition must bespecifically constructed for the launcher. Thus, anammunition track is required (and if the gun isdestroyed, so is its ammo). In most scenarios, running out of ammo will not be a problem, althoughit could be troublesome in a campaign. Somescenarios might specify that launchers on a givenship begin play partially empty. There is no cost forbasic blast cannon ammunition.

Use the normal hit chart. Inaddition, if the roll is greater than 18, subtract 18 andmark that many boxes of ammo (of the owningplayer's choice) destroyed.

The Light Blast Cannon was the first weapondeveloped in the blast cannon series and isessentially an anti-fighter weapon. However, thanksto its armor piercing attribute, the Light Blast Cannonremains somewhat useful against larger ships.

The Medium Blast Cannon, or more simply BlastCannon, was a heavy gun for the first generationKorean fleet. The Medium Blast Cannon is much likethe light version, but is more powerful and has amuch higher damage yield. The ammunition it uses isof a different size and composition, and cannot beexchanged with the ammo used by other types ofcannons.

These are one of the most basic and commonweapon types. The Koreans use particle weapons fortheir lighter, support weapons, for anti-fighter workand for their fighter weapons.

In general, particle weapons have no specialdamage procedures or abilities. However, they oftencause damage in standard mode, meaning they cancause significant damage to a single system on a hit.

This was the first ship based particle weapondeployed by the Koreans, replacing the Light BlastCannon. Never particularly popular, Korean captainswere convinced that the reduced range of the LightParticle Beam, when compared to the Light BlastCannon, was not sufficiently balanced by the newerweapon’s improved anti-fighter and interceptabilities.

The much improved replacement for the LightParticle Beam, the Korean’s wasted little time inrolling out the new weapon to the entire fleet. Firstdeployed in Y2185, the Standard Particle Beamremains the Korean’s primary light weapon.

Despite its projectile based nature, the GatlingGun is not a matter weapon. The shells fired lack thevelocity of true matter weapon, thus relegating theGatling Gun to the particle class. Short ranged, constrained by ammunition, the Gatling Gun wouldbe quickly replaced by the Ultralight Particle Beam.

This weak fighter-mounted weapon is a low-techdevice installed on the Korean’s Delta-V fighters. Itsprimary advantages were its low cost andmaintainability. Among fighter weapons it is one ofthe least powerful, however.

Pulse cannons are an advanced form of the morebasic Dilgar pulsar weapons and are currently usedby several races. A pulse weapon launches a series ofsix rapid bursts each time it fires. When it hits, anumber of these pulses impact the target, doingdamage to several systems.

The introduction of these weapons by the variousrace’s to their post-Dilgar War fleets was prolific.Despite this, the Koreans did not embrace the newweapon. Some upgrades were made, but theMedium Laser and Standard Particle Beam remainedthe preferred weapon combination of the fleet. Even

The Light Pulse Cannon is the weakest of thepulse weapons, used normally in an anti-fighter role.Though its damage yield is very low, its ability to firerapidly makes it a capable defensive weapon. Onlythe pulse variant of the Yi Sun-shin ever carried thisweapon in action.

The Medium Pulse Cannon, usually called simplythe Pulse Cannon is a medium-strength version ofthe typical pulse gun. The most widely deployedpulse cannon by the Koreans, its use was reduced toa single variant class after the Earth-Minbari War,replaced by the more flexible Laser/Pulse Array.

The Uni-Pulse Cannon was the primary weapon ofthe second generation of Korean fighters, includingthe Valkyrie and Sabre fighters and the HadesAssault Shuttle. Although it is a pulse weapon, it firesonly one shot.

The Koreans deployed a number of missiles andmissiles racks during the development of their firstgeneration fleet. Despite this, the Koreansabandoned missile weapons for their secondgeneration of fleet vessels, even as the Earth Alliancereturned to their use.

One of the most basic and low cost missilelaunching systems, the Class-GO Missile Rackconsisted of little more than a basic frame worksystem, housing four missiles and the bare minimumof electronics. The electronics provided no targetingdata and was only capable of cuing the missile’s ownguidance package towards the target before launch.

The missile rack’s only redeeming quality was itscheapness to construct and its low technology andmaintenance needs.

As there was no automated missile-reloadsystem, any reload of the Class-GO required an EVAby space-suited individuals. As such, the missileusually loaded into the Class-GO was the Light(Type-D) missile. While it was technically feasible toequip the Class-GO with the heavier Basic (Type-B)missile it was rarely done. Instead the move wasmade to the larger and more capable missile racks.

The origins of the modern missile rack began withthe introduction of the Class-O missile rack. Unlikethe earlier Class-GO, the Class-O was equipped withdedicated targeting electronics, improving theaccuracy of any missiles launched from the rack. Inaddition, an enlarged ammunition bin, with anautomated reload system was also included. Despitethis, the Class-O had a launch rate that was no betterthan the Class-GO it replaced.

The Class-SO missile rack improved on theprimary weakness of the Class-O rack, namely firingrate. This significantly improved the performance ofmissile armed ships and counted the currentgeneration of energy weapons.

The Class-S missile rack was an evolutionaryimprovement of the Class-SO rack. It offered a largerammunition magazine and a slightly improvedtargeting system, but failed to introduce any othersignificant improvements.

This "rapid-fire" missile rack has two missile tubesinstead of one, and can fire up to one missile per turninstead of Class-S rack’s one every other turn. Twomissiles in a single turn is not possible due to thealternating nature of the rack.

The main disadvantage of the Class-R missile rackis an increased vulnerability to magazine hits (due tothe double connection to the magazine itself).Magazine criticals are scored against this rack on anatural “19” or “20.”

MissilesKorea deployed several missile types before

abandoning missile technology in their secondgeneration fleet. They are described as follows:

This is the standard missile.Unless otherwise specified, racks have only this type.

This missile does no damage, but instead creates a thick cloud of metallic particlesin front of the target. Any non-ballistic weapons firefrom that unit at any target on the same turn isreduced by the chaff missile's intercept rating of -3.After that turn is over, the chaff disperses and has nofurther effect. Multiple chaff missiles from the sameunit at the same target are not cumulative. Chaffmissiles count as having a warhead strength of 0points for purposes of magazine criticals.

The light missile is similar tothe basic missile, but scores only twelve points ofstandard mode damage on a hit, not twenty. Whilethis seems weak by today's standards, it could beeffective against lightly armored ships, and costsonly about a third as much to build as a basic missile(a fact which will have meaning only in a campaign).

This missile scores the samedamage as a normal missile, but does so in flashmode. Missiles of this type are excellent againstflights of fighters, as the flash scores collateraldamage against all other fighters in the flight.

These missiles tradepropulsion for an enlarged warhead. They are soshort-ranged as to be all but useless in battle, thoughships with Class-L racks find them quite powerful. Ifused on a fighter-sized target (including super-heavyfighters), they suffer a -3 penalty to hit.

Another example ofsuperior ballistic technology, the Type-J missile wasdesigned to operate as an impromptu defensiveELINT unit. It is a proximity weapon, launched at ahex instead of a ship or fighter. Use the proximityrules to handle launch of the jammer missile, exceptthat it does not scatter. Upon arriving in the targethex, it emits a burst of sensor static, which producesthe effect of 2 points of blanket ELINT protection forall units (even enemy units) within 5 hexes in alldirections. Note that this cannot be combined withother blanket protection effects from nearby scoutsor other jammer missiles!

The jammer missile is very expensive, and since itburns out at the end of the turn it is used, its utility islimited. However, a fleet without a scout may findthese a cheap alternative to an expensive ELINT unit, even if bought in quantity.

Basic Missile (B):

Chaff Missile (C):

Light Missile (D):

Flash Missile (F):

Heavy Missile (H):

Jammer Missile (J):

Long-Range Missile (L):

Basic Missiles (Class-FB):

Dogfight Missiles (Class-FY):

The opposite of aheavy missile, these traded warhead strength forincreased propulsion. Coupled with a Class-L rack,long-range missiles could be launched at targets atranges almost equaling those of the Ion Torpedo orEnergy Mine.

Korea deployed two fighters that were capable ofusing missiles, the Valkyrie and the Sabre. Given thelimited size of the Korean fleet and the desire tomaximize firepower, Korean Admirals rarely deployedfighters without their missiles.

Most fighter missiles, like their larger cousins, also provide an additional +3 bonus to hit. Anyvariation due to different fighter missile types isdescribed below. Unless noted otherwise, fightermissiles cannot be loaded on ships, or vice versa.

Fighters use astandardized missile referred to as the basic fightermissile. This has a launch range of 10 (distance range30) and scores 10 points of damage when it hits. Thebasic fighter missile costs 8 points per missile.

This smallmissile was designed for use in dogfights. Its damageyield is weak, but as its intended target is the lightfighters typically deployed by Raiders, this is not asignificant drawback.

The Class-Y missile can be used on regular missilefighters such as the Thunderbolt and Badger, butusing the lighter ordnance does not allow suchfighters to carry more of them. Class-Y missilesreplace basic missiles only on a one-for-one basis. Inaddition, they have a lower launch range (8 hexes)and score less damage (6 points) than the basic type. They are also cheaper, costing only 2 Combat Points.

Despite these disadvantages, the dogfight missilehas one advantage over heavier missiles: it can besnap-fired. To use this option, the launching fightermust be at range zero to an enemy target (either afighter or ship). The missile simply fires directlyforward with no attempt to lock onto or seek itsobjective. It is not launched during the usual ballisticfire step of the Combat Sequence, but instead is firedlike a non-ballistic weapon (in addition to any otherweapons the fighter has). It rolls to-hit directlyagainst the defense rating of the target with a bonusof +4 to hit. It is not affected by any sort of EW,offensive bonus, range, jamming, or shields whenlaunched in this way. It is, however, vulnerable tojinking as well as defensive fire.

Chapter 4:

Military

Starships &

Fighters

The Korean navy’s mission statement has alwaysbeen to provide patrol and protection of Koreaninterests. Originally, this meant the space directlyover the Korean peninsula and Korean interests inthe asteroid fields. However, with the introduction ofhyperspace, this mission was expanded to includeextra-solar activities and trade protection.

Despite relatively modern technology and a fullrange of starship designs, the Korean navy has neverbeen particularly large. Whether constrained by theeconomic limits of their country or their limitedmission needs, the Korean fleet has never totaledmore than a few dozen ships and as many fightersquadrons.

And yet, the Korean navy has participated inseveral skirmishes, three wars and a civil war. It hasbeen rebuilt from scratch once and been severelyweakened twice. Several Korean captains andcommanders are as battle tested as any of theirEarthForce brethren.

The Korean navy has relied on two generations ofvessels since its inception. The first generationcarried the Koreans into space and by virtue of aseries of regular upgrades, through the Earth-Minbari War. Initially these ships were lightlyarmored, had poor sensors and were equipped withlow technology, low power weapons. In order to keepup with EarthForce and other organizations theseships would see multiple refits throughout theirlifetime. So while the basic design of these shipsremained unchanged, their capabilities wouldcontinue to improve throughout their lives. A sizablepercentage of the fleet would be destroyed duringthe Dilgar War. The entirety of the fleet would beessentially destroyed at the Battle of the Line.

Rather than rebuild around these first generationvessels, the Koreans chose to introduce a secondgeneration of vessels. These units would benefitfrom the latest in technology and can be consideredequal to their modern contemporaries, thoughprobably a bit undersized. This second generation ofships would also see the first real use of hull variants.Like most races, these variants tended involve thecreation of specialized units like ELINT, small carriers,

etc., something the first generation Korean fleetnever possessed.

Finally, all of Korea’s design efforts to date havebeen in direct support of their military and patrolmissions. Support mission demands have been metwith vessels purchased from the Earth Alliance orwith the use of ad hoc civilian hulls.

Deployed at the same time as the Yi Sun-shinCorvette, the Kobukson Patrol Ship was named forthe “turtle” ship, which was designed by AdmiralYi Sun-shin and was one of the first ironclad warshipsof ancient Earth. These ships played a significant partin the war against Japanese invaders during the late1590's.

The Kobukson was intended to be the Korean’scontribution to Quarantine Command and wasessentially a smaller Yi Sun-shin with one majorexception, a large (for the day) shuttle bay. Theshuttle bay would initially house a large shuttlecontingent, but would later include old Centauriassault shuttles, and later, Earth Alliance designedassault shuttles and breaching pods.

The Kobukson would see three upgrades to itsweapons, armor and sensors during its lifetime. Theclass would be essentially obliterated at the Battle ofthe Line, with the exception of one lone survivor. Afew would be built following the war, but the classwas soon replaced by a more modern design.

The Yi Sun-shin Corvette was named for a Koreanadmiral of the late sixteenth century, considered bymany military historians to be one of the best militaryleaders of his time. As suggested by the name, theYi Sun-shin class would be the main combat elementof the Korean fleet.

Initially equipped with light, low-tech weapons, the Yi Sun-shin would see no less than four upgradesand the addition of one variant. These upgradeswould see to the continuous improvement of theirweapons, armor and sensors, keeping theYi Sun-shin a viable combatant throughout itsoperational lifetime.

Every active member of the class was destroyedat the Battle of the Line, the culmination of the Earth-Minbari War. Following the war, the Koreans chose todevelop a new class of combat ship, relegating theYi Sun-shin to the history books.

A derivative of Yi Sun-shin, this variant class wasconverted to pulse technology in Y2241. It was an allor nothing update, which saw its entire energyweapon package replaced with a combination ofmedium and light pulse cannons. The pulsetechnology was a break from the laser first attitude ofthe Korean navy, and the new corvette variant wasnever particularly popular. This, despite theoverwhelming popularity of pulse weaponsthroughout the rest of the universe.

The Nopunde series of orbital satellites wasnamed for the mythical castle of Nopunde, whosethen awesome height made the castle seeminglyinvulnerable.

The Nopunde orbital satellites come in two forms. The “A” series, which is missile armed and a “B”version, which is armed with a laser system.Compared to most races’ defense grid satellites, theNopunde series of orbital satellites are undersized, but easy to make, easy to update and, typically, easyto support. Two upgrades have thus far been appliedto these satellites, resulting in a much more capabledefense grid.

Based on an Earth Alliance Orion-Beta SpaceStation, the Gojoseon station was completed with allKorean technology. Named for the first Koreankingdom, the new space station would create apermanent Korean presence in Earth orbit andfacilitate the construction of larger and moreadvanced hulls. One of the few survivors of theEarth-Minbari War, the station has only beenupgraded once to date.

The Haemosu Jump Cruiser was named for aKorean sun deity who rode a chariot as he ascendedand descended from the heavens each day. TheHaemosu possessed a jump engine purchased fromthe Centauri, a squadron of fighters and, thanks tosome help from the Belt Alliance, one of the longestranged weapons to date, the Heavy Chemical Laser.

Only a very few ever existed, and they werecarefully hoarded by the Korean Admiralty. Updatedonly once before the Earth-Minbari War, one wouldsurvive the war by jumping out of battle when itappeared that all hope was lost. Following the war,she would spend her remaining days acting asKorea’s jump gate, never leaving her orbit aboveEarth. Instead of purchasing additional jump enginesfrom the Centauri, the Koreans came to anagreement with the Earth Alliance for aid in thedevelopment of their own jump engine, which wouldbe installed in a new cruiser design.

Prior to the Dilgar War, the Koreans purchased anAvenger heavy carrier hull from the Earth Alliance.Delivered without weapons or a jump engine, thenew carrier was equipped with all Korean systems. The empty space formerly devoted to the jumpengine was used to increase the primary hanger, allowing for the additional of an assault shuttle force.

The new carrier was named Jang Bogo after apowerful maritime figure who, for several decades, effectively controlled the West Sea. Completed inY2226, the Jang Bogo would allow the Korean navyto finally mass fighters away from Earth orbit.

Never updated beyond her initial condition, shewould be destroyed at the Battle of the Line, after herfighter group was obliterated by the Minbari.

Janggeom literally means "Admiral's Sword” andwhile it does not literally represent the twin swords ofAdmiral Yi Sun-shin, the legacy of the nextgeneration of the Korean Space Navy was clearlymaintained.

Introduced following the Earth-Minbari War, theJanggeom Cutter was, simply put, a better version ofthe earlier Kobukson Patrol Ship. A larger shuttle baygave the Janggeom more coverage, while theweapon systems were made more flexible. Survivalfactors like armor, sensors and sensor cross sectionwere all improved, and the best features of theearlier Kobukson retained. Korean Admiralty wasvery pleased with the result.

Named for a type of armor made of little steelplates woven together to make a flexible shirt,Korea’s new heavy combat ship shared a remarkableresemblance to the Brakiri Ikorta Assault Cruiser. Itsdesign may well have benefitted from Brakiri aidsince the hull would see several variations, all ofwhich the Ikorta had already seen. Despite thespeculation, neither the Brakiri or the Koreans havesaid anything.

Armed with a pair of laser/pulse arrays and theusual standard particle beam fit, the Goguryeo isquite well armored and reasonably maneuverable.Interestingly, the ship was designed to carry twobreaching pods though they were rarely carried, usually replaced by two more standard shuttles.

Undersized when compared with the OmegaDestroyer of the Earth Alliance, the OryonggeoHeavy Cruiser still represents the cutting edge ofKorean technology, every bit as capable andadvanced as that of the Earth Alliance.

The Oryonggeo was named for the "Five DragonChariot" which Haemosu rode when he descended toearth and ascended into heaven. It could transportthe rider almost anywhere with the speed of thewind. Given its Korean designed jump engine, thename is very appropriate.

Equipped with laser/pulse array’s, a single heavylaser, a heavy standard particle beam battery and asquadron of fighters, the Oryonggeo is a match formany other races’ primary cruisers. To achieve all ofthis came at an enormous cost, limiting the numberof heavy cruisers that could be constructed.

In Y2250, the Korean Navy purchased anEarthForce Cotten Long Range Tender. Rebuilt withKorean systems and a Korean jump engine, theYu Gwan-sun Tender would finally provide theKorean Navy with a purpose built support unit forprolonged, long range deployment.

Named for a student and organizer against theJapanese colonial rule of Korea in the late 1920’s andconsidered by many as the Korean Joan of Arc, theYu Gwan-sun would successfully escape the initialassault by Clark’s forces and find its way to the rebelcoalition. There, her shipyard modules would proveinvaluable supporting the various EarthForce shipsthat chose to side with Sheridan against the Clarkregime.

The appearance of the Dalnim Carrier convincedall interested parties that the Koreans had contactedthe Brakiri and gained some valuable designguidance. Named for the moon in Korean mythology, and sister of the sun, Haenim, the new carrier wasagain, remarkably similar to the Brakiri carrier variantof the Ikorta.

By downgrading the Goguryeo’s laser/pulsearrays to Medium Pulse Cannons, dropping thebreaching pods and reducing the reactor size, theKorean engineers found enough space for a fullsquadron of fighters. The new carrier finally gave thetypical Korean deep space patrol a fighter presencewithout relying on one of the rare heavy cruisers.

Having seen the similarity between the originalGoguryeo to the Brakiri Ikorta, followed by theDalnim as compared to the Brakiri Brikorta, it wasonly a matter of time before another Brakiri derivedvariant of the Goguryeo would appear.

cruiser final gave the Koreans their own scouting andcombat ELINT capability. The sensor system issimilar to the older EarthForce Oracle Scout’s primarysensor array, which leaves the cruiser somewhat at adisadvantage against more modern systems, but itremains a balanced design.

To date, all of the medium class ships designed bythe Koreans had been intended to provide planetarypatrol and deal with the occasional raider. Thrust intoa number of fleet engagements, these vessels hadcome off second best when set against light unitsspecifically design for combat.

To that end, the Korean Admiralty placed arequest for a true medium combat vessel. Named theYongwang for the Korean dragon-god of the seas, the new frigate would be based on the JanggeomCutter. By removing the hanger bay, it allowed for asignificant increase in the number of weapons. However, it proved impossible to mount any more ofthe large laser/pulse array’s. Therefore, it wasdecided to remove the existing laser/pulse arrayweapon and go with a more tradition weapons suite.

Unfortunately, the vessel was no moremaneuverable than its police cousin, and itsendurance went from bad to worse. Politicallyunpopular, the Yongwang would not see regularproduction.

Equipped with an advanced Minbari commandand control system, the Chiha Yo ChanggunCommand Cruiser is the flagship of the Korean fleet.Named for a village guardian and a general of theunderworld in Korean mythology, the new cruiserwas incredibly expensive to build and has proven tobe equally expensive to operate. Adding to the costwas the decision by the Korean Admiralty to replacethe original Oryonggeo’s heavy laser cannon with thenew heavy laser/pulse array, the first ever installed ina Korean vessel.

Developed by the Belt Alliance, the Beta-Seriesfighter was capable of operating in both atmosphericand space environments. Little more than a space

only Alpha-Series fighter equipped with anaerodynamic shell, the Beta-Series provided oneadditional, but vital improvement, at least to thepilots, in the form of a pressurized cockpit. Deployedin Y2126, the Beta would suffer from a number ofminor, but nerve wracking, problems with its aero-shell during reentry maneuvers, but for the mostpart, proved as robust as its space-only Alpha-Seriesbrethren.

The shuttles originally deployed aboard theKobukson Patrol Ship made the boarding of pirateand smuggling ships difficult. Following the arrival ofthe Centauri, Korea made a number of discreteovertures to the Centauri, and purchased a moresuitable shuttle. Although the Centauri consideredthe Lakrit Assault Shuttle an out of date design, theywere and quite to sell the Koreans asmany as they wanted.

Equipped with the same gatling gun as the Beta-Series fighter. Three of these “new” assault shuttleswould be assigned to each Kobukson in Y2165.

Developed in a cooperative design venturebetween the Earth Alliance and Belt Alliance, theDelta-V fighter that resulted was a remarkably longlived and robust design. The Koreans providedfunding to the Belt Alliance side and received, incompensation, the basic design plans. Overnight theDelta-V would become the baseline Korean fighter, replacing the absolutely antiquated Beta-Seriesfighters.

Taking advantage of the goodwill generatedduring the Dilgar War, the Koreans purchased anumber of Hades Assault Shuttles from the EarthAlliance. The new shuttles were in far bettercondition than the old Centauri Lakrit AssaultShuttles currently in use, and were far easier tomaintain with Earth-based technology. They wereimmediately deployed on the Kobukson Patrol Ships.

Base Hull (Unlimited Deployment)

Following the Dilgar War, the Koreans wereallowed to purchase the new Earth Alliance LampreyBreaching Pod. The breaching pod solved theongoing problem of how to deal with ships whosecrews continued to resist after their ship wasdisabled. Crash landing assault shuttles was toodangerous and the Lamprey was the perfect solution.

Routinely deployed on Kobukson Patrol Ships, theLamprey, in conjunction with the new Hades AssaultShuttles, made for a formidable police presence.

The Valkyrie is an atmospheric fighter developedby the Earth Alliance as a replacement to the Delta-V.An unpopular design, EarthForce used itsdevelopment to create the technology needed tocarry the heavier basic fighter missile in place of theolder Class-Y missile.

The Valkyrie entered service in Y2237 and, for allof EarthForce’s complaints, proved to be animpressive addition to the order of battle.Atmospheric capable, the new Valkyrie was largerthan the older Delta-V, allowing it to carry two of themore powerful uni-pulse cannons, as well asmissiles.

Procurement of the new fighter never reachedsignificant levels and only sufficient numbers wereacquired to equip the standing planetary assaultgroups. The rights to the fighter would be sold to theKoreans who were very pleased with its capabilities.

One of the outstanding successes during theShadow War and EA Civil War was the Thunderboltfighter. Numerous attempts to purchase the fighterby various races, independent nations andorganizations were largely rejected by the EarthAlliance, especially during the President Clark leadperiod. In the post Clark era, these offers werereconsidered and only the vehement objection byEarthForce Admiralty convinced the Senate to notauthorize sales. In a compromise, EarthForce agreedto develop an export class hull based on a modifiedThunderbolt.

The Sabre fighter appears as a scaled downThunderbolt equipped with a pair of Uni-Pulsecannons (EarthForce continues to hold back the

cutting edge Gatling Pulse Cannon), supported bythe Valkyrie missile system. In terms of performance, the Sabre is more of a scaled up Valkyrie than ascaled down Thunderbolt. But the various EarthAlliance sanctioned arms dealers played up the newfighter’s Thunderbolt like appearance withremarkable success, which included the Koreans.

The Koreans have never built their own mines, and have thus far purchased them from the EarthAlliance and other races. It simply was not cost-effective to construct assembly lines for what wouldbe limited production runs.

The Koreans initially purchased their mines fromthe Centauri Republic. They included the Raji-16,Corant-A, Corant-B (limited), and the Ekos-A(restricted). The Centauri tended to overcharge fortheir mines, but the Koreans only needed enough tocover the space over the peninsula, which kept theprice under control.

Following the Dilgar War, Korea decided toreplace its Centauri mines with those from the EarthAlliance. They purchased the following Earth Alliancemodels: Class-P1, Class-P2 (limited), Class-C1,Class-C2 (limited), Class-D2. As with the Centauri, these mines are often bought at a significantmarkup.

Mines listed as "limited" are restricted to 33% of afield's content, and "restricted" ones at most 10%.Use the same rules as limited and restricteddeployment for ship designs. Mines without anyrestriction can be acquired in effectively limitlessquantities.

Finally, the Koreans purchased all of their mineswith the Command Controller option. Simply put,Korea was uncomfortable with deploying mines in alocal region of space where ships of the EarthAlliance might “accidently” blunder. It was simpler topay extra to avoid an international incident.

ScenariosThis chapter provides a series of scenarios

representing the various conflicts that took placethroughout the history of the Korean Navy. Thesescenarios should give players the opportunity to usethe various Korean units, as well as give them a feelas to the changes that occurred in these vesseldesigns with the passage of time.

One of the favorite routes out of the asteroidfields was a sling shot maneuver around a particularset of large asteroids. The route was the called “TheArc.” Obviously, the Raiders knew the route as well, especially the hiding places along the route. But theKoreans had a major shipment organized anddecided to clear the road. They leaked a bogusshipment date through their “connections” and whenthe Raiders moved in towards their favorite hidingspots along that route, they found the Korean Navywaiting for them.

Raiders: 4 Raider Corsairs in hexes 1917, 2015,2018, and 2117, facing left, speed 2.

Korean: 1 Yi Sun-shin Mk-I in hex 0719,2 Kobukson Mk-I’s, one in hex 1413 andhex 1521, facing right, speed 4.

Fighters: There are no fighters in this scenario.

The location is in a cul-de-sac with extremelydense, unpassable asteroids along the top, left andbottom of the map. Units existing along these sidesare considered destroyed.

The Korean forces have just moved out from theirconcealment and both sides are aware of eachother’s locations. The Koreans have a +5 to initiativefor the first two turns.

1 – 2 The Raiders have received a significantdefeat and will go out of their way to leavethe Koreans alone for awhile and look forgreener pastures elsewhere.

3 – 5 Not exactly the message the Koreans werehoping to send, but at least the Raiders havebeen put on notice.

6 – 7 The Koreans had hoped to send a messageto the Raiders. Unfortunately, they sent thewrong one. The Raiders will be bolder thanever now.

8 The Koreans have suffered a stunningdefeat. The Raiders are now in completecontrol of “The Arc” and Korea’s profits willsuffer accordingly.

The Koreans did not quite gain the completesurprise they were hoping for, but did manage todestroy two of the four Corsairs. Unfortunately, theRaiders managed to destroy a Kobukson in theprocess. Still the word was out that the Koreansweren't going to be pushed around and were willingto come looking for the Raiders.

The original Balos assault plan had the combinedforces of the Balosian and Republic of South America(RSA) drawing off a portion of the Dilgar Navy. Thisforce would then be obliterated by the combinedmight of the Allied fleet after which the Allies wouldturn on the remaining Dilgar forces and destroythem. Unfortunately, the Balosian/RSA did their jobstoo well and the Dilgar countered with a force muchbigger than expected, leaving the planet of Balosexposed. EarthForce quickly altered their timetableand launched their assault on the planet of Balosearly. They sent the Koreans to aid the Balosian/RSAforces by ordering them intercept a Dilgar task force.

Fighters: The Korean ships are equipped withDelta-V Fighters and Lakrit AssaultShuttles. The Dilgar are equipped withThorun MK-II Fighters.

The Dilgar jumped in 2 turns earlier, the Leskrati'sjump engine will not be recharged until Turn 28.

The Koreans just jumped in; the jump engine ofthe Haemosu will not be recharged until Turn 20.

Each missile rack on the Athraskala-C is equippedwith 2 Flash missiles. The Ochalvita bomb racks areequipped with Basic missiles and 1 Flash missile.

The Leskrati, Athraskala, Abrithi-B and the twoJashakar have formed a Pentacan formation.

The Ochlavita-B and Abrithi-B each have 1 flightof fighters deployed. The Haemosu has 1 flightdeployed, while the Jang Bogo has 2. Fighters aredeployed within 6 hexes of their parent ship.

Whichever side is left holding the field of battle isthe winner.

The Dilgar task force was an hastily assembled,ad hoc group, to reinforce the original force sent todeal with the Balosian/RSA force. The Dilgar arrivedfirst, dropping out of hyperspace far enough from thebattle to determine the situation. The Koreansarrived a few minutes later. The Dilgar WarLeaderrecognized the situation for what it was and decidedthat this was a good day to die. He sent his forces intobattle with orders to fight to the last. The Koreanswent in with orders to conduct a holding action untilfurther reinforcements arrived….none did. When thebattle was over, the entire Dilgar force was gone. TheKoreans lost both Kobuksons, one of the two Yi Sun-shins, essentially all their fighters, and the pricelessHaemosu Jump Cruiser. The Jang Bogo was badlydamaged, as was the other Yi Sun-shin. Only theYi Song-gye cruiser was left largely intact.

Io NightmareKorea managed to remain uninvolved throughout

the majority of the Earth-Minbari War. But asEarthForce continued to lose ground, there came therealization that the Minbari were not going torecognizing Korean humans versus Earth Alliancehumans and would kill both equally. WhenEarthForce was finally pushed back to Earth, theKoreans were forced to join in the defense of Earth.

Assigned to the Io jumpgate, the Korean forcewas grouped with the other independent nationalforces in the hopes of sowing some confusion withinthe Minbari forces. The multi-national fleet wasassigned, by nation, to various sectors around themoon. The plan was that when the Minbari arrived, the closest fleet would conduct a holding action, while the remaining fleets rallied to reinforce. It wasa classic set piece military maneuver. It failedcompletely, when Minbari forces simultaneouslyjumped in on every fleet around Io. There would beno reinforcements; each nation would fight alone.

Terrain: Use standard map. The right edge ofthe map represents the outer edge ofthe atmosphere of Io.

Minbari: 2 Sharlin, 4 Tinashi, 1 Esharan,1 Letann within 5 hexes of the left sideof the map, facing right, speed 4. Formtwo groups, each around a Sharlin, nocloser than 10 hexes.

Fighters: The Koreans are equipped with ValkyrieFighters, Hades Assault Shuttles andLamprey Breaching Pods. The Minbariare equipped with Nial Fighters andCombat Flyers.

The Minbari just jumped in, and both Sharlinjump engines will not be recharged until Turn 10.

The Sharlin's each have 1 flight of fightersdeployed. The Haemosu has 1 flight deployed, whilethe Jang Bogo has 2. Fighters are deployed within 6hexes of their parent ship.

The Sharlin's, along with the Letann, are underorders to jump away when their jump enginesrecharge, in order to rejoin the primary assault onEarth. The remaining Tinashi may remain to continuethe battle if desired.

Score 0.5 victory points for each Kobuksondestroyed and a 1 victory point for the remainingKorean ships. Subtract 3.5 victory points for eachSharlin destroyed and 1.5 victory points for theremaining Minbari ships. Crippled ships count as half.Minbari ships that jump away before Turn 10 areconsidered crippled. Compare the total victory pointswith the following table to determine the Minbarilevel of victory.

12+ Total Victory: The Koreans were obliteratedand managed little in the way of resistance.

7 to 11 Major Victory: Despite some damage, theMinbari left a tattered remnant of theKorean force.

2 to 6 Minor Victory: The Koreans provided aspirited battle, but were ultimately beaten.

-3 to 1 Draw: The Koreans gave as good as theygot.

-8 to -4 Minor Loss: Thanks to a combination of badluck and Korean perseverance, the Minbaritook heavier losses than was expected.

-13 to -9 Major Loss: Luck is fickle and the Minbarisaw significant losses and failed to defeatthe Koreans.

-14 Total Loss: Lady luck is Korean. The Minbariwere completely overwhelmed withessentially no loss of Korean life.

The Minbari jumped into medium range of theKorean fleet and immediately opened fire, apparently undeterred by the appearance of non-EarthForce ships. Fortunately, the Jang Bogo wasfurthest from the Minbari giving her time to launchher remaining fighters. The Korean's initiallyconcentrated their fire on the lead Minbari Frigates, causing severe damage to one and minor damage toa second. The return fire devastated the front rank ofthe Korean fleet. Follow-up fire further damaged the

second Minbari frigate, forcing the two heavilydamaged frigates to jump away. The Jang Bogofighter strike scored damage to the lead Sharlin butwas devastated by the Nials and the Esharan. Returnfire from the two Sharlins obliterated the twoYi Song-gye cruisers. By now the range had droppedto virtually zero. The Korean forces damaged theremaining Tinashi, while the remaining Valkyrie'ssavaged the Esharan. In return the Minbari lightforces crushed the remaining Korean light forces andthe two Sharlin's obliterated the Jang Bogo in onecombined salvo. The entire Minbari force proceededto jump away, leaving only the Haemosu JumpCruiser and a lone Kobukson Patrol Ship.

When Clark began his takeover, he called for thestand down of all independent militaries operatingwithin the Earth Alliance. Unsurprisingly, theseorganizations universally declined the order.Unfortunately, Clark was hardly a fool, and hadanticipated this likely outcome. He had wisely pre-positioned several pro-Clark task forces nearpotential hot spots throughout the Earth Alliance. One such task force was waiting in hyperspace near aKorean task force. When Korea refused to standdown, this force was given the go order. The taskforce immediately jumped in and opened fire.

The Valkyrie's are loaded with 2 Class-Y and1 Basic fighter missiles each. The Thunderbolts havea complete load of 6 Basic fighter missiles and arealso equipped with Navigators.

The Omega-A has 2 flights of fighters deployed(only 1 may be Thunderbolts). The Oryonggeo hasboth of its flights deployed. Fighters are deployedwithin 6 hexes of their parent ship.

The Oryonggeo Heavy Cruiser is the primarytarget. Without that ship, the rest of the Korean forceis lost, unable to escape any follow up attacks.

If the Oryonggeo is destroyed EarthForce wins. The level of victory is defined by the EarthForcelosses. Loose the Omega and the victory is Minor.Loose the Oracle and the victory is Major and if onlythe Tethys are lost the victory is Total.

If the Oryonggeo escapes EarthForce has lost. The degree of loss is defined by number of additionalKorean ships that also escaped. One and the loss isMinor, two to three and the loss is Major. If four ormore escape the loss is Total.

EarthForce jumped in expecting to catch theKorean's flat footed. Unfortunately, permission forthe mission arrived late and the Koreans had alreadybeen tipped off. Instead of a surprised enemy, theEarthForce task force found the Koreans withweapons armed, fighters launching and a jumpengine building to charge. The Oryonggeo HeavyCruiser was the obvious target. Take out that shipand the rest would never escape. This fact was notlost on the Koreans who oriented their light shipsbetween the Oryonggeo and the EarthForce ships. The Korean fighters went in with orders to stop theThunderbolts at all cost. They succeeded in takingout several but were completely wiped out in theprocess. EarthForce Starfury's and the remainingThunderbolts were forced to run the gauntlet ofGoguryeo's and Janggeom's while Korean assaultshuttles and breaching pods ran interference. In theend the Oryonggeo managed to jump out with oneGoguryeo and one Janggeom. The EarthForcecommander was sacked for incompetence.

The war between the Interstellar Alliance and theCentauri Republic was short lived and never officiallyinvolved the Koreans or most of the other races. Theissue was the fact that Centauri forces seemed quite

willing to attack apparently neutral forces if theywere in any way affiliated with the InterstellarAlliance. At one point, a Korean convoy wasdiscovered by a Centauri raiding group, whiletraveling between jump gates. The Centauri movedin only to discover that one of the Goguryeo's wasactually a Dalnim Carrier, at which point the raid got awhole lot more difficult.

Terrain: Empty Space. Use a floating map.Centauri: 1 Demos in hex 3404 and hex 3606, 1

Darmoti in hex 3406, and 1 Vorchar inhex 3604. All ships are facing right, speed 10.

Korean: 1 Goguryeo Mk-I in hex 1805, 1 DalnimMk-I in hex 1025, and 1 Janggeom Mk-Iin hex 1422 and hex 1428. All ships arefacing right, speed 4.

Civilian: 4 Commercial Freighters. One each inhexes 1225, 1424, 1426 and 1625.Facing right, speed 4.

Fighters: The Koreans are equipped with SabreFighters, Hades Assault Shuttles. Onlythe Janggeom’s are equipped withLamprey Breaching Pods. The Centauriare equipped with Sentri Fighters.

The Centauri just jumped in, and the Darmoti’sjump engine will not recharge until Turn 16.

The Sabers' on the Dalnim are loaded with 1 Basicand 2 Class-Y fighter missiles each.

The Dalnim has 1 flight of fighters deployed. TheDarmoti has 1 flight deployed. Fighters are deployedwithin 6 hexes of their parent ship.

The Centauri are out to destroyer the civilianships and are not interested in fighting warships.Victory is defined by the number of freightersdestroyed. Zero and the Koreans have won. One andthe battle is a draw, two and the Centauri have aminor victory. Three and the Centauri have a majorvictory. Destroying all four results in a Total victory.

The Centauri forces attempted to bull rush intothe midst of the convoy and were heavily mauled, though none of their vessels were destroyed. Theymanaged to destroy one freighter and decideddiscretion was the better part of valor and jumpedaway.

AFTERWORD6

B5W SR-1Rev. 0

AfterwordDuring its existence, Agents of Gaming (AoG)

created a number of races and implied or breiflymention the presence of many more. Many of theraces that were created received only a minimaldescription of their background and included only afew ships. In addition, those ships that were providedwere typically confined to a specific time period orhistorical event (i.e. the Dilgar War).

This has left a number of holes in the definedraces and little, if any, definition for other races.Obviously, AoG planned to fill in the holes through aseries of products. It is equally obvious that AoGnever intended to define every race and fill everyhole. Despite their good intentions, AoG’s plans weremade mute with the loss of the Babylon 5 license andthe subsequent closure of AoG.

To that end, I have decided to generate a newproduct line know as Small Races (SR). Each SmallRaces Supplement is intended to define a singlerace’s history, its historical forces and technology andprovide a number of scenarios by which players cantry out these new additions to the Babylon 5 Wars.

Obviously larger races, which could possesshundreds of ship designs, stretching over centuriesof existence, would be all but impossible to capture ina single supplement, nor do I intended to try. Therewill be no Centauri size races and no significantadditions to the League of Non-Aligned Worlds. There will be no world beaters, no newoverwhelming technologies, and the races that willbe developed will not be destined to launch auniverse spanning war of domination. That beingsaid, the ships and technology that will be providedwill have a chance to fight and win against otherracial opponents. After all, who is interested in a racethat has no hope, will be stomped mercilessly intothe ground, and plays the role of the clay pigeon.

Based on these ground rules, I have producedand now offer the first Small Races Supplement. Itfocuses on the Republic of Korean Space Navy. TheRepublic of Korea (ROK) never joined the EarthAlliance, choosing instead to go its own way anddevelop its own naval forces. Never particularlylarge, the ROK-Navy was established to provide localdefense above the Korean peninsula and later toprotect Korean assets outside the orbit of Earth, bothin system and out. This is the story of the first SmallRace. Enjoy.

Most of the Korean time line for this product wasoriginally developed by Mark Graves when hegenerated the Earth Alliance time line for the RulesCompendium. The historical text in the Compendiumis a shadow of the total effort Mark put in. His worksincluded ship, fighter, and technology time lines forthe Earth Alliance, as well as all other humanorganizations. One of these organizations was theindependent Republic of Korea.

I have taken the opportunity to expand on hisefforts and move them to the next level. This includesgenerating Babylon 5 Wars units and providingadditional historical context. This product would notexist without his efforts.

ADMIRAL HAE-SUP SAT IN THE SHAMBLED REMAINS OF HIS HAEMOSU CLASSJUMP CRUISER. OVER THE CRACKLE OF RUINED CONSOLES HE COULD STILLHEAR FRAGMENTS OF THE ONGOING BATTLE THOUGH HIS COMMAND CHAIR.IT SOUNDED LIKE HIS FORCE WAS WINNING, THOUGH NOT BY MUCH.

COMMODORE KINKAID, ADJUTANT TO ADMIRAL HAMATO HAD SAID THAT THISWOULD BE A SIMPLE HOLDING ACTION. HE SAID THAT REINFORCEMENTSWOULD FOLLOW ALMOST IMMEDIATELY. BUT THERE HAD BEEN NOREINFORCEMENTS. AND THE DILGAR? THEY ACTED AS IF THIS WERE SOMEPENULTIMATE BATTLE, AND NOT SOME MINOR SIDE ACTION TO THE MAININVASION OF BALOS.

THE DILGAR HAD TARGETED HIS JUMP CRUISER FROM THE BEGINNING,APPARENTLY DRAWN TO ITS JUMP ENGINE SIGNATURE. IGNORINGEVERYTHING ELSE, THEY HAD DRIVEN THROUGH THE HEART OF HISSQUADRON TO GET HIM. AND THEY HAD PAID A HEAVY PRICE. HAE-SUP IDLYNOTED THE STATUS OF HIS CRUISER’S CRIPPLED REACTOR. IN 30 MORESECONDS THEY WOULD SUCCEED.
