Throughout the course you will explore all areas of primary curriculum including literacy, mathemacs, science, arts, humanies, health and physical educaon and technology, developing in-depth specialist knowledge in one of the priority curriculum areas. You will also be supported in your learning through Deakin’s Professional Experience Program. Professional experience At Deakin, we have a strong focus on professional experience to develop readiness for success. Our Professional Experience Program* is a crical part of your learning experience, ensuring you have the praccal skills needed from day one of your teaching career. Our professional experience team works with more than 1400 schools across Australia, arranging more than 7000 placements per year. You will gain hands-on teaching experience and be supported in all aspects of professional experience. You will have ongoing communicaon with staff to ensure that you have the best opportunity to develop as a teacher. * All professional experience placements are undertaken in approved schools within Australia. You can become more internaonally minded by selecng the Internaonal Baccalaureate Primary Years opon and compleng some of your placements in IBPYP schools. Primary subject specialisation Students will have the opportunity to develop advanced skills in a priority area of the primary school curriculum, which provides a compeve advantage for employment. Graduates intending to apply for registraon in Victoria should carefully check all requirements relang to this process specified at vit.vic.edu.au. The course is the only undergraduate teacher educaon program in Victoria to be accredited with the Internaonal Baccalaureate Organisaon to offer a recognised pathway for teaching in the IB Primary Years Program. Career opportunitiesThere is a strong demand for qualified teachers and graduate starting salaries for teachers are high compared to the graduate average. An increased demand for teachers has also resulted in improvements in teaching conditions, resources and career advancement opportunities. Entry requirements Year 12 applicants Prerequisites: Units 1 and 2: satisfactory completion in two units (any study combination) of General Mathematics or Maths: Mathematical Methods or Units 3 and 4: any Mathematics; and a study score of at least 35 in English (EAL) or at least 25 in English other than EAL.

Non-Year 12 applicants Refer VTAC entry.

Course breakdownTo be awarded a Bachelor of Education (Primary) a student must successfully complete 32 credit points comprising:

26 credit points of core units

80 days of supervised

professional experience

4 credit points of primary subject specialisation

2 credit points of electives

Students are also required to complete two units ELN010 and ELN011 as part of the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) in order to graduate from their course. These units do not contribute towards course credit. Refer to deakin.edu.au/teaching for a complete course structure breakdown. It is recommended that all students seek assistance from a student adviser.
