PROGRAMME VISIONThe Landscape Architecture Programme at UCT takes Cape Town as its laboratory.
Often criticized for being more Europe than Africa, Cape Town is really both, a city of conflicting realities located in a unique natural environment that is ever present. Based on a design research driven curricula, the programme is in a dialogue between contemporary international landscape architectural history and theory, and African cultures and innovations.
In our studios, and our important relationship with the profession, we pursue design innovation and quality in spaces regarded as too hard or hopeless, as well as those established types that need to be tailored to the unique publics of South Africa. Our students produce landscapes that provide rich aesthetic experiences, socio-economic catalysts and fun, safe places that hope to bring together the whole community. In doing so we create “landscape hybrids”, joining technology and ecological function in projects to positively contribute to the environment in innovative ways.
We produce future landscape architects for South Africa who can practice across the world, and actively pursue previously disadvantaged students to transform the landscape architecture profession. Being a small programme, we can foster individuals to become landscape architects by paying close attention to each students needs and in doing so, foster the unique contribution that each can make to the landscape of the African city.
Degrees OfferedThe BLA (Hons) is a 1 year degree for students with a first degree in architecture or landscape architecture. UCT also offers bridging courses for those who have related degrees (such as Environmental Science or Art) who would like to pursue a career in landscape architecture. Following the BLA (Hons) is the 1 year MLA which is the qualification required for registration as a Professional Landscape Architect with the South African Council for the Landscape Architectural Profession.
Josie Dalberg (MLA 2019)

PERFORMANCE AREA WALL
EXISTING TREESFicus microcarpa - smaller Ficus microcarpa - larger Rhus glauca - Blue Kunibush Myrsine africana – African Boxwood Salvia africana-caerulea - Blue African Sage
Stachys aethiopica - Wild Sage
Based on the characteristics of the Stachys aethiopica, it would be planted in designated planting spots in the slate-clad sloped walls and ‘cracks’ in the ground.
The re-integration of this indigenous grassy plant also ties back into the narrative of revealing history and would be planted behind the performance area wall.
These three shrub plants are the combined planting palette for the raised planters and planting behind the performance area wall. They would also be planted in the timber box planters due to their hardiness and ability to cope with the urban conditions of the city. They relate back to the narrative of revealing history as they fall within the historical vegetation group of the area , Peninsual Shale Renosterveld.
The use of aquatic plants don’t play a major role in the design as the water features are meant to receed in water level in order for them to evolve and reveal the slave names. The aquatic plants used would be in water areas with the deepest water level. The deepest water level is 1m
The extension of cobblestone pavers allowthe main axis of Longmarket street to be emphasised and then obstructed.
The steel sheets are allowed to rust over time to translate the narrative of the hard-ships the slaves faced.
Using timber elements influenced by the slave ships and speak to the narrative of slavery history.
Concrete surfaces for levelled areas and concrete slab pavers that reveal the planting around the screens.
Hammered steel sheets for the engraving of the slave names and the steel screens that cast the shadows of the names onto the ground
Eragrtois curvula - Weeping Lovegrass Juncus effusus - Common Rush Bolboshoneus maritimus - Sea Clubrush Cobblestone pavers - extension from Bo-Kaap Forged steel sheets Timber decking Concrete surfaces Hammered steel sheets
PLANTING CONCEPT -REMNANTS OF THE PAST The plant palette to be used is influenced by the original indigenous vegetation (Peninsula Shale Renosterveld) and re-integrating them strategically depending on which species would still be able to deal with the current conditions of the city. The chosen planting is to enhance the narrative of revealing layers by having them emerge from cracks in the ground, through the sloped walls and also as raised elements that enhance the experience of the space.
