REMOTE LEARNING IN THE BN PROGRAM DURING COVID-19

What will be different in the Winter 2021 Term? In keeping with the University of Manitoba’s plans, the Winter 2021 term of the Bachelor of Nursing Program will be delivered using primarily remote learning modalities with only clinical and skills courses being delivered in-person. This includes the mandatory New Student Orientation which will be delivered using asynchronous and synchronous online modules on UM Learn.

Remote learning courses will use a combined synchronous and asynchronous delivery.

It is important for you to be aware of the technology being used to deliver your courses as well as testing and exam approaches being utilized and your responsibilities in terms of access to technology. Please note that your instructors may be using a variety of approaches with tests and examinations (e.g., prohibiting access to resources during the test/examination, open-book, multiple choice questions, short-answer questions) and may be using different platforms or tools provided by the University of Manitoba or the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences to administer and monitor the test/examination (e.g., UM Learn, Respondus, or ExamSoft). The tools being used will assist us in ensuring that the integrity of tests and examinations is preserved. Be sure to inform yourself prior to the test/examination as to the approaches being taken in your courses.

As noted in the syllabus and on UM Learn, there are standard technology expectations for courses in the College of Nursing.

UM has outlined minimum technology requirements for students, please ensure you have access to these resources prior to the start of the Winter 2021 term: https://centre.cc.umanitoba.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Student-Connectivity-Recommendations.pdf

The UM bookstore has developed new processes to address physical distancing recommendations. For further information, visit https://www.umanitoba.ca/bookstore/textbooks/index.html.

Student advisors and counselling services continue to be available to students using phone and virtual modalities, information for accessing these resources are located at https://umanitoba.ca/faculties/nursing/Admin_Staff.html.

Congratulations and welcome to the Bachelor of Nursing Program.

GENER AL PRO GR AM INFORMATIONWhat is the minimum grade I need in my classes in order to pass? You must obtain a minimum grade of “C” in each course in the program. In the College of Nursing, a final grade of “D” in any course is considered a failure and must be repeated.

What happens if I fail the same course twice? A second failure in the same nursing course or a grade of “Fail” in any two clinical courses will mean that you will be required to withdraw from the program. If you are required to withdraw, you are ineligible for re-admission to the College of Nursing.

What are the expectations on clinical days? You must be available from 0700 – 2330 hours during clinical days (i.e., do not schedule other classes or personal appointments on these days). You must meet the minimum number of hours in practice as required by the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba.

Who do I talk to if I need a Confirmation of Program letter? If you require a Confirmation of Program letter for employment, car purchase, or other reasons, please contact: Registrar’s Office, 400 University Centre, 204-474-9420

What is Option in Aging? Choosing the Option in Aging gives you the opportunity to expand your area of study into five Faculties and gain special expertise in age-related fields. For more information, review the Academic Calendar and visit http://umanitoba.ca/faculties/nursing/undergrad/option_aging.html.

Consult a Student Advisor as you complete each Option in Aging course to ensure you meet the requirements of the option.

VOLUNTARY WITHDR AWALWhat if I’m considering withdrawing from a course? Immediately inform the course leader when you withdraw. Please ensure you are familiar with the College of Nursing academic regulations regarding voluntary withdrawals.

When does a withdrawal go on my student history? Withdrawing from a course during the Registration Revision period is not counted as a voluntary withdrawal. Only courses for which a ‘VW’ code appears on the Student History are considered voluntary withdrawals.
