INTRODUCTION
The papers of Lynn Morrow contain correspondence and research papers, with an
additional significant collection of late twentieth-century promotional and advertising
items. The papers reflect major areas of Morrow’s research on the southwest Missouri
region; Iron, Shannon, and Washington counties; Theodore Pease Russell and his
writings; and the writings of Silas C. Turnbo. The collection also includes a large
selection of promotional publications and ephemera associated with late 20th century
tourism in Missouri and Arkansas.
DONOR INFORMATION
The papers were donated to the State Historical Society of Missouri by Lynn
Morrow in many increments beginning on 13 January 2005 (Accession No. 1102).
Additions were made 30 April 2010 (Accession No. 1478), 11 June 2010 (Accession No.
1484), 21 December 2010 (Accession No. 1515), and 11 February 2011 (Accession No.
1519).
BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Lynn Morrow was born in Mexico, Missouri, in February 1946. He earned a
bachelors and master’s degrees in history at Southwest Missouri State University in 1975
and 1980 respectively. He was research historian for the Center for Ozarks Studies,
SMSU, 1977-1982, where he met and married Kristen Kalen in October 1981. As Kalen
and Morrow, they operated a historic preservation consulting firm, 1983-1990,
conducting cultural resource management surveys and preparing nominations for the
National Register of Historic Places for sites in Clark, Saline, and Washington counties in
Missouri. In July 1990, Morrow became supervisor of Missouri’s newly-created Local
Records Preservation Program at the Missouri State Archives, now a national model for
federal and state records associations. He retired in 2012.
Morrow has published extensively on the history of Missouri and the Ozarks
region of Missouri and Arkansas in scholarly journals including the Missouri Historical
Review, Gateway Heritage, Missouri, Folklore Journal, and others. He was consulting
and contributing editor to Ozarks Watch magazine, published by Southwest Missouri
State University, 1987-1990. He edited the White River Valley Historical Quarterly,
1988-2000. His larger works include Connecticut Yankee in the Frontier Ozarks: The
Writings of Theodore Pease Russell (Columbia: University of Missouri Press, 1988), and
The White River Chronicles of S. C. Turnbo: Man and Wildlife on the Ozarks Frontier
(Fayetteville: University of Arkansas Press, 1994; reprint, 1999), both co-edited with
James S. Keefe; and Shepherd of the Hills Country: Tourism Transforms the Ozarks,
1880s-1930s, co-authored with Linda Myers-Phinney (University of Arkansas Press,
1999). Morrow was the most prolific contributor to the Missouri Dictionary of Missouri
Biography (Columbia: University of Missouri Press, 1999).

The Correspondence series contains correspondence and miscellaneous papers,
related to Morrow’s various research projects. It is organize by either the person with
whom he was corresponding or the subject under discussion.
The 20th Century Tourism series consists of brochures, advertising materials,
promotional items, and miscellaneous paper ephemera (arranged alphabetically by
country).
The White River Valley Historical Society series contains papers and
publications pertaining to the society.
The second Correspondence series comes from a later donation by Morrow, but
is related to the earlier correspondence series. The papers here regard many different
research projects, personal letters/emails, and clippings of interest to the context of the
correspondence. Two sections contain large amounts of correspondence, one from Robert
Flanders regarding various topics of research and personal life. The other is between
R1000 Morrow, Lynn, Papers, 1964-2015 Page 3
Morrow and David Jacobson, his old roommate in the 1970’s. David went on to complete
his master’s degree in ancient near east studies and archaeology. This sub-series contains
samples of David’s journalism and socialist commentaries and Morrow’s responses;
insights into living arrangements in Beijing; challenges of having a child and raising a
family in Beijing; and perils and profits in establishing a new business in China. A deeper
summary of the correspondence is available in folder 362.
The Political Administration series contains correspondence, official documents,
event brochures, and court decisions that took place under the respective administrator
(most commonly the Secretary of State). The majority of these documents deal in relation
to the Missouri State Archives and the Local Records Program, where Lynn Morrow
worked.
The Jennings C. Morrow journal is a record kept by Jennings of a 1984 road-trip
from Texas to Alaska and back down to Mexico. The journal includes pictures, post
cards, and brochures from notable stops, along with maps detailing their stops and route.
The Research series contains subseries regarding various topics of Lynn
Morrow’s research interests. The first of these is a collection of primary source
documents containing records, advertisements, and receipts of Springfield, Missouri
corporations in the late 1920s to 1930s. This includes a beachfront subdivision that never
came to be, “Mozarko” and an investment/development company owned Albert O.
Haberman the husband of Virginia Young. This subseries has some damages to
documents from adhesive deterioration. Also included, are sources regarding
cockfighting, moonshine, Ozark history and culture, and research on the culture and term
“hillbillies”.
The Research series continues with the Pippin Place, a vacation resort in the
Ozarks founded by Dr. B. N. Pippin in 1915, and the Pippin family. This is followed by
correspondence and some research regarding Morrow’s publications on S. C. Turnbo and
“Shepherd of the Hills”. Finally, the series is closed out by a small collection of
miscellaneous research items and interests.
The Photographs series contains many photographs and negatives, some
presumably taken by Morrow himself, and some from others. These deal with areas of
interest to Morrow, mostly located in the Ozarks region.
