OWL Charter Academy – Crossroads Community Church, 4170 E. Amity Ave., Nampa, 461-1279.

OCA offers another education option for parents with children who struggle to learn.

“The school really was born out of a group of parents who really wanted spe-cific help for their children with learning disabilities,” Head of School Tony Ryff said.

OWL Charter Academy will begin the school year on Aug. 30 with the maximum allowed 180 students and waiting lists for every grade. Students in Kindergarten through fifth grade will start this year and the school will continue to add a grade for the next three years.

Ryff said the school will teach with a model called Project CHILD, Changing How Instruction for Learning is Delivered.n Teachers will be specialists in a sub-

ject area and work in cluster teams. Each group of teachers will work with the same children for three years.n Socratic questioning will be used as

an instructional tool; teachers will ask stu-dents questions to promote critical think-ing.n Methodology from the National Insti-

tute for Learning Development will be in-corporated to help students with learning disabilities become independent learners in the class room.

The school is chartered by the Nampa School District, rather than the state like most other charter schools.

For the first year the school has leased space from Crossroads Community Church, and plan to purchase permanent property

for the school by next year.Additional details can be found on the

school website, owlcharter.org.

Another Choice Virtual Charter School – 207 W. Georgia Ave., Suite 160, Nampa, (208) 249-1597

Students who search for a personalized education can look to Another Choice Vir-tual Charter School, set to open Aug. 23.

“Our focus is on learning differences,” Laura Sandidge, chairman of the school board, said. “Not just kids who may qualify for special education but also kids who might require a gifted and talented pro-gram.”

The Kindergarten through 12th grade school is a virtual school where a variety of different curriculums allow teachers to personalize their approach to each child.

“We design a program based on the in-dividual needs of the child,” Sandidge said. “Some kids need a different approach to be successful … We’re a little unique and a little different.”

Students can use computers provided by the school or computer labs to study. Social opportunities and vocational devel-opment programs will help students to stay connected with their peers.

“Our goal is to not be a home school, we are actually a public school with teachers providing the education service.” Sandidge said.

The school currently has 150 students enrolled, with space for up to 230.

“We do have some openings and we would love to have more students,” Sand-idge said.

Parents and students can find more in-formation at anotherchoicecharter.org.

1. In the days leading up to the start of school, put your children to bed a little earlier each night until they get used to the regular wake-up time to go to school. A well-rested and alert student learns better in school. Doctors say elementary and middle school aged students typically need 10 to 12 hours of sleep, while high school students need between eight and nine hours.

2. Make sure children eat a hearty breakfast of whole grain toast or cereal, fruit, and low-fat milk, instead of a sugar-filled breakfast. Hungry children do not learn as well as well-nourished ones, and sugar may make them hyperactive and cause them to actually eat more food at lunchtime. Schools usually serve well-balanced meals to children if you don’t have time to pack them a nutritious lunch. Low-income families can also sign their children up for the free and reduced-price meal program.

3. Throughout the school year, keep up all the fun physical activities, like bik-ing and jogging, your family did during the summer. Studies show that students who are physically active have a better ability to learn and achieve, and have better classroom be-havior.

4. Teach your children how to prevent the spread of influenza viruses. Keeping chil-dren healthy and ready to learn will prevent school dismissals due to a flu outbreak. Tell your children to wash their hands frequently with soap and water when possible, and al-ways cover their noses and mouths with a tissue, shirt sleeve, or elbow when coughing or sneezing.

5. Pack a flu prevention kit. The kit should contain tissues for coughing and sneezing, and individual packets of dispos-able wipes. For home, your kit should include a thermometer, decongestants, antibacterial soap, and fever reducing medications like ibuprofen or acetaminophen, but not aspi-rin. Remember, do not pack medications in your child’s flu prevention kit because they may be barred by your school’s drug preven-tion policies.

6. While you are packing your chil-dren’s flu prevention kits, throw in an extra package of tissues, pencils, pens, and note-books and donate them to teachers. Many teachers buy supplies with their own money for students in their classes.

7. Create a comfortable, quiet, well-lit place in your home specifically for your children to concentrate on their homework or reading. Plan a consistent time for home-work every day. This will help your children concentrate and absorb more of what they are trying to learn. Make note of any study-ing difficulties that may be caused by poor eyesight and may be solved with eyeglasses.

8. Limit your children’s use of mobile devices, TV, radio, and the computer. Turn them off while your children are studying. When they do watch TV, choose programs that are interesting and educational, such as “The Electric Company” or “Sesame Street” on your local PBS stations. These programs are also online and offer activity and educa-tional resources for children.

9. In these tough economic times, school budgets have been cut and some par-ents are out of work. To make the best of these difficult situations, consider volunteer-ing at school or starting a booster club if you can. People can actually gain valuable work experience from these activities that can be used to get a job. Plus, the school and stu-dents benefit from parents who are actively engaged in their children’s education.

10. Have high expectations for your children. Expect your children to do their very best each day. Hold them accountable for doing homework and working hard to achieve in school. When you expect your children to achieve at high levels they will rise to the challenge. If they believe they can achieve, they will achieve and nothing will make them, or you, more proud.

Advice for parents from the California Department of Education

C MY K

By Ginna ParsonsNortheast Mississippi Daily Journal via AP

When it comes to the lunches our children are eating at school, there’s good news and there’s bad news. The good news is school cafeterias have worked hard in the past couple of years to rid menus of excessive fat, sugar and calories.

The bad news is parents aren’t doing a very good job at home of packing healthy lunches for the kids who like to brown-bag it. They also aren’t setting good ex-amples at the dinner table.

“Last fall, I was a teacher’s assistant in a kindergarten class, so I saw sack lunches versus cafeteria lunches,” said Brenda Massey, direc-tor of food services for the Booneville School District. “You’d be amazed at the sack lunches full of sugar. I’m talking really unhealthy stuff.”

“Often, parents think that because a food car-ries a label with the word ‘fruit’ on it, it’s something good,” said Leanne Davis,

a registered dietitian at the North Mississippi Medical Center’s Wellness Center.

“Fruit chews, Fruit Roll-Ups, Strawberry Pop-Tarts, Capri-Sun Fruit Drinks, sweetened applesauce — these are not real fruits,” said Davis. “If it doesn’t say 100 percent fruit juice or if it has added sugar, it doesn’t count.”

So what’s a parent to do?

“Think about the Food Guide Pyramid,” Davis said. “Look at that pyramid and see what you could put in that lunch box. Could you get a whole grain, a piece of fruit, a veggie, some pro-tein and a little bit of fat? When I’m building a lunch box, I’m trying to think col-or, variety and texture.”

For instance, you might put a tablespoon of peanut butter on a whole wheat tortilla, top it with a sliced banana and roll it up. Put a small bag of pretzels with that and buy a carton of milk in the cafeteria and you’re good to go.

For the non-meat eater, you could pack 2 percent

cheese cubes, grapes, pret-zels, a granola bar and a bottle of water.

Or how about a salad made with spring greens, grilled chicken, black beans, corn, tomatoes, cu-cumbers and carrots?

“Make it as colorful as you can,” she said. “Put the dressing on the side and add a piece of fruit to round it out.”

Davis warned parents not to cram too much food into younger children’s sack lunches.

“A second-grader only needs half of a sandwich,” she said. “He only needs one or two ounces of sliced turkey, a half-slice of cheese, a half-cup of fruit and maybe a couple of carrots. You don’t want to

overwhelm the little ones, but you do want to make sure the older ones have enough.”

For older students and especially athletes, tucking an extra piece of fruit or a granola bar in the lunch box for an afternoon snack is also a good idea, Davis said.

What about those par-ents who don’t have the time, energy or desire to pack school lunches?

That’s where the school cafeteria comes in.

And the cafeteria can prepare healthy breakfasts and lunches all day long, but if parents aren’t doing the same in the evenings, students will get mixed messages.

“We have people who

pick their kids up from school at 3 o’clock and head to McDonald’s for a snack or they’ll grab a pizza on the way to the ball game,” Massey said. “We

have to start at home for this to work. School lunch-es aren’t the problem with childhood obesity. The meals they eat at home are the problem.”

Three Nampa School District elementary schools will have new principals in 2010-11.

Two elementary principals — Vicki Mc-Neal and Korey Mereness — left at the end of the school year.

McNeal is retiring from Sunny Ridge El-ementary School and Mereness is accepting a position with Treasure Valley Community College. Three schools will have new prin-cipals in 2010-11: Sunny Ridge, Franklin Roosevelt, and Ronald Reagan

Sunny RidgeSteve LaBau will serve as the principal

at Sunny Ridge Elementary School. LaBau has been a building administrator at South Middle School.

LaBau taught for eight years, first at Cen-tral and then Greenhurst. He was part of the district’s Creating High Performing Schools initiative funded by the J.A. and Kathryn Albertson Foundation. He moved into ad-ministration, serving as a building adminis-trator at the middle schools, the last several years at South.

Franklin RooseveltShawn Tegethoff will serve as the princi-

pal at Franklin Roosevelt Elementary School. She has been the principal at Ronald Reagan Elementary School.

Books are boring. Read-ing is hard. I hate to read.

Parents and teach-ers hear these words and cringe. How do you get a child who prefers surf-ing the Internet or playing video games interested in reading?

“Don’t define literacy too narrowly,” advised Jef-frey Wilhelm, a professor of English at Boise State Uni-versity. “Celebrate the read-ing they’re doing on the In-ternet or a video game and bridge that interest.”

Wilhelm has authored several books on engaging

kids in literacy (“Reading Don’t Fix No Chevy: Lit-eracy in the Lives of Young Men” and “Going With the Flow: How to Engage Boys (and Girls) in Their Literacy Learning”).

He has done extensive research in the classroom focused on students who seem reluctant to learn or engage in reading.

Wilhelm said parents and educators need to eval-uate their purpose in en-couraging a child to read. Is it simply because the book is required? Or is the main purpose to promote a life-time love of reading?

“We read the wrong stuff,” Wilhelm stated. “We

have kids read really com-plicated text that was writ-ten for adults. We have an allegiance to text instead of to reading.”

Wilhelm emphasized that in order to promote lifelong reading, we need to give kids the power of choice.

Children want to be able to make personal decisions about what they read, even if it is within a limited num-ber of selections. And keep

in mind that children will better comprehend what they are reading if they al-ready have some interest in the topic.

¿Habla usted español? Par-lez-vous français? Sprechen Sie Deutsch?

For a growing number of students, the answer is “sí,” “oui,” or “ja.” In an increasing-ly global society, parents and educators are recognizing the advantages of children learn-ing another language, even as young as preschool age.

High school students have long known that two years of foreign language study can boost standardized test and college admission scores. Eng-lish teachers recognize that foreign language learners also become more proficient in their native tongues. Further, a study published in the Janu-ary 2010 Scientific American Mind indicated that bilingual children who are given mis-leading clues solve problems more easily.

But the icing on the cake might just be that multilin-gualism also supports creativ-ity, according to Arturo Rodri-guez, an assistant professor of bilingual education at Boise State University.

“Being able to conceptu-alize and abstract in more than one language increases intelligence,” he said. “What this means is that bilingual or multilingual persons are more likely to paint, write, be musical, invent, explore and so on.”

On the other end of the

spectrum, the ability to conceptualize also is key to understanding math and sci-ence.

While these all are good reasons to study French, Japa-nese, German or a host of other tongues, they don’t re-ally get to the heart and soul of the issue, said Will Brown-ing, a Boise State professor of French and Spanish.

“Learning a language, even just up to a low inter-mediate level, can give you an appreciation for what it’s like to be someone else,” he said. “Students today are digital natives — we have to make sure they also learn to speak humanity.”

It is crucial that children recognize the universal aspects of other cultures, Browning said, in building the desire to reach beyond cultural boundaries.

Experts agree that while people generally are able to learn a language at any age, it’s much easier for young children.

“Children learn more read-ily under the age of 13,” said Browning, who has taught French and Spanish to his own children. “After that they usually enter a period of in-tense self-absorption where they are less willing to risk looking foolish.”

That’s key, he said, because learning a new language is fraught with opportunities to say the wrong thing or use the wrong inflection. Language

learners who are willing and able to put themselves out there, and to laugh at their own errors, are more likely to meet with success.

If you are thinking of en-rolling your child in a foreign language course, there are a couple of characteristics Browning suggests you look for in a teacher:

First, does the teacher bring the language to life in the classroom?

“An excellent teacher will engage in use of the language 80-90 percent of the time, even in a beginning class,” he said. “It’s important to fully in-volve both the novice and the expert.”

That’s not to say that stu-dents need to understand ev-erything the teacher is saying. They simply need to catch enough to follow what is go-ing on. It’s important to stay just one step ahead of what the student can comprehend.

“That’s how we absorb language,” he said. “For in-stance, a 1-year-old is not taught the language, he or she is exposed to it.”

Second, does the teacher captivate students’ attention using humor, drama, class dis-cussion and frequent interac-tion? If you’re not sure, sit in on a class and watch how the teacher interacts with learn-ers.

“It’s important how you present the language,” Brown-ing said, “as well as what the student can actually do with

it.”Other tips for introduc-

ing and strengthening a new language include watching DVDs in the new language, reading children’s books with lots of photos and indulging in your favorite magazines in the target lan-

guage (such as People). Not only does this keep inter-est high, it also allows for a peek into another culture.

“What happens in other countries matters,” Brown-ing said. “Learning another language is a window on the world … We must inte-

grate ourselves into a differ-ent way of looking at things. Then the “others” become people, not stereotypes.”

Not everyone completes his or her high school education — at least not in 12 years.

And — with unemployment rates still high — now is the time to stand out from other candidates for a potential job.

Earning an equivalent diploma, the Gener-al Educational Development or GED, is a wise choice and sometimes the only choice.

“Unless you have a GED or high school di-ploma, you may not even be considered (for a job),” said Linda Pelton, instructor for adult education classes at Four County Career Cen-ter.

“We have students who have wonderful skills and have lost their job and need to find another job. They have skills, but not the GED or diploma,” she said. “It’s unfortunate because when people entered the work force it wasn’t such a necessity — as it is now.”

Earning a GED involves passing a series of five standardized tests. The tests — social

studies, science, math, reading and writing — include questions which graduating high school students would be able to answer.

Not only does obtaining a GED help with chances of employment, it gives the student a sense of accomplishment.

“I was so excited that I finally finished,” said Jessie Wyrick of Montpelier. “When I got the certificate, I called my mom, my aunt, and was proud that I finished it.”

Wyrick received her GED in October 2009. She was unemployed and knew most places would not hire her without a diploma.

“I had been thinking about it for a while,” she said.

She started taking the adult education classes in early fall last year and took the test in October. Wyrick took classes two nights a week for about two to three weeks.

“I knew I needed more attention for math,” she said. “I did extra practice tests. It had been six years since school.”

She had not completed high school be-cause of a lack of credits and was encouraged

by family to finish the work.“What’s the worst it’s going to do? At least

try,” Peggy Freese, Wyrick’s aunt, had said.Wyrick encourages others to do the same.

The classes are set at your own pace and it’s not like at school with a timeline, she said. Through the classes, students can choose which subject to work on first or last.

“I chose to do ones that I didn’t have as much trouble with first and the other ones later,” Wyrick said. “Just do it; it will make you feel better about yourself and give you more opportunities.”

The mother of three looks to the benefits for her children as well.

“My kids, now they can’t say, ‘You didn’t finish, so why should I?’ They can be proud of me that I got the GED.”

Lori Bowen of Bryan went back to get her GED after a divorce; she needed employ-ment.

“I knew right away,” Bowen said. “Some-one I knew directed me straight to the

One-Stop and I knew I would need to get a GED.”

She had been home-schooling her chil-dren and felt the practice test was easier be-cause she was already up-to-date with what was out there for education.

“My kids kept wondering why I hadn’t graduated,” Bowen said. “My kids were hap-py that I got the GED.”

Bowen also said she encourages high school students to stay in school.

“I honestly think a high school diploma will get a job over a GED,” Bowen said.

Through this process of finding new em-ployment, Bowen has learned how important the GED is. Even people already working need their GED to keep their jobs, she said.

Parents should encourage readingTips to encourage readingHere are seven suggestions to help encourage reading at home and at

school:1.Have funLet kids read video game dialogue or sports magazines, comic books or

age-appropriate literature – whatever aligns with their interests. Encourage any kind of reading.

2.Come togetherRead aloud together, even as children grow older. Other ideas are to begin

reading clubs or to talk about stories from song lyrics, books, movies, TV and your own life experience.

3.Be an exampleIf you want your children to enjoy reading, they need to catch you reading.

If you are a teacher, don’t grade papers in front of your classroom — read.4.Expand your horizons

Novels are not the only text. Interest kids with books on tape, Internet reading, video game manuals and graphic novels.

5.Make it availableAlways have books and magazines lying all over the house and classroom.

Kids will read if materials are within reach.6.Offer choicesAs much as possible, let kids select their own reading. Have them go to

the library and search the shelves. Talk to the librarian about their interests; librarians love matching interests to text.

7.Find a purposeBoys, especially, want reading to have a purpose. Let them help plan a

vacation, decide on an issue, learn how to fix a computer or read manuals to help them excel at a video game.

The best way to engage young students in science and engineer-ing is by bringing the textbook to life.

From giving tours and demon-strating fundamental knowledge for inquisitive novices to provid-ing research opportunities for high school students, university labora-tories are becoming more acces-sible to all grade levels.

“Sometimes science can seem dry and lifeless to students, espe-cially if their only exposure is from a textbook,” said Michael Davis, a graduate student who works in the forensics laboratory in Boise State University’s Biological Sciences De-partment. “Outreach for primary and secondary education enrich-ment is one of the more interesting and important activities that we undertake.”

Davis, who is investigating DNA diversity in the Northwest’s immi-grant Basque population, said that students attending high schools with limited resources benefit most from outreach programs that allow their participation in lab exercises and expose them to a state-of-the-art research environment.

“In March, students from Salm-on High School visited. We set up a mock crime scene and let them practice dusting for fingerprints and loading agarose gel for electro-

phoresis of ‘crime scene’ DNA,” Da-vis said. “For a school with limited teaching resources, it was a great experience.”

Byung Kim, a professor in the Boise State Physics Department, has had high school juniors and se-niors employed in his lab.

Students participate in several different projects, including ob-serving plasmid DNA structures by atomic force microscopy and using scanning tunneling microscopy for observation of organic substances on metal surfaces.

Kim said that frequent inter-actions between professors and younger students benefit both par-ties.

“Interactions provide helpful information for the students about science at the college level and also help attract promising high school students to scientific programs,” he said.

So how can students get in-volved? It depends on the college or university, but many facilitate workshops, camps and internships. For example, Boise State’s Division of Extended Studies offers educa-tional workshops such as “e-Girls,” a two-day class for girls interested in engineering and computer science careers; “Measuring the Small,” a physics workshop that explores fundamental physical concepts behind measuring the character-istics of small scale-materials; and

“e-Camp,” which provides students the chance to explore careers in engineering and computer science with hands-on problem-solving.

Students also can contact colleg-es and universities directly. Fabiola Juarez-Coca, Boise State’s concur-rent enrollment director, believes all it takes is initiative.

“Students can find opportuni-ties on their own by contacting individual professors or the depart-ment chair,” she said. “Opportuni-ties are open to students with ini-tiative who are ready for something more interesting and are ready to learn.”

Whether assisting faculty re-searchers in the lab or being im-mersed in the basics of an undis-covered discipline, experience at the college level creates a connec-tion for high school students be-yond the present moment.

“The ultimate part of education for many of us is the experience of it: the touching, feeling, smelling and seeing — that drives your ideas and your thinking” said Merlin White, a Boise State biology profes-sor who has training in education. “Mentorship also plays a major role. Anything that can help bring those aspects together should be fostered.”

As students return to Idaho high schools this fall, they’re likely to find a grow-ing array of service-learning classes available to them. The courses mix volunteer-ing with academics, and to successful ends.

Tina Naillon, Learn and Serve coordinator for the State Department of Educa-tion, said that while high school students may have participated in volunteer service alongside class-

mates, service-learning courses up the ante. What they learn in the classroom is augmented by a service project that requires them to apply those lessons in real world situations.

For example, at Middle-ton High School — one of several high schools in the state recognized for its high quality service-learning projects — students coor-dinate a community holiday food drive. Art students de-sign and screen print reus-able grocery bags. Culinary arts and health students

assemble cookbooks with nutrition information that are distributed to Middleton area families. Speech stu-dents present ideas to city leaders.

“A lot of people think if a class goes out and does a service project it equates to service-learning, but that’s really just service,” Naillon said. “It needs to have that academic component to make it service-learning.”

Phil Kelly, a professor in the College of Education at Boise State University and a member of the Boise

School Board, said there are numerous benefits to com-bining service and learning. Students get to see what they’re learning in the class-room tied to the community around them, bringing con-cepts to life and hopefully making the learning process resonate. Community mem-bers and agencies receive valuable service.

“It’s also good just to have kids out in the community, to have some ownership in whatever they’re working on,” Kelly said. “You get more involved citizens with

kids who participate in ser-vice-learning.”

Students also are ex-posed to a variety of volun-teer opportunities that they likely would not otherwise pursue, and the initial trepi-dation they might feel is overcome through the as-signment.

Students can expect to see even more service-learning when they reach college.

Boise State has the state’s largest service-learning pro-gram, offering about 100 different courses each year.

During the 2009-10 academ-ic year, 2,327 students devot-ed 56,785 hours to serving partner non-profit organiza-tions in the Treasure Valley through the university’s Ser-vice-Learning Program. The students’ work was valued at $912,787 in economic benefit to the community.

“I expect service-learning to grow every year as stu-dents, teachers and citizens see its value,” Kelly said.

No more pencils, no more books, no more teachers’ dirty looks.

It is not the most em-pathetic of schoolyard rhymes. Does anyone (other than a teacher, per-haps) ever bother to think about what caused that dirty look?

Empathy. It is a funda-mental social skill that is central to a child’s ability to make friends and avoid conflict — even with teachers. It ranks right up there with paper and pen-cils as one of the most im-portant tools parents can give children in prepara-tion for their first day of school.

Yet instilling the abil-ity to see a situation from another’s perspective starts long before the little ones get on the school bus for the first time. In fact, that’s much too late. Chil-dren begin learning em-pathy from their first mo-ments by observing how their parents act toward them.

“There is evidence that parents who show em-pathy toward their own children have children who are empathetic,” said Linda Anooshian, a profes-sor of psychology at Boise State University. “By sim-ply showing children that you understand and care about their needs, you are modeling the kind of be-havior you hope they will have toward others.”

Elizabeth Morgan, an assistant professor of psy-chology and director of Boise State’s Family Stud-ies Initiative, said it’s when children become aware of themselves as individu-als and begin to grasp the notion that other people have thoughts and feel-ings completely different than their own – called the Theory of Mind – that

the lessons of empathy re-ally begin taking root.

“As a parent, we can label a child’s feelings for them, as well as the feel-ings of people around them, to help them under-stand what others are ex-periencing,” Morgan said.

And as children grow and emotions become more complex — well into adolescence — Mor-gan said parents should continue to talk with their children about their own and others’ emotions. Talking about experiences

with peers and grown ups helps youngsters learn to control their own emo-tions and understand out-side perspectives.

“Discussing emotions is something you can do at any age,” Morgan said.

While empathy is large-

ly a learned behavior, Mor-gan said some research indicates that we all have biological hardwiring that helps us experience empa-thy. For example, when a person watches someone doing some physical ac-tion, like jumping up and down, the neural path-ways in the observer’s brain that control jumping are engaged as if they are the one doing the jump-ing.

“The argument is that as you gain a deeper under-standing of yourself and others, neural pathways become accustomed to

feelings of empathy” and it becomes a more natural state, Morgan said.

Anooshian said that other children also have a big impact on a child’s view of the world.

“As a child gets closer to school age they can un-derstand more,” Anooshi-an said. “Have discussions about children with differ-ent backgrounds and help them to understand those differences and the chal-lenges others face.”

NEW YORK — Shopping for back-to-school items for your el-ementary school children, but afraid of a fight in the jeans aisle?

Parents who hope to keep a lid on spending can soften the edge by planning the back-to-school budget with kids, shopping togeth-er and teaching them how to sepa-rate needs from wants — and how to tell what’s a good deal.

“You need to involve them in the process so they understand the value of money,” says Lori Mackey, president of Prosperity4Kids Inc. in Agoura Hills, Calif., which of-fers material to teach kids about fi-nance. “These are life lessons that children will need.”

Here are five personal finance lessons that back-to-school shop-ping can teach:

1. SPEND WITHIN YOUR BUDGET: Parents should start by working with kids to set a limit on how much to spend on clothing and supplies. Jacob Gold, a certi-fied financial planner in Scotts-dale, Ariz., recommends using a debit card or cash so kids see how quickly the money disappears.

“They have to learn to live with-in the certain threshold,” Gold said.

2. KNOW WHAT YOU HAVE:

Go through your child’s closet to find out what fits and what doesn’t — and what needs to be repaired or handed down. Maybe that jack-et just needs to be patched or the shoes just need resoling. Consider recycling last year’s backpack if it’s still in good shape.

3. SEPARATE WANTS FROM NEEDS: Children may want five pairs of super-skinny jeans in dif-ferent colors, but parents should get children to ask themselves each time they want to buy some-thing: Do I really need that? Start by coming up with a list — before heading to the mall — of what’s necessary in the way of school sup-plies, shoes and clothes. Phil Heck-man, director of youth services at the Credit Union National Associa-tion, suggests letting children buy something extra with money left over after they buy those necessi-ties.

4. GET THE MOST BANG FOR EACH BUCK: Talk about seeking discounts and using coupons, and show teens and preteens how to compare prices online at sites like pricegrabber.com and dealtime.com.

But also remember that a 20-cent notebook may seem like a great deal — but won’t be if it falls apart in a day or it’s not the size your child’s teacher requires.

Examine products carefully with your kids to determine the quality and consider spending a bit more on a pair of jeans that won’t fade after washing a couple of times or a binder with strong enough rings to withstand nine months of jostling in a backpack all day, for example.

Children often want instant gratification, but parents can teach the importance of buying a little at a time. They may even be happy about waiting until after school starts to buy some accessories so

they’re sure what’s hip and what they need. This can help defuse some kids’ sense they’re entitled to new shoes just because it’s fall, Gold says.

“By explaining that a dollar is difficult to earn, you can take chil-dren from the mentality of entitle-ment to the savers’ mentality,” he says.

5. BE CHARITABLE. If you’re getting rid of clothes your kids grew out of, donate them to a lo-cal nonprofit so your kids learn about being charitable — and how

to get tax deductions. Bring your child along to drop off the clothes and talk about the people who will receive what you give. With older children, explain how to deter-mine the fair market value for their items by checking websites like salvationarmy.com.

“Children are naturally born givers,” said Mackey. “So if you can incorporate that into back-to-school, it will encourage that in later in life. It takes the emphasis off of them and puts it on another person who is really in need.”
