At age 16,Daniel first entered the service of the United States in Dec 1779.

Moved from thence to this county when young,shortly after married Polley Estep with whom he lived until the day of his death. Soon after his marriage joined theBaptist Church under Isaac Tillery. Some division arising. Buncombe Co., NCNotes: Daniel Ball was the 10th child of Sampson and Rosanna Norman Ball born in Iredell Co., NC. The first record of him after

leaving his father's home is the 1860 census where his wife is listed as Manerva A. and his children were Elijah and Mary born inabout 1856 and 1858 respectively. However, Eric Emory states that according to the marriage license Daniel's wife was namedNosvia A. Lewis. We also have his Civil War record found in the NC Troops Volume IV, page 85 as follows: "BALL,DANIELN., Private - Born in Iredell County where he resided as a carpenter prior to enlisting in Iredell County at age 30, Jun 13, 1861,for the war. Wounded in the left arm at Gaines Mill, VA Jun 27, 1862,and left arm amputated. Discharged at Richmond, VA,Aug 18, 1862 by reason of disability." His regiment was Co H, 4th NC Regiment. It was organized in Iredell County, NC andthey enlisted in Statesville, NC onJun 13, 1861. It entered service to the state and was ordered to Camp Hill near Garysville inNorthampton County where it was assigned as Co Hto the 4th NC Regiment. The records also show he enlisted with hisyoungerbrother, Thomas M. Ball, who went on to make Sergeant before he was transfered to the C. S. Navy. Evidently Nosvia/Manervadied between1860 and 1870 because by 1870 Daniel had married a girl twenty years his junior named Nancy Myers. Daniel andNancy were living in Iredell County according to the 1870 census with Elijah and Mary. Sometime between 1870 and 1880,Daniel and Nancy moved to Buncombe County,NC according to the 1880 census. In the 1900 they were living in the Big IvyTownship of Buncombe County where they lived until they died according to their granddaughter, Fannie Sue Roberts Stevens.
