4 Welcome back to DUSD and the 2014/2015 school year! We are all very excited for a new year and a new be-ginning.

Our principals and District administrators have been very busy this summer get-ting everything ready for our students. The mainte-nance department has been working to get all of our buildings in good shape for the upcoming school year.

There have been a lot of changes with administrators in our schools for this year. I believe that we have put together an excellent team and that we will continue to build on our successes and work hard to continue to im-prove wherever is necessary. We have many challenges in education today, but with the right staff in place, I believe we can overcome those challenges.

We have many exciting things planned for this up-coming school year. We will keep you informed as the

year progresses.DUSD is a wonderful Dis-

trict with great administra-tors, teachers, support staff, students and parents. I look forward to working with all of you in this coming year. I still believe that being an educator is the greatest call-ing in the world. And DUSD has many, many quality edu-cators!

Please know that you can contact me any time with any concerns that you may have.

I look forward to this new school year and am anxious to see all of our students re-turn on Tuesday, August 5.

Thank you for your contin-ued support of the Douglas Unified School District! To-gether we can all make a difference in the lives of our children!

Respectfully,

Sheila RogersSuperintendent

READ, READ READ!

Dr. Overman was born in Oregon but grew up in Southern California. She has lived in Douglas for 36 years. She moved here with her parents when they purchased a camera store. Over-man worked at the Douglas Camera for nine years before becoming a teacher.

Overman received her Associate’s Degree from Cochise College and her Bachelor’s from the University of Ari-zona.

“There’s only one school worth cheer for, my alma mater – U of A,” Overman said.

She went on to receive her Master’s in education from Western New Mexi-co University and her educational doc-torate from Walden University.

Overman says that the number one priority as a learning community is to

hope the student’s become academi-cally behaviorally and socially pre-pared to succeed out there in the real world.

“Whether it is in college, the mili-tary, trade school, or a career,” Over-manadded.“Weconstantlyanalyzeallavailable school data to try to provide the academic support our students need.”

Her personal goal is to increase her visits to the classrooms and to be more visible to staff and students.

“Our classrooms are where the work of the school is done, and where ad-ministrators need to be. I also want to spend more time in professional learning community meetings with our teachers,” she said. “They are the experts in their various fields, and I appreciate the experience and knowl-

edge each one of them brings into his or her classroom.”

Overman feels that DHS’ greatest obstacles are chronic absenteeism and lack of punctuality. Both of these issues affect grades and academic suc-cess.

“We absolutely must have parental support in getting kids to school and on time,” she added.

The DHS principal loves what she does.

“Although I take my position very seriously, it is important to me to have fun, too. Now that I have completed my first year at the high school, I can look forward to this coming year and feel that I have more knowledge about what to expect,” Overman said. “I have anamazingstaffandgreatstudents, and I enjoy going to work every day.”

Lisa Holland is the new principal at Paul Huber Middle School. Holland comes to Douglas from Bisbee.

She began her teaching career in Tombstone as an English teach and then moved to the Bisbee Unified School District in 2005. She taught there until she became a principal. She served as principal for BUSD at the junior and high school levels.

Holland attended the Harvard Graduate School of Educa-tion’s School Turnaround Leaders Institute this summer.

She is also currently working on her Superintendent’s Cer-tification which she plans to complete by July of next year.

“This school year, however, needs to be about getting to know the people I serve, the students, parents/guardians, and stakeholders of Paul Huber Middle School, and moving the school forward,” Holland said. “Everyone in Douglas has been welcoming and helpful, and I’m honored to be a part of this community.”

The U of A fan, is confident that her team at Paul Huber will come together as a true research community and hopes to move the school up one letter grade.

“Our work will always focus on what is best for our stu-dents,” she said. “I’m honored to be the principal at Paul Huber Middle School.”

Ray Borane Middle School principal Rudy Cota grew up in Gilbert. He went through the Gilbert school system. Cota took off a few years from school he eventually went back starting at Chandler/Gilbert Community College then went ontoArizonaStateUniversity.

Cota hopes his students will take pride in their school and education and also for the community to take pride in RBMS and its students.

“(He hopes) for our students to learn what they need to succeed when they go onto high school and beyond,” he added. “Our biggest challenge will be getting students to school on time and from being absent. Also, students and parents need to take studying and homework seriously. I think by working together with our families we can over-come these challenges.”

He loves being back at RBMS the staff is like one big family that welcomes all with open arms.

“The students here are just as welcoming,” Cota said. “RBMS has a rich history and a great future.”

Lunch pricesDUSD offers free breakfast to all students. Due to Federal

mandate, lunch prices have increased by 10¢ for all grade levels. The new prices are $1.45 for Preschool, $2.20 for El-ementary and Middle School and $2.35 for High School.

Payments may be made at the school office. Payments can also be made online. Parents can setup online account by going to douglasunified.revtrak.net, there is a four per-cent convenience fee for this service. To obtain students username and password, parents need to go to their as-signed school office and request it.

Students may bring their lunches and milk is available for $.35. Parents who pay are advised to pay every two weeks according to their paydays. Students are charged only for the meals that they eat. If they are absent or do not eat, they are not charged.

Free and reduced meal applications are available at the DHS Child Nutrition office, at every school office and are sent home at the beginning of the year. Parents are encour-aged to fill out applications for free and reduced meals even if the student does not eat the school meals, since the district receives many benefits when students qualify for free and reduced price meals. These applications must be completed every year. Students remain on the previous years free, reduced or paid status for 30 days after school starts. Students who have not applied after 30 days, will be charged for all meals thereafter. It is the parent’s responsibil-ity to fill out the application.

Students who get free and reduced priced meals are al-lowed one meal only. Second meals cost the full price.

Students are not allowed to charge more than five meals. High school students are not allowed to charge more than one meal. After students have exceeded the lunch charges, they will be provided a cold sandwich and milk for $1.50. It is the sole responsibility of the parent to monitor the student lunch accounts.

Lunch prepayments will be refunded only when student is transferring out of the district or at the end of the school year with a written note from the parent.

If you have any questions or concerns about the meal applications or food service, please call the Child Nutrition Office at 364-2447 X 2180.

Fernando Morales has been assigned as the new principal at Faras Elemen-tary. He is a Douglas native andaUniversityofArizonaSouth graduate.

“ G o W i l d c a t s…. B e a r down.” Morales said.

Morales received his bachelor’s in secondary ed-ucation from UA South then went on to the University of Phoenix where he earned his Master’s in Administra-tion and Supervision.

He has been with the Douglas Unified School Dis-trict for 13 years, teaching for 11 and two as the assis-

tant principal at Paul Huber Middle School.

“I plan to help Faras con-tinue to move forward in becoming an “A” school by working together with the staff and getting to know the students, families and community members that Faras serves,” Morales said. “Education is such an impor-tant and vital part of a child’s life. As an educational com-munity, I know we can pre-pare our students to be col-lege and career ready, and there is no challenge we cannot overcome together.”

Morales is excited and

motivated to be the prin-cipal at Faras. He looks for-ward to working with the state and getting to know the students, their families and the community.

“I believe working to-gether with staff and par-ents there are no obstacles and challenges that we can’t face head on,” he said. “It is important we are all involved in our children’s education no matter what challenge we face, whether it be in math, science or any of the subjects our children are expected to master.”

Douglas Native Melissa Rodriguezwillbeservingas the Joe Carlson princi-pal. The Bulldog graduated from Douglas High School in 1998. For her first year at Joe Carlson her goal is to build a school culture and com-munity that is conductive to student achievement.

“I hope to instill a school community that works col-laboratively, builds relation-ships, and shares decision making to create a positive school environment,” Ro-driguez said. “Starting inany new position, the major obstacle is getting to know your staff and building rap-port with them. Change is

always difficult and it takes time to adjust to new lead-ership and new expecta-tions.” Rodriguezisveryexcited

to be the principal at Joe Carlson.

“I am very lucky to have such a nice building but more so I’m excited to work with awesome individuals that do what’s best for kids,” she said. “I foresee an awe-some school year.”

The few teachers and staff members she’s had the priv-ilege to meet over the sum-mer have given her a sense of great school community.

I moved to Douglas from Chandler when I was fteen. I didn’t think therewould be any employment opportunities for me after I completed school so I had planned to move back to Chandler when I turned eighteen, but then I heard about the call center and I decided to apply.

I’ve been here for over two years and if I can be successful here anyone can. The work is not hard but then again I love working with people and talking to all of my co-workers. There are a lot of bene ts to working here. For example, sinceI started working here my communication skills have gotten so much better. I’m much more polite than I used to be and I’ve found that I get more respect using the customer service techniques I’ve picked up here.

Most importantly, this job provides me the means to support my family andpay the bills. I have a two-and-one-half-year-old son and supporting him is the main reason why I work so hard. I take advantageof all the overtime that is o ered and my lastpaycheck was over $1200! That reallyhelped out a lot! That’s why workingat A.C.T. has been the best choice for me.

Claudia Leon is the principal at Sarah Marely. She is a Douglas native and received her degrees in education from the Univer-sityofArizona.

“I am excited for our staff and students as there are many things to look forward to as we begin the new school year,” Leon said. “Our school goals this year include im-plementing Beyond Textbooks at all grade levels. The Beyond Textbooks framework will allow our teachers to access and use curriculum calendars, essential standards, “unwrapped” documents, and formative as-sessments to guide lesson planning, drive instruction in the core academic subjects, and achieve mastery learning.”

Leon believes that obstacles she will face is balancing the needs of the students with the demands on education. She appreciates the parents support and understanding in

the change process. “Being the principal at Sarah Marley is

truly rewarding. My greatest satisfaction comes from working with the teachers and support staff to provide the students with a positive and nurturing learning environ-ment,” Leon said. “The students’ academic growth and well-being are of the upmost priority. As we begin an exciting new school year, the staff and I look forward to working closely with our students and parents.”

Welcome back Class of 2014-2015

George Montano has been a school administrator since 1989. He officially retired from Douglas Unified School Dis-trict in 2006. But after only five years of retirement life he was asked to return as principal at Stevenson for six months while the district recruited a principal but the experience had been so positive he agreed to remain.

“I can honestly say that after three and a half years as principal at Stevenson School, it has been by the best expe-rience for me in my 19 and a half years as a school adminis-trator,” he said. “We have a great staff and they are willing to meet the challenges in educating our students. Our parents are supportive and students are willing to meet the chal-lenges for academic growth. I have very much enjoyed being principal at Stevenson School.”

Montano is a Douglas High School graduate; graduating from DHS in 1972. HeattendedCochiseCollegeandNorthernArizonaUni-

versity earning a degree in secondary education in History and Physical Education.

“Mr. Armando De Lucas offered me my first teaching job with Douglas Unified Schools,” he added. “During the sum-mers, I worked on my master’s degree in school administra-tion at Western New Mexico University. I taught at Douglas Junior High (Ray Borane Middle School) and coached base-ball at DHS before becoming a school administrator.”

Montano has also served as the vice principal at Huber and DHS, athletic director at DHS, principal at Sarah Marley School and principal at DHS.

“I came out of retirement in January, 2011 as principal of Stevenson School,” Montano said. “I also have experience in teaching G.E.D. classes in the evening for Douglas Com-munity Schools and currently teach Introduction to Educa-tion (EDU 201) at Cochise College during the evenings.”

Graduating from NAU has not stopped the beloved prin-cipalfrombeinganArizonaStateUniversityfan.

“I have been an ASU fan since the late 1960’s as I watched the Sun Devil baseball teams win three national titles in a five year span under coach Bobby Winkles. Coach Winkles held a baseball clinic, in 1969, in Douglas which I attended

and he brought some of his players with him,” Montano said proudly. “I followed some of those players as they played in the major leagues (Reggie Jackson, Sal Bando, Rick Monday and Larry Gura). Also, Frank Kush was successful with their football programs and also followed ASU football through-out the years. As a result, I’m an ASU fan.”

His goal is to continue to improve academic achievement in preparing students for life long skills.

Each year he has a great staff and each year they want to provide the students with many opportunities to meet their individual needs for them to reach their highest potential, Montano said.“Wealsoemphasizetheimportanceofdisplayinggood

character in our daily lives,” he added. “We have the sup-port of parents and family members and we look forward to the new school year to continue to improve on student academic growth and displaying good character.”

Obstacles are no challenge in Montano’s life, he greets them with open arms and eyes.

“Life is full of obstacles and our attitudes are important in dealing with obstacles. Obstacles are challenges and we all have been challenged in life but what is important is how we deal with challenges. As educators, we have a mission and we are held accountable in educating the children of this community. Our staff as Stevenson School team is pre-pared and committed to meet this challenge while teach-ing to the Essential Elements of Instruction while modeling the pillars of character.”

Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power im-balance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time. Both kids who are bullied and who bully others may have serious, lasting problems.

In order to be considered bullying, the behavior must be aggressive and include:• AnImbalanceofPower:Kidswhobullyusetheir

power—such as physical strength, access to embarrass-ing information, or popularity—to control or harm others. Power imbalances can change over time and in different situations, even if they involve the same people.• Repetition:Bullyingbehaviorshappenmorethan

once or have the potential to happen more than once.Bullying includes actions such as making threats, spread-

ing rumors, attacking someone physically or verbally, and excluding someone from a group on purpose.

If you feel you are being bullied tell someone parents, teacher an adult you confine in.

It is the policy of the Douglas Unified School District to strive for a learning environment for students that is free from harassment. The district will take appropriate and ef-fective actions, within defined legal parameters, to achieve this goal.

If a student believes he or she has been subject to ha-rassment under this policy, the student should report the behavior to a teacher, counselor, school nurse/health as-

sistant, or school administrator. For the purpose of this policy, harassment may, depend-

ing on all of the circumstances, be defined as:• Verbalorphysicalthreats;or• Wordsthatbytheirveryutteranceinflictinjuryor

tend to incite an immediate breach of the peace; oro Note: “Fighting words,” as defined by the United

States Supreme Court in Chaplinsky v. New Hampshire, 315 U.S. 568, 571-72 (1942).• Useoflanguagethatisplainlyoffensive(examples

of such language may include racial or ethnic slurs or epi-thets; lewd, vulgar, or obscene language); or• Physicalactsofaggressionorintimidation;or• Verbalorphysicalconductrelatingtoanindi-

vidual’s race, ethnicity, religion, gender, or disability that is sufficiently severe, persistent, or pervasive to (i) limit a stu-dent’s ability to participate in or benefit from the education program, or (ii) create an intimidating, hostile, or offensive educational environment.

o Note: The procedures set forth in the administra-tive regulations to Governing Board Policy JB, “Equal Educa-tional Opportunities,” shall apply for all harassment matters involving verbal or physical conduct relating to a person’s gender that is sufficiently severe, persistent, or pervasive to limit a student’s ability to participate in or benefit from the educational program or to create an intimidating, hostile, or offensive educational environment.

Students involved in harassment activities shall be sub-ject to disciplinary consequences, which may range from conferences to suspension from school or expulsion from the District, and may include involvement with their par-ents in school or District counseling sessions regarding ha-rassment. Repeated acts of harassment shall result in more severe disciplinary action by school administrators, District administrators, or the Governing Board.

Employees involved in harassment activities shall be sub-ject to disciplinary action, which may include, but not be limited to, suspension or dismissal.

Any employee who personally observes harassment-type activities toward a student(s) and reasonably suspects that such behavior is harassment, or who receives a com-plaint of student harassment that the employee reasonably suspects warrants or requires further action, shall promptly report the activities or the complaint to the school principal.

If evidence suggests that conduct complained of under this policy also constitutes a crime, the supervisor shall stop the investigation and promptly report to the appropriate law enforcement agency. If evidence suggests the conduct complained of under this policy constitutes child abuse, the incident should be reported according to the Admin-istrative Regulation JLF. The requirement to report abuse applies to situations in which a child is the alleged abuser, as well as to situations in which an adult is the alleged abuser.
