Background InformationMitosis and Meiosis

Page 2: Background notes mitosis and meiosis

Mitosis

A type of asexual reproductionMitosis is a type of cell division where two

new daughter cells are formed with identical DNA.

There are 6 stages to mitosis.

Page 3: Background notes mitosis and meiosis

Interphase

Chromosomes are copied (# doubles)

Page 4: Background notes mitosis and meiosis

Prophase

The cell begins to divide.

Centrioles (or poles) appear and begin to move to opposite ends of cell

Nuclear membrane dissolves.

Page 5: Background notes mitosis and meiosis

Metaphase

Chromosome pairs line up in the middle of the cell.

Anaphase

“Tug-of-War” stageChromatids (or pairs of

chromosomes) separate and begin to move to opposite ends of the cell.

Telophase

Two new nuclei formCell membrane

begins to pinch!

Cytokenesis

The division of the cytoplasm!

During cytokenesis the cytoplasm is split evenly between the two new cells.

Animal cell and Plant cells differ during this part of telophase….why? What structure does a plant cell have, that an animal cell doesn’t?

Page 9: Background notes mitosis and meiosis

What is the difference between animal cell and plant cell mitosis?Plant cells have a rigid cell wall,

animal cells do NOT!Because of the cell wall, plant

cells are NOT able to “pinch”…instead a cell plate forms between the two new daughter cells.

This cell plate will become the new cell wall that separates the two daughter cells!

Meiosis

A type of asexual reproduction that produces egg and sperm cells that are needed for sexual reproduction!

Page 11: Background notes mitosis and meiosis

Compare Mitosis and Meiosis

THE DNA IS COPIED BEFORE THE NUCLEUS DIVIDES in both mitosis AND Meiosis!

Page 12: Background notes mitosis and meiosis

Contrast Mitosis and Meiosis

MitosisUsed for GROWTH AND

REPAIR.

ONE nuclear division

Produces 2 IDENTICAL DAUGHTER CELLS

DNA is copied ONCE, NUCLEUS DIVIDES ONCE.

MeiosisUsed only for making

EGG AND SPERM CELLS.

TWO nuclear divisions

Produces 4 DIFFERENT DAUGHTER CELLS

DNA is copied ONCE, but NUCLEUS DIVIDES TWICE!
