Background The previous versions Phase 2010: The current version Phase 2011: Online Access Phase 2012: 3D Planning Tool Outlook

Agenda

SGM 2010 – Fribourg (19./20.11.2010)

3 Federal Office of Topography swisstopoSwiss Geological Survey

Mont Terry Rock Laboratory Mechanical, hydrogeological and geochemical test

site for property investigation of the Opalinus Clay Start in 1996, operated by swisstopo Experiments carried out by partners (EU, US, JP, CA)

The role of the drill holes Most of the experiments are carried out in drill holes Every drill hole has been exactly surveyed The complete set of drill holes (~900) is accessible

through the Borehole Information System

Background

SGM 2010 – Fribourg (19./20.11.2010)

Data acquisition & processing is purely manual Data mapping, QC, update and 3D generation

Quality control is purely manual Manual check for errors by visual control

Consequence Entire workflow is time-consuming, defective and

cost-intensive Updates on an annual basis

Borehole Information SystemPrevious versions - status up to mid-2010

Data specificationPhase 2010 - Acquisition & processing

Data acquisition Drillcore mapping Survey using cadastrial

methods ( coordinates) Drillcore metadata ( phase,

location, fluid etc.) Drillcore analysis data

Data processing Survey & metadata: Text editor Drillcore maps and fotos: HTML

page Analysis data: HTML page HTML pages: Linked in text

editor to drill coreSGM 2010 – Fribourg (19./20.11.2010)

Data storage Several text files CSV

Quality control Defined rules to check data input

- Grammar, coordinates, physical locations etc.

On-the-fly semi-automated cross-check using drop-down menus

Entire integrity check using F9-key

Data specificationPhase 2010 - Storage & quality control

Driver Search engine to be a more dynamic, user-driven GUI

Queries using well know operators (e.g. AND, OR etc.) Annual update cycle should be shortened and eased

Consequences Migrate Borehole Information System to a database Distribute data in a portable environment (e.g. memory stick) Search engine gets more functionality

Organisation Principle dataset: Extranet platform of the Mont Terri project Updates by automatic importation of database dumps

Borehole Information SystemPhase 2011 – Online access

SGM 2010 – Fribourg (19./20.11.2010)

Borehole Information SystemPhase 2012 – 3D planning toolDriver Available rock volume for new experiments is finite New drill holes must not interfere, need spatial independency

planning is paper work no entire overview possible Planning purposes: On-site localisation of collapsed boreholes Assurance at the real beginning of the experiment only

Consequences Partners plan their future drillholes in a full 3D environment Planning of new projects gets more reliable

Organisation Partners get a user account Data not visible for other partners

SGM 2010 – Fribourg (19./20.11.2010)

Borehole Information SystemSummary & outlookUsability & functionality Front-end: Functionality increases with the user interface not

changing that much Back-end: Semi-automated data acquisition workflow for

higher data accuracy and more up-to-date data

Benefit for partners (starting 2011) More detailed search queries Planning of new experiments gets faster & very easy General update intervals get shorter online access Data update gets very fast and easy
