HOW TO CREATE HYPERLINKS IN E-PAPER

BACKGROUND

There is a wide-spread wish in the newspaper- and the magazine business, to be able to add click-through links to ads, so that this link will be able to be active in the e-paper version of the publication.

E.g. it could be an ad recieved in PDF, placed at a page in at editorial system, and later published as a printed publication as well as a electronic document (’e-paper’) available via a internet-browser or an application.

It is already common today, that newspapers and magazines are published to the readers via these multiple media.

Until now, it was not possible for the creative designer to ad the wished URL directly in the ad without a lot of manual work

THE SOLUTION

In order to to embed the click-through URL in the ad, this solution provides the possibility to store the actual URL in a specific position of the metadata (XMP) of the PDF-file.

To help the enduser - and to make it more user-friendly - some scripts has been created that are able to be implemented in Acrobat, in Adobe InDesign and / or Adobe Illustrator. Thereby it will be possible for the creative designer through few clicks to add an URL to the file.

The scripts will, whatever application in place, store the URL in this IPTC-field:

IPTC Contact Websites (Iptc4xmpCore:CreatorContactInfo/Iptc4xmpCore:CiUrlWork)

Creative designers, who use other applications than mentioned above, will be able to execute with the same effect, by writing the URL in place in this field, and it will be possible to manuallu add the URL in this field via Adobe Bridge.

CONTENT OF THE PACKAGE

To make it easy to add a URL to an ad, scripts have been created for use in Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe Acrobat.

Please remark, that distribution of JavaScripts e.g. via e-mail might fail. We advise to download directly from the source to the computer to install the scripts.

ADOBE INDESIGN

While a document is open in InDesign choose the command ”Add advertisement hyperlink...” on the bottom of the File menu.

This opens a dialog, that ables you to write the URL. Please remark, that the URL will allways start with ”http://” or ”https://” (without quotation marks) and of course a valid URL. We advise to test it first.

If the document already contains a URL, this will be shown in the field, with the possibility to overwrite it.

When confirming with OK, the URL will be stored in metadata of the InDesign-file. When you produce a PDF, the content of this field will be embedded in the similar field of the PDF’s metadata.

ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR

With a document open in Adobe Illustator, choose the command:

File -> Scripts -> AddURL_ai

This opens a dialog, that ables you to write the URL. Please remark, that the URL will allways start with ”http://” or ”https://” (without quotation marks) and of course a valid URL. We advise to test it first.


When confirming with OK, the URL will be stored in metadata of the Illustrator-file. When you produce a PDF, the content of this field will be embedded in the similar field of the PDF’s metadata.

ADOBE ACROBAT DC

If the action is added ”Quick Tools” ( see this ”how to” at page 5), click at the tool in the list of actions.

If the action is not added, click at the fane ”Tools”. Select the cate-gory ”Customize” and click for the symbol ”Action Wizard”.

Now choose the action ”Add advertisement URL” from the list of actions at the right of the screen.

Whatever you choose ”Quick Tools” or above method, the following palet of actions will open::

If a document is already open in Acrobat, this will be shown in the list of files, which should be handeled.

Click on ”Start”.

This opens a dialog, where you are able to write the URL, which should be used at the electronic ad. Please remark, that the URL will allways start with ”http://” or ”https://” (without quotation marks) and of course a valid URL. We advise to test it first.


When confirming with OK, the URL will be stored in metadata of the PDF-file.

ADOBE INDESIGN

1. Close the application InDesign.

2. Place the Script-file ”AddURL_Indd.jsx” in the Program folder of InDesign at this path:

Adobe InDesign CC 20XX -> Scripts -> startup scripts

3. Start InDesign

When InDesign is started again, there is added a new menu item at the bottom of the menu File. The new submenu-item is named ”Add adverticement hyperlink...”. It is only active when a document is open in InDesign.

With a document open in InDesign, choose the command ”Add advertisement hyperlink...”.

This will open a dialog where you have the possibility to type the URL.The URL must start with http:// or https://

When confirming with OK, the URL is stored in the files metadata in the field: Iptc4xmpCore:CreatorContactInfo.

If this field already contained data, this will be shown in the dialog. You are able to overwrite with new content.

You will be able to see the information as well by going to File -> File Info...

ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR

1. Close the application Adobe Illustrator

2. Place the script-filen ”AddURL_ai.jsx” in the Program folder of Adobe Illustrator at this path:

Adobe Illustrator CC 20XX -> Presets -> en_US ->Scripts (language dependent)

3. Start Illustrator

When Adobe Illustrator has started again, therewilll be a new menu-item at File -> Scripts. The new menu item is named ”AddURL_ai”. The script will only work, when a document is open in Illustrator.

With a document open in Illustrator, choose File -> Scripts -> AddURL_ai.

This will open a dialog where you cantype the URL. The URL must start with http:// or https://

When confirming with OK, the URL is stored in the files metadata in the field: Iptc4xmpCore:CreatorContactInfo.

If this field already contained data, this will be shown in the dialog. You are able to overwrite with new content.

You will be able to see the information as well by going to File -> File Info...

ADOBEACROBAT DC

1. OpenAcrobat DC

2. Choose ”Tools”, select the category ”Customize” and click at the symbol for ”Action Wizard”.

3. A new set of tools is displayed. Click at ”Manage Actions”.

4. In the following dialog, select ”Import” and the file ”

Add advertisement URL.sequ” will be imported.

5. Click on ”Close” and please remark, that the new sequence is now added to the list of installed actions at right:

If you wish to make this action permanent available, this is possible via the ”customize Quick Tools”.

After that you can run this action either by choosing it from list or - if added to the Quick action tool - by a simple click on the icon for the action in the tool-list.

In both cases he following panel is opened:

If a document is already open in Acrobat the filename is shown over files that are needed to be handeled.

Click on ”Start”. This will open a dialog where you can type the URL. The URL must start with http:// or https://

If this field already contained data, this will be shown in the dialog. You are now able to overwrite with new content.

You will be able to see the information as well by going to File -> Properties - and select ”Additional Metadata...”
