Background toHTMS Our strength is our flexibility
Hampshire Tobacco Machinery Services was established in 1986,
drawing together people whose combined commitment to the
tobacco engineering industry - both primary and secondary -
totals more than 100 years.
The launch and interest of the company initially was for the
supply and manufacture of machine spare parts and
re-engineered secondary machinery, as both individual machines
or as complete maker / packer combinations, together with an
after sales service for spare parts.
Today, the principle interest of the company is the supply of new
packaging equipment, centered on Hard Box, hinge lid packaging
machinery, where its development started in the early 1980's
through the experiences of rebuilding machinery with our former
company. The company - John Payne Engineering - supplied all
major companies with the service of rebuilding their existing
machinery to a new level of demand which covered cigarette size
and collation together with the need for innovation, updating to
a new generation which had new concepts for operation. Suchcompanies as B.A.T., RJ REYNOLDSand the IMPERIAL GROUP
were all part of our clients
With this experience of upgrading and converting HLP Hard Box
machinery, we found it necessary to introduce a new type of Hard
Box packing machine to suit the pattern of a higher speed, with
the necessary efficiency to sustain long term production.
Although there are many companies engaged in this field
worldwide and many larger than HTMS through their association
with the O.E.M.'s - our Managing Director can uniquely claim to
have been at the vanguard of those to introduce the concept of
re-engineering to the industry.
Our interest started within the tobacco industry during 1974,
where we were invited to assist a number of UK and European
production manufacturers to size change and develop existing
machinery, raising it's efficiency and converting size in accor-
dance with market trends, where both cigarette length and
diameter created a interesting challenge in engineering for such
conversions to take place on the clients individual machines.
This background of experience gave our team an education in
the need and direction to support all technical requirements
where the format could be from a 5's Hinge Lid Pack, up to a 3
row 30's Cigarette Pack, adding a third dimension of cigarette
length, up to 120mm.
It was through these years of 1980-1995 that we developed the
XL packer to it's current level of operation. We have in recent
years assisted in turn key projects with Santa Fe Natural Tobacco
of North Carolina USA, Mastermind Tobacco of Kenya and
Similar Tobacco of Canada, with one of the last interesting
exercises being to rebuild and supply for Northern Iraq. Here we
give you a short overview of the situation.

XL515 HLPA new design and manufactured machine, based on the HLP2,but incorporating over 50 new features that have beendeveloped with our experience in the field of cigarettepackaging since 1974. The XL HLP comes with a total packageof complimenting machinery from a Semi or Fully AutomaticTray Unloader through to Stampers, Wrappers, Boxers andOverwrappers all designed to work as a group of machines.
The machine can be set to pack a wide range of collations from5 to 30 cigarettes and in length up to 120mm. We also have aproven record of packing super slims 5.4mm cigarettes
The packer is designed for maximum efficiency at speeds upto 225 packs per minute depending on machine type andlayout. This has been made possible through extensivedesign features such as:
• Sealed scroll or conjugate cam gearboxes to controlcritical movements
• In house designed twin roller wall cams usingharmonic movements
• Helical gears and sealed roller bearings forsmoother running
• Replacement of reciprocating movements withconstant flow whenever possible
Machine control is by a state of the art PLC managementsystem complete with HMI (Human machine interface) whichcollects data and reports faults at the end of each shift.Adjustments to machine parameters such as speeds andcontrol timings are done through this interface.
Two versions of the XL HLP are available
XL Enterprise with straight to bed filler section, suitable for1O's and 20's still with full detection of ends, but at a morecost conscience price and a slightly slower top speed.
XL Advantage with conventional turret and hopper capable ofall collations and able to run to the full speed dependant onlocal conditions.
Also available are kits for many of the modification areas thatare easily fitted to a customer's machine in theproduction factory.
If a customer has a donor machine available or requires arebuilt machine this is also available with many of theupgrades available to be fitted during rebuild to suit thecustomers requirements.
We can supply a complete range of change parts to suit anyproduct both for our machines and the original HLP 1 and 2

XL400 StamperHTMShas designed and manufactured a stamping machinethat can work as a stand alone or part of a group ofmachines where stamps are applied prior to the UnitWrapper. The machine can accept packs from end, front orrear or via a feed chute. Stamps can be placed on the front, rear or side of the packet and across the mitre join. Ifcrossing the mitre a serration system is available to easethe opening of the packet.
In operation stamps are removed from a fully adjustablemagazine and transferred via a two stage vacuumwheel where glue is applied precisely with electronicallycontrolled non-drip nozzle guns. Size, number and positionof dots and lines are easily controlled.
Packs are delivered under the application wheel via aflighted belt and then into a low temperature heateddrying tower
Another flighted belt takes the packets through aninspection and ejection stage before exiting the machine inthe correct orientation to be wrapped
Machine control is by a state of the art PLCmanagementsystem complete with HMI (Human machine interface)which collects data and reports faults at the end of eachshift. Adjustments to machine parameters such as speedsand control timings are done through this interface

XL536Turret WrapperHTMS has designed and manufactured a high-speed linear
motion, turret-wrapping machine, providing an excellentquality wrap with high efficiency at medium speeds.
The machine can wrap soft and hard packs from a range ofupstream equipment and will accept packets from end, front or rear of the wrapper.
Machine control is by a state of the art PLCmanagementsystem complete with HMI (Human machine interface)which collects data and reports faults at the end of each
shift. Adjustments to machine parameters such as speedsand control timings are done through this interface
The machine has twin bobbin holders allowing fast change
of bobbins up to 330mm diameter. The Tear tape applicatorwill handle bobbins up to Jumbo size. Change gears controlcut length and a servo drive is available for printed filmregistration
Packets are delivered via a flighted belt rotating pusherscarefully take the packet from the belt, delivered through
the film into a six stage gearbox indexed turret.
Twin retracting heaters seal the lateral seam and the mitreends are formed in an adjustable folding deck on the exitfrom the turret.
Finally side sealing in achieved with moving heated sidebands that are independently driven ensuring that allpackets are taken from the heated zones without waste
should the wrapper stop.
Should the end user require an Ice Glass finishdifferent shrink tunnels are available dependant on thefinal specification.

Carton BoxerThe Carton Boxer can accommodate the packaging of soft
packs, or, HlP packets of any denomination. Such packets
can be collated to any rectangular shape required. There
can be offered a maximum width through the machine to
accommodate a carton length of 370mm, with a height of
50mm, to cover a packet length of up to 100mm. This would
accommodate a stick formation for American side-seam
and European top-lid opening cartons.
To cover the packaging of the international style
carton - using a flat 20's double bundle cigarette packet,
or, similar using 5 high x 2 stacks to give a collation size
of 200 wide x 105 deep x 110 high.
The Carton Boxer is flexible to give a full range of sizes
and packet configurations, with the ability to pack up to
40 cartons per minute, subject to the detail.
The machine can be used independently as a free
standing hand fed unit via an Infeed Conveyor,or, linked
to any Upstream/Downstream equipment to fulfil a 'soft'
or 'hard' box cartoning function.
Machines are managed by a small PLCwhich can be
interfaced to any given system of Siemens/
AIIan Bradley/ etc.

From the 3000 to the 6000 series machine, covering
speeds from 3000 sticks per minute (150 packets) up to
6000 sticks per min (300 packets).
The range for cigarette packaging can be engineered to
give the same flexibilities as the Hard Box Packer, covering
cigarettes size from 6.5-8mm diameter and cigarette length
from 70 up to 120mm. The extreme sizes within the range
are subject to specialist engineering.
The basic set-up for the range is with the use of Laminated
Aluminium Foil and Tissue, with Cut Label and Cut Stamp.
Options for reel fed systems, covering both Label and
Closure Stamps are available.
We offer the 5000 series Packer with built-in modifications
of the 6000 series machine t 0 maintain a speed of 250
packets per minute. With the use of the Triple Plunger
operation in conjunction with the modified Hopper, thus
enabling the machine to deliver 3 collated bundles in one
plunge into the Arbor Turret.
Due to increasing demand, we are covering more stock
items of spares to suit the range of the AM F/SASIB series
of Soft Packers.
To identify spare parts which vary from the traditionally
known spares, is the greatest problem. The serial number
of machinery, complete with part number & sub-assembly
item number would advise full information for HTMS to
respond quickly.
