HISTORYThe lands that today comprise Croatia were a partof the Austro-Hungarian Empire until World War I. In1918, the Croats, Serbs, and Slovenes formed a king-dom known after 1929 as Yugoslavia. Following WorldWar II, Yugoslavia became a federal independent Com-munist state under the strong hand of Marshal TITO.

Although Croatia declared its independence from Yu-goslavia in 1991, it took four years of sporadic, butoften bitter, ghting before occupying Serb armieswere mostly cleared from Croatian lands. Under UNsupervision, the last Serb-held enclave in eastern Sla-vonia was returned to Croatia in 1998. In April 2009,Croatia joined NATO; it is a candidate for eventual EUaccession.

ZagrebZagreb has a well-developed and efcient public trans-port system that consists of trams, buses and trains.

The tram network operates 24 hours a day - from4AM to 12AM there are 15 “day-time lines” (tram lines1-9, 11-15 and 17), and from 12AM to 4AM there are4 “night” lines (tram lines 31-34) which cover most of

the day-time lines on a reduced (around 30-40 min-ute) frequency.

Occasionally, buses replace trams on night lines. Tramline 3 does not operate Saturdays, Sundays and onpublic holidays. There are maps of the tram lines on

almost every stop, so if you know the nearest stop toyour destination you can simply gure out the shortesttrip while you’re at the stop.

As for the buses, there are 113 day-time and 4 night

lines. ZET buses cover the area outside the city cent-er, as well as some neighboring towns that adminis-tratively belong to Zagreb county. The buses use thesame ticketing system as the trams and cost 12kn.

MUST SEE

It is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Its build-ing had started in 1431, and it was nished in 1536due to Turkish wars. Several successive architectsbuilt it completely in stone in the 15th and 16thcenturies, both in Gothic and in Renaissance style. The interlocking stone slabs of the Cathedral’s

roof were damaged when the city was shelled bySerbian forces in 1991.

The damage has since been repaired. It has abeautiful baptistery worth seeing it, and the cu-riosity is it has been built with stone only, with-

out any kind of binder. Another one is 72 humanheads carved in stone on the external part whichbelong to unknown individuals, passers-by, sailors, merchants and peasants who posed as the cathe-dral was being built. Statues of Adam and Eve are

also curious; Adam is covering his breasts, and Eveis covering not her breasts, but her stomach.

DubrovnikThe Old Town can be comparatively difcult to navi-gate on rst appearances, as it really is a warren oflittle streets.

That being said, some of these signs appear to beeither intentionally misleading or woefully out of date. For example, there is no ofce of any bus company

within the Old Town, despite what the signs may say.The city is completely pedestrianised and easily smallenough to get around on foot, some of the streets area little steep though.

If you are not staying in the Old Town, it’s relatively

simple get there by bus, as just about every one leadsto the Old Town. However, it might be advisable to geta timetable just in case. It costs 12 kn (just over €1)for tickets bought at any kiosk,or 15 kn bought on thebus; ticket valid for 1 hr. At selected kiosks (including

There is a wide range of restaurants in the Old Town, mostly offering a very similar menu of local seafoodand some meat dishes. The cuisine may not be veryimaginative, but it is usually of good quality and veryfresh.

Restaurants can be crudely separated into (slightly)

cheaper tourist-trap places, and more expensive butrst class gastronomic restaurants. There are a fewpizzerias, mostly wood-red and quite acceptable. TheKraš chocolate sold at stores is delicious.

Remember that Dubrovnik, more so than the rest of

Croatia, is well aware of its status as a tourist hot-spot. Rents for restaurant premises are high and con-sequently the prices on the menus reect this.

Note that in the off peak season of November-March

nearly all the top-end restaurants close, leaving only ahandful of desperate tourist trap enterprises operatingand still charging high prices. You can however still eatwell and discounts can be negotiated.
