LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Dear Readers,

We have chosen as our theme for the month - ‘Season of Mists and Mellow Fruitfulness’ from John Keats' poem, ‘To Autumn’, c. 1820:

Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness,Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun;

Conspiring with him how to load and bless

With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run;To bend with apples the moss’d cottage-trees,

And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core......

By now you may have been enjoying the abundance of fruit and vegetables which are produced every year at around this time. As well as those things which we grow in our own gardens there is always a free harvest which we can gather from our English hedgerows. Blackberries, Elderberries, Rose-Hips, Sloes and so on, you will probably know many more than us. These can be used in recipes for delicious desserts, jams and chutneys but also for herbal remedies and drinks. Chutneys and pickles made now should be matured and ready for use at Christmas, as will such things as Sloe Gin.

(We would always advise not to eat anything from the hedgerows unless you are sure of what it is)

October is also the time to make traditional Christmas puddings and Christmas cake if you want the flavours to be fully matured.

We hope you enjoy this edition of the magazine If you do we are Brian and Amanda Manley

if not we are Mr and Mrs Smith

Just GardeningIf you had a glut of tomatoes this season try making some tomato ketchup. You'll find a recipe in a good cook book. Or the more culinary gifted you are try making some tomato chutney. If you have an allotment garden you've probably lifted the last of your potato crop. Having completed this task, just leave the soil roughly turned over in large clods of earth. The soil will over winter. Kindly old Jack Frost will do his work for us along with the winter rain which will break down the soil into a fine tilth. This is particularly good for heavy clay soil but not so important on sandy soil.Don't forget to continue dead-heading your flower beds you may just encourage a late flush of flowers. By removing the spent flower heads of perennial plants you should see flowers right through to the first heavy frost. The plants are tricked into producing more flowers in order to reproduce more seed. Also, by dead-heading your flowers, pay attention to the flower borders as well and this will improve the general appearance of your flower beds at this time of the year. Now is the time to start thinking about planting next years spring display of bulbs. There is a huge choice in Nurseries and in specialist grower catalogues.  Along with Daffodils and Narcissus try a deep red Tulip planted in a bed of multi-coloured wallflowers. The weather has just started turning colder, leaves are beginning to drop, we've not had much of a summer this year so it wouldn't be a surprise to me if we have an early Autumn. So when the leaves start dropping on your lawn just pick them up in small quantities to start, it will make the bigger job seem a little smaller. Don't leave the debris on your lawn as this will encourage disease and dead patches on the grass. If you want some Christmas Colour place three Hyacinth bulbs in a terra- cotta pot, close together but not touching, cover with a multi- purpose compost, leaving the tips of the bulbs just showing above the surface. Place in a cold frame outside, when the green shoots appear take them inside and enjoy the flowers. Happy Gardening............Norman Parcell

The scheme is a non-religious volunteer based group that assists the community from within. There are thirty-five volunteers covering the three villages, all have been CRB checked and are covered by Public Liability Insurance. To date the scheme has received nineteen calls for assistance since it started on 21st May 2012. The majority of calls have been for help with transport to hospital, both Bury and Ipswich, and many local journeys. Prescriptions have been collected and gardens tidied on a one off basis. The AGM took place on Monday 10th September, in the community room at St. Mary’s Church, Bacton. The following committee members were elected for the year ending September 2013: Chair Person - Hilary Smith, Secretary - Mike Hall Treasurer - Mark Rowbottom, Committee Member - Bernard Gant for assistance call 07980 948641 from 9am to 5pm Monday to Fridays, though assistance required can be outside these times. Please call if you need any help with transport, befriending, letter writing, form filling, minor repairs, pet help, collections, including prescriptions and one off garden tidying. An application to build a single storey extension at Dandy Hall, Willow Lane, was supported by the Parish Council as was the application to build a two storey extension to the rear of Lime Tree Farm, Parkers Road. The application to demolish two dwellings at 1-2 Broadway House, Broad Road and erect 4 dwellings was supported by the Council provided that concerns over vehicular access onto Blacksmith Road and Broad Road are satisfactorily addressed. It has been brought to the Council’s attention that some hedgerows in the village are becoming overgrown which is causing problems especially at road junctions. It would be greatly appreciated if property owners would trim back hedges on a regular basis.Dr. Dan Poulter our MP is due to attend the Community Café at Cotton Village Hall on Saturday 27th October between 10.00am &12.00 noon. The next scheduled Council meeting is to be held on Wednesday 3rd October at 7.30pm in the village hall.

In MemoriamJohn Miles 14th June 1958 - 8th August 2012

John was buried at St Andrews Church Cotton on August the 23rdThe funeral service was held at Cotton Methodist Chapel

We were all shocked and saddened by the sudden and unexpected demise of John Miles who was our friend, very well known and a respected member of the

community.A Cotton man born and bred, who had a genuine love of the land and machinery,

especially tractors of which he had rebuilt many.Kind and humorous, always there to give a helping hand, coping with our tears as he

helped with the burial of our dogs, a friend indeed.

John was well loved as the enormous attendance at his funeral proved.John will be sorely missed, he has gone - but will never be forgotten.

Our September meeting took a historical turn as our speaker for the night was Rosemary Muntus who makes costumes for the re-creations at Kentwell Hall. The competition was ‘Dress as a Tudor’ and two of us (President and Vice-President) took up the challenge. We therefore spent what turned out to be a wonderfully warm ‘summer’ evening dressed in yards of wool! We were treated to a powerpoint presentation which ran through a potted history of the Tudor Kings and Queens going into the Elizabethan period. It was fascinating to find out more about the elaborate construction of many of the costumes. We heard that it could take 5 hours for a gentlewoman to get fully dressed, even with the assistance of a great many servants. Rosemary is a very accomplished seamstress and brought with her some extremely complex and authentic outfits which we were able to examine closely. Our next meeting will be our annual birthday party on October 1st. Unfortunately this meeting will not be open to visitors as it has to be booked. On Nov 2nd there will be a Soup and Puds in Bacton Village Hall. Tickets available from Bacton Post Office. Amanda Manley President of Bacton and District W.I

CHURCH NEWS

A Word from the RectoryDear All,

Well, the harvest’s in, and it’s a much better harvest than was feared, back in March when the ground was cracking and the rain seemed to fall on everyone except us! Spare a thought for those farmers in the real drought areas of the world, for whom the rain never did come this year... As the evenings draw in, there’s plenty going on in the benefice. Bacton and Wyverstone celebrated Harvest on the last day of September, but for disappointed Harvest fans, all is not yet lost – Wickham Skeith has Harvest Evensong at 6.30 p.m. on Friday 5th October, and on Sunday 7th October there are Harvest Festival services at 9.30 a.m. in St. Andrew’s Wickham Skeith and at 3 p.m. in St. Nicholas’ Chapel, Gipping. If you’ve never yet set foot in Gipping Chapel, an unspoilt fourteenth-century gem with some amazing eighteenth-century wall painting, why not join us then? There’s a guest speaker from our Harvest charity, Tools With A Mission, so if you have any unused hand tools that you’d like to send to a useful new life in Africa, do bring them along.A joint Church and Chapel fellowship group is meeting on Thursday mornings in Old Newton Chapel all this month to look at St. Luke’s Gospel together. This is the book that gives us some of the best-loved stories about Jesus, including the time when he was twelve and his parents lost him on the way back from Jerusalem, not to mention the stories Jesus himself told – the Prodigal Son, the Lost Sheep, the Good Samaritan – and Luke, being a doctor, was particularly interested in Jesus’ work as a healer too. We start at 10.30, but there’s coffee on offer from 10 a.m. and you’d be very welcome to come along any time.On October 12th and 13th, Bacton will be celebrating a whole year of SNAP, our Neighbourhood Outreach Project, with a party in the Community Room – full details elsewhere in this issue. Also on October 13th it’s the Cotton Gift Day, and St. Andrew’s will be serving coffee and croissants from 10 a.m. to noon, with a chance to catch up on the brilliant conservation work done on our unique South Porch carvings, plus the Friends of Cotton Church’s latest project, to restore the amazing outdoor Belfry gates to their original glory. Then on Thursday October 18th there’s a Quiet Day at Brettenham Village Hall led by Canon Philip Banks, the Precentor of St. Edmundsbury Cathedral – full details and booking forms are available from the Rural Dean, Rev. Barbara Bilston (her phone number is 01449-781253).Oh yes, it’s all happening in the middle of Suffolk!Yours with love

Liz Varley

YEAR OF FAITHThis month marks fiftieth anniversary of the beginning of the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council, which was opened by Pope John XXIII at St Peter’s Basilica in Rome on 11th October 1962. All the Catholic bishops of the world met together in four sessions of several months each year until December 1965. The Council, known as Vatican II for short, was the most momentous event in the life of the Catholic Church for centuries. The Italian word aggiornamento was taken by many as the best way to express its purpose, to bring the Church up to date, seeking to present the eternal truths of the Church’s faith in the modern world and looking at the problems confronting Catholics and all Christians in these times. The Catholic Church throughout the world will be celebrating a Year of Faith, running from 11th October until the Feast of Christ the King 2013, to mark the anniversary and seeking renewed inspiration from the teachings and spirit of the Council for the Church’s mission today. Donations to Missions for Seafarers in memory of

Terry Spalding Terry has always been interested in the welfare of seafarers. His father, and many of his relatives, were fishermen in Lowestoft and Terry was well aware of the harsh and dangerous conditions they often had to face. During the war his father was in the Merchant Navy and was three times torpedoed on different ships and each time went missing for a time and was presumed dead. Terry had been a local rep for many years both in Bacton and, previously, in Berkshire. He fundraised for the mission, selling their products at church and village events, and whenever opportunities presented themselves. During recent years he was active in encouraging people to knit gloves and balaclavas for seafarers which he passed on to the missions at Felixstowe and Harwich where both his sister and niece were ships’ visitors for a time, boarding vessels in port, chatting to seafarers and trying to help with problems or things they needed. Both Terry and I frequently attended the annual seafarers’ service at St Paul’s Cathedral, and met one of the Chaplains at Harwich. The mission was very dear to Terry’s heart and I know he would be delighted that donations at his funeral raised a total of £364.85. Thank you to all who donated. Hazel Spalding

Harvest TraditionsThe word Harvest comes from the Anglo Saxon word for

Autumn, ‘Hearfest’ gradually it came to mean the season of reaping and gathering the crops; the corn in the meadows, the berries from the hedgerows, the goodies from our gardens and allotments.

! The full moon closest to the autumnal equinox is known as the Harvest Moon and the Sunday closest to the Harvest Moon is when the end of the harvest was celebrated with suppers and church services, everyone pleased to have the food for the winter safe in the barns, no supermarkets in those days!

! It is thought that the first church to celebrate the Harvest Festival as we do today was at Morwenstow in Cornwall in 1843, when the church was decorated and the hymns that have now become our traditional harvest hymns, like ‘All Things Bright and Beautiful’ were first sung.

London 2012 brought talented people to Britain. But did you know this happens every year? Thousands of bright young men and women come to study at our universities. Sadly, most have no contact with British people outside the campus. Some miss their families; many are curious about the real life of Britain. That’s why HOST arranges for them to spend a day,

weekend or 3 days at Christmas as guests in hospitable homes. This is a great opportunity to get to know someone from another country, and help them to feel welcome. As a volunteer host, you could enjoy introducing a student of your choice to your way of life and perhaps to their very first Christmas. Please call David on 01508 483 838 or see www.hostuk.org.
