Welcome to the half-time break! By now, you probably feel a bit more like this session is your home-court. After the field was officially opened on Thursday afternoon, you got to warm up, get to know the playing field and bond with your team mates during Teambuilding. You were

provided with a variety of ener-gising and muscle-building food and drink at Eurovillage before the kick-off for Committee Work today. Tonight, after going home from an evening of peace, love and happiness, maybe you will lie awake in bed for five min-utes before falling asleep to re-flect the first half of this match and set your aim for the second one. If you do so, keep in mind that this game - much like this creative playground of an issue - has many very different things to offer. Maybe you will leave the playing field happier if you have spent time exploring in-stead of having focused on the final score. Winning the game is a short moment of glory - enjoy-ing the game to its fullest, learn-ing from it and growing yourself may last for many matches to come. Peace!Your Editorial Team,Franzi & Leo

Let’s startThe Opening Ceremony and

The 14th National Session of EYP Czech Republic was set off in grandiose style at the Elisabeth Bass, where a number of speakers gave it an exciting start. František Škaryd, the Chairman of the Committee on Culture and Education of the city of Carlsbad, started with an inspiring speech about looking at the things around you in order to find solutions. He was followed by Natalie Štastná from the European Parliament’s Czech infor-mation office, who held an informative speech about the importance of the EU in the Czech Republic. After that, the jury members Dorota Šuránová and Martin Šindelár explained the selection criteria for the session before Matěj Kinovič of-fered some words of gratitude to all of those who had made the session possible. To conclude that exquisite list of speak-ers, all that was left was for the president to officially open the session. And so the

session, as well as the day, was off to a good start. A day that would be highlighted by the Czech village. For some it is more or less just a dinner with a really broad selection of foods, for some it is time to learn and taste something new from other cities and it could be also an awesome start of a party. And at our Czech village on Thursday night, you were able to find all of those points of view. The evening began with performances which introduced each delega-tion to the others. After establishing the new autonomic country Stra-konice by terrorists with semtex produced in the Arabic city Pardubistan we heard stories about Milevsko, had a lesson of modern architecture from Brno and we had the chance to travel back in time thanks to the delegation from Carlsbad. During the bombastic performances we were amazed by a romantic guitar song by Gymnázium nad Kavalírkou and we also had time to enjoy Peace and share an Egg.When each delegation had presented itself, we could move to the tables to eat and drink all that great stuff brought along by the delegates. Tasty Czech beer, potato pancakes, different kinds of meat and a really huge number of sweets such as homemade pies, cookies and a sweet network of the Prague Underground could be found in all corners of the room. When we had filled our stomachs with all that great stuff we moved to the EYP Café thinking:

Oh it is what you do for me - Oh and all humanityOh we are where we wanna be - On the NSC of the EYP

Interview Kristýna Stejskalová

When I think of Beáta, the first word that comes into my mind is miracle. You cannot confound her with another person because when she enters the room, things start to come into motion. It was quite difficult for me to arrange an in-terview with her because everyo-ne needs her. There were people coming to her for help every two minutes because she always knows what to do. When you first meet her you might think that she is furious or bitchy, but I can honestly tell you that I have never met a person who is so willing to do things for others and is doing it with such a great amount of love. It may seem quite strange that the-

re is no official Head-Organiser for this session: As Beáta told me, it is really important and more than one Head-Organiser was needed to create it. Therefore, the Board of the EYP Czech Republic decided to take the responsibility for this ses-sion and they handled this task at their best. For this reason they cho-se Matěj Kinovič, Bětka Rybáková, Nela Gábrišová, Lucie Lotková, Daniel Steindler, Tereza Tupá and Martina Konečná to help them in the team of Organisers.I also asked the Organisers why they decided to do this job and was impressed by their answers: Even though for most of them it was the first opportunity to join a session

Page 7: Bad Carl - Issue 2

as an Official, they already want to reciprocate the effort their Organi-sers made when they were Delega-tes. They also agreed that it is an opportunity to improve their orga-nisational skills and to bear great responsibility. When I asked Beáta why they did the session in Carlsbad, she told me that the city had been chosen for two reasons. First of all, Carls-bad is a historically and culturally important city with a great amount of interesting places. Secondly, the Board wants to bring EYP to smal-ler cities all over the Czech Repu-blic. This is also the reason why there were sessions in Pilsen and Pardubice and, as Beàta confirmed,

the next one is planned to be so-mewhere in Moravia. This session would not exist without the help of the Commission Representation Office, the city of Carlsbad and the Grandhotel Pupp that provides the venue for the General Assembly. As to the question what the three most important characteristics of a good Organiser are, she replied: Responsibility, initiative and ins-tinct. As I suspected, her favourite position in the setup of an EYP ses-sion is in the Organisers‘ team even though it sometimes drives her crazy. And her message for the de-legates? Enjoy the session as much as possible and stay with us in EYP Czech Republic.

Fight for your culture

Just read the topic and you will immediately understand that each one of you is directly linked to this huge problem. To make things even more interesting, you could also consider that if this problem is not solved very soon you will be facing serious hardships in your own future. The European Union itself has been dealing with this matter at least since 1999, when the Bologna Process was initiated, a programme aimed at promoting the mobility of students, teachers and researchers within the EU. Though it might not have lead to a final solution of the inadequacy of the European Educational system to provide graduates with the right skills to meet the requirements of the European Labour Market, it was a first step in the right direc-tion. The European governments steadily continued working on this issue and in 2010, the European Commission also included several goals regarding the education sys-tem in the 2020 Strategy. When I was a Delegate, the aim to solve problems that had not been resolved by the European institu-tions scared me a little bit. And what about you? Are you worried right now? Are you afraid that dur-

ing the General Assembly the dis-cussion of any topic will be poor or too challenging? You really shouldn’t be.Firstly you need to keep in mind that a good group of people with adequate preparation can discuss every topic fruitfully. So, if you haven’t yet, just read through the outstanding preparation booklet put together by our beloved chairs team. Secondly, whenever you are afraid of not being able to come up with significant ideas (especially when dealing with these kinds of topics which seem impossible to cope with) just remember that these are the moments when the EYP really shines: When it comes to creativ-ity and thinking out of the box. So even if the Members of the Euro-pean Parliament might not find a solution, we as members of the Eu-ropean Youth Parliament can still do better than them.Just be free during the discussions, think bravely and go for creative thinking! You will see great re-sults. Take this opportunity and make the most of it! Express your-self and bring up your opinion, because back home you might not get a chance to.

ACTA is a buzzword many of you will have come in contact with or have heard about lately. If the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agree-ment is ratified, it will very likely affect our everyday lives. Yet, most people do not know ex-actly what ACTA is about, what is fact and what is myth. This is mostly due to the fact that the ac-tual text is very difficult to under-stand. At the same time, ACTA oppo-nents are stating their opinions and fears all over the internet as if they were facts. It is rather dif-ficult to figure out what exactly is true, which outcomes are just speculations and which are just plain lies. Nevertheless, it is of utmost im-portance to be well informed about an issue in order to make up your mind about it. It is easy to see ACTA from a disapprov-ing point of view, as many of us are afraid that it will keep us from using the internet the way we do now. But ACTA is about

more than not being able to use background music with your self-made videos or streaming your fa-vourite TV show online anymore. There is also the general question of what exactly you can own the property rights for or even if you should be able to do so at all, the possible violation of fundamental rights like the freedom of speech and more practical questions, for example if ACTA will be affecting the legitimate trade with generic drugs, the cheap alternatives to their branded counterparts and often the only way to get special medical treatment for people in poorer countries. While a new regulation is much needed, it has to reflect that the internet is a fast developing me-dium. Rules that might seem reasonable today could easily be outdated in a few years time. New regulations concerning intellectu-al property rights need to keep in mind that things have profoundly changed in the last years and that they will continue to do so.

With the above headlines, you could summarise the last moves to establish a financial transaction tax (FTT). However, you would miss an aspect that is crucial to understanding the development of these initiatives and assessing their potential: The differences between the models sought to be implemented through them.As the name indicates, the idea has always been to levy a tax on financial transactions, ideally be-ing limited to trade of stocks and other financial products. There are many different types of fi-nancial products, though and the initiatives mentioned above vary greatly in their intended coverage of these. At the G20, world leaders failed to reach an agreement on any levy. The proposal by the Eu-ropean Commission is an exten-sive one, calling for many finan-cial products to be taxed – most

importantly the derivatives which are blamed for the current finan-cial crisis. If implemented, econo-mists predict the trade volume in these derivatives to drop by 75%. The FTT to come into effect in France this summer in compari-son is limited to stock and bond trading while, ironically, modern derivative trade arose after the in-troduction of a similar model in Great Britain in 1995. Hence, we can expect an increase in deriva-tive trade once the tax is being levied. Notwithstanding the fact that the models in discussion are very dif-ferent in their extension and esti-mated consequences, they are all subsumed and consequently con-founded under the same term in popular media. This greatly com-plicates the debate on this issue as further specification is needed, but not always given.

+++ G7 agree to put forward financial transaction tax at next G20 meeting +++ G20 disagree on financial transaction tax +++ Commission proposes European financial transaction tax, European leaders are divided on the issue +++ France unilaterally introduces national financial transaction tax +++ Germany and France push for European financial transaction tax, United Kingdom strictly opposed +++ Finance Ministers disagree on European financial transaction tax +++

If you were scared of being lost in Carlsbad, what would you do? Of course, you would befriend a Carls-bad-born delegate! If you remem-ber them still from the delega-tions‘ presentation, the delegation from Carlsbad is really awesome and pretty, so let me introduce one of them from the JURI com-mittee to you, Jan Charvát. Jan is 17 years old and a very smart and friendly looking guy, with an over-whelming dazzling smile. Girls, go for him! He was always interested in issues related to the EU which is also the reason for him being here. While talking, he sounded to me like a man with big dreams and ambitions. His dream is to stu-dy hard in order to get a job with

FRONTEX in the future because it is an enormous and powerful bond that helps to protect the Schengen area. Cool, right? I personally find it very inspiring. Jan is also very humble and kind. He was quite prideful about the possibility to be with his amazing delegation members: The first one is a super great soccer player who chose to follow another dream instead; the next one a girl with an intense interest in Human Rights. Like I said at the beginning, people from Carlsbad are great! So if you need help or just a nice chat, do not be afraid and go find this boy. I am positive that he will ensure that you bear Carlsbad in good remembrance.

From time to time we see a movie, hear a song or read a book that makes us stay with our mouth open and wonder how this is possible. We feel like the whole story is about us, like every said word comes from our mouth. We want to see, hear or read this piece of art over and over again. Paolo Coelho, a Brazilian writer, does it to me every time I read his books. This guy, who wanted to become a writer and had to surmount a very thorny way to reach this, is now fa-mous all over the world. He had to fight many obstacles to be-come a writer. He had serious prob-lems with his parents. Several times, they hospitalised him in the psychi-atric clinic, where he had to under-go electric shocks. He experienced drugs as well as Satanism, but he stopped before it destroyed him. He was married four times and always had problems with relationships. Even though these experiences left him with many scars, they formulat-

ed him and therefore we can read his fantastic books. His phenomenon consists in his abil-ity to give people hope. His famous quote “When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it,” speaks for itself. Every time I am faced with a diffi-cult situation or have doubts about myself, I think of this. And it always makes me pick myself up and go ahead. He did not win a Nobel Prize, but he won the prize of people’s hearts. We read his books because his thoughts are part of our own thoughts. We demonstrate our trust to him every time we buy his new book because he has never disappointed us. We love him because he brings out our own deepest thoughts. For me personally, Paolo Coelho means more than just a good writer. He is the supporter of my decisions, the co-creator of my reality and the guardian of my dreams.

It is early in the morning, terribly cold as the sun has not yet made its way to the higher part of the sky. It is time to run. You get your running shoes, then you put them on. They feel good around your feet since they are shaped according to the con-formation of your body and to your kind of pace. You put on your t-shirt and check your watch. You are ready. Open the door and you hit the road, nobody can stop you. Pace, breathe, your heartbeat getting louder, the blood flowing through your veins faster than ever, it’s terribly cold but you don’t mind. You are a runner, no-body can stop you.

RUN, FORREST, RUN!An invitation to run from a lazy runner

Passions Dario Feliciangeli

If you have ever felt like this, then you are a runner. That’s the way it is: running is not something that you do, it is something that you are. Some could disagree, maybe claim-ing that everybody, from the 10-year-old boy who does it just for fun to the bravest 80-year-old man who takes part in the New York marathon and finishes it, can actually run, and does it: Everyday, everywhere and for the most random reasons you can think

of. Seeing things from another point of view, we could say that there are two different kinds of people who run: The ones who just run trying to gain some kind of benefit from it (e.g. weight loss, health improve-ment, catching the train they are late for) and the ones who run be-cause they simply love it. Those who belong to the first group at some level run because they have to or be-cause they think they have to. Those who belong to the second one are the real runners: The long-distance professional runners, the amateurs who simply go out for a run once a week but who truly enjoy it, the peo-ple who sometimes, out of the blue, just feel the need to start running without an apparent reason*, maybe on the way home after a weary day of work, the ones who smile while running, the ones who listen to the Rocky soundtrack while punching in the air...So: Get your shoes and start run-ning! It is healthy, it is fun, it gives you time to think about things and to solve your problems, it gives you time to listen to that CD you bought but never listened to and, if you live near a park or any kind of green area, it also gives you the opportunity to breathe some fresh air. What’s not to love, then? Run!

* I am not the only one, am I?

The Carl of the Day Award is an award for persons who have made special contributions to the session that are worth recognising. The prize itself is a Swedish medallion adorned by a picture of King Carl XVI of Sweden. The first Carl of the Day award goes to President Benjamin Gradhand for finding illustrious ways of characterising American pop singers’ anatomy and for demonstrating a profound knowledge of Swedish geography as well as showing empathy towards blue animals.Benjamin Gradhand responded by stating that he was “speechless”. Now the excitement is increasing as the speculation over who is going to win it for tomorrow begins!

What is anime? Okay, let me tell you this: Anime does not equal hentai or Pokemon. Feeling disap-pointed or surprised? Do not be. Anime can simply be de-fined as a cartoon from Asia. It is a style of anima-tion that was originally made and then produced mostly by the Japanese. Anime is an animated ver-sion of cinematography. Because of that fact you can find many different genres of Anime. There is Anime for girls (shoujo) and for boys (shonen). You can find things related to magic and sorcery (mahou) or robotical sci-fi (mecha). Of course, there is also An-ime especially made for the younger audience, as the fa-mous Pokémon and Naru-

to. Or, last but not least, there are juicy animated movies made for adults, the infamous hentai. Con-trary to popular belief, it is not your typical Saturday morning cartoon. Anime nowadays has got-ten really popular in the Western world, even in the Czech Republic. As an of-ficial nerd for Anime, I can only recommend some re-ally nice pieces that you could start with such as “Death Note”, an Anime about the possibility to make the world a better place by killing, “The Mel-ancholy of Haruhi Suzumi-ya”, an awesome random piece about high school life with a little twist or “One Piece” a serial about a fierce pirate’s life tolf in a crazily fun way.
