The Namibian College of Open Learning [NAMCOL] is an educational institution, established by an Act of Parliament, which provides courses for adults and out-of-school youth.
A. What is the purpose of the lea et?
The purpose of this lea et is to provide potential NSSCO learners with suf cient information on the variouselds of study as well as on minimum requirements / standards for awarding of Namibia Senior Secondary
Certi cates. This will enable learners to make the right subject choices to pursue a speci c eld of study atinstitutions of higher learning [University, Polytechnic, College of Education, etc.].
B. Fields of Study and Supplementary Subjects
A eld of study is a grouping of at least three interrelated, mutually supportive NSSC Ordinary or Higher levels subjects. These subjects will form the main area of study for the learner. NAMCOL offers some of these subjects at its face-to-face centres or through distance education. Other subjects may only be availableat formal schools.

C. Types of NSSC Certi cates (Group and Subject Awards)
Speci c Requirements for NSSC Group Awards
To qualify for NSSC Group Awards, a learner must: have six (6) subjects at Higher and Ordinary Level have two (2) languages : English and Another language as a First, Second or Foreign Language at
HL or OL Obtain a grade 4 or better in English as HL subject at rst or second language or grade E or better in
English OL at rst or second language; be graded in minimum of six (6) subjects over a maximum of four (4) examination attempts. A minimum
aggregate of 21 points is required.
Certi cation Requirements for NSSC Subject Awards
A candidate who in his/her rst NSSC examination attempt meet the certi cation requirement for aGroup Award automatically qualify to NSSC Subject Award.
A candidate who meets the minimum requirements to be graded qualify for a NSSC Subject Award. For this award, there is no restriction on the number of NSSC examinations a part-time learner may
attempt over time.
General Requirements for Subject Combinations for NSSC and Subject Awards for Full-time& Part-time Candidates
Full time and part time learners must offer no fewer than six subjects for NSSC Group or Subject Awards
Subjects offered on HL or OL or a combination as grouped per Field of Study English Compulsory NSSC subjects that constitute a Field of Study are speci ed in the National Curriculum for Basic
Education Mathematics HL or OL will be compulsory for both full time and part time from 2012 A learner may not offer same subject at both levels or a same language subject at more than one level.
