Hey there, travellerSo you’ve done it. Whether it was a creeping realisation or it hit you like

a freight train, you know you have to go. It just makes sense.

Each of us comes to the decision on our own terms and for a variety ofreasons; maybe you’ve grown up hearing about foreign countries and

cultures and you have to see it for yourself. Perhaps you’ve decided it’stime to get out of your comfort zone in a big way. Even if it’s just that

feeling that you have to get out on your own, you know... get away for awhile and experience the things that most people only hear stories about.

Soon they’ll be your stories to tell, so where will your tale begin?

As in all the best stories our hero’s and heroines could use a little advice,normally this wisdom is delivered by a sage (slightly crazy) monkey, an

angry alcoholic has been or a wizard called Dumbledore. However we hadtrouble tracking those guys down so we had to take matters into our own

hands. What follows is advice, warnings and a few cheeky tips fromtravellers, backpackers, gap year takers, volunteers and camp counselors.

We’ve tried to condense all the useful information we could find forfirst time travellers when they’re getting ready to start their

adventures. From the classic backpack or suitcase?Quick Answer; Suitcase if you plan on staying in one location for

longer periods, backpack if you want to explore.To hostel or hotel? As well as what do people always forget to pack?Where does all my money go!? ($$$ from the obvious to surprising)

And the best ways to meet fellow travellers. If we’ve missed anythingor not answered a burning question get in touch and we’ll do our best

Finally this is our advice gathered from personal experience, friends andfellow travellers. It’s a guide but not a bible there are as many ways totravel as there are people who do so! Ultimately test out a few things,

make mistakes and learn, see what works for you.

Be a Social Traveller

1) Stay in hostel rooms:They’re social by nature even if privacy seems tempting.

2) Be flexible with your plans so that cool groupyou’ve been hanging with for the last two days are

going in the opposite direction but it soundsawesome? … Ah f**k it, I’m in!

3) Sign up for group activities - get involved!

4) Join a tour - SANDEMAN's Walking Tours are agreat place to start.

5) Have a deck of cards. Always.6) Take an interest in the unfamiliar and unknown.

You travelled to get out of your comfort zone, right?

7) Volunteer. There is a reason why InternationalCharity Workers, Camp Counsellors etc. always have

friends all over the world. They’re like minded, outgoingand generous. They had to be to make it through.

8) Talk to locals, anyone and everyone.Even if you’d never talk to them at home, you might

just learn something.
