Strategic Plan: The board has chosen four focal areas in updating the 2009 Strategic Plan, and approved Judge Advocate Tracy Tormey (governance), Lynn Noah (membership), Roland Rapp (fiscal soundness and facilities) and Len Bose (yachting) to chair these categories in the 2014 update process. Each chair is now tasked with identifying their own committee members, and through a process of research and discussion over the next months, arrive at a consensus on updating short term, five- to 10-year and 10- to 25 year goals for the club. They will periodically interface with the Executive Committee and their Board of Directors counterparts, including: Director Larry Fortmuller (governance), Director EB Barden (membership), Secretary Chuck Wert (fiscal soundness and facilities), and Rear Commodore Sandy Mills (yachting). Ultimately, the updated Strategic Plan will be presented for board approval in the fourth quarter this year. Please support our chairs in this endeavor.

Renovation: The City of Newport Beach has approved the architectural plans for the proposed lower-level restroom and patio renovations, subject to revisions to the structural and shoring plans for the elevator pit, which then puts this in the fine-tuning and bidding process before going to the Board of Directors for final approval. Given upcoming events that heavily utilize this area of the club, including Showboat, Opening Day and the Junior Summer program, any approved construction will not start before August 2014.

Showboat: My thanks to the commitment of our cast, crew and stage parents in making Showboat not only a successful but fun event on the Red Carpet.

Membership: Updating the club membership policy — endeavoring to attract members in the 21- to 39-year age group, I am pleased to announce the Board of Directors has taken action to overhaul the now former Mariner Member category, now rebranded to Junior Flag Member. In summary, benchmarks have been readjusted in the 21- to 30- and 31- to 39-year age categories with a view to bring in and transition these non-equity members into Regular Flag equity/voting status at (or before) age 40. This includes corresponding ramp-up of initiation fees, dues and assessments, as well as a revised conversion credit formula in transitioning to Regular Flag status. I invite you to look at your recently received by-law change mailer, as well as read Director EB Barden’s Membership article this month in The Masthead. Renewing our call to action, if you know of a potential new member, be they Junior, Junior Flag or Regular Flag, please make an introduction to Jacque Pane or EB.

The Membership Committee and Board of Directors have redesigned the Mariner Member into the new Junior Flag Membership. The name change was to keep pace with other yacht club programs for the 21-40 age group programs, since the majority of the other clubs use Junior Flag to represent this class of membership.

We are excited to introduce other improvements to this new class, which include changes to initiation fees, dues, monthly minimums and port rules. It is the desire of the Membership Committee and the board to encourage younger members to join BCYC. This gives the club a group of potential Regular Flag Members, will expose more children to our Junior Sailing Program and bring a new energy to BCYC.

We encourage our current membership to become familiar with these changes, and help us develop a much-needed Junior Flag Member class. For further details on these changes, please see the amended by-laws recently mailed to you. I am available to anyone interested in learning more about this essential new tier of membership.

NEW Regular Flag members – look for their blue name tagsMichael Newcombe and Cynthia Newcomb – Regular Flag Michael and Cynthia reside in Corona del Mar. Michael is a general manager (global) for Four Seasons Hotels. He is presently at their Westlake Village facility and has been with Four Seasons for more than 20 years. He has a four-year old daughter. Cynthia is in medical apparatus sales. Michael is an avid sailor and has been a member of Hayling Sailing Club in Hampshire, England, since childhood, where he was an active racer and helped with race management.

Steven Strawn and Andrea West – Regular FlagSteven and Andrea joined as Corinthian Members last July. They jumped right into club activities, attending Clambake aboard Steven’s 47-foot Sea Ray, My Marilyn. They have participated in many BCYC activities and events, and live on Balboa Island. Steven is the owner and CEO of Imagenet, a premier healthcare technology company. Andrea is a real estate broker.

Strolling By The Sea

The Las Commodoras annual Progressive Luncheon takes place April 17, and the theme is Strolling by the Sea. Several members are opening their lovely homes to Las Commodoras for this potluck luncheon, which is always well attended. Arrive at BCYC at 10:30 a.m. for maps and carpooling arrangements, and be prepared for a relaxing afternoon filled with good food and lively conversation. This is a members-only event. Signups will start March 28 – space is sometimes limited, so be sure to register early.

May brings the Las Commodoras-sponsored Poker Run, Friday, May 9. Cost for this event is $45, and all proceeds go to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, the official BCYC charity. If you have an electric boat and would be willing to use it for the Poker Run, please contact Nancy Isbell or Ginny Lombardi. With over 100 people participating last year, we need your boat! Following the Poker Run, the club will have Prime Rib Night. This is an active, fun-filled evening designed to support a very worthwhile cause – your participation will make it a success!

Plan to join Las Commodoras for a stroll along the sea, at the Progressive Luncheon and/or the Poker Run.

You know what they say about the best-laid plans! Due to a scheduling conflict with Shoreline Yacht Club, we are now taking an adventure cruise to Del Rey Yacht Club over Memorial Day weekend. We are looking forward to rounding up a posse of boats and moseying on up to Marina del Rey. We’ll be saddling up the dinghies for a floating poker game and yacht club crawl in the area. Dust off your boots, crank up the country tunes and be sure to sign up in person on Saturday, April 26, 9 a.m.-noon. After noon, sign up by calling the club office or send an email to Susie Brodrick ([email protected]). This sign-up date was not listed on the annual calendar so be sure to add it now!

No change of plans occurred for the Huntington Harbour Yacht Club cruise and our band of merry revelers celebrated St. Patrick’s Day in style. We mixed it up a bit over libations, then feasted on a delicious Irish meal prepared by Lorie Buchannan. Then, the leprechauns of HHYC whisked us away for Duffy tours of Huntington Harbour. No pot o’ gold was found, but a great afternoon was enjoyed by all.

Coming up is the Lido Raft-Up, April 11-13. We’ll be relaxing “Jimmy Buffet-style” with a “Cheeseburger in Paradise” cruise. Come enjoy some pupus and “boat drinks” Friday evening. Saturday morning we’ll start with Bloody Marys and Mimosas – hey, it’s five o’clock somewhere – then kick off our flip flops to dinghy around or just enjoy our “One Particular Harbor.” Saturday afternoon we’ll stoke the barbecues on board a couple of the rafted-up boats for some cheeseburgers in paradise (how do you like yours?). Of course, no visit to “Margaritaville” would be complete without one of those frozen concoctions. It’ll be a “Lovely Cruise,” so sign up now! Transportation from the club will be provided on Saturday afternoon for those who want to visit. What a great way to spend an April weekend in paradise.

Have you ever given much thought about the huge variety of activities that we have available to us as members of BCYC? As I look back on the many events that have taken place since I wrote my last article, I’m truly amazed.

Let’s look at February. The first day was the Southern California Yachting Association-sponsored Women’s Sailing Convention. This involved many of our members as organizers, teachers and participants during this all-day event. There were well over 200 women taking classes and having a great time learning all aspects of sailing.

We then had the Las Commodoras Luncheon and Fashion Show. Las Commodoras members sponsored 22 women who were either Marines or the wives of Marines from Camp Pendleton. Everyone had a wonderful afternoon.

Next came the Commodore’s Ball. What can I add about an event that included cocktail parties at members’ homes, and an exceptional dinner dance at BCYC in an elegantly decorated dining room?

The month ended with a presentation by Gary Jobson as part of the Leukemia Kick off for this year’s fund raising. Gary gave a lively and entertaining presentation concerning the America’s Cup race that was held in San Francisco Bay last year.

Of course, the most important activity at BCYC is the interaction with our friends in the Columbia Room and on our boats. We are truly fortunate.

The 2014 BCYC cruising season kicked off in March with the Huntington Harbour Yacht Club Lunch Cruise and the Lido Raft-Up planned for this month. Although still a few months away, we have two exciting cruises planned for July and August. This year, Clambake will be held in July — July 17-20. We are moving Clambake up, as many kids are normally heading back to school in August and have been unable to participate in what is the most family-oriented cruise and a highlight of the club cruising year. Although the cruise “officially” starts on the 17th, some of us are planning to arrive early to assist with setup on the day before. It is a lot of fun to help and who wouldn’t want to spend an additional day at Catalina! If you plan to attend the cruise and your schedule permits, come over early. More information will be coming in the next few months, so please save the dates and join us on beautiful Catalina Island. Cruise registration opens Saturday, June 7. Come to the club to participate in the sign-up festivities.

The Junior Staff Commodore’s Cruise is scheduled for Aug. 7-10 in San Diego Harbor. Junior Staff Commodore Tom and Mary Madden are currently putting together the details of what will be a great trip to San Diego. Cruisers will make stops at Coronado and San Diego Yacht Clubs – two outstanding destinations, perfectly located for exploring San Diego. This is my favorite cruise of the year, and Joan and I usually extend the cruise with a stay in Glorietta Bay pre- or post-trip. Another option for extending your trip is to reserve a guest slip at any of the other yacht clubs in the bay. If you are interested in staying in Glorietta Bay, you can make reservations online at any time at reservations.portofsandiego.org for up to three nights. Registration for this cruise opens Saturday, July 12.

The BCYC Spring Sailing Program began Feb. 28 with racing practice on Friday afternoons and work with the novice kids on Sunday afternoons. We had to wait for more daylight before we could begin practicing after school, but we plan to sail right up until Memorial Day weekend before taking a short break. Coach Cameron Maclaren has been busy keeping the CFJ fleet of boats in shape and concentrating on high-level racing skills with our Sabot sailors. With all this time on the water, there is no doubt our BCYC sailors will be ready by the time summer rolls around.

We are also raising money to refurbish the CFJ coach fleet. These boats will play an important role in the Summer Program, as well as be heavily used with the Sage Hill School team. Our Summer Sailing Program has been newly redesigned – visit the juniors portion of the club website to review these major improvements. Along with changing various parts of the program structure, we are looking forward to new coaches, revised lesson plans and many new families.

Registration for the BCYC Summer Sailing Program opened Feb. 15, and we welcome the participation of all of our juniors, experienced and new. Based on early signups, it appears turnout will be great, with many new Starfish-level sailors joining the program. With most of our coaches returning, complemented by a new group of talented coaches, I am very excited to see the results of our hard work paying off. We hope it will be our best summer yet.

OPENING DAY 2014Be Safe And Win!

Now is the time to start reviewing the vessel safety checklist in anticipation of BCYC’s Opening Day event May 10: the annual Boat Maintenance Competition and Inspection. It’s easy to do and you will have the satisfaction of a Bristol and safe boat with a trophy or decal to prove it!

The competition is based on the Bristol condition of the boats entered and is conducted by the Balboa Power Squadron. There are two classes for point evaluation. Class 1 involves items required by Coast Guard regulations, while Class 2 items are necessary for the prudent operation of the vessel. Points are awarded based on the following criteria:

Absent, not functioning or not easily accessible – 0

Functioning, but in poor condition – 1

Functioning, but in fair condition – 2

Functioning, and appears to be new – 3

The inspectors look for things like personal flotation devices, navigation light operation, displaying the required CF number on your dinghy and overall condition of the vessel. Sound easy? It is!

Available categories are: up to and including 34-feet; 35- through 45-feet; 46-feet and over; and electric boats.

There are separate trophies in each of the first three categories for both power and sail boats. Regardless of your boat’s size or type, you can be a winner! Please contact me if you have any questions.

If you don’t want to compete, plan to sign up for the Coast Guard inspection and earn your boat a safety decal. It is a courtesy inspection and their findings are given only to the skipper of the boat. Visit vesselsafetycheck.org for more details. The website not only has an item-by-item description of the safety check, you can also use Online Vessel Safety Check, an interactive program that lets you determine if your boat would pass a safety check. This same information is available in the club office.

The competition and inspection begin at 9 a.m. on Opening Day. Find the sign-up sheet form by visiting bcyc.org. Bring your boat to BCYC for the competition and Opening Day dock parties. The club office will begin accepting dock reservations April 9. Good luck!

April is the month where the initials IRS tend to evoke strong emotions…some positive (think refund)…some, well, less positive. But, did you know that IRS also stands for “I Race Sailboats”? Yep, ’tis true.

Before that magic date of April 15, we will run two races: Race #6 of the Ocean Racing Series, April 12; and Race #2 of the Lorin Weiss Series, April 13. File, I mean register, early so you don’t miss out.

April is also the month for the Newport to Ensenada Race. As in years past, I expect to see many BCYC members participating and winning many of the perpetual trophies.

Speaking of trophies, I’m pleased to announce that perpetual trophies, one for PHRF and one for Harbor 20s, will be awarded for our Taco Tuesday Series. The trophies will be presented after the last race of the series. Award criteria are the combination of who shows up the most and who does the best. Taco Tuesdays start May 13, and run through the end of August. Many thanks to Junior Staff Commodore Tom Madden and the 2013 BCYC Board of Directors for providing the trophies.

We’re still two months from the start of the Turtle Rally, but the buzz is loud (bet you didn’t know turtles buzzed). Remember, this is not a race, it is a sailing event. Go slow with others. But, register quickly.

IRS Is Good! Squid And Kelp Paddies

As spring approaches. so do the squid … and fishing improves! In the early 60s, there was far less specific knowledge about the white sea bass than we have today, but one thing was a given – when the big schools of squid showed up on the backside of Catalina, off the famed Silver Canyon, the white sea bass were right there with them. And, just like today, when the fish show up, the fishermen are right there to target them. Often the best time to catch white sea bass is around sunrise. Many gung-ho fishermen will spend the night on the backside of the island anchored in 60 feet of water with lights on to “make squid” or catch squid for bait. If you are looking at your fish finder the white sea bass appear as a snake-like image on your screen because they follow each other.

As the ocean temperature warms, kelp starts to die and break apart, floating to the surface. These kelp paddies typically will have anchovies near the surface, mackerel somewhat lower, and yellowtail below them. The larger the kelp paddy, the better chance that some fish will be home.

Since many BCYC members have not been exposed to fishing, I propose a half-day fishing trip aboard Salt Shaker, Saturday, May 3. This is a 35-foot fishing machine with 900 horse power, designed to get you to the fishing spots and back home quickly. If interested, contact me at [email protected]
