A massive construction crane crashed into

Mecca’s Grand Mosque in stormy weather Friday, killing at least 87 people and injuring 184, Saudi authorities said, less than a fortnight before the Hajj pilgrimage starts.

The civil defence authority said on Twitter that emergency teams were sent to the scene after a “crane fell at the Grand Mosque.” That

came about an hour after it tweeted that Mecca was “witnessing medium to heavy rains,” with pictures circulating on social media showing lightning.

Authorities have not yet released an official account on what happened. Pictures of the incident on Twitter showed bloodied bodies strewn across a courtyard where the top part of the crane, which appeared to have bent or snapped, had crashed into

the several storey-high building.

A video on YouTube showed people screaming and scurrying around

right after a massive crash was heard and as fog engulfed the city. The incident occurred as hundreds of thousands of Muslims gather from all over the world for the annual Hajj pilgrimage expected to begin on September 21.

The governor of Mecca region, Prince Khaled

al-Faisal, has ordered an investigation into the incident and was heading to the mosque, the official @makkahregion page on Twitter said.

Meanwhile, online activists created a hashtag on Twitter urging Mecca residents to donate blood at hospitals in the area.

Iran’s official IRNA news agency, quoting the head of the Hajj Organisation, said that 15 Iranian pilgrims were among those injured.

A massive project is currently underway to expand the area of the mosque by 400,000 square metres (4.3 million square feet), allowing it to accommodate up to 2.2 million people at once. The mosque is surrounded by a number of cranes.

The Hajj has largely been incident-free during the past few years. The official SPA news agency said in a statement that by Friday, almost 800,000 pilgrims had arrived for Hajj. (AFP)

No Bahraini pilgrims were injured or killed in Mecca

yesterday following the collapse of a crane, Bahrain Foreign Ministry confirmed yesterday.

The Ministry’s officials contacted the Saudi authorities, who confirmed at 8.50 pm that no Bahrainis were currently among the victims. The Ministry earlier tweeted that

Bahrain consulate in Jeddah was establishing contacts with Bahraini caravans to check on the pilgrimages.

It asked Bahraini pilgrims to contact a hotline +966 555 799 008 for assistance, or contact the consulate on 01260 77370 or 01260 77414. It may be noted that around 87 pilgrims were killed and 184 others were injured after a crane collapsed in the Grand Mosque in Mecca.

French honorary consul in Turkey suspended ParisFrench Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius on Friday suspended an honorary consul in Turkey for sell-ing boats to migrants. “The Minister has just ordered his suspension,” the Foreign Ministry said following a television report showing the man in his sailing goods shop in the Turkish resort town of Bodrum. Outside the shop hung a French flag and a plaque identifying him as an honorary consul representing France.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has welcomed the

decision issued by the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) to hoist the flag of the State of Palestine at UN Headquarters.

Terming it as historic decision, the Ministry said, “It’s an advanced step towards Palestinian people’s regain of legitimate rights, in line with

the Arab Peace Initiative and on the basis of international legitimacy and relevant UN resolutions,” the Ministry said in a statement yesterday.

The UN General Assembly voted on Thursday to allow the Palestinians to raise their flag at its headquarters in a diplomatic victory in their campaign for statehood.

A resolution was adopted by member states with 119 in favour, eight voting against --

including Israel and the United States -- and 45 abstentions.

The text allows the flags of Palestine and the Holy See -- both of which have non-member observer status -- to be hoisted alongside those of the member states.

The UN now has 20 days to implement the move, which would be in time for a visit by Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas on September 30. Palestinians celebrate the UN decision

COMMERCE MINISTRY PULLS THE PLUG ON PVT COMPANY

Unicity violates commercial law in the Kingdom, headquarters sealed off Muhannad Mansour/[email protected]

Manama

The sole outlet of an international company

in Bahrain had been sealed off by the authorities due to its continuous breach of the commercial law in the Kingdom.

The gates of Unicity International Headquarters in Bahrain, located in the Diplomatic Area, were shut down by the Commercial Registration Directorate in Industry and Commerce Ministry last Sunday.

Although the Ministry didn’t announce the closure of the company yet, it had earlier limited Unicity’s activities in the country. It is said that the company apparently

sold its products following pyramid schemes and network marketing strategies, which are prohibited in the Kingdom.

As announced by the Ministry last February, Industry and Commerce Minister Zayed

Al Zayani issued a Ministerial order (Number 2) of 2015 to ban selling products through pyramid scheme and network marketing in Bahrain.

The company, which sells healthcare, weight control

and nutrition products, mainly depended on strategies similar to the recently banned pyramid schemes and network marketing.

It actually discontinued such marketing methods and depended on direct sales at its outlet following the issuance of the Minister’s decision.

“We’re not registering any new salespersons at the moment and our management will inform the public if any updates occurred,” an employee told DT News on condition of anonymity a few months ago. Yet, the company’s management refused to comment on the matter.

In a press statement that was issued by the Ministry earlier, Consumer Protection Director Senan Al Jabery said, “The Ministerial order was issued

as a response to complaints about such practices that aren’t suitable to laws and regulations in Bahrain, especially the consumer protection law.”

He elaborated: “The idea of the pyramid scheme and network marketing is to convince a person to buy a product and then convince others to buy and the chain continues, in which the first buyer gets more commissions

if he has more members under him.”

“The Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry has been told to inform commercial sector such as hotels and hall renting companies not to allow meetings to promote these two types of marketing at their venues. The Ministry has started certain administrative and legal procedures in this regards,” he added.

Closure notice posted at the entrance of the company

LIGHTNING, STORM CAUSED THE TRAGEDY?

Days before the annual pilgrim seasonRiyadh

Witnesses claim that the deadly crane crash at the Grand

Mosque of Mecca yesterday amid high winds and thunderstorms could have been caused by the storm or lightning.

Dramatic footage shows the moment the crane toppled in heavy rain, with another video capturing the chaos and confusion inside the building as people run for cover after the impact.

Photos posted on social media shows the polished tiled floor of the mosque covered in rubble, bodies and pools of blood, and people fleeing the area bleeding and covered in soot.

Hundreds of thousands of Muslims are gathering at the holy site from all over the world for the

annual hajj pilgrimage set to begin later this month.

A massive £14billion project is currently underway to increase the area of the mosque by 4.3million sq ft - so that it can accommodate up to 2.2 million people at once.

The crane that crashed belongs to a German crane company operated by the Bin Laden family’s consortium, who are heading the expansion of the Holy Mosque.

Saudi BinLaden Group was founded by Osama’s Bin Laden’s billionaire father Mohammed and the sprawling construction conglomerate runs a large amount of major building contracts in the Kingdom.

Pictures taken before the disaster show the crane being struck by a bolt of lightning and authorities are in little doubt extreme weather was to blame.

The crane fell into the east side of the mosque, with the top section of the structure crashing into the roof.

Earlier, the Civil Defence had issued thunderstorm, heavy rain

and wind warnings in the area and authorities say search and rescue teams and medical workers from the Saudi Red Crescent are now at the scene. (Daily Mail)

Nine Indians injuredNews Delhi

At least nine Indians were among those injured when

a construction crane crashed into the Grand Mosque of Saudi Arabia’s holy Muslim city of Mecca on yesterday.

“Our Consulate in Jeddah is monitoring situation in Mecca following tragic accident. We have recd reports that 9 Indian pilgrims are injured,” Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Vikas Swarup tweeted.

He said senior Indian officers, including the Consul General, are in Mecca and Indian doctors deployed in all government hospitals are trying to get more information.

Mecca no stranger to tragedy: A timelineRiyadh

Millions of Muslims have made the hajj, the annual pilgrimage

to Mecca. But in recent years, the pilgrimage has been marred by tragedies – usually the result of a failure of crowd control or the crush of stampedes. Yesterday, just days before the hajj was to begin, tragedy struck again.

One of the most recent disasters occurred on Jan. 12, 2006. At least 340 people were killed and 290 injured in a stampede that started when a busload of pilgrims unloaded

near a ramp to the Jamaraat Bridge. Pilgrims began tripping over luggage, which resulted in a deadly crush of people rushing to carry out a devil-stoning ritual in the city of Mina, just outside Mecca. About 2.5 million people from around the world participated in the hajj that year.

After the 2006 incident, the Jamaraat Bridge and the pillars representing the devil were demolished and reconstructed. A wider, multilevel bridge was built with massive columns.

Other incidents:• Feb. 1, 2004: A stampede at

the devil-stoning ritual left 251 pilgrims dead and 244 injured.

• Feb. 11, 2003: Fourteen pilgrims died during the devil-stoning ritual.

• March 5, 2001: A stampede at the devil-stoning ritual resulted in the deaths of 35 pilgrims.

• April 9, 1998: At least 118 pilgrims were trampled to death and 180 injured on the Jamaraat Bridge.

• May 23, 1994: A stampede at the devil-stoning ritual killed at least 270.

• July 2, 1990 : A stampede inside a pedestrian tunnel leading from Mecca resulted in the deaths of 1,426 pilgrims.

Iranians and Paks among injuredRiyadh

Iran’s official IRNA news agency, quoting the head of the Hajj

Organisation, said 15 Iranian pilgrims were among those injured in the crane crash incident.

Malaysian media reported that six Malaysians got injured in the mishap. But it was not confirmed by the Malaysian Consulate.

Arab News on its Twitter account said, “14 Pakistanis, 9 Indians injured.” Bangladesh consulate in Saudi Arabia said 25 Bangladeshi nationals were wounded in the accident.

Weaam Sperinck has been drawing since as long she can

remember. But her drawing of My Little Pony, which she made with colouring pencils as a kid, remains one of her favourite works.

Weaam, half Bahraini and half British, grew up in her own world of art and constantly dreamt of becoming an artist.

After completing studies at St. Christopher’s School, she moved

to the UK to study BA in Visual Communication at the Glasgow School of Art.

A year after her graduation in 2009, she returned to Bahrain and took up a teaching course to set up her career.

Post its completion she became an art and design teacher in secondary schools in Bahrain.

Weaam was a semifinalist in the Adobe Achievement Awards for animations. She was also among the few chosen from the Design Degree show at GSA, to participate in a graduate exhibition with a variety of local artists.

Illustrating passionWeaam said the digital developments

and technological advancements these days have made so much possible in the world of art and design. It has also lead to some interesting hybrids, she said.

She considers her ability to incorporate storytelling into visuals, the most integral element in her work.

“I find myself drawn towards stories. And I keep searching for ways to tell them in a new way. Even when I don’t start a project with a story, a narrative forms somehow and becomes the focal point,” she said.

Teaching careerWeaam believes, her teaching career

was more of a learning experience to

herself. “In my classroom, the students learn a wide range of topics such as art movements, history and geography, as all these are closely related to understanding arts. From sculpturing to Photoshop, I try to impart more than just making pencil strokes,” she said.

To her students and other art enthusiasts she has only one message. “Look around you and keep your eyes open. You get all the inspiration you need to produce your works.”

Weaam, who recently exhibited her works at Call Out Exhibition at Malja, is currently focusing on her masters project for the next year, which is based on the relationship between culture and personal identity.

Furore over condolence banners in the Southern GovernorateMuhannad Mansour/[email protected]

Mourning signs that were posted by a

parliamentarian in different parts of the Southern Governorate has become a controversy among the residents of the district.

In a social gesture, MP Khalid Al Shaer set up a

couple of posters on the roads of Isa Town and Zayed Town, offering condolence to the residents of the constituency and the people of Bahrain on the occasion of the martyrdom of five Bahraini soldiers in Yemen last week.

Several residents and public figures have expressed their annoyance, after the Southern Area Municipality apparently

posted violation notices on the flex boards. The issue became a debate on popular local online platforms.

In a statement issued on Thursday, fellow legislator and head of the council’s Foreign Affairs, Defence and National Security Committee Jamal Bu Hassan said, “We all know and respect the law. MPs form the first step of the

ladder of legislation in the country, but the municipality could have directly informed the MP about the violation, considering the national importance of the posters.”

He described the municipality’s step as “uncivilised and careless towards the feelings of the people of Bahrain.” MP Al Shaer’s comments were

not immediately available. On the other hand, several groups on social media networks discussed how “the country should celebrate the martyrdom of its brave soldiers instead of mourning them.”

A popular account on Twitter stated “the sacrifices of the martyred soldiers should be remembered in a more positive way.”

‘CASUAL SHOVE’ DURINGFIRST DATE KILLS TEENDT News NetworkManama

A person shoved his girlfriend on her chest,

which killed her during their

first date, the court heard. The victim, 18, was reportedly suffering from heart problems and the accused said the teenager died when he

“jokingly hit” her on her chest. But the man, in his twenties,

was referred to a criminal court on charges of beating the teenager to death.

“We met at a bus station. We boarded a bus and started talking to each other. We exchanged jokes and I shoved her casually. But I didn’t know it would lead to her death,” the accused told prosecutors.

The woman reportedly collapsed to the ground and

some of the passengers tried to give her first aid. The accused reportedly pretended as if he didn’t know her.

He later offered to take her to hospital and he hitchhiked a car to transport her.

The girl, however, died at the hospital, and the man was nabbed after a witness, who spotted him with the girl in the bus station, reported it to police.

Her family confirmed the

girl was having heart problems. However, the accused was charged with causing her death.

Many smuggled birds were confiscated at King

Fahad Causeway recently while being transported to Saudi Arabia from Bahrain, Saudi media reported.

Several Saudi publications, reported that “custom services succeeded in foiling an attempt to smuggle 2470 birds into the Kingdom.”

King Fahad Causeway Customs General Director Dhaifallah Al Otaibi explained that the birds were hidden in four vehicles coming from

Bahrain. Al Otaibi added the birds were stashed in wooden boxes. He also revealed the smugglers also made custom

ventilation tubes inside the cars to ensure the airflow inside the boxes.

He confirmed Saudi Arabia

bans any form of import of live birds, except hatching eggs and chicks under supervision of an official party.

The incident, however, was not reported by Bahraini authorities.

An Asian national was killed and another was injured in a road mishap that took place near Amwaj Island. Two Bangeladishi nationals, Jodhar Mini Laj, 45, and Mohammed Hanif, 34, were run over by a car driven by an Ethiopian national. Jodhar died on the spot, but his colleague was admitted to hospital in ‘stable condition’. Witnesses said the car was driven at a high speed. The Ministry of Interior confirmed the accident, tweeting “A man died and another injured at Amwaj Avenue in Galali.”

A person, on losing control of his vehicle, crashed into a vehicle driven by a woman in Jidhafs. However, both the drivers were unhurt in the accident.

A police station in the country became the target

of another terror attack after a bomb blast that occurred on Thursday night. However, no one was injured in the blast, according to Deputy Chief of Public Security Major-General Naji Al Hajil.

Naji Al Hajil confirmed the incident and said the blast occurred at Khamis Police Station in Bilad Al Qadeem. But, no one sustained any injury in the blast, he added.

Forensic teams rushed to the blast site, Naji Al Hajil said, adding “an investigation has been launched to identify and nab the culprits to bring them before justice.

The Public Prosecution has been notified about the investigation into the incident, the Deputy Chief added

without elaborating much. It is worth noting terrorists have increasingly been targeting security personnel in the country.

Interestingly, the security personnel had earlier seized a large consignment of arms

and ammunitions, reportedly, smuggled into the country from Iran. Iran has been blamed for meddling in Bahrain’s affairs by the country’s leadership.

It was only on Wednesday, Foreign Minister Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa

in a press statement from Paris had called upon the international community to rein in the aggressive Iran, which is out to create chaos in the Kingdom.

He had said the consignment of weapons and ammunitions smuggled into the Kingdom from Iran was so large in quantity that it could have obliterated Manama’s existence as a nation but for the timely action by the country’s security personnel.

Security beefed upSecurity was beefed up in the near mosques, following the incident. Public Security personnel were seen in the vicinity of mosques during the midday prayers.

Police set up checkpoints near mosques located in different parts of the Kingdom.

PRESERVATION OF THE OZONE LAYER

The author heads the Waste Disposal Unit for the Supreme Council for Environment, Bahrain. He can be reached at [email protected]

The United Nations’ International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer is observed on September 16 every

year. This event commemorates the date of the signing of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer in 1987 when representatives from 24 countries met in Montreal and announced to the world that it was time to stop destroying the ozone layer. The Ozone day was first celebrated on September 16, 1995.

The Earth’s atmosphere is divided into several layers. The lowest region, the troposphere, extends from the Earth’s surface till about 10 kilometers in altitude where virtually all human activities occur. The stratosphere is the next layer from 10- 50 km. The ozone layer refers to the ozone within stratosphere, where over 90% of the earth’s ozone resides, though its thickness varies seasonally and geographically.

Ozone concentrations are greatest between 20- 40 km, where they range from about 2 -8 parts per million. Ozone layer absorbs 93-99% of the sun’s high frequency ultraviolet (UV) light, which is potentially damaging the life on earth.

Ozone depletion describes two distinct but related phenomena observed since the late 1970s, a steady decline of about 4% per decade in the total volume of ozone in Earth’s stratosphere, and a much larger springtime decrease in stratospheric ozone over Earth’s polar regions. The latter phenomenon is referred to as the ozone hole.

The discovery of the Antarctic ozone hole in 1985 lead to the ‘Vienna Convention for Protection of the Ozone Layer’. Later, the Montreal Protocol came into effect and CFC production was sharply limited since 1987 and was completely phased out in the next decade. Now the governments have decided to eventually discontinue production of CFCs, halons, carbon tetrachloride, and methyl chloroform while industry has developed more ‘ozone-friendly’ substitutes. Over 90 individual ozone-depleting substances are now controlled under the Montreal Protocol. Thus, it is expected that the ozone layer will recover over the next five decades.

The Earth’s ozone layer protects all form of life from the sun’s harmful radiation, but human activities in the past decades have damaged this protective shield leading to higher skin cancer, immune deficiency disorders, genetic damage, increased cataract rates, plastic degradation and are affecting air quality, marine life and causing crop damage. Increased penetration of UV results in additional production of ground level ozone, which causes several respiratory illnesses.

Almost all countries are phasing out the production of ozone-depleting substances (ODS) in an effort to safeguard the ozone layer. Its depletion is thus considered to be one of the most serious global environmental and human health threats.

World Ozone Day has been celebrated since 1994 and was established by the United Nations General Assembly. The day is mainly intended to spread awareness of the depletion of the Ozone Layer and search for solutions to preserve it. People from all over the world are expected to gather in Montreal on September 16th to join the talks and seminars.

Bahrain has already banned all imports of ODS. These include automobile and truck air-conditioning units, refrigerators, freezers, dehumidifiers, water coolers, ice machines, air-conditioning, heat pump units, aerosol products except medical ones, portable fire extinguisher, insulation boards, panels and pipe covers. The only way to improve the situation is to stop the release of CFCs and other ODS into the atmosphere. As an individual we need to protect the ozone layer by:• Using‘Ozone-Friendly’products.• EnsuretechniciansrepairingourrefrigeratororACs

recover and recycle the old CFCs so they are not released into the atmosphere. • Vehicle air conditioning units should regularly be

checked for leaks. • ReplacingHalonfireextinguisherswithalternatives.• Protecting ourselves from increased exposure to

strong sunlight.

General Director of Anti-corruption and Economic

and Electronic Security Lieutenant Colonel Bassam Al Miraj announced yesterday the arrest of four Asian nationals for stealing data of bank cards of commercial bank clients in Bahrain.

A bank, which preferred anonymity, reported the incident to police, following which police moved to the location and arrested the suspects red-handed.

They were removing devices that copy data, when they were nabbed.

Al Miraj said the legal proceedings are being taken to refer the case to the Public Prosecution.

A 30-year-old person had his initial verdict in a

theft case upheld by the HighCriminal Appeals Court.

The accused was tried for stealing his uncle’s car and later selling it to a scrapyard.

The 30-year-old also robbed the victim of several fishing gears, carpentry tools and car repair kits.

“The tools and the kits were stored in my the attic of my house, but all of them suddenly disappeared. Later, my pick-up was also later stolen,” the victim told prosecutors earlier.

The accused’s involvement in the incident was discovered after the uncle found some of the stolen items in the scrapyard. When he asked its owner, he revealed who sold it.

Karachi

Karachi, Pakistan’s biggest and most diverse city, was once

home to a famous nightclub scene where alcohol flowed freely and luminaries from the world of jazz played to packed crowds eager for a taste of Western culture.

Today, a new generation is seeking to revive

the partying

traditions of their parents and grandparents -- albeit behind closed doors.

At a luxury hotel in the metropolis of 20 million -- better known for bitter political acrimony, gang violence and bloody turf wars -- it is after midnight and the private party has just started.

A young female DJ, tanned and tattooed, is in control of the beats. Men dressed in suits and ties chain smoke as they listen to the electro-

funk of Daft Punk, as women in slinky dresses strut across

the dance floor. The party was not

advertised -- and

from the street you would never know it was happening -- to avoid the attention of suicide bombers and extremist clerics.

Before the Islamisation from the late 1970s that fundamentally altered the country, Pakistan’s nightlife was legendary.

The golden-era began in the 1950s and rolled on until prohibition in 1977, which was followed by a slew of Islamist policies that drastically altered society.

Clubs such as Playboy, Excelsior, Oasis, Samar, Club 007 all competed to be the place to be seen by Karachi’s hip young crowd.

Bhutto’s overthrow In Karachi’s heyday,

politicians, young people, belly dancers, foreign

diplomats, the c a b i n

c r e w of foreign airlines and musicians from touring Southeast Asia orchestras were all swept up together in the melee of the city’s nightlife.

From 1970 to 1975, sporting long hair and oversized sunglasses, Menezes’ band The In Crowd was one of Karachi’s most popular.

The group played at the 1972 inauguration of president Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, father of Pakistan’s first female prime minister Benazir Bhutto.

“In the afternoon we were walking into his house to set up and there was Mr Bhutto... I was carrying an amplifier and a guitar in one hand. And I said, ‘Good afternoon, sir’. And he said, ‘Good afternoon’. I said, ‘Sir, will there be dancing?’ He said, ‘I don’t know but (if there is) please don’t hide yourself’,” recalls former bandmember Leon Menezes.

Five years later, Bhutto caved in to pressure

from increasingly influential

Islamists and banned alcohol, before being overthrown and ultimately hanged by the military government of Islamist general Zia ul-Haq.

Velvet underground Prohibition was the death knell

for the clubs, but it did not eradicate the thirst for a nightlife.

Today, most parties happen behind the closed doors and high walls of private homes. “Wine shops”, often run by Christians, sell alcohol to locals, while bootleggers deliver high-end liquor to the doors of the wealthy.

Pilot Akeel Akhtar turns his home into a club twice a month for a select group of guests with Pink Floyd, the Rolling Stones and modern hits blaring out. “We end the evening with friends on the beach. Will you

come with us?” he wonders. (Guillaume LAVALLÉE,

Jake Gyllenhaal takes a bulldozer to his own life as a man unhinged by grief in Demolition, which opened

North America’s largest film festival in Toronto on Thursday.

In the drama by Canadian director Jean-Marc Vallee, Gyllenhaal plays a New York investment banker, Davis Mitchell, who starts to unravel after his wife is killed in a car crash.Pressed by his father-in-law to pull it together, Mitchell instead launches into an obsessive campaign against a vending machine company, penning letters of complaint that take on an increasingly confessional tone.

At the same time, he commits random acts of destruction -- dismantling household appliances as if trying to pry apart his world.

Amid the ruins, Mitchell strikes up a strange bond with a vending machine company employee (played by Naomi Watts) after she finds herself on the receiving end of his letters.

The film brings director Vallee to Toronto a third year in a row, on the heels of Wild with the Oscar-nominated Reese Witherspoon, and Dallas Buyers Club, which earned Matthew McConaughey an Oscar for his portrayal of a hustler who works around the system to buy medication for AIDS patients.

Ridley Scott’s big budget return to space will hopefully be a far

more interesting excursion than Alien prequel Prometheus, a sequel to which he is currently prepping. A juicy premise (astronaut stranded on Mars) and arguably the year’s most impressive cast (Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Chiwetel Ejiofor,

Kristen Wiig, Jeff Daniels) suggests it might.

Bryan Cranston aims to finally shake off the meth-cooking shadow of

Walter White with a lead in Austin Powers director Jay Roach’s McCarthyism-era biopic. He leads a cast that also includes Helen Mirren, John Goodman and Louis CK in a tale of a screenwriter who gets blacklisted.

Samuel Leroy JacksonSamuel Leroy Jackson is an American actor and film producer. He achieved prominence and critical acclaim in the early 1990s with films such as Jungle Fever (1991), Patriot Games (1992), Amos & Andrew (1993), True Romance (1993), Jurassic Park (1993) and his collaborations with director Quentin Tarantino in the films Pulp Fiction (1994) and Jackie Brown (1997). He is a highly prolific actor, appearing in over 100 films, including Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995), Unbreakable (2000), Shaft (2000), The 51st State (2001), Black Snake Moan (2006), Snakes on a Plane (2006) and the Star Wars prequel trilogy (1999–2005), as well as the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Save for a voice role in this summer’s Minions, Sandra Bullock has been

biding her time before following up her Oscar-nominated turn in Gravity. It appears as if she’s picked smartly with a lead in David Gordon Green’s political satire based on a 2005 documentary

about warring spin doctors.

While her role as a bored housewife in the romantic drama Carol

has pretty much ensured her an Oscar nomination next year, Cate Blanchett is hoping to double her chances with a supporting turn in this journalism drama. She plays Mary Mapes, the

producer to Dan Rather, played by Robert Redford, in this story of

Bush-era controversy.

One of the festival’s biggest British hopes sees Tom Hiddleston take

centre-stage in an adaptation of JG Ballard’s dystopian thriller about an isolated tower block that offers luxury at a price. It’s the latest film from Ben Wheatley, who impressed with Kill List and A Field in England.

Michael Moore’s return to film is shrouded in secrecy and was only

officially announced when the Toronto schedule was released. Like his other films, it’ll be a provocative, politically fuelled, possibly angry look at America’s knack for invading countries.

KUWAIT SET TO BUY 28 EUROFIGHTER JETSRome

Kuwait signed a memorandum of

understanding yesterday to buy Eurofighter jets in a deal worth up to 8 billion euros ($9 billion), Italian industry sources said.

They will purchase 28 Eurofighter warplanes in a deal that could represent a setback for US rival Boeing. The Eurofighter aircraft are produced by Italy’s Finmeccanica, BAE Systems and Airbus . Sources said the 20-year-long deal with Kuwait would be finalised “in a few weeks”.

Quoting a person familiar with the negotiations, the financial news service Bloomberg reported that the Kuwaitis were close to agreeing to take 28 of the European consortium’s Typhoon jets under a bilateral agreement with Italy.

Italy’s defence ministry

confirmed that the two governments had reached a preliminary understanding, which could lead to an accord but refused to divulge any further details.

Kuwait had been expected to opt for Boeing’s Super Hornet

F18s. The Gulf state is looking to upgrade its firepower against a backdrop of increased security concerns in the region linked to the rise of Islamic State and instability in Iraq and Syria.

A spokesman for Boeing

said: “The U.S Navy and Boeing continue to discuss Super Hornets with potential Middle East customers.”

A source close to the matter said there had been no deal on the Eurofighters and that talks were ongoing with both

companies, which could result in Kuwait taking a mix of their planes.

Eurofighter is a partnership between Italy’s Finmeccanica, Britain’s BAE Systems and civilian planemaker Airbus. Finmeccanica shares rose more than five percent on Friday on hopes for a deal with similar stories appearing in the Italian media.

Leading broadsheet Corriere della Sera said on its website that Finmeccanica had won Kuwaiti contracts worth as much as eight billion euros through its Alenia Aermacchi unit after three years of talks.

The newspaper said an accord had been reached Thursday and signed by Italian Defense Minister Roberta Pinotti and Finmeccanica Chief Executive Officer Mauro Moretti. There was no immediate comment from the companies involved.

Prague

Eastern European countries resisted on Friday a

German push for them to take in more migrants, exposing a deep rift in the EU as video footage stoked concerns about Hungary’s treatment of refugees.

Pressing his Czech, Hungarian, Polish and Slovakian counterparts in Prague, Germany’s foreign minister warned the influx of hundreds of thousands of migrants could be “the biggest challenge for the EU in its history.”

“If we are united in describing the situation as such, we should be united that such a challenge is not manageable for a single country,” Frank-Walter Steinmeier said, calling for “European solidarity.”

Germany has taken in 450,000 refugees this year, most of them fleeing violence in the Middle East and Asia. Millions more are stuck in camps in Lebanon, Turkey and Jordan.

But Steinmeier’s appeal to agree to new European Commission proposals to share around 160,000 migrants among the 28-nation bloc fell on deaf ears among eastern members.

Paris

Canada, India, Singapore and Egypt are “seriously”

interested in buying France’s two Mistral warships, a senior official has said, after Paris scrapped a deal to sell the vessels to Russia over the Ukraine crisis.

Louis Gautier, an official who advises the prime minister on defence and security matters, also told lawmakers this week that the cost of abandoning the agreement with Russia

would be at least 1.1 billion euros ($1.2 billion) if the government did not find another buyer, according to a summary of his comments obtained by the news agency AFP yesterday.

That figure includes the costs of the maintenance required to keep the pair of amphibious helicopter-carriers in operational condition and fees for keeping them docked in the western port of St Nazaire, which together are running

at two million euros a month. However, it does not

include the costs of removing Russian fittings -- including communications equipment -- that are already on the ships, Gautier said.

Work to remove the fittings is not expected to be complete until March.

The deal to sell the warships to Russia was formally cancelled in early August in response to Russian aggression in Ukraine last year.

Karachi

A Pakistani paramilitary force said yesterday it

had killed four terror suspects during a gunfight in Karachi, but a leading opposition party said the men were executed as part of an ongoing political vendetta.

Rights groups say authorities have resorted to hundreds of extra-judicial killings during a “clean-up” operation that began in 2013 in a city that has long been plagued by criminal, political, ethnic and Islamist violence.

A spokesman for the paramilitary Rangers said that the incident took place after they raided a hideout in city’s west used by the killers of Hasnain Bukhari, a lawyer who was murdered in March this year.

“Upon seeing the Rangers, the terrorists opened intense fire, which was effectively responded to,” the spokesman said.

“During the encounter four terrorists died whereas one solider of the Rangers was wounded,” he added. Those killed were identified as members of a team

of target killers of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), the Rangers said in a statement.

The statement alleged that the four men were involved in the killing of as many as 28 people, including police officials and a lawyer.

But the MQM, the main political party in the city of 20 million, also issued a statement saying the four were party activists who had “disappeared” months ago after being kidnapped by the Rangers.

The MQM has announced a day of mourning on Saturday. Aminul Haq, a senior MQM leader said that the families had so far identified three of the men and had lodged missing persons cases for them at the time of their disappearance.

Haq added that in the past two years 45 party workers were murdered extra judicially, while 165 were missing. The MQM has itself been accused of using extortion and murder to cement its grip on power -- charges it denies.

Rest in sightUS marks 14th anniversary of 9/11

WOUNDS YET TO HEAL

Washington

With the United States all set to mark the

14th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, terrorists and attackers keep finding ways to surpass the security arrangements and wreak havoc.

Spreading panic on the anniversary day in the capital city, a shooting incident at the Washington rail station has led the authorities to evacuate the area and shut down the station for brief period.

Panicked passengers fled Washington’s main train station yesterday after a security officer shot a man who had stabbed a woman, in what police said appeared

to be a domestic incident.Rail service at the station

-- a main Amtrak hub on the US East Coast rail line linking Boston, New York and Washington -- resumed

shortly a f t e r t h e

incident. Police commander Jeff Brown told reporters that the suspect apparently stabbed the woman at the entrance to an adjacent building, and was then chased into the station by an armed security officer from the adjacent Securities and Exchange Commission.

The officer fired one round when the suspect refused to surrender his weapon and lunged toward him.

The suspect was hit in the side, and his injuries -- along with those of the woman -- were not life-threatening, he said. Both were being treated at area hospitals.

Washington

President Barack Obama yesterday led the United

States in remembrance of the 9/11 attacks, marking a 14th anniversary replete with echoes of that autumn day and the now perennial terror threat.

At 8:46 am (1246 GMT) on the South Lawn of the White House, a bell chimed three times to mark the moment when Flight 11, piloted by Al-Qaeda operatives, careened into the North Tower of the World Trade Centre in New York.

Nearly 3,000 people died on September 11, 2001 at Ground Zero in New York, at the Pentagon and aboard

a hijacked airliner that went down in rural Pennsylvania.

“We honour those we lost. We salute all who serve to keep us safe. We stand as strong as ever,” Obama later said in a post to social media.

Almost a decade and a half later, Osama bin Laden is dead and the US presence in Afghanistan and Iraq has ebbed, but Americans’ sense of loss and shock has receded little.

In New York, police and relatives of those killed in the World Trade Centre read the names of the victims at Ground Zero, now the site of the National 9/11 Memorial and Museum.

UN to mediate Yemen peace talksSanaa

Yemen’s government said yesterday it will join

UN-mediated peace talks next week, as rocket fire from Iran-backed rebels reportedly killed 20 civilians and wounded dozens more in a busy market.

Meanwhile, the Saudi-led coalition sent new reinforcements over the border into Yemen in preparation for an offensive to retake the capital, seized by the Shia Huthi insurgents a year ago.

And, in an ongoing campaign to soften up Sanaa, coalition warplanes struck an arms depot, triggering powerful explosions that killed at least seven civilians and wounded 10, witnesses and medics said.

A reporter of the news agency AFP at the Wadia border crossing from Saudi Arabia saw at least 40 vehicles cross into Yemen’s oil-rich Marib province in part of the operation to recapture more territory from the Huthis, who

swept southwards after taking Sanaa.

Bodies of six missing Indian seamen found

The bodies of six Indian seamen missing since their boat was apparently hit by Saudi-led coalition airstrikes in Yemen have been found and a seventh is still missing, New Delhi said yesterday.

India’s foreign ministry said Wednesday that boats carrying 21 Indian nationals

had been hit as they travelled across the Red Sea to the Yemeni port of Mokha on Tuesday.

“It is regrettably informed that late at night on 10 September, the bodies of 6 of the missing persons present

on the boats were recovered,” said Vikas Swarup, the ministry spokesman, in a statement yesterday.

Another 14 crewmen were rescued and four are undergoing treatment at a hospital in Yemen, he said.

YOUR STAR TODAY

This isn’t a good day to plan or start a trip by air. Wait a few days if you

can. However, if you must confirm plans now, travel light, check all arrangements for accommodation and collect phone num-bers for those you intend to meet. Confusion, delays, and misplaced bags could otherwise result. Take a book, music, and chocolate!

ARIES20th March - 20th April

You might want to start a new creative project, and several ideas

may float through your head. How-ever, you might not be able to decide which one should you choose. Sit down, think about it and then do something else. Think about it again tomorrow. It may be difficult to stay focused on anything right now.

LEO 20th July - 20th Aug

Today you could feel especially ad-venturous. You might be tempted to

take part in risky adventures like hik-ing in the wilderness. This isn’t a good day for it. Plan a trip for the near future if you want to, but today it’s better to sublimate your adventur-ous nature by reading thrillers, watching spy movies, or exploring places close to home.

SAGITTARIUS 20th Nov - 20th Dec

Malfunctions on the part of com-puters, ATMs, and phone systems

could interfere with financial transac-tions today. You might have to pay for purchas-es in the old-fashioned way - cash or checks. This isn’t a good day to begin or complete any major financial transactions. There’s too much confusion right now. Wait a few days.

TAURUS 20th April - 20th May

Some equipment at home that you usually take for granted

might go haywire today. More than one machine may not work as well as it usually does. This could prove frus-trating, but don’t get impatient and fix it yourself. Call a professional or things could get even more fouled up than they are.

VIRGO20th Aug - 20th Sept

You may have been exercising too enthusiastically over the past few

days and today you might wake up with more than your share of muscle aches and pains. You should keep exercising, but tone it down. Go for a little yoga or tai chi, which will enhance fitness with minimal strain. If you can, soak in a warm tub later.

CAPRICORN 20th Dec - 20th Jan

Today you may feel a powerful need to be with friends, but once

you seek them out, you may not en-joy their company much. Someone is in a bad mood, and being with this person could ruin your day. It might be better to take some time for yourself. This will enable you to in-crease your self-confidence.

GEMINI 20th May - 20th June

Your communications equip-ment may not be working well

today, Libra. If you absolutely need to reach someone, perhaps the best course of action is to hop in the car and visit them if they live nearby. Otherwise, you may have to wait until everything’s working again. Hang in there, and don’t give up on technology.

LIBRA 20th Sep - 20th Oct

Disturbing occurrences regarding a friend might make you a bit con-

fused, Aquarius. The situation isn’t anything you could have expected, so you and others will try to make sense of it. It should be resolved within the next few days. In the meantime, view it objectively. You might also want to get your mind on something else.

AQUARIUS 20th Jan - 20th Feb

Today family members might be less than honest with you,

particularly regarding working around the house. Don’t be surprised if you hear excuses! This could be irritat-ing, but don’t let it get to you. Let the chores go. Do something you enjoy. It’s more fun than taking out the trash.

CANCER 20th June - 20th July

Confusion surrounds financial matters today. Someone close to

you could be hit with unexpected expenses, and this person might ask you for a loan. You’ll want to help out, but no matter what they say, their situation may not im-prove soon. If you decide to lend the money, accept that you won’t see it again for a while.

SCORPIO 20th Oct - 20th Nov

There could be some confusion, and upset in the air today. There

may be arguments and misunder-standings among friends and family. Try not to add fuel to the fire. If a person is getting a lit-tle hot under the collar, just listen. Be under-standing and empathetic instead of trying to prove that you’re right, especially if you are!

CAPTAINMORGANRESCUESENGLAND

Leeds, UK

England captain Eoin Morgan led his side to a history-making

three-wicket win over Australia in the fourth one-day international at Headingley yesterday to tie the five-match series 2-2.

Morgan made 92 as England successfully chased a total of 300 for only the fourth time in one-day cricket to set up a series decider at Manchester’s Old Trafford on Sunday.

Overhauling the World Cup holders’ 50-over total of 299-7 also surpassed the 270-4 England made in their previous highest one-day run chase in beating Australia in 1997.

Morgan made his third successive half-century as he shared a 91-run partnership with Ben Stokes and 58 with Yorkshire’s Jonny Bairstow as England held their nerve to get home with ten balls to spare in an exciting finish.

Glenn Maxwell’s superb catch at backward point denied Morgan a ninth ODI century as he fell after facing 92 balls and hitting eight fours and two sixes.

Maxwell then took an even better catch, taking the ball in mid-air behind the boundary before throwing it up and completing the catch to remove the hard-hitting Liam Plunkett for 17 when England still needed 18 to win.

But Moeen Ali and David Willey saw England over the line, with Willey hitting John Hastings for

England’s sixth six of the innings to complete victory in the penultimate over.

England had earlier overcome the early loss of opener Alex Hales, whose position on the tour to the United Arab Emirates to face Pakistan later this month must be in doubt due to his poor run of form, to make a positive start to their run chase through Jason Roy and James Taylor.

PerfectionThe pair put on 72 before both

fell in the space of 16 runs to bring together Morgan and Stokes for the decisive partnership.

At the halfway stage of their innings, England had reached 144-3, exactly the same as Australia had, and despite the loss of four further wickets, the home side paced their chase to perfection.

Maxwell and Bailey rebuilt the innings as they shared a fourth-wicket partnership of 137 before Maxwell was bowled by spinner Ali for 85 off 64 balls, including 10 fours and two sixes.

When Bailey then went for 75 at 210-6, Australia were in the midst of a mid-order collapse.

But Wade and Hastings, called up from county cricket with Durham for his first ODI since 2011, counter-attacked as Australia added 89 off the last 10 overs and 65 off the last five.

Wade reached 50 off 26 balls with three fours and three sixes but it was not enough to put Australia out of reach of a resurgent England.

Bahrain Ladies team bowl over Kingdom’s third goldDT News NetworkManama

Bahrain’s Ladies team comprising Noora Majed, Layla Al Janahi, Majeda Taher

and Nadia Al Awadhi (4,264 pin falls, 177.7 average) clinched the gold medal in the ladies team event yesterday at the Seventh Men’s and Third Women’s Arab Bowling Championships at the Ozone Bowling Centre at the Sitra Mall.

This was the Kingdom’s third gold and a triple success for Al Awadhi who has picked up golds in Doubles and the Singles event Topping the averages for Bahrain were Majed (1,156, 192.7) who also had the high game (245), followed by Al Awadhi (1,122, 187.0), Taher (1,034, 172.3) and Al Janahi (952, 158.7).

Bahrain, in the final three games,

extended its overnight three-game lead by a further (10) pin falls and Egypt comprised of Sara Gamal, Hala Khafagy, Hala Sharawy and Ali Mohamed (3,998, 166.6) had to settle for the runner-up spot and a silver medal.

Bronze medal and the second runners-up were Iraq comprising Muna Khosho Bools, Shamis Abdulhussein, Diana Abdulrahman and Alaa Al Chalabi (3,853, 161.5).

Fourth to sixth places went to Oman (3,802, 158.4), UAE (3797, 158.2) and Kuwait (3,655, 152.3) respectively.

Meanwhile in the men’s trios UAE’s Hussain Al Suwaidi, Shaker Ali Hassan and Nayrf Eqab (3,872, 215.1) combined held onto their overnight lead and finished with the gold.

De Gea does a U-turn, signs with Man UManchester

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea,

who came within minutes of joining Real Madrid last week, signed a new four-year contract with the English Premier League Cub yesterday.

The announcement caps a remarkable turn of events after the Spain international was on the verge of signing for the Spanish giants only for the transfer to collapse because of paperwork arriving past the permitted deadline.

United announced on their official Twitter account: “David

de Gea has signed a new four-year contract at #mufc with an option to extend for a further year.”

De Gea, 24, said: “I am delighted to be starting this new chapter in my United career.

“I have always enjoyed playing with these great players in front of our fantastic fans. Manchester United is a special club and Old Trafford is an ideal place for me to continue to develop my career. “I’m looking forward to putting a difficult summer behind me and concentrating on working hard to improve and help my team-mates to be successful.”

Las Vegas

Floyd Mayweather steps into the ring today for what he says will

be the last time, but the final defence of his welterweight world titles has been overshadowed by accusations he violated anti-doping rules.

The unbeaten pound-for-pound king was forced onto the backfoot Thursday after it emerged that he had received an injection of vitamins and minerals on the eve of his superfight with Manny Pacquiao in May, breaking World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) regulations.

The United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) leapt to Mayweather’s defence and the man himself said he was “very proud to be a clean athlete.”

It is hardly the buildup the American would have wanted for his showdown in Las Vegas against the unheralded Andre Berto, with Mayweather going for the magic 49-0 – equaling the record of heavyweight legend Rocky Marciano.

Mayweather, 38, the self-styled “TBE” (“The Best Ever”) is the heavy favourite for the bout at the MGM Grand – Berto has lost three of his last six fights.

Mayweather says that he wants to write his name in the history books before he hangs up his gloves – not that many believe he will really retire and there have been growing rumours of a rematch against Pacquiao.

Mayweather’s critics – and there are plenty of

them –

accuse the American of bigging up the quit talk to drum up interest in a fight against Berto that

has threatened to become a box-office flop: there were still hundreds of tickets available on Thursday.

The claims of doping will only give Mayweather’s critics more ammunition.

Mayweather, the highest-earning sportsman in the world, insists this is it and told reporters in the build-up to the weekend showdown that he would be going for a knockout win – something he has not done since 2011.

“You have fighters that may be faster than me, there are fighters that may hit harder than me, you have fighters who are very athletic, but you don’t have a fighter who can make adjustments like me,” he told the final pre-fight press conference.

“It’s never personal for me, it’s always business. Everyone fights for what they fight for. My thing is this:

I keep my eyes on the prize. I don’t focus on things outside the ring.

I focus on the guy in front of me.”

He added: “I want my legacy to be of a remarkable fighter inside the ring and a great businessman outside of it.”

Virgil Hunter, Berto’s respected coach, talked of

“personal stuff” between the two fighters.

Nothing to lose But there has been a noticeable

lack of trash-talking between the pair and their press conference was

notable for the absence of rancor – though they attempted to inject a bit with an old-fashioned face-off.

Mayweather’s critics have rubbished the fight – for which Berto will pocket $4 million – as just another example of him dodging the best opponents in a packed welterweight division where quality is not in short supply simply to embellish his record.

His fans counter that as the best

boxer of his generation and one of the best defensively of all time Mayweather has earned the right to pick exactly who he chooses.

The alarmingly slow ticket sales, however, and reportedly poor television pay-per-view orders suggest many have had enough of a man who has never been shy to show off his immense wealth and has spent time in jail for one of a strong of domestic violence incidents.

‘finale’

General Santos, Philippines

Philippine boxer Manny Pacquiao called for punishment

and a rematch yesterday after his fierce rival Floyd Mayweather was accused of violating anti-doping rules in the build-up to their mega-fight in May.

The eight-division world champion, who lost a unanimous decision to Mayweather in Las Vegas, urged Nevada sports officials to “impose the appropriate sanction” on the unbeaten American.

Mayweather and the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) have both insisted the boxer’s actions were legal after it emerged he was injected with vitamins and minerals before the fight.

But Pacquiao questioned why USADA only informed the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) about the infusion three weeks after the bout, by which time Mayweather had already received a USADA exemption.

Serena Williams saw her dream of a calendar

R o b e r t a V i n c i

shocked the world number

one to reach the US Open final against

compatriot Flavia Pennetta.

Vinci battled back to stun the three-time defending champion 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, ending Williams’ 33-match US Open win streak and 27-match Grand Slam win streak.

In Saturday’s final, Vinci will face 26th-ranked compatriot Pennetta -- who upset Romania’s second-

ranked Simona Halep 6-1, 6-3 -- in the first

all-Italian Grand Slam women’s final in the Open

Era.“I think she played out

of her mind. I don’t think I played that bad. I think she just played really well,” said Williams. “She played the best tennis of her career.”

It was a shocking end to Williams’ run at not only a sweep of the year’s four major titles, a feat that hasn’t been done since Steffi Graf’s 1988 effort, but her bid for a 22nd Grand Slam title to match Graf’s Open Era career record and a fifth Slam crown in a row.

“I don’t want to talk about how disappointing it

is for me,” said Williams in a brief post-match

news conference.

“I don’t feel pressure. I never felt pressure. I never felt that pressure to win here. I said that from the beginning.”

Vinci was overjoyed by her shock win.

“It’s an incredible moment for me,” Vinci said. “It’s like a dream. I’m in the final. I beat Serena. It’s an amazing moment. It’s incredible.

“It’s I think the best moment of my life.”

Vinci apologized to the crowd for ending Williams’ Grand Slam sweep dream.

“Sorry for the American people, for Serena, for the Grand Slam and everything. Today is my day. Sorry guys.”

Vinci said she never expected to win after losing four prior matches

against Williams without taking a set. “No, really, it’s true,” she said. “When I wake up, I say, ‘I have a

semi final today. I play Serena. Try to enjoy.’ I didn’t expect that I win.”

In the matchup of first-time Slam finalists, Vinci has a 4-5 career mark against Pennetta, who took just 59 minutes to dispatch Halep.

“It’s amazing,” Pennetta said. “I didn’t think to be so far in the tournament. I played really well. I tried to play every match the best I can from the first one, don’t worry about the draw and focus on the things I have to do on the court. And here I am.”

Williams broke Vinci three times in taking the first set after only 31 minutes.

“I was serving and thinking, ‘Oooh, it’s impossible,” Vinci said.

Williams fell behind triple break point in the first game of the second set but rescued them all to hold. Vinci reached triple break point again in the fifth game and Williams, after saving two with her ninth and 10th aces of the match, fired a backhand wide to surrender the break and a 3-2 lead.

Vinci held from there to force a third set, saving a break point with a net cord winner in the final game.

Williams had two break points on Vinci in the eighth game but sent forehands long and wide and a backhand return wide to hand Vinci a 5-3 lead. Williams held but could not threaten Vinci in the last game, falling after two hours on the Italian’s forehand drop volley winner.

PACQUIAO WANTS A MAYWEATHER REMATCH

SERENA FAILS TO CRACK VINCI CODEWilliams’ calendar Slam bid foiled by valiant Vinci

The Silent GrafNitin Sisupalan/[email protected]

Tennis legend Steffi Graf remained quite silent on

Friday night as the current World No. 1 Serena William’s dreams of completing the Calendar Grand Slam came crashing at the hands of Roberta Vinci.

The shocking exit of the 33-year-old gusty American, who already holds all four major titles, failed to evoke any response from the part of Steffi Graf – who was the last tennis star to complete the Calendar Grand Slam in the year 1988.

This became evident when Steffi Graf failed to update her Facebook account after William’s failure to tuck in the semi-final meeting with Vinci with an impressive win to share history with Graf.

Steffi Graf’s Facebook account, interestingly last updated in August, ran everything from family visits to pets. The account, however, was barren with any update on the on-going US Open.

Downplaying the pressure, Williams was earlier quoted as saying: “There’s always another record. There’s always another person to catch.” The Williams-Vinci meeting was a high-volt affair with both players taking their grunts to the highest decibels.

Williams, of course, played well. But, Vinci played better as the crowd went hoo-haa with every stroke the players played even as Steffi Graf failed to take cognisance of the historic event in her Facebook account!
