BAIPHIL: BUILDING CAPACITY TOWARDS FINANCIAL INCLUSION

AND INTEGRATION

We began the year with the realization that BAIPHIL needs to continue its quest for excellence and transform itself to a stronger and more focused organization. We summarized the roadmap to this transformational journey in the acronym B.E.S.T. (Build, Engage,

Strengthen, and Transform). As we come to the end of our Diamond Jubilee, on behalf of the Directors, Advisers, and Officers of this term, allow me to share the following accomplishments:

BUILD

Objective: To establish an organization that can live up to its mission of supporting the banking industry in enhancing productivity and keeping abreast with relevant developments through continuing education, research and information exchange. As a training institute, essential to the fulfillment of our goals is to have the best possible infrastructure, content and process. Accomplishments: 1. New BAIPHIL Office – After several years, a long-cherished dream was finally realized last June 14 with the inauguration of BAIPHIL’s new office at Unit 2103, The Peak Tower, Leviste St., Makati. The new office better represents BAIPHIL as a premiere learning institution for bankers, and can serve as Training Center for small group seminars. 2. Training Needs Analysis (TNA) Survey – The first BAIPHIL TNA survey in recent history was released to industry members to enable the Institute to prepare a learning program for the coming years that will be most relevant and useful to the achievement of the banks’ business and organizational goals. 3. Certification Course programs – The groundwork for the creation of specialized and holistic development programs was laid this year with discussions with regional and global counterparts.

Accomplishment Report FY 2015-2016 Accomplishments: • Secretariat Staff

1. Established the Long Service Awards, to recognize and reward staff who have remained committed to the BAIPHIL for several years. First recipient was Tess Limqueco, who has been with us for 22 years now; 2.Established Transportation Allowance, as an additional benefit to staff, to at least keep them whole in consideration of the transfer to the new office; and 3. Upgraded pay of Secretariat staff to market levels. • Members

BAIPHIL ends this FY with 167 Associate Members, 60 Institutional Members and 76 Associate Life/Sustaining Life members. 31 new Associate Members and 1 new institutional member were inducted this FY. However, Associate Membership increased only by 4 pax, while Institutional Membership declined by 1 because of the merger and closure of some banks. To improve on our engagement with members, various programs were launched this year including the following: 1. Birthday cards – The Board of Directors (BoD) sent personally signed birthday cards to members to affirm that their BAIPHIL family remembers them on their special day. 2. Induction program – The BoD conducted separate induction programs for big batches of inductees to enable them to better appreciate their membership in BAIPHIL 3. Bowling Tournament – We did away with the usual Badminton Tournament which had very little participation from our members, and had our first Bowling Tournament, which was very well received by members. We also continued the following activities: Monthly General Membership Meetings – We had a very good mix of interesting guest speakers who shared their wisdom and

insights with us, including: o Politics - Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, Congresswoman Leni Robredo, Senator Francis Escudero o Business - Engr. Dado Banatao, Mr. Mario Berta o Subject Matter Experts – Atty. JJ Disini, Atty. Rudy Fernandez; and o BSP - Governor Amando M. Tetangco, Jr., Deputy Governor Nestor Espenilla, Jr. and Deputy Governor Diwa Guinigundo

Publications - We continued to update members on legal, regulatory and market developments with our regular publications. As of June 2016, we had:

BAIPHIL on the Go (Newsletter) - 10 issues BAIPHIL Market Watch - 243 issues BAIPHIL Soft Empowerment Series - 24 issues LegReg Updates - 18 issues

Accomplishment Report FY 2015-2016

For the first time, the publications are now posted at the BAIPHIL website, allowing members, as well as the public, easy and constant access. Socials - Aside from the Christmas Party and Bowling tournament, we also introduced mini-fellowship events during the GMMs. We

also had a grand celebration of our Diamond Jubilee in appreciation of, among others, the members of BAIPHIL throughout our history.

We are encouraged by the results of our engagement initiatives with our members, as our efforts appear to be effective on the basis of the following: Higher Monthly Attendance – Attendance in GMMs is up on average by 20% from 76 pax/GMM to 92 pax/GMM

Improved Google Analytics Results - Views on BAIPHIL’s website are up yoy:

• Partners

BSP – The BSP has been a very generous partner to BAIPHIL, particularly in providing SME support for our seminar offerings, as well as advice on our projects, such as FEP, TNA, and certification course.

Banking Associations – We participated in the ASEAN Banking Council Meeting in June 2015 in Singapore, as part of the Bankers Association of the Philippines contingent. We also took part in the Association of Asia Pacific Banking Institutes (APABI) Conference held in Delhi, India in September 2015, where we established important contacts with colleagues across the region for potential partnerships.

Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) – We are pleased to tap new speakers, both local and foreign, to share their knowledge and expertise to the banking community. Our SMEs are critical partners without whom BAIPHIL will not be able to fulfill its advocacy to uplift the professional standards in the PH Banking Industry. In appreciation of the contributions of our SMEs and other partners, we dedicated a portion of our 75th Anniversary Night to recognize and thank them for their support to the Institute’s various programs.

Banking Institutes in Asia Pacific – We reached out to BAIPHIL’s counterparts across Asia (particularly, the Asian Institute of Chartered Bankers, Indian Institute of Banking and Finance, and Taiwan Academy of Banking and Finance (TABF) to discuss potential areas for partnership and cooperation.

OWWA, LGUs and PACSB, we held the 4th Festival of Bank Chorales in December 2016. As of June 2016, we have conducted seven (7) FEP runs and reached out to 562 participants, including parents and teachers of public school children, urban poor, college students, and OFWs and their beneficiaries. 2. Corporate Social Responsibility – Conducted a Medical Mission in Bayambang, Pangasinan that benefited 1,023 patients and continued the scholarship program of 3 underprivileged children of Tahanan ng Panginoon

STRENGTHEN Objective: To stabilize and enhance BAIPHIL’s infrastructure, internal governance and visibility. Accomplishments: 1. Housekeeping Initiatives - Continued housekeeping initiatives to improve on BAIPHIL’s procedures and infrastructure, particularly following the Internal Audit review. 2. Outsourcing - Strengthened organizational support with the outsourcing of the accounting supervisory function. 3. Cost Savings Initiatives

- Rationalized Membership Directory – by issuing only one directory for FY 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 to ensure that it comes out at the start of the reference FY, rather than at the end. - E-versions of BAIPHIL on the GO - which saved the Institute printing costs. 4. Improved Visibility

- Newspaper Supplements – published 6-page special newspaper supplements on the occasion of both the Induction of Directors & Officers for FY 2015-2016 and BAIPHIL Week, which featured significant content on BAIPHIL’s history and role in the industry. - Launched digital version of BAIPHIL on the GO - Improved Content of BAIPHIL Website – to include a tab on its regular publications (i.e., BMW, LegReg Updates and BAIPHIL on the Go). 5. Amended BAIPHIL’s Articles of Incorporation and By-Laws to reflect changes in its office address

TRANSFORM Objective: To future proof BAIPHIL to preserve its legacy and ensure it achieves its long term objective “To be the training institute of choice for banking professionals in the Philippines and the Asia Pacific”. Accomplishments: 1. Reorganized the BAIPHIL Secretariat – Sourced and hired a full time Training Head, to better address BAIPHIL’s primary mandate as a training institute.

2. Reorganized the Education and Training Program – Dismantled the BAIPHIL Education and Training Institute (BETI) which was a centralized platform that had key man risks, and set up the following specialized Course Committees each led by at least one Director and dedicated Chairperson, and composed of SME members & champions. Notwithstanding that this year was a transition year, the reorganization proved successful. For Fiscal Year 2015-2016 58 runs were conducted, with a total of 3,298 participants. Target net support generation reached P4.33mio, 159% higher than target. 3. Rationalized Fee Structures – Approved and secured approval to raise training and membership fees, in view of more expensive overhead for our seminars and higher administrative costs in maintaining BAIPHIL’s office and Secretariat, which has more than doubled over the past ten years. The measure allowed the organization to have more stable financials, and dedicate investment in its training and course certification programs, as well as improve the pay of its staff. 4. Brand Standardization – Updated the BAIPHIL’s logo and standardized its use. With 75 years to its history, BAIPHIL has built considerable goodwill. We realized the need to preserve and further enhance that goodwill through the proper use of BAIPHIL’s logo and branding. The BAIPHIL logo was updated to look more confident and assertive and, with the help of a consultant, branding rules are being standardized. To those who joined us in our transformational journey, and contributed to the fulfillment of these projects, our sincerest gratitude! Rhoneil S. Fajardo President FY 2015-2016 30 June 2016

Brand Standardization

This year, the BAIPHIL Board of Directors unanimously decided to take the organization's brand to a new level with the BAIPHIL Brand Standardization Project. The PR & Publications Committee gracefully took on the daunting challenge, with the assistance of a logo and branding consultant who has worked for a range of multinational and homegrown consumer and business brands. The Committee is headed by Director-in-Charge, Evangeline L. Salazar-Nevado, and Chairperson, Ma. Bernadette T. Ratcliffe.

The BAIPHIL Brand Standardization Project aims to cultivate effective visual recall of the brand among the members of the local and regional banking and finance industry -- visual recall that will match the legacy that the organization has built and continues to build. With 75 years to its history, BAIPHIL has established considerable goodwill over the years. The Board realized the need to preserve and further enhance that goodwill through the proper use of BAIPHIL’s logo and branding. The project began with an updated look to BAIPHIL’s logo. As revised, the logo now looks more confident and assertive, befitting BAIPHIL’s image as the premier training institute for bankers. The new BAIPHIL office at the Peak Tower showcases the new logo, as well as an artistic interpretation thereof at the entrance, as approved by the Board. The second phase of the project is the development of a comprehensive Brand Bible, which will serve as the guideline for the usage and application of the BAIPHIL logo, with the proportions, colors, and other possible applications clearly prescribed to ensure consistency across all collateral materials and correspondence. Already, templates for the new letterhead, power point presentation, and communication materials have been finalized. The project is targeted to be completed before the end of July 2016; just in time as we usher the beginning of BAIPHIL’s new fiscal year.

Featuring: PR & Publications Committee

For fiscal year 2015-2016, the PR and Publications Committee set out to create renewed awareness of and excitement in Baiphil as the organization prepares to celebrate its Diamond Jubilee. As it turned out, this was also a year of many historic firsts for BAIPHIL and the Committee.

Upon the request of BAIPHIL President, Atty. Rhoneil S. Fajardo, PR & Publications Committee initiated the revision and update of the Membership Directory. For the first time, the directory featured two BAIPHIL periods: 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 and incorporated many changes, including the look and feel, to properly reflect the Institute as a dynamic organization. The joint publication for two terms not only served as a cost saving initiative but also ensured that the directory is distributed during the start of a fiscal year instead of after. For this FY, the directory was completed and issued in August 2015, just a month after the term of the incumbent Board commenced. Henceforth, the annual directory will be handled by the Membership Committee. With a mandate to serve as the official Editorial Board for all publications and other communication platforms, the Committee rolled out 10 issues of BAIPHIL on the Go!. However, for the first time, the publication comes out in digital format saving BAIPHIL printing costs. The new format also allowed BAIPHIL on the Go! to be posted in our website, another first. This allowed wider and easier access on BAIPHIL updates to our members, partner organizations in the banking industry here and abroad, regulators and the general public, as each issue featured the speeches of guest speakers at the General Membership Meetings, various activities of Baiphil, upcoming seminars and Committee programs and plans for the year. The Baiphil on the Go! also featured updates from the President, as well as views on banking trends and linkages fostered with other industry organizations in the ASEAN region, demonstrating the continuing relevance of Baiphil to its many stakeholders.

With the tremendous support from our member-banks and the participation of BAIPHIL's past presidents, PR and Publications also successfully published two newspaper supplements in Philippine Star in commemoration of the Induction of the incoming Board of Directors and Officers and the Baiphil Week. At a record 6-page each, the supplements gave the public a glimpse of what Baiphil is all about and how it has contributed to the continuing development and capacity building of the banking industry over the last 75 years.

Capping the activities of the PR and Publications Committee for this fiscal year is the on-going Brand Standardization Project which aims to re-shape the Baiphil brand into a new level of recall and organizational identity. Working closely with the Board of Directors and a branding consultant, this project covers all forms of media and communication channels to ensure consistency in the application of Baiphil's brand and logo. More details on the project are written in another article in this issue. The PR & Publications Committee is headed by Director-in-Charge, Evangeline L. Salazar-Nevado and Chairperson, Ma. Bernadette T. Ratcliffe. The members are: Agnes B. Santos, Cynthia B. Corsino, Rosalina DL.P. Magat, and Manolo M. Martinez.

BAIPHIL Grand Fellowship Night

The Grand Fellowship Night (GFN) is one of most anticipated BAIPHIL events as it caps the fiscal year's activities, showcases the talents of our colleagues, and acknowledges the contributions of BAIPHIL’s institutional and individual members, as well as partners, to the successes of the year. The GFN is also the occasion for BAIPHIL’s president to report on the accomplishments during the term, which were made possible by the teamwork and dedication of the Institute’s members, partners and Secretariat team. Dubbed as the Diamond Masquerade Ball in reference to our 75th Anniversary, the GFN this year had members donning masks of various designs, lending mystery to the event. Faces, however, were soon unmasked to reveal the true gems of BAIPHIL, hardworking men and women, committees and institutions, who made fiscal year 2015-2016, BAIPHIL’s Diamond Jubilee, a year to remember. Here's to conquering higher summits in the service of the banking industry and the Filipino people through BAIPHIL.... Cheers and Congratulations!

President’s Corner

Atty. Rhoneil S. Fajardo

BAIPHIL President FY 2015-2016

Dear Friends in BAIPHIL, Today is the last day of FY 2015-2016, our Diamond Jubilee. And I think that many will agree that it has been a very significant year for BAIPHIL. It was meaningful not only because we marked a milestone in reaching 75 years since our founding in 1941, but moreso because we realized that we are now an even stronger institution despite the passage of time and are better positioned to achieve greater success. As I look back at the past months, I am reminded of the time when the directors and committee chairpersons held a planning session in May 2015. On hindsight, I believe that the collective experience of that occasion set the tone for the rest of the year. Aware as I was that I had taken on the formidable role of leading BAIPHIL in its 75th year, I took the planning session as an opportunity for the leadership team to have an introspective discussion on the Institute’s mission, vision and objectives. It was a very engaging discussion, to say the least, as we tackled very sensitive issues that challenged the status quo. But as we freely exchanged ideas and views, it also proved to be most cathartic. What impressed me most during the discussions was that despite the differences in opinions, people were open-minded and level-headed. Thus, while we agreed to be mindful of our history, we were also one in the belief that for BAIPHIL to move forward, we must be willing to try new approaches and to discard policies and practices which do not contribute to the attainment of our objective to be the training institute of choice for banking professionals in the Philippines and the Asia Pacific. Freed from the shackles of the past but joined by a commonality of objectives, we adopted a pioneering attitude, ready to blaze new trails and go into unchartered territories. We thus ended the planning session in high spirits and with a renewed sense of purpose for the organization. To be sure, the journey has not been easy. It was full of challenges and frustrations, particularly with the limited time, manpower and resources. We were ambitious with our targets, yet only had 12 months to achieve them. But it is these constraints which made the accomplishment of our goals more fulfilling, and drove us to persevere as we reorganized the Secretariat and our Education & Training program, rationalized our fee structure, searched for and built our new office, strengthened our branding, improved the welfare of our staff, and enhanced the engagement with our stakeholders, among others. As we come to the end of this term, I thank everyone, particularly the directors, advisers, chairpersons and members, who believed in our cause to continue the quest for excellence and joined us in the transformational journey under the B.E.S.T. program. I was blessed to have a strong team of committed persons who are as inspired to make the most of the opportunity given to us to lead the Institute. I am also grateful to have the support of people who, though not members of BAIPHIL, still contributed a lot to the fulfillment of our goals. And to God, who gave us the strength, faith and courage, our eternal praise! Our 75th year has come to a close, but today marks only the end of a fiscal year. The future of BAIPHIL still beckons, let’s welcome it together!
