How long have you beenbaking for?

I’ve been baking for about 20 minutes. I just put (what Iassume to be) a cake in the oven. Is that where they go?

Who taught you how tobake?

When Bruce Wayne (that’s batman) saw injustice in hiscity, he went to train with Kung Fu people in themountains or Russia or whatever. In all aspects of mylife, I try to follow the example graciously set to us byBruce Wayne. With that in mind, I went to the snowy

mountains of Russia or whatever. It’s too cold there tobake and they kept karate chopping my soufflé :(

Why do you enjoy it? I think what I like most about baking is using eggs. Toooften in my life have I seen the domesticated chicken,and I’ve wanted to kill its babies exclusively in aid ofdessert catering.

How often do you bake? Just the once for now.

How wide is your bakingrepertoire?

If I stack all my baking trays together side by side -across the kitchen work top - it’s very wide. I think arepertoire is part of grill isn’t it? I don’t have one.

Yes!

If so, why is it special?How did it become yoursignature bake? Anybackground / storiesconnected with it?

It isn’t special, it’s just that it’s (vaguely) a cake in the shape of my signature. I feel as if I’ve misunder stood the question?

Do you have any familystories about baking? eg.memories, familyfavourites, recipeshanded down thegenerations, bakinganecdotes

I was raised in Victorian England, in a workhouse with all theother orphans. I soon got a taste for gin – they’d give it to usevery night on account of making us sleep right better it did. Ishudder to think what would happen if I’d have had to staythere but as luck would have it Mrs Lovett down the streetneeded some help with her pie shop / gentleman’s barber

shop. She’d bake pies all day she would! They wouldn’t half taste funny though, on account of her putting so much peoplein them from what Mr Todd had killed upstairs.

Have you ever had anybaking disasters?

Ah. Well it was 1969 and I was travelling across the world. Byhappenstance I had found a foothold in what was then theKingdom of Libya. I met an enterprising young fellow namedMuammar Gaddafi and he was having a good old chin wagover some fish or whatever and it occurred to him he hadn’t

prepared dessert. He seemed embarrassed so I offered tomake a soufflé, it was the least I could do given the kindnesshe’d shown me. So I went to the kitchen and about 90 minutes / 2 days later - give or take – I re-emerged with dessert.

As polite as ever he said “Thanks for the soufflé Tom!”, and Ireplied “Oh, man that’s coo’”, and he said “Military coup ?” andI said, “No I mean, ‘that’s coo’’, like ‘that’s cool’.” – he left thetable and said he had some thinking to do.

I’m in a house share with other students. Sometimesthere’s so much baking going on you can’t move for allthe pastry.

What other hobbies doyou have?

I like to fill in BBC game show application forms withabsolutely no intention of ever earning a place on the

show. Also I like to read and goad chickens.

What is your greatestambition in life?

To be a robot.

And instead of where the stomach would be it would bean Easy Bake Oven.

What do you think hasbeen your greatestachievement in life sofar?

Successfully and deviously avoiding a £70 fine for publicurination.

I once put an apple pie on the window ledge outside tocool off, like they do in the cartoons. Anyway someonegot a whiff off it and starting floating towards it like in thecartoons; I think he wanted some of it. Anyway he washalf way across the road when he got hit by a car – thedoctors say his legs won’t ever recover but I still don’tthink it’s my fault.

The Great British Bake Off Application Rules

1. You must be aged 16 or above on 1st February 2012.

2. You must be resident of the UK (inc Isle of Man and Channel Islands).

3. You must not have any catering NVQ or other catering qualifications unlessacquired over 10 years ago.

4. You cannot have ever worked full time as a baker, cook or chef.5. Your main source of income must not derive from commercial baking in a

professional environment (restaurant, hotels, canteens, shops etc). The term‘baking’ refers to the preparation and oven cooking of flour based goods such asbread, cakes, pastries, pies, tarts, and biscuits. It does not refer to other foodforms that can be oven cooked, or other methods of cooking.

6. You must be able to commit to all the filming days required which are currentlyexpected to be during March, April, May 2012.

7. You must not be or be closely related to a member of the BBC or LoveProductions staff or anyone connected with the programme.

8. You cannot have been convicted of any serious crime. Details of unspent

convictions should be listed on the application form.9. If you are chosen to participate in the Programme, you agree to authorise Love

Productions to conduct background checks in order to verify any of theinformation you have supplied and you agree to provide them with any assistanceor further information necessary to do this.

10. Submission of an application form and compliance with the above does not in anyway constitute an offer to appear on the programmes.

11. When selecting applicants for ‘The Great British Bake Off’ the following will betaken into account: skill, enthusiasm, drive, love of baking, lively characters whoare comfortable being filmed. Initial selection will be based on the applicationforms and telephone interviews. In addition the Producers may (but may not)

invite short listed applicants to attend an interview at their discretion. We will belooking for a mix of finalists to reflect the range in age, location, gender anddiversity of amateur bakers in Britain.

12. Love Productions have no obligation to produce the programme and even if theprogramme is made there will be no obligation on the BBC to broadcast ortransmit or otherwise exploit the programme or include you or any filming in theprogramme.

13. By submitting your application form you grant to Love Productions (and itslicensees and assigns including the BBC) all necessary rights and consents forthe full period of copyright (and afterwards so far as possible in perpetuity) tocopy edit and/or use at their sole discretion the application form for any purposesconnected with the programme, the promotion and advertising thereof and allother rights (including all allied and ancillary rights) by any means and in any andall media now known or hereafter invented throughout the world.

14. If you are selected to take part in the programme you agree to sign a contributorconsent form and grant all necessary rights.

15. Application forms will be retained by Love Productions and by submitting yourapplication you agree that they may share the information with the BBC. LoveProductions and the BBC will use your personal details only for the purposes ofconsidering your application for this series and for potential future series, foradministration and for related services should you be successful. Your personalinformation will not be passed to anyone else except where we are obliged to doso. The information will be kept securely and in accordance with the Data

Protection Act 1998 and other applicable legislation.

16. The Production team's decisions regarding selection to the programmes areentirely at their discretion and are final.
