BALANCE ( STATIC AND DYNAMIC )

PRESENTED BY :ADIL ALI &DEEPANJALI SHARMAJamia Hamdard UniversityBPT 3rd year

WHAT IS BALANCE ???

Balance - Process of maintaining bodys COG (Center of Gravity) within base of support.

OR

Ability to align body segments against gravity to maintain or move the body within the available base of support without falling .

Bodys COG rests slightly above the pelvis

FACTORS AFFECTING BALANCE

1. CENTRE OF MASS

2. CENTRE OF GRAVITY

3. MOMENTUM

4. BASE OF SUPPORT

5. GROUND REACTION FORCE

3 Components of the Body that helps maintaining balance :

Sensory detection of body motions.VisualVestibular Somatosensory inputs

Integration of sensorimotor information within the CNS

Execution of musculoskeletal responses

TYPES OF BALANCE CONTROLSTATIC BALANCE CONTROL&DYNAMIC BALANCE CONTROL

BALANCE CONTROL

To maintain balance, the body must continually adjust its position in space to keep the COM of an individual over the BOS or to bring the COM back to that position after a perturbation.

STATIC BALANCEto maintain a stableantigravity position while at rest such as when standing and sitting;

STATIC BALANCE CONTROL

STATIC BALANCE TESTSTORK STAND TESTFUNCTIONAL REACH TEST

DYNAMIC BALANCEto stabilize the bodywhen the support surface is moving or when the body ismoving on a stable surface such as sit-to-stand transfers or walking.

DYNAMIC BALANCE CONTROLStrategy involved is stepping strategy.Base of support changes.Any kind of perturbation (anterior & posterior) makes the body to change its position in order to maintain its balance .The amount of perturbation is usually higher than the amount in ankle and hip strategies.

DYNAMIC BALANCE TESTINGTimed up and go test

Star excursion balance test

Walk and Talk test

Hop test

Timed balance beam walks (eyes open & closed)

TIMED UP AND GO TEST

Sit to stand.Walk 3 metres.Turn around.Walk 3 metres.Sit down.
