Term One has absolutely flown by and we have packed a lot into 11 weeks. The last few weeks have been particularly busy with Harmony Day, Finlayson Sports, Cross Country and the STEM Camp. Thank you to our parents and grandparents for driving our students to the various activities. Without your help and support, these events wouldn’t happen. Another big thank you goes to our P&C. Their catering expertise is incredible and we certainly set a high standard at the events we host.

I would like to wish all our families and friends a very happy Easter. Stay safe in the holidays and I can’t wait to be back at school, ready for Term Two.

Students return for Term Two on Tuesday 30th April.

Kindergarten/Year 1 - Owls Mrs Purvis The K/1 Owls classroom is an exciting place to be. The students are all working very hard in all KLA’s and showing pleasing progress. I am inspired each day by the student’s enthusiasm, dedication and commitment to their learning.

Number of the Day One of the highlights of the day in our classroom is to discuss the number of the day. We have been counting how many days the students have been at school and representing that number in a variety of ways in our maths lessons. The students have been required to draw tally marks, represent the number in a ten frame, write the number, write the word, represent the number as tens and ones and find the number on the number line. When we reach 100 days we will have a class party to celebrate the occasion.

Kindergarten Sound of the Week Each week the students in Kindergarten focus on a specific sound as part of their explicit and systematic phonics program. So far they have been learning the sounds- s,a,t,p,i and n. The students thoroughly enjoy singing the Jolly Phonics rhymes that accompany the sounds and completing a range of fun, engaging multi-sensory activities to develop an in depth understanding of each sound.

As part of our weekly sound work the students put on special glasses and become sound investigators. They are required to write down as many words from around the classroom that they can find that start with the focus sound.

Homework Well done to all students for their commitment to completing their homework each week. Some students have already reached 25 nights reading and I am sure a few more will reach this milestone this week. Can you please remind your child to return their readers each Friday so that I can send home their new readers? If your child is able to recognise all of their sight words instantly on their cards and in their readers please let me know and I will send home the next set of words.

Music This term in music the students in K/1 Owls have been learning the song ‘We’re going on a bear hunt’. As a class they had to experiment with a variety of instruments to find the right sound for each part of the song. The students did a marvellous job performing this song at the assembly, in Week 6.

Science – K/2 This term the students in K-2 have been completing a science unit called ‘Weather in my World’. As part of this unit the students have been learning how to describe the daily weather outside, learnt about weather symbols used in society, investigated temperature and identified appropriate clothing for different weather conditions. The students are all enjoying working in their collaborative learning teams to complete their science investigations each week.

Buddy Reading On Friday afternoon after lunch all students take part in buddy reading. A student in K-2 reads with a student in 3-6. All the students thoroughly enjoy this activity and it allows students to practise skills and strategies taught in their guided reading sessions.

Year 2/3 - Astronauts Mrs Lenehan What a busy first term. Students in years 2/3 have been learning how to structure, plan and write narratives using sizzling starters and dynamic dialogue. Students have been working really hard to make their writing more exciting and descriptive. We have been focusing a lot on basic sentence structure and punctuation. This is an area for improvement, to ensure all punctuation is correct in our writing. Students have been learning their weekly spelling words through a variety of different learning activities.

Emily & Isabella

Throughout numeracy students have been continuing to learn their multiplication tables through skip counting games, writing them daily and hands on games. It is important for all students to continue to learn these at home as well as in the classroom. Students have been working out addition and subtraction problems using many different strategies.

Jay Polly

Year 3 have started to look at some practice NAPLAN past papers. These are really important, so students can become familiar with the language used in the questions. These are available online, so I would recommend printing some off for your child/children.

All students had something in the Guyra Show for Visual Arts, whether it was a drawing, painting, sculpture or fibre. Well done.

STEM with Years 3-6 Students in Years 3-6 participated in a STEM activity where they were given jellybeans and toothpicks to construct a tower that was tall, stable and strong. Students planned and engineered their tower. They needed to think about what shapes were strong and how they were going to make their tower in the time frame they had. Congratulations to Bryce, Hayden and Rubi for winning the strongest stable tower and Ursula and Ella for the tallest tower.

Brock & Scarlett Ella & Ursula Reminder to parents – please make sure your child/children come to school with their belongings ready to learn. Numerous students DO NOT have a lead pencil!!

Year 4 - 6 Waterfalls Ms Edwards History with Miss Mitchell: As part of our Australia Changing Faces and Places unit, students have had the opporunity to research a famous Aboriginal Australian and then present a speech to the class. Over the last couple of week, we have been researching a special day from another country/culture. For example, Ramadan, Hanukkah, St Patrick’s Day or Bastille Day. We will then present our research to the class.

In English, we have foccused on narrative writing and persuasive texts. The students have been learning how to develop a plot for a narrative which includes a setting, characters and a problem to be solved. They have used techniques such as sizzling starts and ban the boring to create exciting, attention-grabbling narratives. We are learning about the structure of persuasive texts and how we can improve our writing using persuasive language features and devices. As part of our learning, the students have set themselves 3 writing goals. The first is a whole-class goal to construct a well-structured persuasive text. The remaining goals are self-determined, ranging from using correct punctuation to organising their writing into clear, linking paragraphs, and improving proofreading and editing skills.

In Maths, we have been developing a deeper understanding of strategies we can use in addition and subtraction, particularly mental strategies. We have been learning about daylight saving times and 24 hour time. We have also been learning our times tables as part of our weekly homework and we are tested on them every week. Please encourage your child to practise their tables at home and commit them to memory.

We have been working with Mrs Lenehan and Year 2 and 3 on a STEM activity to produce digital information in the form of a news report. The students have enjoyed working together to write their scripts, plan and film productions and solve a range of issues along the way.

I’m sure our class is looking forward to the holidays and coming back to school in Term 2 rejuvenated, excited and ready for a full term of learning and growing.

Concragulations to…

We were lucky enough to have Matt McKenzie and Lenore from Taronga Zoo visit our school.

Students were very excited to see the animals that came along. We all learnt facts about The Green Tree Frog, Ring Tailed Possum, Stick Insect, Python and Blue Tongue Lizard. All students were able to interact with the animals, as well as touch the python. It was a great experience and we thank both of them very much for visiting.

STEM Excursion at Thalgarrah

This week we have been at the STEM Camp at Thalgarrah. On Wednesday K – 2 students engaged in coding activities with Dr Mitch Parkes and Dr Jo Bird from UNE. Stage 2 students were with Mel Wood from STEMShare. They learnt about virtual reality and augmented reality over the two days of the camp. They then had to create a lego model of an Easter hat that their Dash Robot could wear and code their Dash to participate in an Easter Hat Parade. The Stage 3 students were with Mrs Maria Russel, the eGATS co-ordinator from Armidale City Public School. Maria had devised activities around a rescue mission. The students had to create a scenario, build it and then use coding to perform the rescue. A big thank you to Matt McKenzie, Principal at Thalgarrah for co-ordinating the camp and also to Maree for her amazing catering and organisational skills.

Easter Hat Parade

We have finished Term 1 with a wonderful celebration of Easter, with the feature being our final assembly for Term 1 and our Easter Hat Parade. Thank you to mums, dads and friends that helped with our hat creations and for coming along today and celebrating with us.
