Balgowlah North PS A love of learning Manning Street, North Balgowlah T 9949 4499 F 9949 7832 E [email protected] Term 2 Week 10 Wednesday, 29 June 2016 Term 2, Week 10 Holidays This Friday, 1st July is the last day of Term Two. It has been another busy, successful term and I thank the teachers and the children for their efforts. The teachers resume on Monday 18 th July for a day of professional learning and the children return on Tuesday 19 th July. Don’t forget to vote this Saturday, 2nd July and be sure to pick up a sausage sandwich and a cake or two from our P&C volunteers. My thanks to all the parents who are busily baking as we speak. More cake boxes are available from the school office, if required. Enjoy the break, we’ll cross our fingers for some glorious blue skies. Attendance We expect all children to attend up to and including this Friday. Department of Education guidelines for supporting student attendance note that regular attendance and engagement in educational programs is strongly linked to the likelihood of students experiencing success in learning. Students who have poor patterns of attendance are at risk of not achieving their potential and are disadvantaged in the quality of choices they are able to make in later life. Whilst some children have older siblings who attend schools which finish prior to our holidays, we require our students to be here at school. Should your child be absent from school, an explanation for absence must be provided to the school within seven days. For absences over 15 school days, an application for extended leave must be lodged with me. Semester One Reports You will receive your child’s Semester One report this afternoon. The boys and girls should be congratulated for their commitment to learning and their great progress. I think you’ll find the reports to be quite comprehensive and informative. I’d like to thank the teachers for their hard work in producing such quality reports. Playground Equipment We seem to have a large number of pre-schoolers and toddlers in our school grounds of a morning. This is not a problem in itself, but the associated noise levels that come with spirited play on the equipment in our fort area are proving to be a distraction to some of our Kindergarten and Year One classes. Please be mindful of the distraction your pre-school children may be inadvertently causing. Choir and String Group I’d like to wish our string and choir children all the best for their rehearsals at the Salvation Army Centre and Croydon Public School tomorrow. The children will be performing in August as part of the Festival of Instrumental music. This is a fabulous opportunity for the children and I’d like to thank Mrs Malar and Natasha Roumanoff for their dedication to making this happen. Kindergarten Information Evening For those parents who have an additional sibling enrolling in Kindergarten next year, we will be having our Kindergarten Information Evening in our school hall on Wednesday, 27th July from 7pm. Please spread the word to your neighbours who have children enrolling in 2017. Enrolment paperwork can be collected from our school office and should be filled in as soon as possible to help us in our planning for next year. Shade Structure Construction A reminder that our new shade structures will be installed over our two sets of play equipment in the school holidays. Please be careful if you are in or around our school during this construction phase. We will finally have some shade in our playground over the two popular play areas which need it the most. Thanks to the P&C for your financial support and thanks again to the school community for your patience. This year staff are implementing the new NSW History,Geography and Science syllabus documents for the Australian curriculum. This planning time will assist this process and ensure the learning programs are consistent across each grade.

School Bands Shine! It has been such a pleasure to attend many band performances and rehearsals this term. Our Junior, Senior, Concert bands and String ensembles play with much energy and enthusiasm. It really is a toe-tapping experience. Congratulations to the children, who clearly have been spending many hours at home, as well as during their weekly sessions to practice and continually improve their skills. Many thanks to our very talented band conductors, who are the people behind the great improvements we see with our bands. Their enthusiasm for music and for the band is clearly contagious. Our senior string ensemble are travelling to Croydon Public School on Thursday for the combined string rehearsal. I know they will enjoy the day practising with other schools for their performance at the Opera House next term. All students were treated to a fabulous concert on Tuesday by the Balgowlah Boys Band, our Junior Band had the opportunity for Balgowlah Boys to join them for their morning rehearsal. The music was incredibly professional and I’m sure inspiring for all our budding musicians. Assembly We enjoy being able to share and celebrate the efforts and achievements of our students. This Thursday, 29th June, we will be entertained by our Senior Band in our K- 6 assembly. Parents and friends are most welcome to join us, please be seated by 1.45pm in the hall.
