Tanah Lot
Tanah Lot is one of the important directional temples in Bali. The temple is located on a rock just offshore. It is said to be the
work of revered 15th century Hindu priest Nirartha and forms an important element of Balinese spirtualism and mythology. This
is an extremely popular tourist destination and the whole area is often very busy indeed, especially in the late afternoons, pre-
sunset. The area between the car park and the beach adjacent to the temple is a maze of souvenir shops selling just about every
Balinese trinket imaginable.
The captivating Tari Kecak dance, also called ‘the monkey chanting dance’, was created around 1930 and is now internationally
recognised as one of Bali’s top-three signature dances (along with Barong and Legong). It steals the spotlight and is unique in
that it has no other musical background but the chanting of a male chorus intoning a “keh-chack” polyrhythmic sound during
most of the performance. Kecak’s storyline is taken from the Ramayana Hindu epic and it’s on the entertainment schedule of
almost every Balinese arts and culture venue.. Snacks and basic meals are available in some shacks on the Beach.

The area of north-eastern Bali at the Mount Batur caldera, and which encompasses Penelokan, Toya Bungkah, Batur, Kedisan,
Abung, Songan and Kintamani villages, is known widely as just Kintamani. Kintamani, Batur and Penelokan villages sit on the rim
of the huge Batur caldera about 1,500m above sea level, and offer dramatic views of the active volcano Mount Batur and serene
Lake Batur. Toyo Bungkah village is down at the lake edge. As well as the lake and the volcano, Kintamani is home to Pura Ulun
Danu Batur, one of Bali's key nine directional temples.

Agung Rai Museum of Art
Founded by Agung Rai as a museum, gallery and cultural centre, the impressive ARMA is the only place in Bali to see haunting
works by influential German artist Walter Spies, alongside many more masterpieces. The museum is housed in several
traditional buildings set in gardens with water coursing through channels. The collection is well labelled in English and features
work by 19th-century Javanese artist Raden Saleh, including his enigmatic Portrait of a Javanese Nobleman and His Wife , which
predates the similar American Gothic by decades. Exhibits also include classical Kamasan paintings, Batuan-style work from the
1930s and '40s, and works by Lempad, Affandi, Sadali, Hofker, Bonnet and Le Mayeur.
