    Community Emergency Corps & Toys for TotsBALLSTON SPA - During this upcoming holiday season Com-munity Emergency Corps of Ballston Spa will again be an of-fi cial drop off point for donations for the Toys for Tots program sponsored by the United States Marine Corps. This campaign has reached out and assisted needy and deserving children all around the capital region for over 45 years. Without this won-derful program, children in our communities would not have the opportunity to celebrate the holidays the way they deserve. With these trying times and the recession still looming over this holiday season, we are in an even bigger need of support from our Capital Region community. We have already started to re-ceive donations and will be accepting toys at our station at 78 Thompson St., Ballston Spa, NY until December 15th. You can drop them off anytime, days or evenings. If we are not at the building due to answering emergency calls, we hope you will return at another time with your contribution. As a reminder, toys collected in this area are redistributed right back into this area to those in need.For further information or if you have any questions, feel free to contact Ray Otten, Executive Director of CEC, at 885-1478.

    Discover Local Cemeteries at Brook-sides Very Grave Indeed ProgramBALLSTON SPA - Brookside, home of the Saratoga County Historical Society, invites you to learn about local historic cemeteries at Very Grave Indeed on Sunday, October 27 from 2-4 pm. This workshop will introduce participants to the many facets of historic cemeteries and the stories and resources they offer. Presenters will share information on causes of death, fu-neral and burial customs of the 19th century, gravestone clean-ing methods and materials, and using information gleaned from cemeteries to research family trees and local history. A variety of relevant materials and historic objects will be available for viewing. Participants will travel to a nearby cemetery for the latter part of the class to see a gravestone cleaning demonstra-tion and take a tour of interesting and unusual memorials. The cost of this program is $15 per person ($10 for SCHS mem-bers). Pre-registration is requested by October 24 for this popu-lar class. Please contact Anne Clothier at 885-4000 or [email protected] for more information or to register.

    Animal Protective Foundation Seeks VolunteersSCOTIA - The Animal Protective Foundation is seeking day-time volunteers within the shelter, located at 53 Maple Avenue in Scotia, and morning and evening help at its PetSmart Cat Adoption Center on Balltown Road in Niskayuna. Trail-Blazers NeededSARATOGA CO. - The public is invited to become real-life trail blazers. The Friends of the Kyaderosseras is helping the Town of Milton to create a hiking trail system at the Town of Milton Boyce Park. The trail goes along the Kayaderosseras Creek in Miltons Boyce Park, following the path of the his-toric Ballston Terminal Railroad, an electric trolley line which served the mills along the Kayaderosseras during the late nine-teenth and early twentieth centuries. The trail has been marked out in serveral places, but the most challenging part of the trail, as it decends from the old trolley bed to the side of the creek, stills needs to be established. A work party is being assembled on Saturday October 26th at 1pm., with a projected finish time of 5pm. The party will gather at the Boyce parking lot on Creekside Dr., near its intersection with Rock City Rd. The party will be digging steps, and using rocks and other available resouces to stabilize the trail. Those interested in establishing this trail, which others will follow, perhaps for generations, are invited to join the work party. Wear appropriate clothing and bring shovels. The Friends of the Kayaderosseras is a volunteer organization dedicated to the goal of improving the Creek, and helping to promote recreational opportunities to enjoy one of the finest natural features of central Saratoga County. Those interested in learning more about this organization are invited to visit their web site at www.kayaderosseras.org.

    Holiday Lighted Tractor Parade GREENWICH - The Greater Greenwich Chamber of Com-merce is excited to present the 1st Annual Holiday Lighted Tractor Parade on Thursday, November 21 at 6:30pm. The pa-rade will travel from Livery Square, west down Main Street. Tractors and themed wagons will be draped in festive holiday lighting, carolers will sing and the guest of honor, Santa Claus, will bring good cheer to all and kick off the holiday season in this great community. Entry forms are available at a variety of businesses in the area, the Chamber offi ce and at www.green-wichchamber.org. Certainly the holidays are reason enough for a parade, but we have more reasons to celebrate. Well also use this event to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the Greenwich Chapter of Future Farmers of America (FFA). All donations are welcomed and gold and silver sponsorship opportunities are available. As a thank you to our Gold and Silver spon-sors, your business name or individual name will be promoted in several ways in our promotion of the parade. Contact the Chamber for sponsorship information. Sponsorship dollars raised will help defray the cost of putting on this event and other Chamber activities. They will also provide a scholarship for a Greenwich Central School graduating senior who is pur-suing a college education in agriculture. We think this event is a real win for everyone!

    Women in Business Fall LuncheonSO. SARATOGA COUNTY - The Chamber of Southern Sara-toga Countys Women in Business Committee announces its 2013 Annual Fall Luncheon program, Dream it. Believe it. Join the Chamber of Southern Saratoga County Women in Business Committee and Trish Rost, President and Founder of Madison Handbags, as she discusses how she turned a passionate idea into a successful direct sales company that is growing nation-wide. Trish started the company in 2005 out of her basement and by 2012, sales skyrocketed and the companys growth re-quired the purchase of a 6,200 sq. ft. manufacturing facility in Schenectady. It is with the same drive and determination to beat cancer twice that helped Trish catapult Madison Handbags to be the leading direct sales company offering custom designed handbags. Enjoy a pre-reception, delicious sit-down luncheon catered by Mazzone Hospitality, lots of door prizes and high energy networking. Cost is $50 for chamber members and $65 for general admission. Pre-registration is preferred, on-line payment accepted. To register, please call (518) 371-7748 or visit www.southernsaratoga.org.

    Group Practices Hands-On Environmental Clean-UpSARATOGA CO. - A local group called Friends of the Kayad-erosseras believes in doing environmental clean-ups, rather than just talking about them. Two times each year the volunteer organization conducts clean-ups of some of the public access sites along the Kayaderosseras Creek and its tributaries. It is time for the Fall Clean-up, to improve the creekside environ-ment before winter sets in and the snow flies. Members of the public with the same can do attitude are invited to grab their work gloves and assemble at Ballston Spas Kelley Park Pavil-ion at 9am on Saturday, November 2nd. In case of significant rain, the work day will take place the following Saturday, No-vember 9th, at the same time and place. This season volunteers will be conducting clean-ups on nine sites in the watershed maps of the area/sites will be provided. Blue Neils, the groups Conservation Director, observed that the several years of effort are showing signs of progress. As the Creek environment gets cleaner, less trash is being deposited along its banks. We are winning the battle, said Neils. Transportation to each of the sites will be provided. Anyone that would like to volunteer is reminded to wear weather and task-appropriate clothing (long pants, long sleeved shirts, boots, etc.) Including a sturdy pair of work gloves (preferably leather). Lunch will be provided at Kelley Park at 12:30 pm. For more information, or if you have a question, please contact Blue R Neils at (518) 275-6928 mobile: [email protected] (preferred).

    Top-Rated Sedans For The New Model YearSedans have long been a popular option among drivers. Sedans are popular family cars and are frequently seen as safer alternatives to compacts and coupes. Each year, Consumer Reports and Motor Trend rate the best vehicles in each class, and the 2014 list includes some surprising sedans.

    For the first time in 20 years, an American car has topped the list of the best-rated sedans, ac-cording to Consumer Reports. The Chevrolet Impala has seized the top-rated spot away from the Japanese and European manufacturers who have dominated the list for two decades. The 2014 Impala scored a 95 on a scale of 100. Many car enthusiasts and trend forecasters say this rating is telling of General Motors' efforts to improve consumers' perception of the brand. In one year, the Impala went from one of the worst vehicles in the category to the best.

    The Consumer Reports ratings include road test results as well as safety information. Reliability and owner satisfaction ratings provided on older cars are based on surveys from millions of subscribers. When rating sedans, predicted reliability, owner satisfaction, accident avoidance, overall MPG, and other qualities each factor into a vehicle's overall score.

    Sedans are categorized based on size, with vehicles broken down into small, midsize and large categories. Sedans also are classified by their styles, such as upscale, luxury, sports, and even fuel-efficient. Overall, sedans remain a popular choice because they can provide a good balance of cost, comfort and efficiency. Many sedans are roomy, quiet and comfortable, making them ideal family vehicles for those who do not want the girth or potentially bumpy ride of a truck.

    In addition to the Chevy Impala, Consumer Reports list the following vehicles among their most highly-rated sedans:

    * Toyota Camry Hybrid XLE * Toyota Camry XLE (V6) * Honda Accord LX (4-cyl.)

    * Honda Accord EX-L (V6) * Hyundai Sonata Limited (2.0T) * Hyundai Sonata GLS (2.4T)

    * Chevrolet Malibu 2LTZ (2.0T) * Subaru Legacy 3.6R * Toyota Camry LE (4-cyl.)

    Longest Roads In North AmericaRoad trips are popular all year long, and driving the same roads during various seasons can yield entirely different views along the way. Many scenic highways can take travelers across the country, and for those drivers inter-ested in traveling the longest roads in North America, there are two options at the ready.

    At 4,990 miles (8,030 kilo-meters), the Trans-Canada Highway is the longest road-way in North America. It is a federal-provincial highway system that travels through all 10 provinces of Canada be-tween the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. A person can travel all the way from Newfound-land to British Columbia on the highway. The system was approved in 1949 and the highway officially opened in 1962. Drivers on the high-way will easily recognize the green-and-white maple leaf route markers.Drivers south of the Canadian border can travel along U.S. Route 20. Spanning 3,365 miles (5,415 kilometers), Route 20 is an east-west highway and the longest road in the United States. In the east, Route 20 terminates in Boston, Mass. In the west, it ends at Newport, Ore. The "0" in the route's number indicates it is a coast-to-coast route. Route 20 travels through Oregon, Idaho,

    Montana, Wyoming, Nebras-ka, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, and Massachusetts.

    Although the length of U.S. Route 6 was shortened when California renumbered its highways in 1964 and a por-tion of the route was trans-ferred to another highway, the road is the longest continuous roadway in the United States. It is not considered a major transcontinental route be-cause Route 6 was gradually put together from other routes over time. But it still can get drivers from Massachusetts to California.

    Drivers south of the Canadian border can travel along U.S.

    Diagnosing A Leaky CarVery often drivers find that the seats or the mats below their feet are damp or downright sopping wet. But unless a window or sunroof was left open during a rainstorm, drivers may find it dif-ficult to decipher why their vehicles are suddenly soaked.

    Unfortunately, when a vehicle's interior is wet, that could be a sign of a significant problem, one that can gradually worsen over time. Wetness can cause electrical components or metal structures in the car to rot, and a soggy interior may eventually be overcome by mold. It is best to find out what is causing the leak as soon as possible and have the problem fixed just as quickly.

    Finding the source of a leak is not always easy. Sometimes drivers can locate it them-selves and then fix the prob-lem on their own, while more serious problems might need to be handled by a profes-sional. But it is best to assess the situation before booking an appointment with your mechanic.

    Cars can spring a leak for a variety of reasons. Leaks from systems under the hood, as well as rainwater or water from washing the car, can infiltrate the interior if seals around doors and/or windows are broken or gaskets are worn out. Figuring out which type of liquid is entering your vehicle can help you deter-mine what's behind the leak.

    A clear, slippery liquid under the seats may be indicative of a leak in the brake fluid res-ervoir. Brake fluid is a liquid used in the braking system to apply hydraulic pressure from the master cylinder to the cal-ipers to the pads against the

    wheel drums. If you discover brake fluid, check the master cylinder or the clutch master cylinder to see if there is a leak or spillover of the fluid.

    Coolant also can leak under the dashboard and into the foot wells of a car. Coolant is a sticky, green and sweet-smelling fluid, and a coolant leak could mean that a heater core or hose in the cooling system is leaking. In such instances, hoses may need to be replaced.

    Some vehicles have water diverters on the sides of their windshields to make sure water flows off of the windshield when the wipers are in use. Also, the trough where the wipers rest should have a sealant that prevents water from entering at the base of the windshield. Over time, both can wear out and may need to be replaced and resealed. Try sitting in the car on a dry day and spraying a hose on the windshield. See if any water eventually makes it inside of the car. If it does, the windshield is likely the reason your vehicle's interior is getting wet.

    A clogged drain in a vehicle's heating, ventilation and air conditioning system is one of the more common causes of interior water damage. If the drain is clogged, condensation from the system cannot drain from the tube. In such instances, water backs up into the system and can actually blow out of the car vents or elsewhere in the vehicle, forming a pool on the floor of the car. Leaves or debris can cause a blockage. If excess water is left in the HVAC system, it can damage the blower motor. Also, a faulty seal that is located between the HVAC case and the firewall of the vehicle may cause water to leak into the passenger compartment under the carpet.

    In some cases, cleaning blocked drains in a vehicle's HVAC system may be as simple as blowing compressed air through the vents or using a wire to clear out leaves or dirt. Other times it may be hard to access the leaks, and such instances are often best left to a mechanic.

    The causes of leaks in a car are not always so easy to diagnose. But it is important to figure out where the water is coming from early on to minimize the damage water can do to your vehicle.
