BOOS and In-situ TAC CMEMS

Baltic Operational Oceanographic System -BOOS• BOOS is part of the EuroGOOS network of observing platforms

One of the Regional Operartional Oceanographic Systems (ROOS’s)

• BOOS has the vision to provide integrated marine services to the marine users and policy makers.

CMEMS In-situ TAC• Thematic Assembly Center for marine In-situ observations within

the Copernicus Marine Service

• CMEMS In-Situ TAC integrates thousands of observing systems to provide a global picture of the 3D ocean state and ocean variability at different spatial and temporal scales

In-situ observations are on-site local measurements of sea water properties.

What is In-situ observation and why?

Page 9: Baltic Operational Oceanographic System and · catalogue • Nearly 36000 platforms/7000 platforms per month /3250 per day ( +40% since V1) • 305 providers ... (+ 28% since Jan

• In-situ observations are obtained using ad-hoc on-site sensors onboard of a wide range of platforms.

• Sensors attached on eg. buoys and ships are used to captureocean variability at different scales.

• In-situ observations are madelocally.

• CMEMS In-Situ TAC gathers them viathe ROOS’s into ONE data base.

• Many organizations acquire in-situ data in differentlocations at sea.

• BOOS and CMEMS’s job is not to acquire in-situ data andnot to operate or maintain any observing systems. It israther to identify (BOOS), gather and integrate them intoONE DATA BASE.

• « Gathering data » from outsider organisations requiresstrong mutual agreements.

• « Integrating data » into ONE data base requires strongformat standard definition and quality controlprocedures.
