Hello Baltimore Washington Chapter Members, Old Man Winter seems to be taking his time getting here, and that is fine with me. Lets hope he goes easy on us this year. Bill Larkins and Leila Smith have finished the restoration of the ‘51 Chevy panel we fea-tured as the Truck of the Month in the December DRIVELINE. They began working on the project a year ago, and have just recently finished the painting. They intend to show both of their trucks frequently this year and for years to come. You may recall that this truck still has the original engine (with 100,000 miles) and original components, and is almost like the day it came off the assembly line. Congratulations to Bill and Leila on a very nice restoration.

CHAPTER MEETING

October 28, 2012 Called to order at 1:30 P.M. Welcome remarks by President Bill Marlow. The meeting was held at the newly renovated Country Pride Restaurant in Jessup, MD. Twenty members were in at-tendance. Minutes as posted in the newsletter were approved, motion Mel Thomas, second Mike Boteler. Membership Report. Three members will be dropped for non-payment of dues. One will be retained pending con-tact with the member. After these changes the chapter will have ninety-one members. National Activities: John Vannatta reported that the hotel costs at Yakima should be reasonable, at about $90.00 per night. The Red Lion Holiday Inn Express seems to be a good location. Yakima is a nice location for a west coast truck show, but truck registrations are likely to be in the 600 truck range. Yakima is on the eastern slope of the Cascade Mountains a couple hours drive from Seattle’s Airport. Kenworth built 6x6 army trucks were there during WWII. This year the show will be open longer hours and perhaps more days. The Consolidated Freightways sign is about ready to be placed in front of the HQ building. There will be a “sell-a-brick” campaign coming out in the next Wheels of Time. The bricks will be sold to help pay for the installation, the restoration and the added landscape. There will be various sized bricks priced according to the size of the brick. There will be a national dues raise of $3.00 per year announced in Wheels of Time. The society cannot continue to run a slight deficit on events. The West Springfield show lost money this year. As we all know, ATHS has a new website. There will be space on the site for Chapter Websites. We will need some assistance in migrating our site from the Stovebolt site to the new ATHS site. The Wheels of Time and Showtime will both be available on the web as will the White Archives. The Route 66 Tour: The tour is complete. BWI was ably represented by John Vannatta and Mike Boteler riding in John’s Ford WT-9000 truck tractor. The tour was very well received by chapters and members along the way. The tour was a basic series of shows at truck stops along Route 66 showing the flag and encouraging membership. Tom Ridley of Sirius Radio was with the trip for five days and had an interview with Bill and John on his show. Everyone who met the cruise was a potential member as they were already involved in trucking and trucks. Tri-State Show. We have been invited and have accepted co-sponsorship of this popular show. There will be a meeting at the fairgrounds on November 18 at 2PM to do the planning for the next show. Billy and Jesse plan to at-tend. If anyone is interested in attending and getting involved in the preparations for next years show, please come to the meeting. As everyone knows the show is a huge success year after year. This is our time to get involved and lend a hand to the members of the Susquehanna Valley, Shenandoah Valley and Mason Dixon Chapters that have worked so hard to make this event what it is. Let Billy know if you have questions or if you plan on being there. BW Truck Show Venues: Five possibilities were discussed.

Blobs Park – involves rental of the grounds. IH tractor show – moves around Maryland a fall show we can attend. Howard County Farm Heritage Weekend – Car Show and Farm activities as well as consignment auction at the Howard County Farm Heritage Museum – last weekend in September. St. Mary’s antique Tractor Club Parade - A possibility, Andy will discuss it with the Tractor Club at their next meeting. We could supplement the event and meet after the event at John’s garage. Show at Farm Park in Fairfax County. Distance across DC is involved, so less interest.

Treasurer’s Report No report given since the Treasurer was unable to attend.

ATHS Mud-Flap Inventory: Andy McWilliams reported that we have not sold a lot of flaps in the past year and the flap inventory will need some replenishment. We will order 25 sets of 24 inch flaps, 20 sets of 30 inch flaps and five sets of 36 inch flaps to get to our minimum order of 50 sets of flaps. The price per flap is up $0.50 per flap from our previous order five years ago. Andy may spend the appropriate sum for the flaps. Motion Andy McWilliams, second John Vannatta, motion approved. Plaque for our Legislators: We presented two plaques to our legislators, Sen. Nancy Jacobs, and Rep. John Woods, who were helpful in the passage of the Antique Truck changes in the Maryland Motor Vehicle Code at the 2012 Legisla-tive session. The other Maryland Chapters prepared and presented plaques to Lou Campion and Kelly Schultz. Motion approved to reimburse Dale Croston for the $117.00 spent on the plaques. John Vannatta, second Mike Boteler. Photos from 1988 National ATHS Truck Show, at Hunt Valley, MD: This show was sponsored by the BW Chapter. Dana and Mike Boteler have had the photos scanned to a CD and the participants names are now in a list formatted in excel. The plan is to offer a CD and a DVD to members nationwide with a small notice in Wheels of Time and perhaps on the page with the Mud Flaps. Estimated price to be $15.00 for the set. Motion approved to reimburse the Botelers for the expenses to date. Motion John Vannatta, second Mel Thomas. Our condolences and prayers are with Billy on the loss of his sister, and to Frances Badman on the loss of her mother. Motion John Vannatta, second Andy McWilliams to reimburse John and Peggy Milliman for the costs incurred. New Officers for coming season: Nomination Committee has found four candidates for the four offices. President: Jesse W. Walter, Jr. Vice President: Dale Pilkerton, Jr. Treasurer: Kathy Reeder Secretary: Gary Mattingly Motion Mel Thomas, second John Vannatta to accept the slate. Motion passed. Future Events. Atlantic City Car show : This show happens sometime in early March. There is a car show and an auction. Buses leave from a lot of locations. There is one bus sponsored by the Millsboro (DE) Cruisers leaving the Georgetown (DE) Wal-Mart parking lot. Tour of Jerry Brewis Automotive Collectibles & Cars Five Warehouses. Your Executive Committee traveled to headquarters during the first week of December to conduct an audit of actions and procedures at the staff level. Of primary concern was the loss at this year’s convention and the allocation of staff responsibilities. As a result, several changes have been made and recommendations to procedures outlined for im-plementation. In the general interest category, the C-F sign is installed on the piers at HQ. Work still remains to complete the installation of the neon tubing, protective panels around the outside and final internal wiring. The sign company will complete this work during the next few weeks. They will power it up to check the operation when finished. The sign project is costing more than originally projected so further work will be suspended until next year while we identify funding to continue. Bids for the landscaping were higher than expected so the brick project was commissioned. If suc-cessful, this should generate the revenue necessary to complete the project. The Chapter web pages associated with the society website are available for use. A chapter contact must be des-ignated to coordinate with our IT contractors to populate it and learn the requirements. A mail out should be forthcom-ing describing the process. A new tab on the main website may be available in the near future where you would begin to see the start of the digital library. Our contractors are preparing an estimate to create this exciting new area. The initial data would be images associated with the White Motor Company and it’s subsidiaries and possibly the Peterbilt build re-cords. Items would be added as available. Expect to receive a Marketing Survey designed to provide information as to our truck related operations. This data will be used as we apply for grants and attempt to find out who our members are in trucking. Expect an entirely new WOT cover for the Jan-Feb issue. Stormy is trying to keep up with the times and an up-dated look without losing our image. I hope everyone has a great Holiday Season. John VannattaJohn VannattaJohn VannattaJohn Vannatta

News from National Headquarters

The Consolidated Freightways neon sign has been mounted on the steel columns outside of ATHS National Headquarters, it is awaiting final installation of neon tube lights and wiring. Landscaping will include a “Buy a Brick” hard surface plus plantings around the base of the sign. See your WOT magazine on how to purchase bricks or contribute to the sign fund.
