Atlantic’s Mark KennedyIn February 2006 Mark Kennedy became a member of the Atlantic Region team with Black & McDonald. Mark was a young estimator hired for the Utility Department. “Managing a project is kind of like playing golf; even with the best of planning and ability you will fi nd yourself hitting the ball out of the rough a few times. You have to take it in your stride, stay positive and see it through to the end.”

Joseph Zachariah, a project manager with Southern Ontario Electrical and Utility Regions, joined Black & McDonald in 1996. He has been an integral part of some of the region’s most complex projects, including the Sheppard Avenue subway construction, the Lester B. Pearson International Airport rebuild and the construction of Brampton, Ontario’s Goreway Power Station. Joseph is currently involved in the Toronto Transit Commission’s Wilson Carhouse Upgrade and two hospital projects, the expansion of Toronto’s Mt. Sinai Hospital and the new Women’s College Hospital. “Joseph started with us when he fi rst came to Canada, as a coordinator and doing some estimating. He worked his

way up and has become one of our best project managers. He is a diligent planner who cares about the company and he works hard for the company” says Tony Decuzzi. “His people have a lot of respect for his ability to perform and manage the work. And our clients always speak very highly of him.” A few years back, Joseph earned his Professional Engineer designation, supplementing an engineering degree earned in India. Joseph and his wife Neena have two sons, Tarun Joseph (with B&M in the TTC Line Division) and Alex Joseph, a mechanical engineering student at Carleton University.

Bill Hunt joined Black & McDonald’s Northern Ontario Region over 15 years ago. His knowledge, confi dence and dedication to the job are outstanding, which is why Bill has become an invaluable electrician and a key member of the NOR team. Project managers love to have Bill on their jobs as they know the job will get done right, because it’s the right thing to do. Bill is a hard worker who never cuts corners and has a solution to every problem. Bill is a real leader on site and customers are at ease with his comprehension of the tasks at hand. Customers regularly praise Bill for his hard work and ability to continuously generate exceptional results. He has become the ‘go-to guy’ for control work, SCADA operations and water treatment plants. In 2008 Bill worked diligently on the Pretoria Bridge, a monumental lift bridge in Ottawa, Ontario which crosses the Rideau Canal. There was a wide scope of electrical items such as architectural LED lighting, marine traffi c navigation, traffi c gates and lighting, etc., and very challenging modifi cations to the existing bridge control system. This was a project that required the right man on the job. Bill put in long hours, even working through major snow storms on the Rideau Canal in order to have the job complete. He assisted the architectural and electrical engineers with solving many design issues, earning the respect of everyone on the job. Bill is a father of two and an avid outdoorsman who enjoys fi shing and snowmobiling.

Bill Heath: “I Get to Work With Everybody”

Black & McDonald’s Sheet Metal and Custom Fabrication Division supports Black & McDonald with the ability to build just about anything in sheet metal. Although fabrication methods and technologies are always changing, since 1971, one thing in the shop which has remained constant is the presence of Bill Heath. “Bill is just one of those staple guys – he runs the sheet metal shop, and has also assumed responsibilities like tool room and building maintenance at Pullman Court, the upkeep of the Black and McDonald classic tradesman’s vehicle, coaching and mentoring the guys on the shop fl oor and the up-and-coming foremen” says Jason Chobotiuk, Division Manager, SOR-Mechanical. “The thing about Black & McDonald is I get to work with everybody, I have a lot of freedom, and a lot of expertise around to fall back on. Black & McDonald has expertise in all kinds of fi elds” Bill says. Bill started as an apprentice sheet metal worker with Leslie Bros. on King Street East in Toronto in November of 1971, and is now in his 40th year with the company. “I was a benchman; when we got into plasma cutting, it took over part of the job, but there is still a lot that is done by hand” Bill says. “You still need the workers backing that technology up.”

It’s hard to fi nd a B&M employee with the depth of experience and geography as Joan Pike. Her work as a contract administrator has taken her across the country, and mirrors the expertise of the company. Her career at B&M began in 1986 when General Motors commissioned an automated rail system at their truck plant in Oshawa, Ontario. The three-year project was followed by a stint in Pullman Court’s accounting department. After a short hiatus from the company, Joan returned to B&M as an administrator on the Dow Chemical project in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, working once again with Steve Corkum. Through the 1990’s, Joan applied her accounting and labour control skills to projects taken on by Southern Ontario’s Utility and Mechanical Regions. From 2001 until 2006 she was deeply involved in establishing the Power Generation Division’s Pickering offi ce, and currently works on our Atomic Energy of Canada project, the Bruce Power Station rebuild, a post she has held for the past fi ve years. There have been many relocations through the years. “It’s not for everybody, but it’s ideal for me; I like starting a new job, and I like fi nishing them too” Joan says. “I love dealing with construction workers, with collective agreement issues, and working with different issues and personalities every day. B&M has

had the same policies since the company began. I have found the people I work for are always trying to help out and I love to support them.” Not only has Joan been committed to the ongoing and long-term success of B&M, she has been actively involved in the recruitment, training, coaching and mentorship of many up-and-coming employees as well as some of our more seasoned employees. Beyond her day job, Joan has aggressively led many recreational and social committees/events and most importantly she has been a champion of fundraising for local charities and for those in need in the community. Fondly referred to as ‘Joanie’ by many tradespeople and colleagues, Joan has a way of welcoming you with a hearty chuckle and a beaming smile. For many, this fi rst encounter on behalf of the company is a warm welcome.

Ken Dudgeon: “I’m a Door Knocker”Ken Dudgeon joined Black & McDonald in 2001, after operating his own contracting company involved in commercial renovations and a sales career in the industrial chemicals business. Ken is one of three salespeople in the Calgary offi ce; his manager, Dave Morrow, describes Ken as “a steady, consistent performer who excels at selling both small and larger service projects, and who has facilitated many ‘out of the box’ sales agreements.” “I do some sales calls on the phone and through email, but basically I’m a door knocker” Ken says. “I like to get in front of people. I fi nd if you can present yourself, you get a lot further.” He works closely with Dave Morrow and Calgary Service Manager Bob

Wall. “Bob’s technical background can carry you a long way. When it comes to the true technical stuff that I can’t answer, the fact that Bob’s there really makes a difference. If I need questions answered, expertise is a phone call away.” Away from B&M, Ken is a diehard golfer and the father of fi ve grown children.

Calgary’s Ken Dudgeon: “I like working for B&M because the company treats you fairly, and I get support from everybody in the offi ce.”

Kansas City’s Mike Bishop: It’s About Customer Service

Mike joined Black & McDonald in Kansas City in 2000 as Superintendent, and quickly became a proven asset. Mike brought a vast knowledge of project implementation and a natural rapport with clients, around which our U.S. operation was able to build upon in the beginning stages of our growth. Mike continues to manage multiple projects simultaneously and treats both clients and employees fairly and with respect. We would like to recognize Mike for his professionalism and commitment to customer service, which exemplifi es the Black & McDonald code of business.Mike Bishop

Service Awards 2009-2010

The individuals listed below achieved signifi cant service milestones in 2010. Congratulations and thanks to all.

Continued from page 1Lorraine is a tireless worker who takes up the slack of those who occasionally cannot cope without it affecting her output. Her work ethic is the main reason why the JDE transition was successful. In addition to her duties, Lorraine is trained as a fi rst aid attendant combined with defi brillator training and she is the Building Evacuation Coordinator for our offi ces. She also helms our charity committee, ensuring our donations are sent to the most deserving causes. In her spare time she likes to blow off steam by boxing. She is becoming a professional kick boxer. She also volunteers as a host for YMCA Connections Program to help new immigrants adjust to life in Canada. Lorraine is liked, appreciated and good friends with absolutely everyone in the offi ce. “I often hear our employees say ‘Lorraine makes everybody here look good day in, day out’” says Charles Saramo.

Vancouver’s Lorraine Magcal

Continued from page 1 Mark has often taken on the role as a presenter of Safety topics at the Quarterly Safety Meetings. His enthusiasm livens up any topic he steps up to present. With his comfort in front of a crowd it was noticed that Mark waited a long time to ‘ring the bell’ to celebrate his estimating success. He said he wouldn’t ring the bell until he got a million-dollar job, and last year he made it. Mark’s role has expanded to include project coordination, planning, and as of March 2011 he has taken on the role of project manager for a high-profi le, province-wide LED highway lighting retrofi t project. Mark has two young daughters, Riley and Emiley. He is also active in a local ball hockey league and can only be described as a more than avid Boston Bruins fan.
