New Delhi: As many as 85 lakh salaried taxpayers whose taxable income, including salary and interest income, is up to Rs 5 lakh, will not be re- quired to file income-tax return from now. “No income tax returns is re- quired for salaried persons whose annual annual taxable incomeincluding salary and interest is up to Rs 5 lakh. We would shortly notify this,” a Central Board of Direct Taxes official said. However, he said this would not cover income from other sources like house property , capital gains and gains from profession and business. The scheme would be ap- plicable from assessment year 2011-12 onwards. This means that salaried persons eligible under the scheme would not have to file returns for the fi- nancial year 2010-11 in 2011-12 (assessment year). Under the scheme, those salaried persons who want to claim tax refund, would have to income tax file return. As per the memorandum to the finance bill 2011, the gov- ernment will be issuing a no- tification exempting ‘classes of persons’ from the requirement of furnishing income tax re- turns. Under the scheme, the salaried person wants exemp- tion from filing IT return, has to disclose about the incomes like dividend and interest to his employer for tax deduction. In the scenario, the Form 16 is- sued to salaried employees will be treated as income tax return. At present, it is obliga- tory for all salaried persons to file income tax return under the Income Tax Act, 1961. The idea behind the move is that in cases where there are no other sources of income, filing of a return is a duplica- tion of existing information. Get Speaker to quit, Cong MLAs will attend assembly from next moment: Oppn leader

D L HarishBangalore Beat Bureau

Bangalore: The Yeddyurappagovernment went to great lengthsto get the principal oppositionparty, the Congress, to attendthe ongoing assembly session, but without much success. Afterthe Congress decided not to takepart in the assembly proceedingslast Friday, the Yeddyurappagovernment wanted a modicumof democratic system workingand did not want to face emptyopposition benches.

But before he could work ona strategy, chief minister B SYeddyurappa had to attend theBJP national executive committeemeeting in Lucknow. He left thecity on Saturday along with BJPstate president K S Eshwarappaand law and parliamentary af-fairs minister Suresh Kumar. Af-ter reaching the Uttar Pradeshcapital, the chief minister realisedthat the Congress should attendthe session from Monday, andsent back Suresh Kumar on thesame day to talk to oppositionleader in the assembly Siddara-

maiah. On Sunday, Suresh Kumar

called Siddaramaiah a numberof times, but could not get be-yond the latter’s personal sec-retary.

But he did manage to getthrough to Siddaramaiah laterand requested him for a meeting. The Congress leader said he wasin Mysore and was preoccupiedwith some engagements.

Suresh Kumar said he wouldtravel to Mysore immediatelyand convince him to attend the

assembly session, sources in thegovernment said.

A curt Siddaramaiah replied,“First your government shouldask the Speaker to resign andthe Congress MLAs will imme-diately attend the assembly ses-sion. The Supreme Court haspassed severe strictures againstthe Speaker and the chief min-ister in a case related to the dis-qualification of MLAs. The Speak-er should have taken the moralresponsibility and quit the post.”

“You get the Speaker (K G

Bopaiah) to quit immediately, and the Congress MLAs wouldbe part of the session from Mon-day morning,” he said.

When Suresh Kumar offeredto meet Siddaramaiah on Sundayitself, the latter said he was head-ing for a function and would notbe free the entire day. When theminister sought an appointmentfor Monday morning, Siddara-maiah said he had a function toattend in Kodagu district andwould not be available.

The Speaker had planned toconvene a Business AdvisoryCommittee meeting yesterday at11 am, but did not as none ofopposition parties’ floor leaderswere present.

The Congress on Friday de-cided to boycott the session, say-ing it did not want K G Bopaiahin the Speaker’s chair, as he hasto resign.

Refuting LeT operative DavidHeadley’s claims that Ranawas very close to him and hadhelped him plot the Mumbaiterror attacks of 2008, Samrazsaid, Headley was just an“Urdu speaking Americanfriend” to her family who hadclaimed to have reformed fol-lowing drug addiction issuesand arrests.

“India is my second homeand my mother is from India.

All my relations are fromIndia and they live in Meerut,Ghaziabad and Delhi,” Samrazsaid, asking why would thenher husband plot an attack on

In an interview to PTI, shesaid Headley had been in-volved in a lot of drug arrests, and had had issues with theFBI and also with his wives.

Action against Baba Ramdev internal Indian matter: US

Washington: The United States has saidthat it supports the right to peaceful assem-bly, but it considers New Delhi’s actionagainst yoga guru Baba Ramdev as “an in-ternal Indian issue at this point.”

“We’ve seen the various media reportsabout the incident. We consider it an internalIndian issue at this point,” State Departmentspokesman Mark Toner told reporters whenasked to comment about Ramdev’s forcibleremoval from an anti-graft mass agitation.

“Speaking more broadly, though, we dosupport the right to peaceful assembly, butwe also support a democratic government’sright to require permits and enforce publicsecurity,” he said. “But again, we believe

it’s an internal matter for the Indian Gov-ernment.”

Asked why the US had not asked Indianauthorities to protect peaceful protestors,Toner said: “It’s a fair question, absolutely, because we have said elsewhere that wesupport the universal aspirations of peopleto demonstrate and to express their viewsin a peaceful manner.”

“Look, my understanding of this case isthat it’s very complex,” Toner said in re-sponse to persistent questioning about al-leged police brutality.

“We obviously support their right topeaceful assembly. We respect India’s statureas the world’s largest democracy, and we

believe it’s, right now, an internal matterfor them to decide the best way forward,”he said.

“It’s important to recognize that India isthe world’s largest democracy, has a re-sponsibility to allow these peaceful protestorsto express their views, but equally, there isa responsibility on the part of the protestorsto do so in a responsible fashion and withthe requisite security requirements,” Tonersaid.

The spokesman also refused to draw aparallel between the Delhi incident andTiananmen Square episode in China saying,“Again, I’m not going to draw parallels be-tween the two cases, no.” IANS

The Bangalore Iskcon centre hasseen a lot of ugly developmentsover the last few days. Bangalorecentre president Madhu PanditDasa claims it is the making of a

jealous mind, which is out to tarnish the im-age of Bangalore Iskcon centre. He talks toBangalore Beat at length and clarifies on anumber of issues and rumours that havebeen swirling around the religious centre.Recently, representatives of Iskcon Mum-bai centre tried to get into the Bangalorecentre, claiming that it comes under theirjurisdiction. But they were prevented fromentering the premises.Iskcon Bangalore was being looked up forits welfare work and was seen in goodfaith… But what is this mess all aboutnow?Madhu Pandit Dasa: Iskcon Bangaloreeven today is being up looked up to in goodfaith, except by some who are jealous.

It has been an independent society andan international organisation since itsfounding in 1978. It has delivered a greatservice to society in the city and state, some-thing no one can deny, by spreading themessage of Krishna and doing other socialservice.

Greedy elements at Iskcon Mumbai andits president Dayaram Dasa have con-trived a plan to oust me and take overIskcon Bangalore, citing some irregularities. These claims are baseless. Let them proveit in the court of law. We will not let thembarge in illegally. What has Dayaram Dasa got anything todo with Iskcon Bangalore?

We always projected Iskcon Bangaloreto be a model for the rest of the world. Andits purpose is creating awareness andhighlighting oneness among humanity.

But whenever any immoral activity hascrept up, disturbing the very fundamentalworking of Iskcon, be it involving a mem-ber, missionary or some guru or any of theIskcon centres, be it in the US or in Ban-galore, we have raised questions.

This was not tolerated by people like Da-yaram Dasa, who is the present presidentof Iskcon Kolkata and a member of the su-pervisory committee in Mumbai.

I raised issues at not one but various gen-eral body meetings, where presidents andother important functionaries of Iskcon as-semble. We know about the luxurious lifeled by Dayaram Das and how he was in-volved in real estate business in Kolkataand Mumbai, and how he tried to oust thehonest president and guru AdridharanDasa, who was known for his high moral-ity, from the Kolkata centre in 2001, sole-ly because the latter tried to cleanse IskconMumbai centre then.

Dayaram Dasa, along with his support-ers, hatched a plan to get AdridharanDasa out of the way. It is the same old casewith the Bangalore centre too. But the Mumbai centre alleges financialirregularities over the years and claimsthe city centre belongs to it. It also saysthe Bangalore centre is underperformingand it is time for a takeover…

When Srila Prabhupada founded Iskcon,he did not want to create a single, mono-lithic organisation, but wanted each cen-tre, be it in the US or India, to be separateentities and registered as societies in theplace where they operated from. There isa letter written in 1972 by Srila Prabhupa-da Dasa to Karandhara Dasa, who was inMumbai, which clearly talks about such anarrangement.

Yes, in the beginning all activities wereconducted from Mumbai, but that wasonly till 1970, 1971. Afterwards, PrabhupadaDasa felt that each organisation should manitself and not depend on one Iskcon to car-ry out the activities. This was also to see thatall members of Iskcon worked tirelessly. And about irregularities… What irregu-larities have been found at Iskcon? Hasanyone come forward with substantialbasis or evidence for it?

Be it the functioning of hundi at Iskconor counting of the money dropped at hun-di, everything is properly accounted for.People in the finance department audit thecash flow and there are clear records keptsince 1978.

The misappropriation cases they al-leged might be against the Iskcon HousingSociety in Bangalore. But that is a separatetrust and Iskcon Bangalore has nothing todo with it. We don’t have any hold over itand I am shocked in fact.

In Akshaya Patra (mid-day meal schemefor school-going children) too there has notbeen a single case of fraud. A 10-membercommittee of MLAs, constituted by the Yed-dyurappa government, has given a cleanchit.

But if a highest legal authority con-ducts a thorough inquiry, irregularities atMumbai Iskcon will come to light very eas-ily. I am sure that the truth will come outone day. We are certain that DayaramDasa’s involvement in multi-crore civilconstruction business will be exposed… weare waiting just for that.

What Iskcon Bangalore is today is be-cause of the work and devotion of variousdisciples, missionaries and other personswho are dedicated to Iskcon.

You might well know that people con-nected with the Mumbai Iskcon tried tobarge inside the temple. We had request-ed the police commissioner to give us pro-tection and security. It was not possible forthem to enter unless they had a decree, andproper court document. For the past few months, there have

been reports that Iskcon Bangalore isveering towards real estate business andthe money collected through donationshave been used to build an apartment?

We are not here to do any real estate busi-ness. We are not realtors. But whatevergrand projects we have conceived andworking on is to do with the promotion ofour real culture and heritage, and Krishna

Leela Park is one such. The one who is doing real estate business

is not us, but some other trust. What I cameto know from news reports is that they havedeveloped and sold 600 apartments andhave generated a surplus of Rs 75 crore fromthis business over three years. Please, wehave nothing to do with it.What about Krishna Leela Park… Can you

brief us about it? Is there a business ele-ment to it?

We did have an idea of coming up withthe Krishna Leela Park. We don’t deny it.When we took up the plan, the governmentshowed interest and it too wanted to havesuch a park which could be a tourist at-traction.

The Krishna Leela Park project will cost

around Rs 350 crore. We initially wanted tobuild it on Kanakapura road in 35 acres, which is owned by the India HeritageFoundation and Iskcon Charities. This is ourland.

It is known that there was a piece of landadjoining the plot which was at that timea hillock and not suitable for any activity. It had rock pits. To make use of it, to see thatwe are not disturbed when we go aheadwith the project and also to prevent othersfrom occupying it, we had asked the gov-ernment to allot the land. We got 28 acres, and this is where the Krishna Leela Park willcome up. As of now we have plans of cre-ating a grand park on the lines of DisneyWorld in the US and Universal Studios.

We asked the government to give us thisland just as any industrialist or promoterwho comes with a tourism project and asper the rules under the Karnataka tourismpolicy. The government gave the land un-der 50 percent guidance value, that’s it.

Coming to the business element… As asociety, why can’t we go for business for fur-thering our sacred mission, when other mis-sionaries like various Christian organisa-tions and similar other charities do it?

When Srila Prabhupada started Iskconway back in the 1970s, he had instructed thedisciples to start an incense stick businessin US just to sustain ourselves as an or-ganisation. Spiritual Sky became the largestdistributor of incense sticks and it came outof Iskcon Los Angeles. It is through thatmoney several temples were built in the US.

We honestly pay tax on every count, beit the sale of prasadam or religious para-phernalia. We even pay luxury tax for theearnings from the guesthouse and themarriage hall. How is Iskcon Bangalore functioning? Itis said that it is making a lot of profit bycharging devotees heavily for servicesand by running it as a profitable organ-isation…

In the present context of high prices, togive even basic services and to afford anycommodities we need to shell out heavilyfrom our pockets. Just to mention a few, wa-ter bill per month comes to around Rs 5 lakhand electricity bill to around Rs 8 lakh. Wehave 325 fulltime employees who alsoneed to be paid.

The revenue is less than the expenditure. While the annual revenue is Rs 10.19 crore, the expenditure is Rs 18.55 crore.

To make up for the other Rs 8 crore,Iskcon missionaries and those serving thecentre go out and collect donations. Thatis how we can make it, otherwise definite-ly we can’t.

Eating dirtcan be

good forthe gut

Washington: For many people all over the world, dining on dirt is nothing out of the ordinary. Nowan extensive analysis helps explain why.The most probable explanation for humangeophagy, the eating of earth, is that it protects thestomach against toxins, parasites, and pathogens, the study suggests.

The first written account of human geophagycame from Hippocrates more than 2,000 years ago, says Cornell University researcher Sera Young, wholed the study, reports the journal The Quarterly Re-view of Biology.

Since then, the eating of earth has been reportedon every inhabited continent and in almost everycountry. Several hypotheses had been consideredplausible. Some researchers think geophagy is sim-ply a consequence of food shortage, according toa Cornell statement.

Accordingly, Young and her colleagues analysedreports from missionaries, plantation doctors, ex-plorers, and anthropologists to put together a data-base of more than 480 cultural accounts ofgeophagy.

Overall, the protection hypothesis fits the databest, Cornell researchers found.

The database shows that geophagy is docu-mented most commonly in women in the earlystages of pregnancy and in pre-adolescent chil-dren.

Both categories of people are especially sensi-tive to parasites and pathogens, according toYoung and her colleagues.

In addition, geophagy is most common intropical climates where foodborne microbes areabundant. Finally, the database shows that peo-ple often eat earth during episodes of gastroin-testinal stress. IANS

Egyptian mummies holdclues of ancient

air pollutionWashington: Scientists have found evidence ofparticulates in the lungs of ancient mummies, sug-gesting that Egyptians may have been exposed toair pollution hundreds of years ago.

Particulates, tiny microscopic particles thatirritate the lungs, have been linked to a wide ar-ray of modern-day illnesses, including heart dis-ease, lung ailments and cancer.

A team led by Roger Montgomerie of the Uni-versity of Manchester which has so far examined15 mummified lungs found particulates in all ofthem and the particulate levels are not much be-low what is expected in modern-day lungs.

“I would say it would be less than modern day,but not much less,” Montgomerie was quoted assaying by LiveScience.

“This is quite bizarre if you think about it, con-sidering we have the mass burning of fossil fuelsand an awful lot of pollution that has been goingon since the industrial revolution.”

In the world of Egyptology, where well-preservedlung tissue is rare, and permission to examine itis rarer still, 15 is a significant sample, Montgomeriesaid.

These mummies come from a broad cross sec-tion of Egyptian life. Some were ordinary workerswho lived in a remote outpost called the DakhlehOasis, while others were of the upper class -- no-bles and priests or priestesses.

“Everyone seems to have a degree of it,” Mont-gomerie said of the particulates, “it doesn’t seemto be confined to one social group.”

The finding, presented at the Current Researchin Egyptology conference at Durham University inthe UK, suggests the ancient Egyptians may havesuffered from a wide range of negative health ef-fects. PTI

Family, job pressures blamed for fightsWashington: When the demands ofwork and family conflict, is the jobblamed, is the family role blamed, oris blame placed on both? And whatare the consequences?

A new study by Elizabeth M. Popos-ki, assistant professor of psychologyat Indiana and Purdue universities,is the first to explore day-to-day ex-periences in attributing this blame.

The work examines individual in-cidents of work-family conflict andtracks how blame for this conflict isattributed.

Only three percent of those surveyedblamed both work and family for con-flict between the two.

Sixty-four percent of those surveyedblamed work, not family, for conflict.Twenty-two percent blamed only theirfamily role, the journal Group & Or-ganization Management reports.

Five percent blamed external factorsother than work or family for the con-flict, and only six percent blamedthemselves for the conflict. There were

no gender differences in how blamewas assigned, according to an Indianastatement.

Anger and frustration on the job

are related to many negative workplaceoutcomes such as employee theft.Preventing such emotions may benefitboth employees and employers, saidPoposki.

Focusing on reactions to the work-family conflict, Poposki found thatthe order in which events were sched-uled, was an important factor in at-tributing blame, as the second event, whether work or family related, wasmore likely to be blamed than thefirst.

“This study is valuable because fo-cusing on details helps us better un-derstand the mechanisms and process-es of conflict. This understanding maybe important to future studies of thenegative emotional reactions to work-family conflict including anger, frus-tration, shame and guilt,” Poposkisaid. IANS

Hereʼs why saliva glands stop working

Washington: Researchers areone step closer to unravellingwhy salivary glands stop workingbecause of disease or damagefrom treatment of diseases.

Salivary glands are essentialfor lubrication, defence and be-ginning digestion in the mouth. The largest of the salivary glands, the parotid, secretes importantproteins into the saliva.

Douglas Darling, professor inoral health and rehabilitation atthe University of LouisvilleSchool of Dentistry, and his teamhave identified a protein sortingmechanism used by the salivarygland. The discovery could openthe way to advanced therapiesfor patients with damaged ordysfunctional salivary glandsbecause of radiation therapy, prescription drugs or Sjogren’sSyndrome, defined by two mostcommon symptoms - dry eyesand a dry mouth.

As with all salivary glands, the parotid has multiple secretion

pathways. Therefore, it must sortproteins destined for saliva intothe correct pathway for secretion. This can be tricky as there areseven possible pathways, reportsthe Journal of Dental Research.

One pathway takes proteinsto the salivary duct, other path-ways carry different proteins tothe ‘back’ side of the cell to besecreted into the blood or toform a supportive matrix for thecells.

Transport along these path-ways occurs by sorting the pro-teins into vesicles (hollow mem-brane sacs) that carry their “car-go” to the correct destination, according to a Louisville state-ment. Conventional thought wasthat cargo proteins are movedinto the forming vesicles by at-taching to sorting receptor pro-teins.

Darling and his team suggestthe reason no salivary sortingreceptor protein has been foundis that it may not exist. IANS

Early men stayed at homewhile their females workedLondon: Early species of cave-men who roamed the earth twomillion years ago did not go towork but stayed at home andlooked after the kids, while theirfemales earned bread for thefamily, says a new research.

Archaeologists have found outthat males of two varieties of“hominids” – species whichwalked on two legs – roamed amuch smaller area than their fe-males, the Daily Express report-ed.

Scientists calculated the move-ments of the extinct Australop-ithecus africanus and Paranthro-pus robustus by analysing levelsof strontium in their tooth enam-el.

The element is found in rocksand soil and absorbed by plantsand animals in the immediatevicinity.

Strontium levels in toothenamel reveal what the cavemenhad eaten, and where they had

been, the scientists say.More than half of female teeth

analysed were from outside thelocal area compared to just onein 10 among males.

The researchers analysed 19teeth dating back 2.7 to 1.7 millionyears from two sets of SouthAfrican caves around a kilometre

apart.Study author Sandi Copeland

from the University of Coloradosaid: “Here we have the first di-rect glimpse of the geographicmovements of early hominids, and it appears the females pref-erentially moved away from theirresidential groups.” IANS

ʻGene therapyʼgives hope to cystic fibrosis

patientsLondon: In a possible breakthrough, British scientistsclaim to have discovered a gene therapy which theybelieve could save the lives of thousands of cysticfibrosis sufferers.

The disease is caused by two defective copies of agene. One major symptom is that the lungs becomeblocked with thick mucus, leading to potentiallydeadly infections.

Tests have shown that the missing CF gene, whichwas discovered in 1989, can be introduced into thelungs using a device like an asthma inhaler. It helpsto reduce the deadly mucus and may allow sufferersto lead almost normal lives.

Now, a team from Imperial College London and theuniversities of Edinburgh and Oxford claim to havecome up with the new therapy after working on it fornearly 10 years, and human trials are under way.

According to the scientists, the gene is deliveredinto the lungs after being wrapped in a special fat. And, the treatment should be taken once a month forthe rest of a patient’s life, the ‘Sunday Express’ re-ported.

Prof Eric Alton, a respiratory consultant at London’sBrompton Hospital, who is leading the research effort, said: “Despite our best efforts, we lose a significantnumber of young people each year to this illness.

“Our initial clinical trials suggest that spraying thegene into the lung can correct the defect.”

Angharad Sutton, 30, a university worker fromEaling, west London, took part in trials of the genespray. She said: “It’s amazing that one day soon Imight not have to worry about a chest infection. Atpresent I have to perform twice daily physiotherapyto keep my airways clear.”

Now, the British scientists want funds for year-longtrials involving 100 patients. About one in 25 peoplecarry a defective gene.

Rosie Barnes, formerly chief executive of the CysticFibrosis Trust, is helping to raise research funds.

She said: “This is an amazing development forBritish science. Once cystic fibrosis sufferers barelygot past their teens. Now we have the prospect thatsoon they may live to old age.” PTI

120 policemen killedin Syrian ambush

Damascus: Armed men attacked Syriansecurity forces in a tense northern cityyesterday, state television said, and 120policemen and security forces werekilled in a region where the army hascarried out days of deadly assaults onprotesters calling for the end of PresidentBashar Assad's rule.

The incident took place in Jisr al-Shughour in Idleb province, when thepolicemen were on their way to controlan unrest.

Armed groups also attacked a securitycentre and a number of governmentbuildings and burned down a few ofthem. The insurgents stole around fivetonnes of dynamite from a storage build-ing.

Security reinforcements have reachedthe area to protect civilians, SANA re-

ported.Communications were cut to the area

around Jisr al-Shughour and the detailsof the attack were impossible to verify, but there have been unconfirmed reportsin the past by residents and activists ofSyrians fighting back against securityforces. The government promised a "de-cisive" response, setting the stage foran even stronger government crackdownagainst a popular uprising that beganin mid-March and poses the most potentthreat in years to the 40-year regime ofthe Assad family.

"We will deal strongly and decisively, and according to the law, and we willnot be silent about any armed attackthat targets the security of the state andits citizens," said interior ministerIbrahim Shaar.

Jisr al-Shughour, near the Turkishborder, has been the latest focus ofSyria's military, whose nationwide crack-down on the revolt has left more than1,200 Syrians dead, activists say.

The town was a stronghold of thecountry's banned Muslim Brotherhoodin the 1980s. Human rights groups saidat least 42 civilians have been killedthere since Saturday.

Syria has been engulfed since Marchin a wave of protests, calling for reformsand more freedom in the country.

President Bashar al-Assad had initiallyresponded to the anti-governmentprotests by offering some concessions, including lifting the emergency in placesince 1963, releasing hundreds of polit-ical detainees and reshuffling the gov-ernment. AP

Poor health may dog Single momsWashington: Single mothers aremost likely to suffer from poorerhealth later in life, a new Amer-ican study has claimed.

The 30-year study which sur-veyed thousands of mothers inthe US found that those whohad children out of the wedlockreported lower levels of healthat age 40 than those who weremarried when they had theirfirst child.

And marriage, when it oc-curred after motherhood, didnot appear to remedy thewomen’s health problems, ac-cording to the study, led by KristiWilliams of sociology at OhioState University.

The findings suggested thatpublic health campaigns to pro-mote marriage, which were start-ed in the US in 1996 and aimedat single and low-income moth-ers, may not improve thesewomen’s health as once hoped, the researchers said.

Because many more womenhave out-of-wedlock children to-day than several decades ago,the researchers predicted an in-creasing public health problemas these women enter theirmidlife, LiveScience reported.

For their research, Williamsand colleagues analysed surveyresponses from close to 4,000women who were ages 14 to 22when the study began in 1979.The women were interviewedevery year until 1994, and then

every two years afterward until2008.

Women who had their firstchild out of wedlock reportedlower levels of health at age 40than did those who were marriedwhen they had their first child.

The results held even afterthe researchers took into accountfactors that could influence themother’s health, including edu-cation level and health condi-tions that existed before 1979.

Getting married later on didnot tend to ameliorate the singlemother’s poor health unless shemarried the biological father, re-mained married to him, and waswhite or Hispanic. There was nobeneficial effect of later marriagefor black mothers, the re-searchers said.

The study did not determinewhy single mothers had poorerhealth, but the researchers spec-ulated it may be due to the stressand financial strain that often

accompany single parenthood. Both of these factors are impli-cated in a wide range of healthproblems, Williams said.

The health effects seen in thisstudy were probably largely aresult of the single mothers’ eco-nomic disadvantage, saidWilliam Avison, a sociologist atUniversity of Western Ontarioin Canada, who was not involvedwith the study.

If a large percentage of singlemothers today had the familyand financial support they need-ed to raise a child, then theymight face fewer health prob-lems, Avison said.

“In the long run, it’s still acase of the socioeconomic dis-parities that produce all sorts ofnegative outcomes for people,”Avison said.

The new study will be pub-lished in the June issue of thejournal American SociologicalReview. PTI

Bucharest: Romania has saidvegetables grown in the countrywere not infected with the E.coli bacteria and were safe forconsumption, Xinhua reported.

“There is no danger in eatingRomanian vegetables, be themcucumbers, lettuce or tomatoes,”agriculture minister ValeriuTabara said.

He expressed hope that “Ger-many will unveil the exact sourceof the infection so that no moregames will be played to blockother export contracts”.

He said Romanian farmerswere suffering because of the

incident that did not occur inthe country.

Tabara said Germany put theblame on a product instead ofthe environment where the prod-uct got in touch with the germs.

“Germany has several timeschanged its position - first, thebacteria was linked to Spanishcucumbers, then to Dutch cu-cumbers, while this morning wefound out the embryos of anAsian bean species eaten as saladwere to be blamed. There is afalse statement here as well, be-cause the infection was extra-neous, not coming from inside

the plant,” said Tabara. The minister asked local pro-

ducers to submit to the ministrytheir estimates of losses, sayingthat Romania will ask the Euro-pean Commission to compensateall the cucumber farmers whohave been affected.

The ministry’s data indicatethat Romanian producers werelosing 100,000 euro a day be-cause of the ban on trade in cu-cumbers.
