Case Study DEC Finland

• DEC Finland under went a trial for all its sales people with the University of Helsinki in 1986.

• It recommended that buildings could be 40% smaller if designed as Virtual offices. Less desks, more meeting rooms.

• Smaller sq m work pods, with networked computer, phone, no filing space.

• Centralised filing space like a locker room

• Check in / Check out pod by reception included registration of phone and computer user name.

Results of Case Study

• DEC facilities defined all future buildings worldwide to design using the DEC Finland model

• Saved 40% of office space. For a population of 135,000 employees this saved premises for 50,000 people at cost then of $5,000 per employee per year.

• Yes, $250,000,000 per annum and in 1980s standards that is massive compared to today’s money
