March is here already. I wonder if we’ll have a freak warm and sunny week this March like we did last year. I wouldn’t complain if we did, would be very welcome. Mind you if my memory serves me right it was snowing the week after and then a year of very wet weather. January and February have dragged for me this year, despite having a birthday and a weekend away. Thankfully I had the box set of Miranda to see me through. Not sure if there are any more Miranda fans out there, but she used to be on TV on Monday evenings for a half hour comedy and I became a fan!

More local to home, did any of you manage to make it to the St David’s Day Parade in Wrexham? Unfortunately I’ve not been able to catch any of them since they started in 2009, the joys of working! This year’s began at 1.30 pm from Lambpit Street on Friday 1st March and ended up through Queens square to Llwyn Isaf. Community groups, schools, and members of the public joined the procession through town , and finished with speeches at the Guildhall balcony and the singing of the National Anthem. The following day the celebrations continued with Wrexham’s annual St David’s Day market, which took

your life, your home, your community.

place between 10am and 4pm. Sounds great, and I hope a good time was had by all!

Congratulations to the Maelor School Penley, who have won the Secondary School Achievement Award – at the Wrexham County Borough Sporting Awards last month. They must be very pleased and quite rightly so. They kept that quiet! Does that mean we have lots of potential future Olympians at the Maelor School? I hope so.

It’s already feeling lighter and brighter, and Easter will soon be here at the end of the month so a lot to look forward to. I can tell the world is finally waking up after winter as the notice board is mega busy with lots of local going s on already which is great.

And just as I’ve made the decision to try a piece of fashion and buy a onesie to be snug, warm and comfortable around the house, the weather’s on the change. Perhaps it’s a sign and the worlds way of telling me they’re really for kids!

All the best, Jill

reasons to buy localby Caroline Jones

Recent news articles about beefburgers sold in the UK and Ireland have raised a lot of questions for meat eaters. While there is no risk to health, it is still shocking that without carefully considering the origins of our food we really have no idea what we may be eating. What else is lurking in there that we don’t know about? There are so many reasons to shop locally - quality produce at affordable prices, traceability, low food miles and supporting local traders and farmers are just a few.Local producers are seeing some of the most difficult trading conditions that we have seen in decades. The reason we survive – quality produce, knowledgeable staff and loyal customers. One of the most difficult challenges for local producers is the fact that supermarkets and big-name firms can always produce food which is cheaper for the customer BUT do you know what you’re buying?Recent news suggests that we don’t always know what mass-produced, cheaper products contain. When you go out to eat, don’t be afraid to ask where the meat has come from. A good manager or chef will be proud to say

that their meat products have been sourced locally.

If you want to know exactly what you are eating then buy locally. At Jones Brothers Farm Shop we have fully trained staff on hand to offer information and advice on the origins of your meat, the ingredients in your sausages and much more.

At Jones Brothers our aim is, and always has been, to offer locally-sourced, high quality food at reasonable prices.

In addition to a wide range of meats we also offer a selection of locally-sourced dairy products and fresh fruit and vegetables.

We have an i m p r e s s i v e selection of award-winning sausages which we make ourselves, creating traditional flavours as well as experimenting with new blends

Pop in and see our friendly staff. Get to know us - and get to know your food!

It’s March already and all those well intentions and New Year resolutions seem to have been made such a while ago!Perhaps some of our readers made a promise to themselves to ‘sort out their finances’ (or even sort their paperwork drawer!) and this is where we think we can help. For the months of March and April we are offering a no obligation financial review at our Wrexham office every Wednesday between 8.00 am and 7.00 pm (for the early risers and night owls).

Currently the following 5 areas are perhaps the most popular topics where we are helping:• ISA Planning – Tax year end is some 7

weeks away. Have you looked to use this year’s allowance or are you going to miss the opportunity to save or invest tax efficiently?

• Pension Planning – As usual plenty of changes and plenty of opportunities in this area. Would you like to review your pensions, improve your understanding of what they might provide for you and compare their performance over the last few years?

• Savings and Investments – There is a saying that ‘knowledge is king’. If you have perhaps ISAs, Bonds (perhaps With

Profits Bonds?) or regular savings plans do you know if they are at the top of the tree, somewhere in the middle or languishing at the bottom? Would you like to find out?

• Inheritance Planning – Would you like to consider how to use gifting opportunities (to gift towards your children or grandchildren) effectively? Would you like to review your current arrangements to try to ensure the threat of Inheritance Tax is reduced?

• Long Term Care Planning – This may be of interest to you, your parents or your grandparents (or all of you). Would you like to ensure that you are making the best possible arrangements to protect your home and capital? Surely an area worth spending an hour considering?

Of course, your priority area may be something different. We are very confident that one of our team of qualified advisers will be able to assist.

If you would like to make an appointment please call Kate or Angela on 01978 311611 or email [email protected] and we will look forward to meeting you.

Wednesdays in March and April may never have been so useful!

As well as adopting the festival of Eostre, the Egg, representing fertility and re-birth in pagan times, was also adopted as part of the Christian Easter festival and it came to represent the ‘resurrection’ or re-birth of Christ after the crucifixion and some believe it is a symbol of the stone blocking the Sepulchre being ‘rolled’ away. In the UK and Europe, the earliest Easter eggs were painted and decorated hen, duck or goose eggs, a practice still carried on in parts of the world today. As time went by, artificial eggs were made and by the end of the 17th century, manufactured eggs were available for purchase at Easter, for giving as Easter gifts and presents. Easter eggs continued to evolve through the 18th and into the 19th Century, with hollow cardboard Easter eggs filled with Easter gifts and sumptuously decorated, culminating with the fabulous Faberge Eggs. Encrusted with jewels, they were made for the Czar’s of Russia by Carl Faberge, a French jeweller. Surely these were the ‘ultimate’ Easter gift, to buy even a small one now would make you poorer by several millions of pounds.

THE CHOCOLATE EASTER EGGIt was at about this time (early 1800’s) that the first chocolate Easter egg appeared in Germany and France and soon spread to the rest of Europe and beyond. The first chocolate eggs were solid soon followed by hollow eggs. Although making hollow eggs at that time was no mean feat, because the easily worked chocolate we use today didn’t exist then, they had to use a paste made from ground roasted cacao beans. By the turn of the 19th Century, the discovery of the modern chocolate making process and improved mass manufacturing methods meant that the Chocolate Easter Egg was fast becoming the Easter Gift of choice in the UK and parts of Europe, and by the 1960’s it was well established worldwide.

New ZealandThe journey to New Zealand has never been easier and once there, magnificent scenery and friendly, welcoming locals are amongst the many rewards.

Days on the islands could be as diverse as heli-hiking on a glacier, taking one of the world’s most spectacular ferry journeys across the Cook Strait or boarding the Tranz Alpine Train to traverse the Southern Alps.

The Otago Peninsula is home to the endangered yellow eyed penguins and a cruise in the Fiordland National Park could be where whales, dolphins and seals are spotted.

My most memorable experiences were a cruise on board a yacht that once raced in the America’s Cup, a light aircraft flight over Mount Cook and having delicious lunches whilst tasting exquisite wines on lovely sunny days.

No visit to New Zealand would be complete without a few days around Rotorua, a focal point of Maori culture. Forming part of the thermal region, the area also has many viewing platforms from which a variety of geysers, hot springs and boiling mud pools can be admired.I have been specialising in holidays of a lifetime to New Zealand for more than fifteen years. January to March is the best time for weather and flights are now going on sale for early 2014. Contact me today to begin your journey.

Handy hints to keep your busy throughout MarchEARLY MARCH• Sow bedding plants, clean your green house just before Spring sowing to maximise light levels.

• If the weather is mild enough lift and divide perennials to promote healthy growth, it’s also a good way of getting free plants.

• In warmer areas if weather allows sow early crops of carrots and broad beans under cloches.

• Give your beds a boost by adding a thick layer of mulch around plants to lock in moisture and ensure beds don’t dry out, also will keep weeds at bay.

MID MARCH• Sow summer bedding seeds- start sowing summer bedding plants that need a longer growing season.

• Plant dahlia tubers in trays of damp compost, leaving the stems exposed. Place the tray in a greenhouse and within weeks you’ll have new shoots.

• Prune hardy fuschias- give plants a hard

prune leaving 15cm to 30cm of stem from which new growth will shoot. Only prune when buds are visible.

• Boost pot grown shrubs with a layer of compost. If your plant has outgrown its pot, tease out the roots before repotting.

• Sow beetroot., tomato and courgette seeds, and plant out early potatoes.

LATE MARCH• Install a water butt• Start pruning hedges• Get ready for hanging baskets by

sowing annual seeds• Spread a slow release fertiliser around

Mothering Sunday is the fourth Sunday of Lent. Although it’s often called “Mother’s Day” it has no connection with the American festival of that name.

Traditionally, it was a day when children, mainly daughters, who had gone to work as domestic servants were given a day off to visit their mother and family.

Today it is a day when children give presents, flowers, and cards to their mothers.

A BIT OF HISTORY

Most Sundays in the year churchgoers in England worship at their nearest parish or “daughter church”.

Centuries ago it was considered important for people to return to their home or “mother” church once a year. So each year in the middle of Lent, everyone would visit their “mother” church, or the main church or Cathedral of the area. Inevitably the return to the “mother” church became an occasion for family reunions when children who were working away returned home.

And most historians think that it was the return to the “Mother” church which led to the tradition of children, particularly those working as domestic servants, or as apprentices, being given the day off to visit their mother and family.

As they walked along the country lanes, children would pick wild flowers or violets to take to church or give to their mother as a small gift.

SWEET PEAS traditionally grown in the garden of the Erddig House in North Wales, one of the jewels in the National Trust’s crown, have inspired a special silver beaker made by silversmith Rauni Higson as part of the exhibition “Studio Silver Today”. The capsule exhibition, which opens in the Print Room at Erddig on Saturday March 9, is a joint initiative between the Goldsmiths’ Company and the National Trust. The exhibition focuses on the work of silversmith Rauni Higson, herself no stranger to the beauty of the area as she lives and works in a converted chapel in Snowdonia. One of the highlights of the Goldsmiths’ Company’s collaboration with the National Trust at Erddig is a silver beaker commissioned by the Company. The Company’s brief to Rauni was to design and make a beaker which is inspired by and encapsulates some aspect of the property. Rauni found her inspiration for the beaker in Erddig’s romantic association with the sweet pea, a flower which has long been cultivated in the beautiful gardens that surround the early 18th century country house. A modest silver bowl decorated with a design of sweet peas which sits on the table in the dining room at Erddig drew her attention to the sweet pea connection. The bowl had been presented in about 1903 to the then Squire Philip Yorke II and his Head Gardener as a prize for their award winning sweet peas. Rauni recounts: “The bowl seemed to capture something of the spirit of Erddig and epitomised the close relationship between the family and their staff. I then noticed the significance of sweet peas to the inhabitants of Erddig; they are grown in

the gardens, often mentioned in the notes on menus as table decorations and modern floriferous varieties are developed locally.”During her residency at Erddig Rauni will hand raise the beaker, hammering a flat disc of silver up and over steel stakes to create the beaker’s form. She will then fill the beaker with pitch and finally chase the design over the surface using small chisel-like punches, of various shapes, which she will lightly hammer across the metal, with many thousands of blows. The beaker is a prize for a draw which is open to any of the visitors to Erddig while the exhibition is on. When the exhibition closes on November 2, the winning entry will be drawn and one lucky person will be the owner of an exquisite silver beaker inspired by the sweet peas at Erddig House in North Wales, one of Britain’s finest historic houses. This is the fourth consecutive year that the Goldsmiths’ Company is working in collaboration with the National Trust in hosting the exhibition “Studio Silver Today” featuring a leading British silversmith and telling the story of the Goldsmiths’ Company and its on-going patronage of contemporary British silver.Rosemary Ransome Wallis, Curator of the Collections at Goldsmiths’ Hall, said: “Rauni was the obvious choice as artist-in-residence at Erddig for the “Studio Silver Today” exhibition. Her out-going personality, her virtuoso craft skill as a silversmith and her unique creative vitality make her a fitting ambassador of the silversmiths’ art. She is truly a star from Snowdonia.”A short film produced about Rauni’s residency at Erddig, her work and her influences is on view during the exhibition.

RAUNI HIGSON www.raunihigson.co.uk

Rauni (42) is a silversmith based in a converted chapel in Snowdonia, where the dramatic scenery informs her work. Her work is highly sculptural, but always designed for function, and her fluid forms come alive when used as they were intended.Rauni’s work is rooted in a sculptural approach to functional objects. She is fascinated by technique and process, particularly fold-forming, which she has been developing her personal interpretation of for some years. It is no surprise that Rauni’s inspiration is drawn from the natural world, particularly the dramatic mountains and coastline of Snowdonia, where she lives and works. She aims to capture the beauty of nature without directly imitating it. Movement, flow and growth patterns are a particular fascination.Much of her work is to commission, including a recent Royal Wedding gift, three pieces in the Goldsmiths’ Company Collection, a travelling communion set, candelabra for Asprey, and a 72-piece canteen of cutlery. Rauni is a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths.

“The most rewarding part of being a Shared Lives carer is seeing the change in the people that come to live with us. We have had adults come to us without any confidence. Some have spent much of their lives being over protected and it is lovely to see them become independent. Some people will then move on into their own homes.” Shared Lives carer

Some people in our community need additional help and support in their daily lives because of learning or physical disabilities, mental health problems or being elderly. With your help, they could lead fulfilling and varied lifestyles. Do you have a spare room? Could you support someone in your own home? Could you include someone in your social network and leisure activities? Wrexham Shared Lives believe that people should be able to lead the lives that they want, whilst they receive the support that they require in the home of their choice. We arrange for people with additional support needs to have short breaks or live long term in the homes of carefully selected people called Shared Lives carers.

Could you support a vulnerable adult from your own home? Do you have…

Room to spare? Time to Share?

We would like to hear from you if: You want to make a real difference to people’s lives You are enthusiastic and motivated You are positive and caring You are sensitive to people’s needs You can work to agreed plans You are looking for a flexible way to earn additional income Experience in the care sector would be useful but it is not a requirement. Enthusiasm is just as valuable. In return, we will provide you with induction, training and support. You will also receive a weekly payment (includes a generous tax allowance).

I had a most interesting chat with Mr. Elliot Williams over a coffee recently, and discovered what a mine of information he is- especially about Overton, where he was born and bred, also having been the Postmaster there for many years. When we talked about past residents of the village, I mentioned the name of Archie Gamble, and he immediately answered “ Oh, you mean the Jaguar man!” Funnily enough, I knew he would say that, because Archie really was a Jaguar enthusiast, having owned an XK150 sports car and a Mk.V11 saloon, but digging deep into my memory bank, I’m almost sure that he had also owned a Mk.V saloon- one of my favourite cars.

Perhaps you may remember that the pre-war Jaguars had long bonnets and huge Lucas P100 headlamps, but , at the 1948 London Motor Show, the company introduced the Mk.V saloon, with subtle styling modifications that made it such an attractive car to me and many other car enthusiasts. Gone were the huge P100 headlamps, being replaced by more modern fared-in units, and the rear wheels were fitted with spats- so very fashionable at the time! That sleek body with the long

bonnet and the large chromed radiator gave the MK.V its very seductive looks, and, as far as I was concerned, it was one of those cars that appeared to be moving when it was standing still! The typically English polished wood and leather interior were once again to my traditional taste, and in gleaming white, it really was a spectacle to behold. Under the bonnet was either a 2.5 litre (102 b.h.p.) or 3.5 litre (125 b.h.p.) o.h.v. six cylinder engine to choice (No, not the double overhead camshaft XK unit, as that appeared in the MK.7 saloon which came later.) and top speeds were in the order of 80/90 m.p.h. In those far off days, typical prices of the Jaguar MK V were £1217 and £1401 respectively, and under Sir William Lyons, Jaguars were always exceptionally good value for money.

So, when I stroll past the lines of classic cars at some Vintage event or other, I’m still excited when I see the ‘baby’ Austins; the T-Type

two-seater M.G.s; the Austin 16s; the Riley RMEs; the Sunbeam Talbot 90s; the M.G. Magnettes- and, of course, the beautiful Jaguar MK.V!
