Welcome
Welcome to the eighth Wokingham Festival, showcasing a fabulous line-up of fine food, beer, demos and musical entertainment to suit all tastes.
We have a new layout in 2014 to provide more space in front of the TradeMark Music Stage and to make it easier to access the In-toto Demonstration Theatre and Food & Drink Exhibitor Marquee. Please visit our popular stallholders to try samples and learn about the many award -winning products available to purchase.
In the Restaurant Marquee, we have over 60 beers and perries waiting for you to savour! See all the details later in the programme. Hot food from around the world including Thai noodles, Spanish paella, French crepes, plus the humble burger and hot dog, all await you.
We have a couple of special guest chefs you won’t want to miss: Giancarlo Caldesi of Caldesi in Campagna, Bray, (best known for his appearances on BBC2 series Return to Tuscany) and Ryan Simpson of Orwells in Shiplake - a young rising star - will be joining us on Saturday;
plus Yasemen Kaner-White, author of Lemon Compendium and Kran Sondh from The CookCurry Club, on Sunday. Also in the In-toto Demonstration Theatre, you will be able take part in wine and beer tasting sessions and find out how to mix the perfect cocktail for your next party. There is no need to book but we suggest you get there early to avoid disappointment. Check out all the details on pages 18-21.
Over in Children’s Corner our younger visitors can be creative with activities led by Hobbycraft or have their face or arm painted for a small charge. Magic Moments will be roving around and Circus Scene will teach you a trick or two!
Live music adds to the ambiance of the weekend,
with music ranging from The SkaSouls, head-lining on Friday evening, to Small Strings, a ukulele band from Reading, on Saturday afternoon. Other local favourites returning, include Bruce Neil, Savour the Flavour, Rock Choir, Sophy Lole and Young Fossl.
We believe Wokingham Festival really is the perfect place to spend a Bank Holiday Week-end and we hope you think so too...

Ferryman’s Gold 4.4% Brewed using Slovenian Stryian Golding hops, (originally an English variety, which have been grown in Slovenia for the last 100 years), which impart a zesty Lime flavour. The mix of Cara malt and Wheat malt give a smooth, creamy body to the beer.
Hoppit Classic Bitter 3.5% The predominant hops in Hoppit are East Kent Goldings which traditionally have a Seville Orange marmalade flavour. As well as Pale Ale malt, Hoppit also contains dark Invert Sugar which gives the beer its smooth taste. This is an excellent fairly bitter session ale.
Conqueror Black IPA 5.0% This beer is brewed in the IPA style i.e. strong, dry and hoppy (all features to cope with the arduous journey to India) but it certainly isn’t pale. The blackness of this beer is produced using a blend of 5 malts including Chocolate, dark Crystal, Carafa and Smoked malt. It was a finalist at this year’s Great British Beer Festival.

Wokingham
This event is a collaboration between the Wokingham renowned street artist ‘Pistol’ and some of his talented friends. The hoarding at the bottom of Elms Road is destined to be brought to life thanks to the creativity of several artists converging on Wokingham for this special event in aid of the Ollie Young Foundation.
Starting on Saturday and concluding on Sunday the artists will paint throughout the weekend and the general public and festival goers are invited to watch them paint and hopefully donate to this very worthy cause. You can even take part in the event by signing ‘Ollie’s Wall’ for a small donation to the foundation.
The Ollie Young Foundation was launched in June 2012, in memory of a brave little boy who lost his fight against an incurable brain tumour one day before his sixth birthday and only twelve weeks after first displaying symptoms. There was no available treatment for Ollie, no cure and no hope.
Brain tumors kill more children than any other cancer, yet research into brain tumours receives only 0.7% of UK national cancer research spending.
Our ultimate aim is to find a cure or prevention from this awful disease. We’ve raised enough already to fund a three year research partnership with Portsmouth’s Cellular & Molecular Neuro- Oncology Research Group.
A percentage of funds also go to Helen & Douglas House and CLIC Sargent - two organisations that are very close to our hearts and where children and their families often go for much needed

MUSIC lovers will be
dancing in the

Wokingham when the
series of Under the Sky concerts.
Alternative rockers Toploader
will headline the
fantastic music nights at Elms Field
on Friday.
Saturday will offer A Night with the
Classics, featuring headliners the
Slough Philharmonic Orchestra,
while Sunday presents a cool jazzy
afternoon called Summertime
Swing, with The Laurie Holloway Trio.
The new concert series was born
out of last year’s patriotic
celebrations which saw street
parties and live music across
Wokingham.
Organiser Stan Hetherington, says:
“Last year’s concert for the Jubilee
was really special – that was the
source of the idea and we want to
continue it.”
At the concerts music lovers will
be able to enjoy drinks from Cocktail
Hour and The Wokingham Lions bar,
and tuck in to foodie
treats from Street Food
Spain and The Giggling
Spring.
As well as bringing
big names to Wokingham, the
concerts will also celebrate local
talent like Reading’s Amy’s Ghost
and The Thames Valley Chorus.
The men’s chorus celebrate their
40th anniversary next year and have
come up with an Under the Sky set
list which includes two songs that
secured them the title of ‘Choir of
the Year’ at Bournemouth Music
Festival earlier this month.
“We try to mix and match our
songs – there are the songs
from shows and modern pop
classics,” says choir member Clive
Pugh.
“We have a unique sound and
we are having fun. Most people
latch on to that and have a good
time with us as well.”
The choir are in for a busy day
on Saturday as they perform at a
wedding in Woodley at 1pm and
only have a frantic hour before
arriving at Elms Field to prepare
for the evening concert.
Sunday’s swing
band, The Laurie
Holloway Trio, join the
line-up with 70s
legend Kenny Lynch,
thanks to talkshow
legend Sir Michael
Parkinson.
The former TV
host is patron of

Children’s Hospice Service, a
children’s charity
from the concerts’ takings, and he
invited the performers to strut their
stuff on Sunday.
“It will be great to see Ken playing
live,” continues Mr Hetherington.
“He doesn’t play live often these
days, but he featured a lot in the
70s – you name it, Kenny was there.
And he’s as good today as he was in
his youth. He is so funny.”
Excitement is also building ahead
of Toploader’s curtain raiser on
Friday. The band have sold more
than two million albums and are
best known for the catchy Dancing
in the Moonlight, which peaked at
number seven in the charts in 2000.
After touring with the likes of Bon
Jovi, Robbie Williams, Coldplay and
Muse, the band have perfected their
stage craft and look set to get the
crowd dancing in Wokingham.
Mr Hetherington hopes the
concerts will join the Wokingham
May Fayre and other events as
res in the town.
“There is a group of younger
people coming through which is
wonderful,” he says. “I think the
future of the town is really good. We
are a community that gets out there
and gets things done.”

SUNDAY markets will become a
permanent fixture in Wokingham if
a pilot series which launches this
weekend proves successful.
Super Sundays will take place
each week throughout July in a bid
to boost footfall on a traditionally
quiet shopping day in the town.
The themed events, organised by
Wokingham Town Team, kick off this
Sunday with an artisan market
offering handmade arts and crafts,
followed by a children and family
market on Sunday, July 14.
Local food will be the focus on
Sunday, July 21, ahead of an
international food market on
Sunday, July 28.
Each market will be held in
Market Place between 10am and
4pm and feature around 25 stalls.
A Blues Bros tribute band,
teenage singer Aedan Day and
performer Andy Prince will keep
shoppers entertained from 11am to
3.30pm.Kirsti Morrish, manager of
Dollshouse Boutique in Rose Street
and Town Team member, said: “We
have canvassed shops throughout
the town and have convinced many
of them to open up for the day too.
“We hope Wokingham will become
a lively buzzing place with the cafes
and restaurants brimming over with
families out for a fun day where
they can do their shopping, browse
the market and wonder into the
shops.”She added: “The Town Team
conducted a survey of about 300
people and 52 per cent said they
would use a Sunday market at least
every fortnight. A further 23 per
cent said they would use a Sunday
market once a month.
“Wokingham is an area with high
employment so it is not easy to go
shopping during the week but about
75 per cent of people said they
would come to a Sunday market at
least once a month.
“If this pilot works then Sunday
markets will become a regular event
in Wokingham from September.”

The SkaSouls9.15pm to 10.30pm plus encore
Drawing on many years of experience playing with acts nationally and globally, these Surrey-based musicians have merged their skills and abilities in order to create something new and extraordinary. Us-ing strong vocals and a powerful brass section with a rock solid, hard-hitting rhythm section, the SkaSouls have rediscovered the formula to ignite the music scene once again.
No sampled sounds here! The original sounds and mixes from the Jamaican ska and rocksteady of the 60s and 70s (Toots & The Maytals, Desmond Dekker, Justin Hinds, Symarip etc.) are perfectly merged with the urban ska standards of the late 70s and early 80s (Specials, Bad Manners, Madness etc.) and contemporary sounds of the likes of Rancid and Paolo Nutini, with a few of the SkaSouls’ own songs included for good measure.
They create a non-stop tapestry of great, danceable music for everyone, with astounding five-way vocal harmonies and stacks of on-stage personality.www.skasouls.com
