On November 8, 1972, the newly-built LASH vessel, M/S says Ted Dugey, with Biehl & Company, agents for CombiMUNCHEN, owned by Hapag-Lloyd AG and operatedunder the Combi Line flag, made her first call to the Port ofHouston, docking at the new Barbours Cut Terminal. Shewas the second LASH ship ever to call at Barbours Cut; thefirst was her sister ship, the M/S BILDERDYK.

The 43,895 dwt MUNCHEN and her sister ship were thenewest and most modern vessels afloat. They were starting anew era in shipping for Hapag-Lloyd, just as Barbours CutTerminal was starting a new era for the Port of Houston asone of the newest and most modern port facilities.

Scheduled for a round voyage every 34 days, theMUNCHEN carried 83 LASH Barges in a fast LASHservice between Rotterdam and Houston and other U.S.ports.

December 14, 1978, six years laters, in what is believed tobe the worst dry cargo shipping disaster ever, the M/SMUNCHEN was lost at sea with all 27 crewmen and thewife of one of the officers.

Her last reported position was about 450 miles north ofthe Azores in the North Atlantic. She was being battered byHurricane force winds and heavy seas.

Because of her long and close relationship with the Portof Houston, a memorial service was conducted at the Portof Houston’s Seamen’s Center, where many times membersof the crew would go once in port.

"Almost everybody in the shipping business in Houstonknew Captain Johann Danekamp and most of his crew"

Line."Houston was like a second home to most of the

MUNCHEN’S crew. Captain Danekamp had been withHapag-Lloyd for a number of years, and he and his crewwere good friends with most of the Biehl personnel inHouston," says Mr. Dugey.

"The loss of the MUNCHEN and her crew meant the lossof close friends to many people associated with the shippingindustry in Houston," says John Iisager, Vice President,Biehl & Company. The memorial service held at the Port ofHouston’s Seamen’s Center was indicative of that fact. Theturnout was overwheming.

"I think that the memorial service for the MUNCHEN’Screw was very, very kind of the Port of Houston and all thepeople who attended," stated Mr. Dugey, there were alltypes of people there: five came from customs, a couplefrom the Coast Guard, the Port of Houston’s ExecutiveDirector George Altvater was there with Bob Curtis, thePort’s Director of Operations. There were peoplerepresenting Immigrations and people right off thewater--front who came to pay their respects.

The service was conducted by five different faiths. TheCenter’s Reverend Jim Scott, Episcopalian, read passagesfrom the Bible in German.

"We will always remember the MUNCHEN and hercrew. No one can judge the strength of the sea." Mr. Dugeysaid in a final remark in memory of the M/S MUNCHEN.

ouston’s NewestExport Crating Co.

Dick Tate, who is well-known throughout the Port ofHouston’s trade territory, has opened his own packingbusiness, the Southern Export Crating Company.

Three years ago Dick ]’ate built a very successfulexport crating company for an out of state firm. Bycatering to the needs of his customers, Dickestablished his reputation for service at a fair price. This policy is the foundation for building his newSouthern Export Crating Company.

A pioneer in offering large indoor storage spacesand stabilized yards, Dick is now offering shippers upto 5,000 square feet of office space at his plant sothat volume movements may be handled moreefficiently.

Accurate documentation is frequently overlookedby some packers, but Dick insists on supplying qualitypaperwork with every job. The packing and markingrequirments as well as the packing list and invoicingseem to be getting more detailed with each contact. To insure prompt payment for his customers, Dicksees that all documents are in perfect order.

Working with Dick again is Steven Farris, who took

off the last two years to work on his Masters Degreein Forestry and Wood Products. Steve says that SECCOis now offering the only waterproof plywood availablefrom a Houston packer. This is not just exterior grade, but truly waterproof so it is not necessary to usewaterproofing paper. The wood will not turn colorregardless of how long it is exposed and the markswill remain legible indefinitely.

"Our policy is to give the customer a quality job at afair price, room if he needs it and to do the job in thetime frame allowed," Dick said. "We are a serviceindustry and most of our customers are serviceindustries. The name of the game is SERVICE."

A sister company of SECCO is Houston RiggingServices, whose expertise is in field erection andrigging. They have superintendents in virtually everyOPEC nation and can personally arrange forinspection, customs clearance, local trucking to thejob site and any heavy lifts that might be needed inmost any port of destination in the world. CarrollHuges, President of Houston Rigging Services, statesthat his people are qualified by experience to solvechallenging problems effectively.
